Thanks to this guide, before I even set up my hammock for the first time I went off and got myself some hardware - probably saved me 20 minutes setting it up on my first time. Also a good tip I figured out, once the hammock is back in the snake skin, I put a simple knot on the rope that's at the "head" of the hammock, so when I pull it out to attach it to the tree I know which end my head will be facing when I set it up. great guide, cheers!
Wow! this is by far the best way anyone has hung a hammock I've seen on UA-cam! Thank you so much! Very Helpful! I'm new to using a hammock, and was worried about knots, setting up, etc... But with this it makes it so simple.
hey Corey, im glad you found the video of use. Nowadays i tend to just use a tensionless hitch with a quick release knot round a caribiner. the method above does work but can cause damage to the rope in the long run if you arent careful. eno slap straps could be an alternative depending on the type of hammock you have! hammockforums is also a great place to start looking for more information and i thoroughly recommend it. any further questions then please dont hesitate to get in touch.
I watched this tutorial, went out got all the rings and biners, and I'm here to tell you...it works perfectly! This is the only way I set up my Hennessey from now on. I was backpacking in the North Georgia MTs, started to rain, got my Hennessey up in 1 min flat, and with the rain fly wrapped around the hammock, my sleeping area never got wet. Jimmy's shoe tip is great too, always know where your boots are, and no scorpions!
hey buddy, thanks for the positive comments!!! really appreciate it. glad things went well! i will try and do a zip model video as soon as possible. hang happy.
This video solved my recent problem. The Garda is the way to go, this will work perfect for my expedition HH. Thank you very much for the education. If your ever in America and want to hike the AT, it runs through my backyard, get in touch. Happy Trails.
Just took mine out for its first use and used this rigging. Excellent! Worked exactly as described, so quick and easy, which I especially appreciated setting up and taking down in the dark. Thank you!
Thank you posting this video. I was just given a Hennessy Hammock for Christmas and I think I will definitely be trying your technique when setting up. You should sent to Hennessy with link. Seems that it would make setup much easier and faster for all campers. Thank you again
Thanks man. Watched this video right after I got my hammock a few years ago. I wanted to let you know that I set it up just like this and can't imagine set up another way.
that mate has just blown me away, I have been at this for years and thought I got my set up quick, but its nothing on that, brilliant vid, cant wait to try it (subscribed)
Thanks. This is exactly what I was looking for. I sleep in a Hennessy but often have students to set up in basic ultralight hammocks. Often I'm the last to hang up and usually in the dark. This will make my life easier.
bought a hennesy hammock and rappel rings with my karibiner because of this video... thanks.. have not tried it yet but hope it all works out with my new hammock.
I've watched all of your Hennessy hammock videos Jimmy and I have to say that you are The definitive guide on these things. Thanks for posting your knowledge base for a simple easy to source way for guys like me to use. Ron
this method may not be your "original" but its the 1st I've seen it. WOW, what a super simple easy way to set your HH for the easy tension, thanks for teaching an old goat new ways
@mcsparron I'm a hammock geek now. I'll surely use the rings and biners--who wouldn't. Thanks for teaching me a simple technique I didn't previously know. My roots are in Iowa, farm life--I learned something from this--and I'll use the technique for my DIY hammocks.
Fantastic! Was backpacking in japan for the past month and a half and got some great nights in the hammock in and around kyoto. Using this rig made it quick as anything to set up and take down! Even worked on big bamboo!!
I added this to my set up...wow the time you save on set up. Awesome idea and thanks. One thing I noticed was a thicker ring is better then a thin one.
Thanks a lot for sharing this! I've been using this technique ever since I've watched your video and it works great. It added a little extra weight with the hardware, but setup is fast. The Hennessy Hammock is awesome, I've been using one for years. I wish I saw your setup a while back Thanks!
Couldn't get all the rings I needed so I did your idea but used a simple half hitch (instead of the clove hitch) on the 'biners on one end with the tensioning ring set up on the other. Worked great, the half hitch released when I needed to untie it.
For ease of hanging my hammock I used "SMRGearMe" easy slings and carabiners. I traveled 49 days in Japan this summer and hung in all types of locations for 41 of those nights. We had their Nube' system and loved it too... the two of us hung in the Nube' together with complete protection and saved on weight by sharing our shelter. But back to the easy slings they are much lighter than all the webbing others are selling, the webbing is needed only to protect the trees, the marine grade Blue Amsteel rope is just as strong and so much lighter. Many connection spots on the easy slings makes for quick and easy adjustments. They are a new company and I love the Nube' shelter made for hammocks and the easy slings in particular!
