This was a very nice walmart and they stocked the largest selection of hunting and fishing out of all the walmarts in the area. I filmed this walmart while it was closing in 2 parts on my yt channel if you want to see what it used to look like
My daughter worked at this Walmart. The theft was a very large issue.

Yup. Everytime I used to come shop there I see the police out there. It’s sad because it was convenient for my family and I. Now I have to drive to Harbison to shop.
Wallie, I used to work Walmart and those little kiosks by TLE(tire, lube express) was supposed to be for checking in your vehicle, but TLEs never employed enough associates, so they just used those for customers to smoke while waiting for their vehicles if they didn't want to shop.
That little striped shack was supposed to be a little check-in station for the auto center. Most Walmarts I know stopped using them a year or two after they were open. They would have an attendant out there with a scanner to get your VIN and mileage and junk and ask what kind of service you needed. Think they realized pretty quickly it was rarely busy enough to justify and inefficient (and uncomfortable) to have someone manning those shacks very often.

People rob them blind and think it's ok because they are a big company then call them racist for closing.
Yep, and they O but their insurance will cover it!! yeah no!! Also I'm on the west side of the state, we had a shooting that nearly killed a little girl a few days ago at one of our Walmart stores, and we ain't putting up with that kind of crap here without a fight.
The checkered kiosk thing is basically a safety point for the employees to evacuate to in the event of an emergency where they have to evacuate the store

Good video rare to see a abandoned Walmart there’s a Walmart in homewood Illinois that closed recently that used to be a superkmart center that closed in 2013 and was one of the last Illinois superks to close.

I visited my family from MO about 7 years ago and I believe I went to that very Walmart. My family lived in Columbia for many years, but either died off, or moved away due to the crime. I remember the big mall on Decker blvd. And my step dad used to work at Kmart there for 19 years!

When Wal- Mart started closing stores, I knew we were in trouble!
A lot of Walmart stores has been closing recently due to theft and the company won’t prosecute those thieves.
Those of checks are the Problem
they will prosecute in Alabama and Florida!
Why Do People Like Breaking The Law?
It's states/areas that are more liberal, and they know the law won't do much if anything to the damn crooks, so they don't bother, in places that will, they hit them hard as they can!!

Columbia native here, that Walmart is in a bad part of town, not surprised one bit
This part of town is busy and right by the interstate, but it USED to be the suburbs. Then the area went downhill. This site used to be a Target and movie theater etc back in the day. Walmart also closed their neighborhood market not far from here. I rarely went to this location, but I was still surprised to see it close. Was it even there for 10 years?

A quick search shows the building was sold 6 months ago and is going to be converted to a computer company's warehouse and distribution center as reported by a local TV station.
At least they are going to be doing something with it thankfully.

I'm not the biggest fan of Walmart either, but when it's what you have in your area, vs. Target, and other stores that charge highway robbery with poor selection, than I'll go to Walmart!
The mall that was here, bush river mall was there for a really long time 10-20 years (or more) that I knew of. It was basically dead before it got demolished and the Walmart was built. The Walmart didn’t last anywhere near as long as the mall was there.
I’m watching this video right now and haven’t heard the mention of which abandoned Walmart this is but just from the landmarks I’m guessing it’s bush river road Walmart. I think it might have open in somewhere like 2013ish timeframe or near there, just trying to recall in my memories.

I would assume that they closed the store before the bank's lease was up. They would still have to honor that lease or the bank could pursue legal remedies.

this just hit hard to me. i shopped there with my dad in there when i was little and i learned it shut down when it first did. My father passed before it shut down but the fact i grew up there is just sad…

I live maybe 10 minutes from this location. I never actually shopped here, but I was shocked to see this abandoned Walmart while I was door dashing. Now ill explore it later.

A company out of Texas has bought the Walmart and will turning into a computer storage and recycling center. I see work trucks out there from time to time but not much is going on. I am starting to wonder if that company has changed its mind. The property was rezoned for this company to come in.
This Wal-Mart closed due to high rates of theft by both the public AND employees. They also has problems with loss prevention not showing up to court to prosecute shoplifters.
This appears to be the Bush River Rd Walmart. When it was originally built, the area was in an “okay” state, but it was simply bad timing. Over the course of several years, that area declined, and it just became a bad place to go. Interestingly, it was possibly the last Walmart built in the Columbia-Lexington area and the first one to close. It got pretty bad in a short period of time. Our oldest daughter lived in a condo complex that was right behind that Walmart, but she had to move because the area was becoming unfriendly.
I’m a Columbia native, though I haven’t lived there since my youth. I recall, years ago, when there was so much concern for the proliferation of new Wallmarts (RIP) & it’s effects on legacy mom & pop stores; that’s the circle of (retail) life, eh? Today, we’re nostalgic for those same small-business eating Wallmarts, no longer the apex predators. Amazon, w/a market cap over three times that of Wallmart, now sits at the top of the retail food chain. Where I live (Beijing), the players are different, but the process is identical.

