This video follows the step-by-step instructions from Custom Tire Letters to install a set of tire letters. They designed the complete set based off the name if the car ( WIDEFOX ), and the logo I have been using for Basin Motorsports. They chose the green and yellow to compliment the Avery Dennison vinyl wrap, and give the tire letters some distinction. Did they knock it out of the park?

Excellent tutorial for folks like me who had no idea this was so engaging. Looks like an all-day activity one Saturday when I have absolutely nothing to do except drink beer
It took longer than I expected, but I tend to overdo things a bit searching for perfection. Cleaning seems to take the longest time of the whole process. Once you determine where to install them on your first tire, the next three go pretty quick. The older the tires are, the more time the cleaning takes. Thanks for watching!
Ray Grogan Hey ray, that reminds me, about 30 or so years ago, when i was 20yrs old, i had and old, beat up F100. One day i felt like changing the oil. So, i went to the auto part store, then I stopped at the convenient store and picked up a case of Budweiser. It took me all day and into the night. I actually had halogen lights set up. Lesson learned
Finally someone else who takes pride and the time to do the job the RIGHT way. Cut corners pay for it later
You have to be the only person in the world who would try to scrub rubber tires clean with a paper towel....
I’m the 2nd. I use them all the time !!
I'm the third
😂
What a fantastic tutorial. Very informative, you make a great instructor. Getting a set soon.
Glad it was helpful!
Very, very thorough. I have mine and ready to put on but wanted more info of do's and don't. This content helped out tremendously. Thank you!
I tried do make sure everything was overdone. Just take your time on them, and they will turn out great.
@@BasinMotorsports It came out great. Have people believing I bought the tires that way...tells me I did a very good job at it.
@@chrisislas1838 Awesome to hear! I'd say if people don't recognize they are added, you did great work.
Thanx for going into detail on how to do this. Took me 7hrs in 2 days but this video was very helpful.
Awesome that it could help!
Thanks, after I watched your video I installed using your methods...Came out really well took me 3 1/2 hours
Great to hear! You did it in half the time it took me. Filming and fumbling my way through it took a while.
yeah it takes time. took me 2 days. did 2 tires per day lol
What about whasing tire is it worth gor letter?
@@anything7087 The kit comes with a spray that you can use on a rag or towel to wipe the letters with. The instructions say not to use a tire dressing on the letters.
Subscribed just because I see all your hard work even to the simplest details.
This is a very detailed Installation. Excellent video👍
It's a little long, but I went overboard on details. Thanks for watching.
I'm doing this soon thank you for an excellent video.
Best of luck! They add a little something extra to your vehicle.
Just getting ready to do this right now! Great video!
You got this!
Watching this video just made me change my mind on putting tire letters if I have to be all day with this 😩😩
Mine are the permanent letters, so the extra adhesive is needed. You might try the temporary set, which should be less time. I went a little heavy on the adhesive, which has been a real PITA to take them, off this week.
@@BasinMotorsports I was going to go custom or just bring out the stock letters on the tire
@@Mr.Frost181 If you are just coloring the tires, you might try a tire paint pen. Should be less work, but it does fade over time.
@@BasinMotorsports that's what I was going to do lol but if I have to buy the one like this well I'll just do that then so it will last long

Proline RC TIRE GLUE IS A BETTER GLUE, my stickers have been on my tires for over a year, less over glue, quicker cure
Thanks you explain it very well looks good 😊
I noticed people say the letters comes off the tire why is that??
Do the tire letters last longer??
@@kennethstrode71strode37 there are two types: temporary (meant for less than a few thousand miles), or permanent (for 50,000 miles or so). I have the permanent type. If they are falling off, people didn't use enough adhesive or they have more temporary type. I've had no issues with mine in the 10 months I've had them.
Very helpful 😊
Got it and thanks again
GOOD JOB !!!!!
Thank you. I'm still happy with how they came out.
omg your the only one who describes this so well

Back in the day, raised white letter tires were everywhere. Now you have to put them on yourself.
I can remember buying tires year sago and they'd have to ask if you wanted the letters facing in or out. Now, many tires are directional and you have no choice for lettering.
@@BasinMotorsports Its interesting how tire choices have changed. I had a 66 Belvedere, a 67 AMC Ambassador, and a 78 Gran Prix, in the 80s and early 90s. All had white letter tires. Directional tires were unheard of really. These look great on today's performance autos.
Thank you sir.
You're welcome. Hope it helps!
