Even tho Gordon took the saw away from Hoffman in Saw 3D, Hoffman could just as easily punch his ankle 500 times & break it to get out 😂. Dude has 100 in Survival😂
6:39 He was a control freak who wanted complete control of the games so they'd go the way he wanted them to rather than John's "We'll see what happens" attitude.
Remember that man who had a cardiac disease and asked William Easton for coverage and got denied? Well, we never see his corpse so we can't say he's dead I'm clearly joking btw
Here's my prediction. Hoffman is still alive. He saved Jeff's daughter, probably adopted her than recruited her to design the traps with him, she was only a kid so it won't be that easy to manipulate her and take down Dr. Gordon and redesign the nature of the game.
as a huge fan of the saw movies, i always feared Hoffman more than Kramer. sure, Kramer was extremely intelligent and he used his powers of manipulation to beat you. but Hoffman was equally as intelligent, sure he wasnt an engineer but as a cop he had the street smarts. he was strong, large, muscular, well-trained, ruthless and a merciless murderer if this guy even looked at me funny i would probably back down. if it came down to it i'd take my chances against john kramer the dying cancer patient, than this guy
Hoffman had both the brains and the brawn. He also had a lot of the resources left over from John. The only thing John had over him was experience, which he partly passed on, and planning. Hoffman couldn’t plan as well, and missed that John was always at least one step ahead.
I can't even look at his actor in any other live-action medium without thinking "Oh, hello, Mark Hoffman." He played another character in NCIS, but I only see Mark Hoffman. I try to keep it to myself. Same with Laura Vandervoort. Played Anna in Jigsaw. I see her playing a teacher in a Hallmark movie and I could barely keep my eyes on her without thinking of her character back to SAW.
29:34 this is my favorite part of the SAW franchise and a example of good writing: The line double meaning of the line "Right now, you are feeling helpless" is amazing. Mark was talking about Seth, but in this scene he's the one that's "feeling helpless" because he got exposed for pretending to be Jigsaw.
Hoffman was actually named after Gregg Hoffman, series producer and co-founder of Twisted Pictures. He sadly passed away after Saw II, but they honored him with the character of Hoffman, and with a producer credit for the main seven films.
Hoffman was a beast. Not only was a an elite detective, but he was also a survivalist, who would brute force his way out of any situation, just to survive. I could see him doing literally anything, not to die in that bathroom.
Since I believe the entire Saw-saga was not set in stone from day 1, I find it impressive how well the movies fit together as a coherent saga even with the details being ironed out as new movies were written. It really feels more like a tv-show than a movie if you watch it back-to-back. It seems they had plans for Hoffman though given his really small part in III.
I think Jill was always meant to give Hoffman his 2nd test left by John. I even think he was meant to escape it. I think the lesson he was supposed to learn was to let go of revenge. He didnt so Gordon had to step in.
@@kirby8252 Why? John is a serial killer, he has no remorse. He cares more about the irony of his games, and the symbology than anything else. He has a god complex
Doctor Gordon is my favorite character in the saga, but Hoffman is a close second. Having a 40-minute video all about his history makes me so happy, especially seeing all of the detail and work you put into this. Thank you for this awesome walk down memory lane

Hoffmann was honestly my favorite character in the whole Saw franchise...even more than John. I will not accept the fact that he is dead. He’s also one of my favorite killers in all of horror. I have a tiny glimmer of hope he will return in Saw X if that movie still happens.
Same.. i cried at the end of Saw 3d and the fact he is nog in the JigSaw movie... but then I had hope that he was still alive and that there would be a Saw movie that continued at the end of Saw 3d and that Hoffman is still alive ... but when he turns out to be dead I really go crazy

