I've been to the Nixon Library and have read many of his books. May I recommend to you "No More Vietnams" by Richard Nixon. Actually, any book by RN is worth reading, especially his memoirs. A very tough, informed, and intelligent man. Clinton called on Nixon often during his presidency for counsel. Often!

Agree or disagree with his politics - and remember that he was in reality very progressive - Nixon was brilliant, and would have gone down as one of the greatest world leaders ever had he not by his own admission screwed it up with Watergate. As former President Nixon gives a speech to Oxford Students, crowds outside chant "We want Nixon's head" and other "delightful" slogans. It is interesting to note how mesmerizing a speaker he was as well as coming across as very warm, funny as well as brilliant. Never one to shy away from controversy, President Nixon answers questions from the audience and takes on Foreign policy issues as well as discussing Watergate. In my opinion, we have not had another President of this stature since. As an interesting parallel to the current Administration, it is amazing that a President can accomplish anything when the restless throngs will not let them do the job for which they were elected.

When some 40 of his former associates and White House aides had to go to jail because of Watergate and because of their association with Nixon and his administration, Nixon himself didn't have to spend a second in jail for all the Watergate crimes he or he may have committed..

It brings tears to mine realizing how America doesn’t really exist anymore. This attitude towards freedom and democracy no longer exists in Nixon’s party, while the Democrats only pander to social liberal issues. One is fascistic, one is basically a joke. The young people inside the hall are to be commended for their legitimate inquiries. President Nixon, demonstrated a command of issues and justification of decisions above that of any contemporary political figure - then and today.
He was the first president I ever saw give a press conference and even as a kid I remember being very impressed with him and hung on his every word. He was mistreated by the media and others which is unfortunate because there is no question this man had the United States best interests at heart.

At least with respect to diplomacy and foreign relations, he is the finest mind - the finest president - we’ve ever had. He had a clear vision for what he wanted to achieve and had the right people to help him carry it out. He and Kissinger made a formidable team. The ripples from the breakthrough to China will be felt one hundred years from now and after that. Nixon saw world affairs like a chessboard, anticipating the opponent’s move four moves in advance. He could have holed himself up in his house after quitting. But he didn’t. He still had something to offer.

I thought it took a lot of courage for Nixon to attend this and other public events. As I listened to the presentation and the question and answer session, I thought to myself, this was a brilliant man who had an incredible amount of wisdom and insight to offer. Which brings me to the elephant in the room, Watergate. I am not saying Watergate was Nixon's finest hour. But, was it worth having a man of this stature forced to resign, in my opinion, I don't think so. Others committed far worse offenses and remained in office. Look at all the egregious acts Obama was responsible for, he has gotten off Scott free. Bill Clinton was impeached and finished his term in office. The fact that Nixon was a Republican, his fellow Republicans didn't support him, and he had a contentious relationship with the media, all played a significant role in Nixon's inability to survive Watergate. Had Watergate hadn't happened, I believe Nixon would have been considered one of our finest presidents.

But that’s my opinion - the fact is Iran Contra was far more serious. But Reagan had the biggest economic boom going in postwar history and an incredibly high popularity rating (thought irony prevails - Nixon had a higher favorability rating before Watergate blew up, and had just won the largest landslide victory in Presidential Electoral history). More importantly is Reagan had the party in lockstep with the Administration. 1986-87 was a FAR different political atmosphere than 1973-74. The conservative movement had swept the Republican Party; Reagan was the reason why and the leader of the revolution. Add in President George H. W. Bush working with his attorney general William Barr (irony!) on pardons, and no one went to prison for Iran Contra...NO ONE REMEMBERS IT. President Clinton broke the law - this isn’t debatable, the man lost his license to practice law for lying while under oath. No, I don’t think Clinton should have faced impeachment, but let’s be intellectually honest here: Bill Clinton was guilty of what is a serious crime as a President - lying about anything under oath. President Trump’s phone calls and ridiculous and frankly stupid actions around this Ukraine phone call and Giuliani sent in to investigate a man who never had a chance to even be a political foe is truly a bafflingly stupid strategy from this Administration. But Trump did NOT break any laws. Was it worse than Watergate? Again I’d argue perhaps it was - but it was definitely a politically-driven attempt to oust a man the opposition hates in a manner we haven’t seen since Nixon. Say what one will but President Nixon was a brilliant man and never shied away from the political discussion till the day he died. I have a lot of respect for the man. I don't particularly affiliate myself with many of his policies and ideas but I certainly think it was momentous waste of talent and political acumen for his Presidency to end in such a way. He was the right man for the times. I enjoyed hearing his profound words in 30:34. President Nixon will go down in history as one of the greatest American Presidents of the 20th century. Some of his accomplishments include his oversight of the first Moon landing in 1969, the end of the Vietnam War, the US airlift to Israel during the 1973 Yom Kippur War and which turned the tide of the war, the Détente with the Soviet Union, and normalization of relations with China.

