I have a long story about Coy Hill. Alabama ABC has an annual sweepstakes for allocated spirits. If you aren't chosen as one of the 100 people to get a ticket for a given store, you can line up to be part of the second 100, and you get to go in later, after the first 100 have gone through and made their purchases (there are bottle limits with different bottles in different categories; it's a bit complicated). This year I was number 39 in the walk-up line. The very nice gentleman in front of me, #38, was only there for the Jack Daniels products, it's what he collects and it's what he's into. He has over decades built relationships with store managers, etc. The JD rep was on site and recognized him, and came out and talked to him for a while. He was looking to get the Jack 10 year, but really wanted that Coy Hill. He and I got there around 5 am and got to go into the store at 11:30 am. Just before we got to go in both the Jack 10 and Coy Hill sold out. I felt so bad for him. He did buy a bottle of Blanton's (hard to pass up Blanton's at retail, even if it's not your thing), but otherwise left empty-handed. And I don't know, but I can't imagine all the people who bought that Coy Hill cared even half as much about trying that whiskey as he did.
That's bullshit! I too am a JD fanboy. I buy all their products, except the college girl shit, all year 'round. JD makes these releases for people like me and #38 as an annual thank you to their loyal customers. I always register my limited edition purchases with them, I just wish there was a way we could get dibs. I hope they rework the laws to let distilleries, not sell but, facilitate purchases through retailers. Not an original sentiment for me to cry about hoarders and flippers so I'll just leave it.
As a True Whiskey Lover, I feel as if your channel doesn't get enough views/credit as it deserves!! Definitely underrated for all of the quantity/quality of video's!! Keep doing God's Work Fellas.. Cheers!!
This was a great episode. I think you all exposed the strengths and weaknesses of JD Coy Hill. I look at them as character flaws. In a fictional story, you can't have a great character without a character flaw. I liked Dillon's "raw" analogy. I put it this way... Coy Hill is punk rock. Don't come to a punk rock concert expecting a symphony. What JDCH lacks in refinement, it makes up for in pure electric power. Honestly, there is so much flavor there, I think the volume of flavor overcomes the proof. It is my bourbon of the year. I have had 3 different barrels (2 at bars, one I had purchased). While they are not all the same, the discussion you had applies broadly to all of the barrels I have had. If Dillon is looking for one specific flavor... well, maybe one of those barrels had it and the others didn't. As to availability... welcome to the world of bourbon. And it's not changing any time soon. I have a group of friends who get together on an annual basis. 3 years ago, there were three of us who would drink bourbon. Then 5. We got together this weekend and all 15 were drinking bourbon. There is a bourbon boom. That is going to make it less available. Don't blame the distillers for that. Unfortunately, this was hyped well ahead of release. Everybody knew about it and everybody wanted it.
Dillon's analogy made me think more of a hard hat tour. The house isn't finished yet, but you can see all the bones and what they're going for, but the developer/builders haven't completed all the finishes.
Disqualified or not, it's a joy to watch you all break down a spirit. Love this channel! Maybe you could have an *asterisks* division where you record S.B. scores when appropriate, just for comparison's sake. Either way great episode, cheers!
Ok I thought I was losing my mind.. noticed the single barrel in the beginning and was shocked you guys are still moving forward LOL Great episode anyways! Love the breakdown
I personally do not like very high proof and passed on buying this at MSRP at a local store. I like enjoying my bourbon, not surviving it. Just my thoughts.
I assumed you guys were just making an exception for this single barrel, so I went along with glee. How did you only notice until minute 20?! Justice for Coy Hill! It deserves to be entered!
Water, water, water guys!! This held up so well to dilution which tamps down that ethanol heat. I eventually had close to .5 oz of water to a 1.5 oz sample. So rich, so velvety, so good!
Fitting conclusion to one of the highest proof bourbons on the market. Speaking of high proof, I know you guys aren’t Jim Beam fans, but I propose OGD 114 for the ultimate spirits competition. Tried it for the first time a few weeks ago and I was shocked at how delicious it was. Thanks for all you guys do. Been a fan since the Bourbon Guild
Just to react to Dillon's comment on the "Utility of this Review" maybe I'm in the minority here but, living where I live, these limited bottles are basically unobtanium. But I am a whiskey fan/nerd, so hearing you guys taste some of these chase bottles lets me live a little vicariously through you guys, and that's pretty darn entertaining and a great service.
i am one of those MUTED nose who LOVE cask strength whiskies - - the only thing I dilute these ultra high ABV is with a younger whisky of the SAME line (ex: 47% single barrel of JD ...).
As usual, never saw a bottle of this stuff in the wild, but my Friend did send me a small sample. The analogy I would use would be a great Puncher, but not a great Boxer. It has amazing flavor notes, despite the proof, but this expression isn't very sophisticated. I realize JD doesn't have infinite barrels of this juice to play around with, but I wonder if a batch proof version of a couple of dozen barrels would have given better integration of flavors, while sacrificing only a little of the spikiness from the SB.
I got one from each rickhouse. Got a call from a store (big box) both drops. I was playing it cool while my guy was telling taters that it didn't show up.