He was an amazing character, but im actually pretty okey with him dying there. As John said, he was way too confident (megalomania) and went untested for too long
13:40 I think John knew. Why else would Amanda's first test be about getting a key from someone's BELLY? I think Billy appears in person after she wins the game because Billy represents Gideon Kramer forgiving Amanda for killing him. Also John knows everything
I can’t lie - as a dedicated fan from the get-go, I really wasn’t so stoked about Saw 3D/The Final Chapter when it was first announced. However, I’ve found its existence more forgivable over the years…solely because of the ending. It’s just so dang satisfying to watch…even though the “bad guy” getting what they “deserve” is still violence. It just feels...right? 🤔
Hoffman is my most favorite villain/character in the Saw series, in a way he was practically the only jigsaw apprentice who was sane, honest, sensible, and down to earth. John was delusional, hypocritical and ignorant of the fact his methods were disproportionately petty and spiteful, he even had the gall to be in denial and self-righteous about it and while Amanda did not deny she was nothing but a killer, she believed that everyone was irredeemable and that she was the only exception, Hoffman knew that he was a dangerous, ruthless, cold-blooded, malevolent, vengeful, amoral, sadistic psychopath who indulged in hurting and murdering men and women and made no pretension about it
I was born in 97 and I remember telling my sister durning saw 2 that the doctor was helping John. I mean come on!! He was limping durning the eye trap video that was shown at the beginning of saw 2! I’ll never forget watching saw 7 in theater with my sister and seeing Dr Gordon alive!
Hoffman having to come up with his own escape in the RBT is why he is one of my favorite parts and it justifies his killing of Jill tuck since at that point she ruined Jigsaw by also performing essentially murder
Agreed you would have thought the FBI agents would have known better. But the precinct slaughter too was savage...how he was able to fool everyone being in a bodybag!
@Ace IKR it was perfect. You can see the wheels in Hoffman’s head turning as they were getting closer and closer. I felt so bad for that technician though. I’m sure she was completely in the dark about Hoffman and had no idea the danger she was in.
two things make this series super fun to watch. 1. every video he talks as if no one has seen the movies before 2. the cliffhangers before ads kinda like old cable shows
I'm surprised you didn't mention the irony of Lawrence taking the saw blade away and throwing it across the room How Hoffman finally knows how it feels to have a trap be rigged on you so you have to die. Same for Amanda when the note for her was switched out. The irony of both of them having rigged traps. Amanda in particular is literally given the wrong information Allison was with the key in the acid and Troy in the classroom trap. But still, Hoffman had his trial tampered with by another apprentice like what he did to Amanda. He gets a taste of his own medicine too.
I really appreciate the way you edit your videos to compliment the ad breaks. The transition makes me let the ads play everytime because they never disrupt the flow of your videos. That, my friend, is an appreciated forethought.
Is there any chance you’ll cover Peter Straum? I know we don’t learn that much about him really but he’s my favourite character in the whole Saw franchise! Maybe you could do a video covering Straum and Perez?
Watching these horror history videos on the SAW characters is reminding me how intricate and impressive this storyline is within the movie. It's also evident how much time you put into these videos, amazing job!!
John was a mad philosopher with a god complex, but Hoffman is like Batman, only broken. I love this guy. He makes sure that no bad guy can sleep peacefully.
I met costas a few years ago and he did say to me that Hoffman could still be alive as we didn't see or hear what happened to him. I'd love to see him back or atleast mentioned in a future film!
I'm a horror hound that has recently finally watched all the saw movies. (had only watched 1-3) All I have to say is, for me, Hoffman was the best thing to happen to this franchise. Was really hoping he would make an appearance in spiral...
That voice analysis sentence "Right now you are feeling helpless" is just perfect. Shows what Hoffman said and his current predicament in that room. Agent Hoffman should have been the ultimate winner here. It's unfortunate that Dr Gordon put him in the room without that handsaw. This means Hoffman is likely dead. If Dr Gordon couldn't escape without the handsaw then Hoffman can't either. Also, Hoffman was put in that room as punishment. He's not supposed to escape. It's an unwinnable game at that point. Hoffman most likely died from starvation or not enough water. I don't see how he can escape without that handsaw. A Gerber MP600 multitool saw won't do it if that's on his person either. At least, I don't think so. Those have small saws. The only way Hoffman could survive is from outside help who knows where he is or is searching for him.
