Nixon was a political genius. He understood domestic and foreign policy to a T, talking about issues that matter with viable solutions instead of telling people what they want to hear.
He was also a very articulate speaker. He didn't need notes, cue cards or a teleprompter, he was quick on his feet with what to say.
Its a shame we don't have politicians like him anymore.

Remembering the debacle of the 1960 televised debates, Nixon resolved to never engage in another televised debate on the campaign trail for president. In the 1968 and 1972 campaigns, Nixon refused to debate his opponents. This televised forum allowed for Nixon to hold the floor and present his case without the risk of refutation from an opponent. It was very polished and allowed Nixon to flex his intellect for the audience. The theater audience was also carefully screened to weed out the possibility of protesters.
These decisions allowed for Nixon to come across as a much different man than he was portrayed in 1960 and in 1962 in the California governors race.

They burned him early in his career and Nixon viewed them as enemies from the beginning until the end. They were more than happy to fight with him. He assumed he could overcome their negative writing by being a great president. Unfortunately he was wrong, but he got very far without their support! His hubris was his strength and downfall. It’s amazing, really. Anyone who puts it in a liberal vs conservative light isn’t understanding the nuances of the press and president. Many conservative presidents, before and after Nixon, enjoyed good coverage in the press because they played nice with reporters and editors.

I don't get why the Ivy League/East Coast Liberal Establishment would despise him so much when he was a fairly progressive conservative (if that's not an oxymoron?) I can see that they would be anti-right wingers, but then why wasn't Reagan or Bush or Eisenhower hated to the same level? Was it because he was more effective that he incurred all that opposition? Or that he was the main opponent of the ECLE's darlings, the Kennedys? Or just sheer snobbery? ...Or a bit of each of these aspects?

Nixon would be the ideal president today for all the stupid crap going on in this country. A man who uses his brain over mudslinging and cheap shots. The contrast from then to now is so glaring and alarming.

God, I miss having real presidents! Not that Nixon wasn't without his great sins, but at least he had brains!! And he was the last of a now-extinct breed: a liberal Republican.

14:33 - By the way, Nixon would be called unironically a socialist for advocating this. This is much further left than the Democrats have been since the Hart/Clinton era.

Woah... if a Republican today were talking the way Nixon was talking... they'd be called a socialist! I would vote for Nixon, his ideas are great in terms of the tax breaks for businesses to train the unemployed (this is Social Democracy, essentially). We hear about Nixon in 1968 being the 'law and order' candidate, which is unappealing, but the Nixon I hear here is not like a Republican of today at all. Republicans today are too anti-government, while Nixon (like Ike) wants to use government to facilitate growth and opportunity for those who can't help themselves (without resorting to exhaustive programs). This is great. It's a shame our country has shifted so far right now that the GOP are anarcho-capitalists and the Democrats don't even touch on these Social Democratic issues anymore, at least by choice.

Sadly no politician today can get up there and actually say what they would do, what they're for and what they're against. Today it's all party talking points, buzz words and "I'm not (the other guy)" gobble-d-gook