Brilliant technique! Thanks so much for making this video. I was always messing around setting up my hammock, I am going to get these things for the next time I am trekking!
i tried it at home and it functions really well with just two climbing-carabiners as well. repelrings are a bit expensive for this kind of use. and you can hang gear in you backpack easier on your hike with 4 extra carabiners. ;)
Trekkingnut--I'm totally digging your education on the Garda, and specifically how it applies to the HH. I'm off to order some rings, and I will use this techniique for both of my HHs (Expediton and UL BP. Thanks for the video! Coolkayaker1
I'm only just playing with the idea of hammock camping (I usually just sling down a roll mat) but this looks like an ingenious idea and I'm looking forward to trying it out
@mcsparron So yesterday when I went out to get gear for this setup: I found out that fatter descent rings are better (more surface area to grab the rope) and that the more symmetric your carabiner is the more evenly your rings will pull for a tighter grip on the hammock rope. Thanks again. This setup is perfect!
i guess Im randomly asking but does anyone know a tool to get back into an instagram account..? I was dumb forgot my login password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me.
@Richard Jude thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@whatpraytell im glad it was helpful! im going to do another one shortly on what to do if the tree huggers dont reach all the way round the tree, obviously you cant clip the carabiner on so you cant use the garda hitch.....but you can still use the rings will let you know when i post it up!
Very nice technique. For those of us ultralighters, I wonder if one could get awaywith a clove hitch on one side (no 'biners or rings) and your setup on the other... When I was using my hennesey (exact same setup as yours) in borneo, I used one biner and cloves hitces all around, it worked well, but the second hitch was not as easy to tension. Cheers for the video!
The technique is sound but I suggest two, side-by-side caribiners on each tree strap. They will provide the same functionality as the rap rings but with less weight (you will be eliminating two pieces of metal) and less cost expense. Thank you for the vid.
You could get rid of the rings and their weight by tying a clove hitch knot to the carabiner. This is a climbing knot used to lock oneself to an anchor or onto a carabiner. The knot is easy to tie and is easily adjustable.
I really like this setup I made the mistake of tying knots in it and spent an hour trying to feed them back through. This method looks great is it really bed for the hennessy hammock rope if so is it possible to change to use this and if so to what rope and thickness
Awesome! Even though it only takes a few minutes, getting the tension right on my Hennessy by tying and retying annoys me. This makes it crazy fast. Thanks!
I just ordered two carabiners and four rap rings. Thanks! My only question is whether this is going to wear out the spectra cord faster--but I'll find out.
great video, technique for setup is brilliant. silly question i guess but im new to hennessy and knowone is chatting about it - the rain fly, is it meant to be set up with the shiny side up or dull side up or does it matter? its just i thought the fabric may only be water proof effective on one side of the rainfly and it actually doest really specify anywhere, but seems as how you have tested it in jungle, my bet is im safe doing what you do to stay dry. so dull facing sky? or shiny facing sky?
im a climber and it is irrelevant which heal crotch takes what part of the equipment. the load is carried along the spine regardless and everything being done is well within the 23kn rating and not being cross loaded. if anything, keeping the rings at the smaller end will ensure that the rings do not slide up towards the gate and offset the loading as this would greatly reduce the integrity of the carabiner.
@danmagyver on the rain fly, there are taped seams. i.e: they have heat sealed the seams/joins. The taped bit needs to face down..... so the top will look smooth all over.
@zantarez im glad it helped! i actually just put some electrical tape round one end of the chord in bright red so that i can tell it apart instantly. its actually going to be a point in my next vid anyway. thanks!
Since you've made this video, sir, how have you been satisfied with it, especially making your hammock a bit looser after it's loaded with bad and underquilt--when the hammock's got a bit of weight in it? Thanks, Jules.
i now use the deep jungle xl instead of the explorer deluxe. however, my business partner uses my old deluxe, its been used in every block of jungle on earth and is five yeras old and going strong. velcro came unstitched through carelessness once but thats easy enough to fix. all my hennessy products have withstood the test of time in some truely demanding situations and have solid endurance. some of them have been used for half a year straight to sleep in.... being put up and taken down all the time. cant really fault them in terms of workmanship to be honest.