Do not forget that Eric Matthews escaped WITHOUT using a hacksaw. He instead broke his foot to get it out. Exactly something Hoffman would do, and actually he did a similar thing to escape a Reverse Beartrap that he was left to die in-broke his thumb/part of his hand, and pulled the device through his cheek after it could not fully open (since he put the front of it between two bars before it went off). While I think it’s a tossup on whether he died in that room or not, point is he’s one resourceful dude and can take lots of punishment. Also, I’m pretty sure that him almost immediately going for the hacksaw means he’s probably been in that room before. What if the dude hide stuff in the room in case he got put in there against his will? Crazy, maybe far-fetched, but I wouldn’t put it past him. Bottom line is we need to be shown what happened aftee he was left in there, and while it maybe be 50/50 on his fate, I refuse to believe he did not at least TRY to free himself.
Eric used the toilet to break his own foot. Why Laurence cut his foot off instead of at least breaking it abit, if not just for cutting it, will always be crazy to me 😂
The first movie I watched from the series was Saw VI so that was the first time I met the character Hoffman and thought "that's one brutal psycho", I didn't imagine he had a way more "peaceful" past as a mundane police officer until I watched all the movies in order. To measure the level of brutal in my mind, I was very afraid of him; not John, not Amanda, not anyone else, just Hoffman.
I always keep a sliver of hope that Hoffman made it out of the locked room somehow..he was such an interestign character that its hard to accept its ended
Love Saw, love Hoffman, love CZsWorld. I've seen this video more times than I've seen the Saw movies themselves probably. It's more than just a timeline, it's a real deep-dive into the character and the motivations behind everything he does. This channel is one of the best places a horror fan could be.
One of the best details of the descrambling scene is the fact that the line being used actually mirrors what must be going through Hoffman's head during it, it was a real thing of beauty.
It's difficult to believe Hoffman would just go down like that. This is a guy who ripped his own face apart to escape the reverse bear trap, evaded and manipulated the FBI right under their noses for a long ass time and didn't hesitate to jump for the hacksaw to cut off his own foot. He's intelligent and relentless and he'll do anything and everything to survive and get what he wants. On another note, 41 minute long video!?! 0:44 I never thought i’d be on the verge of tears due to wholesomeness from anything saw related. but honestly, still crediting a now deceased producer just really tugs at my my heart
Saw is one of my favorite franchises and I would say it’s probably my favorite horror movie series, but I’m gonna be 100% honest for a second here - when these movies were first releasing in theaters, I was completely unable to tell Detective Hoffman and Agent Strahm apart. I got them confused and kept swapping their character traits with each other in my head, like thinking the FBI agent was the apprentice, the Detective was chasing a mole in the department, the Detective killed the FBI agent’s sister’s killer, etc etc. it made the already confusing plot absolutely chaotic LOL. I was around 18 years old at this point so I can’t blame it on being young or anything like that hahaha.
I'm hoping in the future he makes a video about Strahm. I feel like he's a pretty important character in the series so maybe he'll get a video of his own?
For some reason I still believe that he managed to survive the bathroom. I mean come on...Does Mark Hoffman look like the kind of guy who chains can hold him? The moment he regained consciousness he tried to cut his leg. My money is on him I'm sure that he found a way out. And don't forget the fact that he is a detective which means he has skills. Let's hope we will find out in future movies
I don't remember the details right now, but if Hoffman's chain in the bathroom is secured with a padlock, he could easily open it by hitting it from above, close to the latch, with enough force from any other item around, possibly even his hands. He wouldn't even need to break his own foot or cut himself to escape (also, rewatching the first Saw movie with this in mind was kinda funny). Given how strong he is, I truly hope we haven't seen the last of him. Having him and Gordon go head-to-head or even working together in a future movie would be so epic 👌
When you brought up reverse and reverse-reverse psychology and so on, I could only think of that Samurai Jack scene where Jack said "I knew that you knew that I knew that you knew I knew you'd cheat"
These horror histories are so awesome!!! I’ve seen these movies so many times and sometimes have a hard time with placing the timelines. This helps so much! Love it!