I tried this and I agree that it is *not* a honey barrel by any stretch of the imagination. I’m calling BS on the community saying that they sip this and “love it”. This thing is rough, harsh and unrefined. Probably great for Dillon for not for the faint of heart. Cheers.
Why don't you rate some single barrels? You can find plenty of them like some Signatory Vintage or Privateer (rum from Ipswich, Massachusetts). It would be interesting to have your thoughts one some. I drink mostly rums but have a taste to whisky too. Maybe once a review on a Caroni Velier rum.... or a Karuizawa whisky..... ? (money money money) :D
Huge fan of this I did a review on my channel. However I will say it was the most difficult hunt I’ve ever had to do to score a bottle. And half the people in line were just there to flip it on secondary. Really sad because others really wanted to drink it
I don't have much useful to add ---- other than I was interested in what you guys thought. This episode did just that --- disqualified or not. I am a big fan of Select Barrell Proof --- and I wanted to see what you guys thought. Good job. Take care
im trying to remember if there was much else besides Bookers (readily available to me anyway) that was higher proof Cask Strength when i started drinking bourbons 7-8 years ago? I cant think of anything else i had then that was even over 112 proof. I personally really like the trend of more proof choices as i do like the flavors better most of the time with CS stuff.
Another very entertaining episode! I’m fairly new to whiskey. How does it being Single Barrel disqualify it? I guess I’m not sure exactly what Single Barrel means.
Single barrel means whiskey from one barrel. We don't allow them in the spirits competition because there is sometimes a lot of variation bottle to bottle.
@@CuriosityPublic Thanks! When something says Single Barrel, does that mean they only release one barrel of that? Or do they release many different barrels, each possibly being slightly different but under the same label?
I totally disagree with you guys about the value. This is a great value at $65/bottle considering the amount of undiluted alcohol for the money. Difficulty in acquiring it should not be a factor to determine value. Dillon's difficulty experience in getting this bottle is what most of us go thru with most of all the higher end whiskeys. Buy for most of us this would be a min of triple the price.
Wait I thought u guys did basic single barrels where they are all single barrels. Like a blantons. No? Hilarious 😂 I think like all michters are single barrel. They will never be in the USC?
Honey Barrel is NOT a barrel that tastes like honey. It is a rare, perfect barrel that age, wood and spirit have combined to make an exceptionally good whisky. It’s that 1 in 1000 or 1 in 10000 exceptional cask. If it has honey flavors or not is irrelevant.
This is absolutely incorrect. Honey Barrels literally have a taste of honey. Stop spreading corporate marketing BS, saying that everything "good" is "honey". The reason the term came to be and why it's always been associated with Fitzerald and Van Winkle was because of the wheated mashbill barrels that were handpicked with nuance of honey coming out of stitzel weller distillery. The entire reason for Pappy Van Winkle insanity is exactly this term "honey" and the flavor associated with it. Folks who have had the very old 15 year Pappy out of the stitzel know EXACTLY what this means. I would argue in most of the new "Pappy" from buffalo lack that nuanced flavor and probably why people can get away with selling this rewritten history. But guess what, if only a few hundred barrels out of a 2.5 million barrels produced per year has "honey" (not the 1 in 1000 that you speak of - are you kidding me?), how can you sell your shitty brand to the public? Well, get Shanken and Cowdery (who are in bourbon marketing's pocket) to put out an article on Whiskey Advocate saying that "we don't know if it really exists" and whiskytube morons following suit by saying "there are honey barrels EVERYWHERE!" . Well, if they change the phrase to mean any damn barrel coming out of any damn distillery, of course you can call any bottle the "honey barrel" and sell it to the idiots buying up the hype with no flavor. Magnus came out with sourced "honey barrel" blend that taste like shit and I can see why whiskeytube echo chamber buys into this crap. TLDR; Honey barrels literally taste like honey. But now, since marketing took over, honey means anything whiskeytube and Shanken and co wants it to be. Give me a f-ing break.
Low points on value isnt fair. You say its worth it @ its msrp but why ding it because some people/places price it @ 400-500. Its phenomenal for the msrp....should be 5/5. Maybe say value is 5/5 but @ secondary its a 0/5. Just a thought 😬
Lol Dylan cracks me up. In his world honey barrel doesn't refer to the best and special barrel in the warehouse, but a barrel that literally tastes like honey. 🤷♂️😆
What are you talking about, man. Honey barrels were associated with stitzel weller honey barrels that literally had the nuance of honey. This is why Pappy rose to fame. Now everyone thinks any shitty barrel from any distillery is "honey". Give me a break.
Don’t know if you know that your number one pick Tears of la llorona is a single barrel. Each Tequila bottle has a symbol on the neck of the bottle which represents what barrel its from. So technically it is also disqualified. Just saying. Love your guys channel,, very cool
Tears is a batched product, not a single barrel! Even a small batch product will produce a much larger number of bottles for the consumer versus a single barrel product. Cheers!
The taste off for patron members only? Give me a break. You just lost me fellers, there are plenty of other reviewers to watch - you just made life easier.

Dutch read the single barrel number at the beginning of the episode! LOL
Really curious where Dillon's idea that a honey barrel is one that has a taste of honey came from
These were crazy hyped/allocated in the CT/RI area too, these for whatever reason were in a lot of pappy raffles near me
Loved the episode! Great laughs!
