Ok I bought I and I highly HIGHLY recommend it. Alex solos are all interesting conceptually, and yes very melodic!!! The tool itself is brilliant. Gonna spend some time on it all summer. Awesome recommendation.
@@Saxologic I'm so interested on buying it but, could you tell me which will be a better purchase? Your mouthpiece or a Selmer/Yamaha mouthpiece? I have so spend my money and I really need an advice
Enclosures, digital patterns, notes to resolve on, diminished chords used in voice leading, and so on. Lots of great stuff to shed here. Enough for the rest of the year for sure. Today was my first real day of enclosure practice 1 below, 1 above, 1/2 step below, then chord tone. Feels like a powerful tool to add to the tool belt! Thanks!
Over a year ago Alex Hann came and was a guest and played with a group i was in the EPYJ and man. When he started shredding it was one of the most insane things. I remember he started played his soprano and playing a shaker at the same time. It was wild and so damn impressive. Truly set the bar. He was not only a insane musician but also a great entertainer. Really got everyone into his solos
Love the *lighting* and how much your videos are improving. I remember I saw you on Alex Hahn’s instagram talking about how you were his student, went crazy when I saw that.
Thanks so much for this video. I’ve always loved jazz, but I was never one for theory. This type of analysis really helps me understand melodic progressions and licks from this genre. I love your content, keep it going! -a classical trumpetist
What I learned is that if I can just play up or down the chord tones, starting NOT on the root, and resolving when I get to the next chord, it will always sound right. Also learned how good the diminished arpeggios sound on the dominant chords.
Your content just keeps getting better, Nathan! Thank you these walkthrough videos, I love how you really break it down - it’s almost like I can play the piece before even getting to my horn.
I believe I commented this on another of your videos, but did you go to ECU and play at a jazz camp at UNCP several years ago? If so I think we played together!
i absolutely love these videos Nathan! My favourite videos are where you go through a tune and analyse it phrase by phrase whilst playing. Super interesting and super engaging. I aspire to be able to look at a piece and be able to pick it apart like you can, as well as play them of course.
Honesty the couple of times I've got to hear and play with Alex were insane and it's great to see you collaberate and learn from such a monster in the jazz industry.
Nice video, good analysis and what I especially enjoy is the sound you get from this mouthpiece. Really seems to work for you to get a nice jazzy tone. Congrats on all of the above
Omg it’s crazy how Alex Hahn is Actually my ex middle school band directors son Mr.Hahn.Its currently my second year at Eldo where Alex actually graduated from.I remember how every year he would come and play with our jazz bands.Great video btw.
alex hahn's dad was my middle school band teacher, and in high school my jazz band got to be adjudicated by alex hahn at a jazz festival! he had some great tips for our saxes, and it was a super fun experience!
That final lick you love so much works so nicely because a G#alt7 is implied, as that lovely concluding enclosure outlines the #9 b9 and b7 of the G# altered scale :)
I actually worked with Alex Hahn. He came in to teach the LA All-City Jazz Ensemble. He taught us how to learn a piece by ear. Specifically "Soneymoon for Two".
Where I'm at is, 'Who cares if a note is a 5th or 7th?' Saxophones do not play chords. Saxophones play one note at a time. They can arpeggiate chords but one note at a time. I did learn the idea of enclosure in this video. So Thank You.
Saxologic I certainly wouldn’t say so. That was his first year and my last. Just the 8 o’clock. It is fun to see people you know grow. I barely made it through the program, myself.
@10:19 sounds like a quote from stan getz/ eddie sauter - 'Her' from focus. i think its in the second half. also heard in Vincent Gallo's film, Buffalo 66

Any tips on a up coming saxophone player? Im half blind and love the sax dude i been playing for almost 2 years. I was wondering if i could take some lessons so i could work on my jazz playing.