Yikes! This seems like I need to have it done professionally lol. I bought some thinkin I could do it but, ya-nope…I’ll mess it up. GREAT TUTORIAL!!!! 🙋🏾♀️🙋🏾♀️❤️❤️
It's not such a bad job. Just take your time on it.
Seriously, you can do it. It's not as daunting as it seems once you try doing it yourself. Doesn't have to be the best job ever, just get a rag, acetone your tires and backs of the letters and tape them on where you think they should go, then just flip the letter set on to the top of the tire and "color inside the lines" with the glue and carefully bring them down to and press 30sec to seat. You can do it.
awesome! you sir are awesome
Genius! One thing im doing is using a AA battery to roll the letters on, like a rolling pin
That will get the air out. I like it.
Good video
I always use wood screws for a nice snug fit.
What do u mean ?
Great video.
Thanks!
Tried finding the adhesive itself on website, can't seem to find it. Must have to buy lettering to get it.
Custom Tire Letters doesn't sell the adhesive separately, but it is on Amazon. I believe I have a link in the description to the bottle on Amazon.
Ur a genius🙏
This is the most informative tire lettering video I've ever seen. Dude i dig those glasses. Where did you get them from? Consider me a subscriber. Oh i forgot to ask, do they make these for motorcycle tires to?
Glasses are 3M safety glasses with custom prescription lenses. Mine are about 10 years old probably.
Tire letters can go on motorcycle tires also. Just had to order them for motorcycle tires.
Hey not sure if you still read these comments, but that was a FANTASTIC tutorial!
I thought I heard some people speak of sanding down the raised lettering on the tire smooth for the aftermarket letters to stick.
It seems like you didn't have to do anything like that. Do they still stick fine after all that?
I read every comment. I didn't sand anything down beyond what I showed. The raised letters will stick fine if the prep is done well. Mine stuck with no issues for 2 years before and were a sumbitch to get off. Take your time and they will outlast the tires.
@@BasinMotorsports Dude, thanks so much man. I was worried I had to do more prep work. Just got new Michelin Pilot 4 S tires in for my 88 MK3 Supra and am putting said stickers that cover the logo (and are oversize) on each side. I was just worried since the lettering is raised it would botch it, but I completely trust you on this and I'm going to follow your instructions except that some of my letters are falling off the guide tape haha. I'll figure something out. You got a new sub.
It looks as if this is the same process as applying a bicycle tube patch, including holding pressure for 30 seconds. This seems to be a vulcanization of rubber process.
Are these letters made of the same material as a tube patch?
I don't know for 100%, but I would guess they are very close if not the same.
Any kind of good quality glue I can use that can be purchased in person at maybe a local parts store or somewhere other than ordering online? Thanks in advance
I don't know the chemical composition of the liquid adhesive to recommend something else. You might find something that can bond rubber to rubber locally. I have never looked.
Thank you for that great video. Clarify for me, that lettering is sticky at the back, do I have to remove that stickiness with acetone and thereafter apply the glue?
The letters are not sticky, so you do not need to clean them. The glue in the bottle is what holds them on the tire surface.
@@BasinMotorsports thank you
great video! , this was pretty helpful, new viewer here hope we can show luv 2 r channels 💕🙌🏽
Thanks! Adding some lettering to a project?
@@BasinMotorsports the homie is! check out our car channel its cre8tivegarage, im just the editor haha
Thank you for such a thorough guide! Isn't it better if you're taking the wheels all the way off anyway to do it on the ground? Then gravity works with you and you can position the letters easier?
You could do it that way just as easily. Whatever is easiest during the install process.
@@BasinMotorsports Im cleaning my wheels with acetone now... Remind me again why you said you need to use around ten towel wipes before proceeding? My paper towels are picking off the black grime from the rubber, but I wonder if that is forever going to happen or if it stops after ten passes... Oh, my tires are pretty much BRAND new, like 100 miles on em. Ive only put a shine on them once and I just washed the wheels with wheel and tire cleaner products.
@@KuyaPow626 The 10 rule was when my tires stopped leaving residue on the towels. If the tires are newer, they may not take as much work to clean. Mine were over a year old and had seen many road miles.
can you respray your tire gloss over the new tire letters or is that going to strip them
The instructions say to not use tire gloss, but doesn't say why. It may affect the dye for the color or the adhesive.
When washing the car and using degreasers on tires. Will these get damaged or fall off. How many washes would it last.
If they are colored, degreasers and tire shine can damage the coloring supposedly. I never had an issue with hand washing the tires with car wash solution. Mine stayed on for 2 years with no problems. I sold the car and took them off at that point.