I really appreciate it. You make watchers feel comfortable. That’s highly underrated. I’ve spent the last week watching all your videos from oldest to newest. Keep it up 👍🏿
28:34 There's an after credits scene for Saw VI set during III where Amanda goes to the room Corbett's locked in and says "Remember. Don't trust the one who saves you" meaning Hoffman. Corbett probably told Perez and Erickson what Amanda told her making them suspicious of Hoffman.
What I never understood is did Perez and Erickson not tell anyone else their suspicions of Hoffman? I always felt bad for that technician cause she looked like she had no idea what kind of danger she was in.
@@mtb5431 It was probably because the city's police department was corrupt and a lot of them trusted Hoffman and thought he was a good, honest cop. Him making sure that everyone in the Gideon Meatpacking Plant including John, Amanda, Jeff, Eric, Rigg and Art died and saving Corbett making them think he was a hero who stopped Jigsaw and saved an innocent little girl contributed to that so the police force never suspected he was the new Jigsaw until Jill told Gibson. Hoffman is alive. In the saw franchise, unless you see a body, they’re alive.
well, it is established that even if you do see a body they might still be alive

I'm clearly joking btw
100%. They would hype everyone up so much if they brought Hoffman back
Here's my prediction.

Just imagine if hoffman had 5-10 more years of experience he would be a Prime Kramer villain. Unstoppable like John always 2 steps ahead of his plans.
John would give you a chance. Hoffman may not.
Hoffman had both the brains and the brawn. He also had a lot of the resources left over from John. The only thing John had over him was experience, which he partly passed on, and planning. Hoffman couldn’t plan as well, and missed that John was always at least one step ahead.
Everybody wanted this one. Prolly most anticipated history to date

So he literally gambits his wife?
John risked people multiple times.

Dead Meat has you covered! Turns out, in the police station, he killed 6 people. The five kills was actually from another location he killed remotely. So at that particular time, 11 kills were confirmed: 6 he killed himself while the other 5 were from remotely
He was an amazing character, but im actually pretty okey with him dying there. As John said, he was way too confident (megalomania) and went untested for too long

I don’t believe it….. there’s no way you were born in 1997?!? You look much older
I think that when John said "no emotions" he was talking about not making the traps inescapable more then choosing the victims for personal means
Right, being emotionally involved would refer to exacting justice on those you think deserve it, rather than letting it play out naturally
Hoffman having to come up with his own escape in the RBT is why he is one of my favorite parts and it justifies his killing of Jill tuck since at that point she ruined Jigsaw by also performing essentially murder
Saw 6's slaughter of the fbi agents is one of the most beautifully executed things ever

Amanda in particular is literally given the wrong information Allison was with the key in the acid and Troy in the classroom trap.

@@darthmeticulous6901 If he thought that far ahead maybe. He still needs to open the door.

He's intelligent and relentless and he'll do anything and everything to survive and get what he wants.

Literally SAME! I was that age and could not distinguish between the two, now that I'm older it's easy
Excellent synopsis! You clearly have given this convoluted plot more thought than its writers did. Well-done!
I think John only flaw was leaving Jill exposed and eventually getting killed by Hoffman. Great video Sir!!!

Fr
I don't remember the details right now, but if Hoffman's chain in the bathroom is secured with a padlock, he could easily open it by hitting it from above, close to the latch, with enough force from any other item around, possibly even his hands. He wouldn't even need to break his own foot or cut himself to escape (also, rewatching the first Saw movie with this in mind was kinda funny). Given how strong he is, I truly hope we haven't seen the last of him. Having him and Gordon go head-to-head or even working together in a future movie would be so epic 👌