When we moved to Columbia from GA in 2008 (a few miles away from this Walmart) we shopped here exclusively and simply tolerated the increased presence of "seedy" clientele here. But soon they went from 24-7 to closing at 11pm; then they closed the pharmacy entrance at 9pm or 10pm to only allow entry and exit from the grocery side. We were disappointed to see this store's decline and subsequent closing, because it was better than where we have to go now, at the Harbison Walmart in Irmo. Traffic is sucky. The managers and Walmart execs responsible for the Bush River Walmart that closed are ultimately to blame for allowing this customer AND employee theft! But they may have simply given up on efforts due to the eventual closing of the I-126 exits to and from Bush River Rd because of the USDOT Carolina Crossroads $9 Billlion revamp of "malfunction junction." The construction over the next 10 years is going to reek havoc on that whole area. However current the Murphy USA gas station has the best prices in the city and a new UPS store opened up in the front corner!

I'm not a fan of Walmart, attracts the lowest common denominator. I am becoming less of a fan of Target, neither seems to have products that I am used to purchasing. Since I live rurally without a vehicle I purchase most of what I need either online or, in most cases, on apps on my Android mobile phone.
While it is pouring down south, it has been clear and very sunny, and it is going to get even warmer towards the end of the week! Nice video!

Born & raised in Columbia SC. This was my last job I worked before I moved to Atlanta GA in 2016. I worked at this Wal-Mart like a month. Took my last check, and hauled azz out of SC to Atlanta. Best decision Ever. SC is DEAD ASF

That checkered kiosk is where workers would stand for vehicles entering the auto care center to take their work order. They don't use those anymore though as they have an appointment based it now

Walmart is far from going under though. They actually increased their profits last year closing these unprofitable stores. Every company does this at some point. You gotta get rid of the bad stores every now and then.

Walmart closes one side like that when theft is very high so at night they can better control the flow of customers to prevent some theft. Its probably why this one closed honestly. I moved to columbia about 2 years ago now and there is a Neighborhood Market here that closed because the theft was so high there too
In Greensboro, North Carolina there was once Carolina Circle Mall. It closed down in the early 2000's. It was just of U. S. Highway 29. Back in 2005, it was demolished and a Walmart was put in it's place.
Had to crack up on this one: Seeing it on the Tubage here and the very first ad was one for Walmart. PFFF!!!

Do you think anyone would care if people camped in they're car at this abandoned location? I was thinking in the parking lot really far from the store. The checker box stand was for the automotive attendant. I dont think they use them anymore at the stores.

i live in cola and reason why it closed is because nobody went there.... i lived here 35yrs and never shopped there. I even forgot it was there! We have 4 other stores everybody goes to...too many if u ask me
I use to work there. Its in a rough area and the managers were really rough also.

UPDATE: this location is now being used by a large electronics recycling company. About 65k sq ft of the 203k total is still available for lease.
Also wallie b there used to be a fuddruckers right up the road but it has since then turned into a church but you could maybe film it next time just to see the changes

Thanks to Google Maps the right side was the grocery section, the middle section was the home, and the section with the fences was the garden section.
If this walmart is off bush river road it was closed due to location and less customer, it was too big for that area, there is another walmart on harbison blvd

The funny thing is my sister and I live in the southeast part of pa we live in Chester County right on the border of Chester County and my sisters kids went to coatesville area school district and both coatesville area school district and pine richland are good in football there's been a few times coatesville area school district and pine richland school district have come close to playing each other in the football playoffs up in Hershey pa

You're only an hour and a half away from Charlotte North Carolina. I do have a South Carolina address though, ever heard of a city called Rock Hill South Carolina? We're only 20 minutes south from Charlotte.

My ex husband was working there temporarily as a security guard as it was going out of business in 2021 it was a mess in there lol.
Pretty sad my peoples got the way they are has grown so bad that they have to shut stores down. I used to love to be able to go to Walmart at 2 in the morning or whenever I needed to still glad we have the one we have and I live in a small town if it would leave it would devastate this town we're like 35,000 people I lived here for 23 years saw the old-fashioned Walmart call us before it had grocery stores. Them open a new store with everything you could possibly Ever Need. It's been there about 20 years now. I can't imagine if you're close to here Lottery Diaries live in this town and they wouldn't be able to make it at all. That's what you get when you start out with a government-created pandemic. Followed up by the government's new woke program. And people that would rather steal than work. Thanks for the video