I didn't know much about Nixon except all the headline stuff, but getting more information about him, what stands out to me is what a skilled politician he was. He was very adept at navigating the very complex political system and issues of his time. He was somebody who you would want on your side.

I've been to the Nixon Library and have read many of his books. May I recommend to you "No More Vietnams" by Richard Nixon. Actually, any book by RN is worth reading, especially his memoirs. A very tough, informed, and intelligent man. Clinton called on Nixon often during his presidency for counsel. Often!

As former President Nixon gives a speech to Oxford Students, crowds outside chant "We want Nixon's head" and other "delightful" slogans. It is interesting to note how mesmerizing a speaker he was as well as coming across as very warm, funny as well as brilliant. Never one to shy away from controversy, President Nixon answers questions from the audience and takes on Foreign policy issues as well as discussing Watergate. In my opinion, we have not had another President of this stature since. As an interesting parallel to the current Administration, it is amazing that a President can accomplish anything when the restless throngs will not let them do the job for which they were elected.

When some 40 of his former associates and White House aides had to go to jail because of Watergate and because of their association with Nixon and his administration, Nixon himself didn't have to spend a second in jail for all the Watergate crimes he or he may have committed..

After watching this I'm struck at the tremendous intellect of Nixon what a brilliant mind he had and how right he was on so many things.

A most candid exchange from a brilliant person who occupied significant positions of influence. Such an event is rarely seen. The young people inside the hall are to be commended for their legitimate inquiries. President Nixon, demonstrated a command of issues and justification of decisions above that of any contemporary political figure - then and today.
He was the first president I ever saw give a press conference and even as a kid I remember being very impressed with him and hung on his every word. He was mistreated by the media and others which is unfortunate because there is no question this man had the United States best interests at heart.

He had a clear vision for what he wanted to achieve and had the right people to help him carry it out. He and Kissinger made a formidable team. The ripples from the breakthrough to China will be felt one hundred years from now and after that. Nixon saw world affairs like a chessboard, anticipating the opponent’s move four moves in advance. He could have holed himself up in his house after quitting. But he didn’t. He still had something to offer.

I thought it took a lot of courage for Nixon to attend this and other public events. As I listened to the presentation and the question and answer session, I thought to myself, this was a brilliant man who had an incredible amount of wisdom and insight to offer. Which brings me to the elephant in the room, Watergate. I am not saying Watergate was Nixon's finest hour. But, was it worth having a man of this stature forced to resign, in my opinion, I don't think so. Others committed far worse offenses and remained in office. Look at all the egregious acts Obama was responsible for, he has gotten off Scott free. Bill Clinton was impeached and finished his term in office. The fact that Nixon was a Republican, his fellow Republicans didn't support him, and he had a contentious relationship with the media, all played a significant role in Nixon's inability to survive Watergate. Had Watergate hadn't happened, I believe Nixon would have been considered one of our finest presidents.