Hello sir! I am wondering if you still have the lettering on your tires and if so how are they holding up?
I sold the green Mustang in April 2021 and the new owner asked for them to be removed. They were on for 2 years with no issues.
Question.... My tires have raised black letters. The sidewall isn't smooth. It's a 20" BfGoodrich All terrain will the letters work over these raised black letters?
They will work over raised letters. My tires had black raised letters too. Just be sure to wet out the letter well and you should have no problems.
Maybe weird question, but can you also use scale model tire glue like traxxas, or flexible all in one kit.
This special tire glue is hard to find in my country.
Not sure if it can be used. It sounds possible. Have you contacted Custom Tire Letters to ask? Rob (the owner) should be able to help if you email him.
@@BasinMotorsports I found some good glue, either way thanks for your reply.
Also, isn't acetone harmful for the tire and rim finish, if you leave it like that. I've read that you need to wash it off with water and soap first. I'm scared for it to eat away my rims lip.
@@CrimxSun I never got it on my wheels, so I can't say.
Looks 👍
Thanks 👍
Do you place the sticker directly over the original black lettering i.e. "BFG ALL TERRAIN' or must it be a smooth section?
The smoother the better, but they will go over the BFG letters. My tires weren't thick lettering since they are low profile, but the A/T may have thicker letters.
What is the actual web site name to order please
How did it work for you ? How long did the letters last on wheels is the adhesive strong?
I had them on for two years before I sold the car. I never had any issues with the adhesive, and they were tough to remove. I have a video removal video also on the channel, so you can see how well the adhesive can hold up.
@@BasinMotorsports Awesome thanks for the quick response 👍
Ok so I purchase Felcon letterings but my letters come a black rubber so the letters on stuck to this black rubber how do I install them to my tires
Do the letters have a clear transfer material like what I used? Are you supposed to peel the letters from the rubber they came on and transfer to your tires? What brand are the letters (who did you buy them from)?
Should I grind the molded lettering on the tires down to have smooth surface on the tire ??
No. You can just go over them if they aren't too large (thick). My BFGs had lettering that I just covered up.
I wish I sanded them flat first. One thing I will mention is to not push with all your force when putting these on, it will cause them to dry with Indentations where your fingers were pressing. Sort of just let the adhesive do the work, and you just hold them in place
Hey where did you get the stickers from ??
Directly from Custom Tire Letters. There is a link and discount code in the video description.
Just a question. I did it once with my bike but because the wheels aren't free it was an 8 hours pain in the ass to do it right. Now my new tires are on the way and so are the new set of letters but I wonder if I can prep the tires first and once they are finished have them mounted to the rims. The question is; Is this possible with the letters already on there?
You can do the letters before mounting the tires. The shop will need to be careful not to damage the letters. I would put a layer of painters tape or something easy to remove on the letters to prevent any scuffing while the tires are mounted.
If the shop is just mounting the tires, and you will be putting the wheels back on the bike, I'd do them after the tires are mounted but before the wheels go on the bike.
@BasinMotorsports Thank you for the fast reply. To use the protection is good advice I didn't think about. Yes they will install them for me. To put the tires on there and remove the wheels as I did think about but for that I need a lift. I'm going to try it the other way and post feedback on your video. It might be useful for your audience. Thanks man!
I just put on the tire letters and when the glue was still wet i sprayed the cleaner directly on the tire and there’s a huge mess on a part of the tire what’s the best way to clean it up it’s around 2 letters
Try acetone.
Do you still use tire shine on ur tires n does it make the letters look dirty
The instructions specify not using tire shine, so I've never tried it.
I bought some new tires and added the stickers before mounting and putting air in them. Is that bad
No. The installer just needs to be careful not to damage them. Otherwise OK to do beforehand.
How long does this process take for all four tires ?
Plan on 6 hours if you follow my video. It took me 8 because I had to film and adjust things as I went.
What kind of glue is that ..bc mine doesn't ship with glue bc its flammable
There is a link in the video description to the proper adhesive.
The size you get is the size on your tires right ? For example if my tire said 22 X 9.0-in? I would get the tire stickers that say 21+?
Yes. The height of the letters is dependent on the size of the tires.
@@BasinMotorsports okay thank you !
Awesome video, very thorough! Quick question. How long did it take for your letters to arrive? Thanks!!
I think it was about 4-6 weeks before they arrived. I don't remember it being a quick turn around since mine were custom designed.
@@BasinMotorsports Thanks for the quick response you the man!
what is the brand of the tire letter glue?
and kit cleaner name and brand.