Used this system with the Ultralight/Backpacker and the Ultralight/Explorer. Worked fine, just remember to add a couple of safety knots after the ring pinch. No slips, no worries!
@mcsparron I figured it out--McSparron is correct, of course, part of the HH product ships with a thinner Spectra cord, and some of the less pricey models ship with a softer, larger diameter cord--as pictured in the video here. I actually thought his hands were smaller than mine, and his rappelling rings were smaller than mine--but I bought the very items in this video, and this solution doesn't work. Oh, well, this gives me impetus to make whoopie slings! Thanks for a great video! Jonathan
What if you were to just clip 2 biners through the strap and garda hitch those? I love this setup as you have it, but I'm hoping to simplify it / reduce weight.
@coolkayaker1 i would seriously reconsider using it for the ul bp. in my opinion the spectra chord is too thin and there is a high risk of the sheath breaking. its up to you at the end of the day but id just do it using the fat tree method instead rather than the garda hitch.
just a big thank you note for video currently I'm still practicing in the basement I think the weather is not cooperative. I currently do not have the snake skin but will add that to the wish list.
Hey mcsparron I have just purchased all the equip needed for this setup but I'm wondering what or how you attached your new rope to the original. Did you cut the original and if so what kind of knott did you use to attach the two lines? Thanks for your help mate
@AlFrosty they are a good company needle sports! hope you found them helpful! the hammocks are brilliant. remember to create as little friction as possible when you pull through to tighten up at the end, this will ensure as little damage as possible! dont wanna burn the sheath of the rope out! shouldnt happen with such fat rings but just be careful! quick release knot is vital, i tied a normal knot first time and nearly had to cut the rope!!!!
@kc7fys it will a little bit, but it depends how you do it. use your spare arm to take the weight off the chord as you tighten it to avoid friction burns on the sheath.
Now I'm wondering if this is a smart idea with the thin spectra cord, as Hiro below commented. It appears your cord is thicker and would interact differently with the rings. Hmm... Maybe it's whoopie time.
I have been researching the Hennessy Hammocks and watching all the available videos here on UA-cam. I just ordered an EXPLORER DELUXE A-SYM ZIP and want to get the components for the Garda system, as this seems to be the way to go. Would you post the exact components and sizes needed and where I might order them online here in the states. As I have no experience with any of this gear and it would be greatly appreciated. ,
@martycuff1 of course the garda hitch slips, it is not a knot. if you dont do the quick release knot that is shown in the video then you will just fall instantly onto the floor. the quick release knot will not slip under any circumstances.
Excellent system, new to this but find the ring knot slips a tad ,Is the rope smaller than the rings in diamiter ? ANY CHANCE YOU COULD SHOW THE GAUARDER HITCH KNOT AGAIN SOME TIME PLEASE Martycuff1 uk
@mcsparron no idea what you mean by that. mine "actually" came with my hammock. it is the original hh stock chord. maybe you have the thinner spectre chord and an ul hammock in which case, as stated in the description, this is not a good idea. if you dont tie a knot after the rings then of course it will slip.... thats obvious...
mine didnt work at first because the rings didnt gave enough of a diameter but if you wrap the rope around both rings two times it works, granted you have to pull harder and its a little more difficult to undo but it saves time and effort
You should look into upgrading the suspension to a whoopie sling - it is lighter in weight, requires no hardware, is simpler to adjust, weighs less, and IMO, better. check it out. I just made my own with about $10 in Amsteel Blue cord.
I have mine setup that way, but I was thinking recently of putting the rings at the hammock ends. That way, they act as a drip point for water running down the line, Have you by chance tried it?
@maadination its a quick release knot so it isnt fixed... you should just pull it and that part will come undone. to get the garda hitch undone you just push the rings together and it will slide out.
@johnlevity tree huggers come with ALL HH hammocks so far as i am aware..... if you dont have an HH hammock then you can buy tree huggers or similar ideas from many different places. they are basically a length of seat belt from your car, with two loops stitched in at each end.... they just stop the rope cutting into the tree by increasing the surface area over which the pressure is spread.....
@ragegap at the end of the video, in the credits: "for uk users, rap rings are avaliable from the ultra helpful needlesports" they are up north. I had a long email conversation with them about whether the rings were suitable and they were amazingly helpful. delivery time was epic. hope that helps.
I am a recent new owner of a Hennessy. I bought the carbiners and descending rings today. It really makes sense.
Thank You.. I do not often comment on videos, but when I find one like yours, it is deserving.. Very nice!.. truly innovative and informative..