In my never very humble opinion, Presidents before and after Nixon we’re guilty of far worse than Nixon’s role in Watergate. President Reagan’s Iran Contra affair was without ANY QUESTION a far worse breach of law and a direct violation of the Congressional statue passed to prevent funding the Contras in Nicaragua. Now, I believe the Reagan Administration was absolutely right in violating said statue and laws in doing so...we truly knew that there was the threat of a communism spreading quickly up through the Mexican government as the dominoes fall, giving the Soviet Union a 2,000 mile easily overrun border as the new front of the Cold War. But that’s my opinion - the fact is Iran Contra was far more serious. But Reagan had the biggest economic boom going in postwar history and an incredibly high popularity rating (thought irony prevails - Nixon had a higher favorability rating before Watergate blew up, and had just won the largest landslide victory in Presidential Electoral history). More importantly is Reagan had the party in lockstep with the Administration. 1986-87 was a FAR different political atmosphere than 1973-74. The conservative movement had swept the Republican Party; Reagan was the reason why and the leader of the revolution. Add in President George H. W. Bush working with his attorney general William Barr (irony!) on pardons, and no one went to prison for Iran Contra...NO ONE REMEMBERS IT. President Clinton broke the law - this isn’t debatable, the man lost his license to practice law for lying while under oath. No, I don’t think Clinton should have faced impeachment, but let’s be intellectually honest here: Bill Clinton was guilty of what is a serious crime as a President - lying about anything under oath. President Trump’s phone calls and ridiculous and frankly stupid actions around this Ukraine phone call and Giuliani sent in to investigate a man who never had a chance to even be a political foe is truly a bafflingly stupid strategy from this Administration. But Trump did NOT break any laws. Was it worse than Watergate? Again I’d argue perhaps it was - but it was definitely a politically-driven attempt to oust a man the opposition hates in a manner we haven’t seen since Nixon. The bottom line is Nixon didn’t commit any crimes from the White House - list said criminal charges? And the REALITY is today there’s absolutely ZERO PROBABILITY NIXON FACES IMPEACHMENT OVEF WATERGATE OR ANY ORHER MATTER ANCILLARY TO WATERGATE THAT CAME OUT. He did a presentation of how north Vietnam were launching attacks on South Vietnam from Cambodia. McNamara wrote Pentagon Papers were in 1967, They just were released during Nixon. There's probably a technical way to extract his speech and eliminate the background chanting. I have heard it done in recorded music where it is possible to extract only the vocal, and eliminate the music. It would nice to hear it that way.

Say what one will but President Nixon was a brilliant man and never shied away from the political discussion till the day he died. I have a lot of respect for the man. I don't particularly affiliate myself with many of his policies and ideas but I certainly think it was momentous waste of talent and political acumen for his Presidency to end in such a way. Terribly unfortunate.

President Nixon's remarks on his policy towards China in 24:58 --ff. are pertinent today. Overall, he had a broad geo-political understanding of the complexities of world affairs. He was the right man for the times. I enjoyed hearing his profound words in 30:34. President Nixon will go down in history as one of the greatest American Presidents of the 20th century. Some of his accomplishments include his oversight of the first Moon landing in 1969, the end of the Vietnam War, the US airlift to Israel during the 1973 Yom Kippur War and which turned the tide of the war, the Détente with the Soviet Union, and normalization of relations with China.

This is an incredible video. You have an ex-President addressing a student body while a crowd of hecklers are doing everything they can to drown him out. There is a strange "je ne sais quoi" about it.
Interesting, I'm Mexican and "je ne sais quoi" sounds almost exactly like "yo no se que?" which is a phrase that old people in Mexico tend to use to describe something that can't be described

20 Feb 2021: Regarding Pres. Nixon's 1958 trip to Venezuela, my recollection is that he boldly stepped out out his vehicle and physically stood down protetestors, or similar. We still do not appreciate his guts, intellect, and devotion to his country. I will always revere Richard Milhaus Nixon. ~ Crawford D. Smith in Indianana.

It's interesting, watching Nixon talk about communism in my apartment in Cambodia in 2020.
I didn't know much about Nixon except all the headline stuff, but getting more information about him, what stands out to me is what a skilled politician he was. He was very adept at navigating the very complex political system and issues of his time. He was somebody who you would want on your side.
