I grew up watching Roland Martin and Bill Dance. Got away from fishing for over 20 years and when I come back y’all are still here teaching me. Though I’m still backlashing…. God bless y’all. Have a great weekend.
In 30 years of using casting reels and picking out backlashes I’ve picked up a couple of tricks…Stop the spool when your bait hits the water…Like you said, keep your thumb on the spool. I always use a line dressing spray….Also, whether I’m using braid or mono, I always have a fluorocarbon leader of about 10 feet…Thank you for your wealth of knowledge and experience…I love you brother. You’ve touched more hearts than you could ever possibly know…
Thank you very much for your help, I just bought a Soleus XCS casting reel. I really like this reel but I needed help. I been away from fishing for 40yrs, a month ago I caught my first bass, what a blast. I just found your channel, thank you so much for your help. I'm hooked. Lol
Thank you for sharing and teaching the many techniques you do. They are so well explained I save many of them by taking notes and saving many of the videos too to a specific folder which contains only your content. Also your sponsor's should be happy, I buy lots of the tackle you present catching fish. Wish a big 15 pounder blessing to you. Thanks Roland for all you do.
I put on new lures the night before and hold my rod at 11:00. I adjust the lure drop indoors to where the lure drops slowly but freely to the floor. I check my phone for wind direction and speed through out the time I will be fishing also. I fine tune the reel on the first couple of casts. To get the reel just right for distance also. I clean my reel's to get debris out of area's that might hinder my casts. Then put reel grease on the line bar. So I am just about where I want to be at the site I am fishing. I bring four rods and reel's. One Spinning combo and three Baitcaster's combo's. Topwater, Crank, Chatter and a Senko. Texas Rigged or Wacky. I'll change to a Spinnerbait on the Spinning combo if all fails at the end. I cover all bases. Then go at it. For a least 4 hrs. Set myself up catching the biggest bass I can find. Work's for me. I am a bank fisherman. Haven't been skunked in years. Shawn.
Thank you Roland for doing this video. I was raised using Zepco reels and now bought me a open face bait caster which is a little challenging to use. Let,s say you just don't push the button and release on the cast. I have had several messes to fix and will keep berkley line in business for sure. LOL Thanks again for explaining it so well and after the adjustments i made and working on the thumb pressure I think it will all fall in place. Please Keep These Videos coming.
As always Son keeping us all well educated on line and bait casting. Reading the comments, the love and respect for Roland, educating ever chance he can is priceless. Passing it forward at his age he knows he could keep all his knowledge, but he Loves sharing to everyone. Educating is in his blood.
Thanks for the vid Roland! I might be in the minority here but could you do a quick video on how to effectively hold a big bass? I caught a lunker using the senko you recommended and he tore up my thumb bad
Could you demonstrate how you set up the reel when you're flipping? I find with regular settings there's too much tension and the bait goes nowhere (unless using very heavy baits). The tensions have to be set a lot less for flipping.
I have been watching for a while now and I don’t think it’s all editing that makes me think this but you have an insane bite to hookup ratio. Can you spend a few episodes on anything to help with that
I'm 10 seconds into this video. And I gotta say. Funny how you posted/this came up, into my news feed. The other day I whip lashed my baitcaster into a bush and had a massive bird nest. I just ended up slicing it all up. Hurt asf.
Try turning the reel handle up when casting it like takes all the backlash out when casting I almost never backlash when I turn the handle up no matter what setting unless I hit something lol
Fluorocarbon is overhyped. Have stopped using it for anything other than a leader...and change it often. Very brittle. Can't take the abuse of regular casts. Stretches as much or more than mono. Only (possible) advantage is that it is less visible and sinks a little better than mono. But I fish in mostly stained water. No advantage for me to use the overpriced stuff!
This is the reason I have good quality spinning reels on every rod I own. Before flipping the bail after casting, just look for any loops. Best thing you can use after dark. Don't think so? Just try to get that backlash out in the dark. Taking twist out? Cut off the lure and drop empty line in the water when moving the boat, leaving the bail open, and let the empty line spool out behind you. Reel it back up through the water and see that twist magically come out. When putting a worm on, make sure it hangs straight and the twist is lessened to begin with. If hooking 'wacky', you have to untwist a little more often. Don't be fooled. Baitcaster line can twist too!
I need someone in the NJ area to teach me how to cast a bait caster. I spent a lot of money on this rod and have not been able to figure out how to cast with it. If anyone is in Essex county or closer that would like to help me learn plus shoot me a phone number.
Just takes a lot of practice. Start off with the magnetic brake adjustment at highest setting, and practice thumbing the spool. Start with short distance casts and work your way to longer casts, as you get better, you can lower the magnetic brake setting, but it takes a lot of practice. If all fails, there's always open bail casting reels. The fish can't tell the difference. Good luck👍
@@duanebrown3877 thank you for the advice. I’m using braid and my rod has small holes for the line to thread through whereas my spinning rod has larger eyelets. Can these small eyelets on the bait caster be part of the problem?
@@michaelgraves704 No, on baitcasters the line doesn't come out in a circular pattern like a spinning reel where you need big guides. It is level wind so small eyes are what you need. You just need practice. You will pick it up. Don't quit.
I wasn't expecting such an educational video about this problem. Roland, you are a fantastic teacher.

Teaching the world to fish one topic at a time. Thank you for another quality lesson.

I typically use Fluro as leaders on braid as opposed to filling the entire reel with Fluro
Thanks for posting tbese basic videos, exactly what someone like me needs! Could you upload other videos like how to remove a deep hook?
Roland is the man!!! Let's go fishing someday. I live by Lake Erie.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us Roland and thanks for sharing all your videos with us also. God bless you sir.🙏❤🙏😊
LOVE these beginner to moderate-level vids!
Great line tutorial on baitcast reels. Thanks Roland!
Thanks Roland we appreciate your hard work to teach us your tips. God Bless and thanks again
I love a terminator spinnerbait few weeks ago by leaving looo on spool... hard cast and terminator lives deep in pond now. Hard lesson to learn.
If you set the magnets to stop when it hits the water, your good. As you get better, you can back it off more and use more thumb work.
Hi Roland great video thanks
Great information Professor Martin. Thank you! 👍👌🎣
Yes sir you must stop the spool as the bait hits the water or oh man lookout
What's your thoughts on hybrid line?
Thank you Roland.

Thanks for the tip on the loop deal thats one I did not no Thanks RM 👍👍

No spool tension, brakes at 60% - 70% on.
My reel says it can only do 12 lb test but the pole says 15 can I put heavier line then the reel says ?

Thanks for sharing
Good tips as always!!🇺🇸
Thanks for the video!!!
I never have a bird's nest.
I take my cane pole to the grocery store and buy some fish. 😂

thanks for the great info

You mean so the handle is perpendicular to the rod? I've never heard that before and I'm trying to understand exactly what you mean.

@@smurfjones66 Thanks! I can't for the life of me understand how this could help but I'm willing to try.

Yeah, paying attention when casting is a must when fishing. Not overfilling spools. Small things make a difference.
Best thing to do is start with a good rod and reel, not free sponsored junk
