To be entirely fair, if I had the space, time, and money, I would absolutely take up gem cutting as a hobby just to sate my desire to own loads of random sparkly gemstones. They can be synthetic or alternatives to the more uncommon or difficult to process stones, but I find large cut gemstones to be utterly beautiful and fascinating. The interplay of light and color through the addition of faceting is humanity's contribution to the splendor of nature.

However, I can tear down and rebuild half my motorcycle in a day and without searching for a single tool..... It's a very interesting lesson in shop function.

I'm glad he is enjoying them, cause personally I don't really like gemstones. For one they're not actually all that rare, distributors restrict the supply to keep their prices artificially high. And even if they were rare, today we have the technology to grow real diamonds anyway.
And they're pretty much worthless. If you need any evidence of this, simply look at the re-sale market: it's non-existent. Jewelry stores will not buy back your used jewelry, and even if they do you'll be lucky to get 1/10th of what you paid for it. The only people out there who will buy used jewelry are pawn shops and cash-for-gold places. Even the largest/rarest gemstones in the world that are "priceless", like the ones in museums like Adam was talking about at the beginning of the video, are pretty much worthless too. Just like the "priceless" Mona Lisa, if nobody's willing to actually pay whatever ridiculous price you think it's worth, then it's not actually "worth" that price. (Look up stories of real Ocean's 11-style museum heists. Even the successful thieves who made off with a museum's most "valuable" paintings always got caught later while trying to ransom the paintings back to museum, cause they couldn't find anybody else to buy them. They're literally "priceless", in the bad way.)
Then factor in the horrible market behind it: "conflict diamonds" gathered by slaves, gem mines that are practically 1-step away from slavery, and the jewelry distribution stores who knowingly manipulate the market to keep prices high, and knowingly sell you crap that they know is practically worthless. All this together, to me, makes real gemstones seem to be superficial, hollow, shallow crap for superficial, hollow, shallow people.
I actually like cubic zirconium better than real diamonds for all those reasons. It's like an F.U. to the whole gemstone market: "Look at what I can do, I can do literally everything you can (look pretty) without any of that B.S. that comes with being a 'real' diamond."

When ADAM was talking about his collection of stones and getting into it like it was real it made me think about how real it REALLY IS!!!
About 5 years ago I was helping a friends son build some lego set and I had COMPLETELY FORGOT HOW ABSOLUTELY AMAZING IT WAS TO BUILD/CREATE THINGS & BE TAKEN AWAY INTO ANOTHER WORLD LIKE A YOUNG CHILD (But I’m 44years old!!!)!!!
I guess I had forgotten how great it was & IS to IMAGINE!!!
I can see people saying that it’s ridiculous or a COMPLETE WASTE OF ONES TIME & EVEN LIFE!
I WOULD HAVE TO SAY TO THAT I FEEL SORRY FOR THEM!!!
I WAS SO EXCITED TO FIND MY CHILDHOOD IMAGINATION and ABILITIES IN TACT!!!
Since I am older now I can say from experience that the Childish WONDER, & FEELINGs are the SAME FEELINGS I would feel say if I was an ARCHEOLOGICAL DIG EXPERT AND EXPOSED SOME RARE EGYPTIAN ARTIFACTS!!!
SO!, THOSE AMAZING FEELINGS THAT FLOOD THE BODY WHEN SAY ADAM IS HOLDING THOSE STONES, or you DISCOVER SOME AMAZING TECHNIQUES IN LEGO, or ARE USING A ROCK TUMBLER TO shine stones to look like some RARE STONES YOU FOUND BY THE NILE RIVER or SOMETHING…
I AM SAYING THAT THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS THAT WOULD BE A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EVENT TO EXPERIENCE BUT WILL ONLY BE ABLE TO BE FELT BY THE VERY FEW INDIVIDUALS THAT ACTUALLY GET TO BE IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME, DURING THE RIGHT TIME PERIOD!!!
So, just using our BRAINS we can almost literally experience anything from anytime throughout history!!!
Not just some quick passing feeling but an actual experience we can USE and FULLY EMBRACE TO BETTER OUR LIVES!!!
So, if you find yourself involved in something you may think is CHILDISH Maybe you should allow yourself to just FULLY EMBRACE THIS & SEE WHAT KIND OF POSSIBILITIES OPEN TO YOU &
How NEWLY GAINED PERSPECTIVES LEND THEMSELVES TO YOU FOR ALL KINDS OF THINGS REALLY OPENING UP YOUR CREATIVE, IMAGINATIVE, & OTHER MENTAL PROCESSES along with TONS OF other THINGS!!!
    I hope this MAKES SENSE!!!
It’s a little difficult to explain but I just hope people can experience AT LEAST SOME OF the AMAZING THINGS OUR BRAINs are CAPABLE OF AND THE WAYS IN WHICH IT CAN HELP ENRICH OUR LIVES & EVEN LEAD US DOWN MANY DIFFERENT INCREDIBLE PATHS!!!
So it really doesn’t make a difference if you are 1 or
100years old so remember you are always YOU!!!
    Or
What you may have thought was long gone is still as ALIVE an VIBRANT as when you were 7 years old!!!
I will stop now before I go down a RABBIT HOLE I’ll never get MYSELF back out of!!!