I got the kit through Custom Tire Letters. They are a partner of Tire Stickers, and you can find extra glue under Tire Stickers. I've seen it on Amazon among other places. If you go through CTL, there is a link to their site and a discount code in the description.
Can you galvanize letters to tires?
No. Galvanizing is adding a layer of zinc to iron or steel for protection.
Can I use brake cleaner or do I need acetone specifically?
The instructions specify acetone as it doesn't dry out the rubber. Brake cleaner would probably work, but I didn't try it.
@@BasinMotorsports
Never, never use brakecleaner.
I will leave a resedue and it wouldn't stick.
I was wondering. I just bought new rims and tires. You think it'll be better to put the lettering on before I install the rims.
I'd do it after. Less chance that they will be damaged during tire mounting, and you can use the rim as a visual gauge where the letters look best spaced.
@@BasinMotorsports thank you sir. Awesome job.
Amazing video!! What size are they?. .... 1inch or 1.25 inch??
1.25 inch for an 18" low profile tire.
@@BasinMotorsports thank you.. So i might need 1.25 inch. For my tire 20"
Sorry, just measured. Mine are 1.25". I would ask Custom Tire Letters what size they recommend for a 20" tire. They picked the 1.25" for mine.
I stop usng tyre sricker once you hit the curb or other wall it's gone n you going to purchase again and again...I use paint pen if ut hit curb I just paint it again...
where can i get the material used for cutting the letters?
I can find the lettering material off a Google search for "tire stickers".
Would you say this glue is like tire patch adhesive?
Patch adhesive is more jelly-like than this when I used it last. This stuff is like super glue. It's very liquid.
@BasinMotorsports Thanks I ended up using 401 glue, it's on ebay for like $2/ bottle. Smells like superglue, and seems to be working perfectly.
I would have thought something more flexible would be better as it's on the sidewall.
Where did you purchase the stickers from??

This is a job in itself. Well done and I really like the look but way too much hassle, there is no easy way to do this.
Some skip the last step of sealing the edges to save some time. It's quite a job though if you do it all in one long process.
what was the adhesive you used? i bought letters, but i don't believe they provided me with it
My kit came with a bottle of adhesive. Tire Stickers does sell a bottle of adhesive on Amazon or through their website if you need one.

I had the letters on for 2 years without a problem. I removed them when I sold the car.
I'm going to buy raised white letter tires from the factory.... I'm old skool and understand bleach white . We just spray wash the car then rinse soap the tire and finish wax the car and then gloss with tire wet sponge....
The custom is badass but I don't see it lasting the way I abuse my tires
I didn't drive the car as much as I hoped to. They held up for my level of use, and yeah it was quite a job without the filming.
Mine were impossible to keep WHITE...and they peeled off after a few months....I had plenty of glue on them and some of them got torn or cut as if they were rubbing on the pavement....IS 250 Lexus low profile tires....I want to put more letters on again....but I need to know how to prevent these issues since the letters are not cheap....
Thanks for posting this! I was wondering if they would stay on or not.
Mine are seriously stuck on. I tried to take one letter off just to see how well they are doing after 1.5 years. It would barely let a corner up.
For me personally since I have low profile tires as well is just to either sand the entire tire down and then place or, get the sleek size for your title as the letters won’t be too close to the ground if you place them at the edge of the tire above the wheel. I had 1 inch lettering but sanded the tire down and it was fine for a couple years and some were ripping but no issues otherwise. I just recently got new tires same size and I went smaller this time to 0.75. I’m going to install them this week.
What's size lettering 1 inch or 1.25inch
Mine are 1.25 inch letters.
So how long for the whole job
4-8 hours depending on how dirty the tires are and how thorough you are. It took me 8 including filming.
Are those the f14 rims
No. Rovos Pretoria 18x10.5"
did you rebalance the wheels after applying your stickers?
No. You don't need to.
@@BasinMotorsports cool, thanks for the quick response! Great tutorial btw
Can you also count Arkansas?
Yes, but I say Arkansas a little faster. I may have to say 35 Arkansas.
How long does it last??
It depends on which version you buy. I have the permanent set, and they are 1.5 years old. No issues with mine and they may outlast my tires.
Can you put letters on tires that have dupilcolor on them?
You can, but I am doubtful the letters will stick well.
@@BasinMotorsports even if given a sufficient amount of time to dry?
@@eveistrongsaint893 The adhesive causes a vulcanization process to occur between the rubber letter and the tire surface. The duplicolor may prevent the proper reaction. You can try it and see what happens.
