Originally in the script the brief scene where Woodbury soldiers gang up on and beat Merle wasn't there at all. The Governor simply picked Merle up after struggling with a walker, yelled "Leave him to me!" and beat him in the warehouse. The scene where Merle gets stomped on by Woodbury guards was added by Michael Rooker's suggestion, as he believed that unless he was weakened beforehand Merle could beat the Governor in a fight.
Let in the last episode they had the Governor fight and beat 15 or more walkers lol.
Based on the way both characters were portrayed, I disagree with Rookers opinion. Merle was portrayed as a strong dude but The governor is portrayed as extremely strong, the way he handled those walkers in the pit and the way he almost beat Rick to death...he's arguably the strongest the the whole series.
Merle could easily beat the Governor in a fight, because all he had to do was stab him with that hand blade of his...never understood why he didn't do that.

One of the hardest deaths to take in the show. It felt premature but I respect how they made it more realistic that he does not just get to finish his character arc.
I ain’t gonna beg I ain’t begging you were not only Merle’s last words but he also said that back in Season 1 when he was all alone on the rooftop in Atlanta He isn’t talking to the Governor in his last moments He’s talking to the same person he was talking to back on the rooftop God He sees all of this (being handcuffed to the roof being killed by the Governor) as punishment for the things he’s done but he has never once begged for God’s forgiveness and he wouldn’t even do it in his final moments Very touching moments Merle Dixon was truly one of the most complex characters in TWD history He will be missed RIP

The way you guys were biggin' up old Merle - "he could be one of our group for good"... Honestly, we've all been there. Somehow, Chance has no tearducts but good on ya, Jason, for showing how this show gives you hope then cuts it all right out of ya!
All this is testimony to the great writing and the brilliant characterisation of Merle from Michael Rooker and his nuanced acting. How he made us despise him, laugh at him, get angry with him, disappointed at him, hate him beyond reproach, then respect him, understand him, and want him to be a leader in our own group! AMAZING character development!

What an episode! I'm glad that Merle still was a bit of a douche while trying to do the right thing. That and his talk with Daryl just shows he was not ready to be accepted after everything he did.
While it would've been nice to see Merle a bit longer like it was planned solely that he's hilarious, his death was amazing way to end his arc and fitting with his character. I feel like Merle is the best character of season 3 and he gave something unexpected, Daryl's cry. That scene just shows how much the Group changed Daryl's acceptance of people and passion
Merle was a great character. The Governor shot him in the chest. There is the Daryl crying meme.
I always thought Daryl was not only broken by Merles death, but angry in a way, feeling that Merle left him again, but this time, for good. Merle went out trying to be heroic for Daryl, and redeemed himself as best as he could. It was one of the saddest deaths. No one could help but cry.Great reaction guys.

5:30 there’s a deleted scene where carol says to merle ””ive seen u making the rounds trying to play nice, but if u screw this up, mess with daryl, i wilk slit your throat while you sleep” u can look up the whole clip just search carol merle deleted scene
That’s for the best, scenes like that are generally pretty cringe. Plus, it’d be pointless because Merle is the type of person who doesn’t respond to threats or intimidation.
Merle took out 8 of Woodburys primary task force, he wanted to do right before leaving the world and ended up giving the group a chance. If you notice his last words “I ain’t begging you” were the same words he used when speaking to God when he was cuffed on the rooftop.

As for Daryl being a leader, I think he'd be a good leader, but it's not in him. He's a right hand man. He thrives in that role

I loved this episode Merle trying to take out as many of the Governor’s men was very heroic I believe he did it because he really did love his brother and I wish Merle would have lasted longer.
It broke my heart to see Daryl cry He’s such a strong person on the outside but inside he has a big heart.

In this episode, I'd like to think that Merle didn't want to stay bcuz he felt a bit of guilt for what happened to maggie and glenn. So he refuses to stay bcuz of what he did which led to them being hurt by the governor.

Thinking back to the first time we meet Merle and Daryl, would you ever think to have such deep feelings for what went down here? Because I sure as hell didn't. I was so mad after this episode because just when we start to see Merle and understand why he is who he is, it's all snatched away. And Daryl, my favorite character (and everyone elses, lol) lost his brother in such a devastating way. RIP Merle Dixon. You gave your life trying to take out the Governor. A hero's death.
One of the show's biggest mistakes was killing Merle off. He's still to this day, one of the most underrated characters and brought a certain charm to the show. I still go back and watch his great lines over anything else TWD related. Sucks that they didn't keep Michael Rooker around.
Never really felt for Merles death, because personally I never liked the character. I felt for Daryl thought because that's his brother regardless of how much of an Ass he is.

I worked a walker stalker con... got to meet a chunk of the cast... rooker (Merle), and I got to talk. We're both mad at the directors for killing him... why do all of rookers' characters get killed on their redemption arcs?! 😶😔😅
Merle should have lived a lot longer. The fact he let Michonne go was big for his character. He stepped up a lot it’s him and T-Dog I wish lasted much longer. It would have been so interesting to see their interaction after not seeing eachother for many months to a year or year and a half. I wonder if they would have patched things up slowly. It should have been that way. Besides, T-Dog was actually originally (going into season 3) supposed to live and become a main character and survivor in the group. Sad it never went that way. I would’ve loved to see a shit ton of development from his character.

This episode always gets me in the feels I can’t handle it when Daryl cries Merle was a product of an abusive home just as Daryl was Exposure to Daryl’s new family short though it was changed his heart and his redemption was true I sure am gonna miss Merle he went out a hero wish he lasted longer he truly redeemed himself RIP Merle.

Merle was definitely one capable soldier and wish he had stayed longer so he could develop to more better person but still in the end he died and went to a suicide mission to try to take out the governor and his more capable troops just so he could protect his brother.
Definitely top 10 saddest moment in the show just for how distort and sad deril was and that he didn't want to kill his brother but had to so he wouldn't stay like that.