Never too old, my friend! 55 yrs old, minutes from the beaches of Lake Michigan--it's called beachcombing or rock hunting/hounding. Many pretty, sparkly( fossils), beach glass. So far no real diamonds(they ARE out there though), nor items as famous as Adam's collection. but FEELS like LOTR "Precious" holding one in your hand! I use the same plastic storage containers until I'm able to upgrade.

One thing I appreciate about watching Adam work is how much he leaves in, so many creators cut the hum and haw of a project. Some times I find it tedious when he goes over things in such detail but this is as much a part of the process any step! I love seeing Adam, a qualified expert in his field, think out loud in exactly the same ways I would when working on a project.

Hi, Adam. I understand the "little boy" fascination with gemstones. As a girl, I used to collect agate fragments from the piles of gravel the county would put on the unpaved lane when went by our farm in the hills of Tennessee. Now, I have a fair sized collection of raw and polished semi-precious stones and I love them. I also collect coins and many other items of interest to me.
For the gem case, I would take two 12"x12", 2" deep shadow boxes and hinge them together on one side; putting a double handle on the opposite side as well as a latch to close the two boxes up facing each other. I would "distress" them to make them look like antiques. I would also alter them so that the "backs" of the boxes are also hinged to open down flat, but with catches to hold them in place when they are in their upright positions. I'd glue velvet to the inside surface of the shadow box backs and mount the gems on the velvet with removable tacky glue. Then, when you want to display them, just unlatch the backs/outside pieces and lay them both down flat. The shadow box glass inserts would keep the stones free from dust when the box is closed. The whole box would also be openable in the center and would display the gems through the glass inserts. BTW, you can find El Corazon replicas all over the internet. Happy building!

i realize i'm quite late to the party on this one, but i'm glad i finally ran across it - sad that it took me so long to see it, considering how long i've been enjoying your content. i've been planning a project myself for quite some time that will involve much the same stuff, which i think you might enjoy as a thought puzzle. since i have yet to see text-accurate renditions of the silmarils or the arkenstone, i'm going to fabricate my own out of resin, at least as closely as i can get them without them having their own internal light source - that's where the box will come into play, with concealed leds embedded below each gem. the box will otherwise be pretty simple, recesses sculpted to fit each gem out of modeling foam, lined with velvet similarly to what you've done, but with a acrylic top & somewhat hidden light activation buttons (2 different boxes - 1 for the arkenstone, 1 for the silmarils). it's ambitious, but should be a fun project & i have plenty of time since retirement. since you're one of the few who is likely to appreciate such a project, i figured i'd share. keep up the great work!

I absolutely love this channel, and have watched every single One Day Build. Adam cracks me up, and teaches me a lot. It's a true joy watching him work.
Also, I will never understand why, after being given an amazing woodworking bench, Adam didn't cut a new piece of leather to fit the new (larger) surface area. Now, he's got dings, dirt, and droplets on that outermost edge while what's been covered remains clean. It's driving me crazy! Ha ha ha!