glad it helped buddy! appreciate the comment too.
Same here.
Very nice and clean setup.
Thanks for this very useful tip.
Wow, this is perfect for a injury or something. The ability to do it one handed is amazing! thanks for the vid!
Thank you posting this video. I was just given a Hennessy Hammock for Christmas and I think I will definitely be trying your technique when setting up. You should sent to Hennessy with link. Seems that it would make setup much easier and faster for all campers. Thank you again
Brilliant. Used it for first time in rain and snow...worked perfectly. Fastest deploy ever.
glad to hear!!! watch out for wear and tear though!
Thanks man. Watched this video right after I got my hammock a few years ago. I wanted to let you know that I set it up just like this and can't imagine set up another way.

bought a hennesy hammock and rappel rings with my karibiner because of this video... thanks.. have not tried it yet but hope it all works out with my new hammock.

That is a simple but brilliant idea! Thanks for the posting. Ill get some repelling rings and a good karibiner tonight!
howd it work out in the end?
Fantastic! Was backpacking in japan for the past month and a half and got some great nights in the hammock in and around kyoto. Using this rig made it quick as anything to set up and take down! Even worked on big bamboo!!

That has just made my day such a quick simple and relatively cheap method for setting my hammock up thanks
Thanks a lot for sharing this! I've been using this technique ever since I've watched your video and it works great. It added a little extra weight with the hardware, but setup is fast. The Hennessy Hammock is awesome, I've been using one for years. I wish I saw your setup a while back

used in NZ backcountry on two 5 day trips. brilliant idea, thanks for uploading

Same!!!

Dude... This is brilliant: I'm running out to get the gear now!
Thanks!
So useful and easy, the mark of Genius. Thank you very much!
Thanks I am planning on getting a Hennessy and this looks like a great solution.
I'm gonna have to go try this with my explorer deluxe... this seems like a great method. Thanks!
@Austin Brantley instablaster =)
@Richard Jude thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Richard Jude it worked and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thank you so much, you saved my ass!
@Austin Brantley You are welcome xD
You sold me.....way cool setup! Thanks!
Awesome. I jst bought one of there hammocks and havnt had it out yet to try. I will add this to my kit.
Alright, I'll head to the trees and try this out, cheers mate! Much appreciated!
@whatpraytell im glad it was helpful! im going to do another one shortly on what to do if the tree huggers dont reach all the way round the tree, obviously you cant clip the carabiner on so you cant use the garda hitch.....but you can still use the rings will let you know when i post it up!

