My favourite part of open water swim is the peace and I don’t have to stop to turn around. It’s so nice to swim in a clean lake and see the fish and fona.
Great video Matt 👍. I haven’t ever really used any goggles other than ‘open water’ goggles, the ones that are a lot bigger than pool goggles as I find it weird when goggles sit in my eye sockets. I tend to just use a new set for a race to prevent fogging issues. What I like about open water swimming - it usually means that it’s summer or that I’m racing :)
Open water swimming... terrifying. I do like the wider field of view for sure on those. I just bought a new pair of Tyr to replace my chlorine mangled Speedos.. and the Tyr leak already which was super disappointing. The hunt continues. Your goggle series is well timed for me as I hunt for the affordable workhorse swim specs. Good review as always - appreciate the honesty and non-partisan opinion.

What I like about open water swimming is that it scares the hell out of me LOL my first pair of R1s were awesome however they were run over in T 2 at a sprint triathlon. I now go between a new pair of R1 and a pair of speedo pool race goggles. The visibility of the R1 is just superior in every way. I also experienced leaking in the upper corner between my eye and my nose almost every other session. I have to play and get the goggles just right in order to avoid that leak. I never had this trouble with the speedo because they are smaller and suck to the eyeball instead of the socket. as for the anti-fog I learned that you can just literally never touch the inside surface of the goggles with your fingers or a towel and it will remain. This takes discipline and I ruined my first pair by trying to clean a smudge and inadvertently I just ripped the anti-fog off the inside of them. With some attention the new pair is still going strong with anti-fog after about two months.

My first ows was in the warmup right before a race, which was a genius move, but it’s the only option I had. Got swallowed up in the mass start and ended up spit out the back. Since I was already out the back, I had a moment to pause and just look around from the middle of the lake. It was beautiful and it was also chaotic and I loved every second of it. I loved the mass of bodies spread out ahead of me in a giant v pattern. I loved the calm of the trees I could see from out in the middle of the open water. In that race, I loved getting out of the water and back to my bike the most! Second race in open water was much better. I can’t wait for the weather to warm up and get back in the lake.
Before I went with the Magic5 I was strongly considering this one! The shipping fees to Canada for Roka products is crazy so had to go another way. I'm not sad tho hehe.
So . . . I've been bringing my Magic 5s to all of the swims where I'm reviewing goggles. And I've had to switch over to the Magic5s a number of times. 👌
I love the honesty in your reviews! Keep it up! I think what I enjoy most about open water swimming is that I don't have to push off the wall every 25 meters. I just feel stopping and turning around every thirty seconds breaks my rhythm.

Great unbiased review. I like the feeling of getting in a zone while open water swimming. It feels more rhythmic without the turns and allows me to focus more technique and longer endurance swims.

Just gave my R 1 a good test 1hr 20 mins in my Endless Pool, had to stop couple of times to adjust them little higher to stop a very small leak, no flip turns in the lake or ocean or my Endless Pool. If the goggle passes the leak test with full current in my face it will pass OWS .
Matt LeGrand I use it religiously after every swim and have never had fogging issues. Good luck! Maybe you can do a spot from my mouth vs. quick spit video 🤣
Had 3 pairs of the goggles, the nose piece is really poorly made, it broke on three different pairs. Had to claim warranty until I just bought a different brand.
Alex, sorry you had a bad experience with these. Generally, Roka makes great products and tends to stand behind their stuff. You're in for the giveaway 🙄

I’ve found that my favorite open water goggles don’t do so well in the pool. What I love about open water swimming? It’s therapeutic to me.
