We were welcomed by gloomy weather on our way to Mt. Cook. We made a quick stop at the Lake Pukaki lookout and the views are still stunning nonetheless. The lake looked so calm and serene.
The Hooker Valley Track is one of the famous walks in New Zealand and it is one of our most anticipated activities of our South Island Adventure. In fact, we told ourselves that no matter what the weather is, we will finish the walk unless of course the track is closed. Unluckily, we were tested by the New Zealand weather. It was raining and we thought the track would probably be closed but we kept on walking until we reached the 1st bridge and we were so happy that it was open. Mt. Cook is still breathtaking on an overcast day.
But suddenly, the wind started to get crazy just as we reached the 2nd bridge. It was pretty strong and intense. Gabriel did cry at some point not because he doesn’t want to finish the walk but because of the howling of the wind. However, we were so determined to reach Hooker Lake, and almost every person we met encouraged and told us that we are so close to the end so we kept on pushing and it paid off. It felt so rewarding to reach the lake though we didn’t spend so much time in there coz the weather is getting worse. The walk going back is easier since we are not walking against the wind. We were all glad that we did finish the Hooker Valley Walk safe and sound, and were finally able to rest and eat in our accommodation.
Yet, we are not done with our Mt. Cook adventure. We did another walk at the Tasman Glacier, with a side trip to the blue lakes, on a lovely sunny day. It is a great family walk and beginners hike under the beautiful Mt Cook.
Visiting Mt. Cook National Park was really one of the highlights of our South Island adventure and definitely a memorable one.