It really does work well. Can't wait to get out for a hang soon again.
The knot is easy to tie and is easily adjustable.

glad to hear its working.
Needle sport must have a new stock in since i phoned them ""HANDS UP"" new to this tried it with the quick release knot brill thanks for your reply
@rockynanach epic! thanks so much for taking the time to let me know! i hope it continues to work for you!
Great tutorial. I'm interested to find out where you got your Omega Pacific rappel rings from as I seem unable to find a UK supplier. Many thanks.
going to try that if the rings are not available at the camping store. Thanks for the idea
Nice video and good information thanks. I'm also using hennessy hammock for my 365 days in the woods expedition.
im a climber and it is irrelevant which heal crotch takes what part of the equipment. the load is carried along the spine regardless and everything being done is well within the 23kn rating and not being cross loaded. if anything, keeping the rings at the smaller end will ensure that the rings do not slide up towards the gate and offset the loading as this would greatly reduce the integrity of the carabiner.

Jimmy McSparron Thanks so much. Great to see it in action.. Jules
I use this method with my ultralight backpacker. Never had the rope slip - the small diameter still bites fine...
Wow. Fantastic. Thanks, on my way out to the shop now.
Oh, well, this gives me impetus to make whoopie slings! Thanks for a great video!
Jonathan
Your treehugger fits the tree perfectly. What do you do if the trees are bigger?
there is a specific video for that that ive made called big tree hanging method, please look at my channel for details...
Yea i wonder the same thing. I have the ultralight and i wonder if the rings would be able to pinch the smaller line still
great review, what size carabiner do you recommend for thos over 100kg?
great vid thanks for the update will be using that next time out with my sons.
Is the rope the same rope that comes with the Hammock or a stronger one. And if it is a different one what tipe of rope it is
What if you were to just clip 2 biners through the strap and garda hitch those? I love this setup as you have it, but I'm hoping to simplify it / reduce weight.
that's awesome, but how much extra weight do the 'biner and rings add? and what cord is that?
@ragegap my pleasure. be careful when using it all though! remember to create minimum friction when pulling the rope through....
I too live in the uk and was wondering where you got your Omega Pacific rappel rings, if you could let me know I would greatly appreciate it.
I wonder if Dyneema cord would work for this. It seems to have minimal slippage when tied and is stronger than paracord.
I currently do not have the snake skin but will add that to the wish list.
hope you managed to get out and about at last!
Sweet setup. Thanks for the tip.
So this sweet way to hang the Hammock would work with a Expedition Asym Zip right? It uses 10' long 1600 lb. test polyester rope.
I just use a pair of Nite Ize CamJam XTs, they do the exact same job and I "lock" the CamJams with either a couple of half hitches or a QRknot.
@danmagyver it has the thicker specter chord so it should be fine.
mine didnt work at first because the rings didnt gave enough of a diameter but if you wrap the rope around both rings two times it works, granted you have to pull harder and its a little more difficult to undo but it saves time and effort
You should look into upgrading the suspension to a whoopie sling - it is lighter in weight, requires no hardware, is simpler to adjust, weighs less, and IMO, better. check it out. I just made my own with about $10 in Amsteel Blue cord.
I would totally love to buy one of these, which one do you have ?
I have mine setup that way, but I was thinking recently of putting the rings at the hammock ends. That way, they act as a drip point for water running down the line, Have you by chance tried it?
@t42beal13t - from the looks of it he is using ~8mm static cord, the same as used by climbers for prussik loops.
Excellent video man! Thanks for sharing....
@mcsparron do the tree hugger straps come with the snake skins?
thanks Jimmy, alrady got my from Amazon
