I'm Indonesian, and a fan of AB. This episode breaks my heart because I do not think that was the right time to discuss the heavy topic with him. You can see his faraway look while they discuss the philosophy of good and bad. He was nodding but his heavy heart was not fully in it. While I wholeheartedly love this culture, being a Javanese myself, and acknowledge its richness, I've also been diagnosed and medicated for severe depression for many years, that I can see this topic of unjust killings and deaths and good and evil, which he always explores in life and in his show, to be fair, can be either too much and too relevant to handle or simply less engaging for someone in a depressive state. If he was with his usual team, they could probably maneuver things, although it's hard to imagine you could maneuver Tony. But just, idk, make his last days on earth less heavy and less isolating. I guess this is a wishful thinking, what if this does happen, maybe he won't be too tired of life and decide to take the matter into his hands, yada yada. Miss you, Tony.
I was wondering how much later he took his life in France (if indeed it was a suicide, I'm not convinced) after this episode. I disagree with you, tj28308, I think it was a beautiful and appropriate thing that he visited Indonesia and focused on death. It was like his higher self knew that his cycle of life this time around was coming to an end, whether it was himself or somebody else. For me, Bourdain was a very sensitive poet more than anything else and I think he lived his life richly and deeply. When it was time for him to go, he went. May he rest in peace and may he be on an even more beautiful path now.
I can't help but cry when he talks about the kind of funeral he wants. Tony was a truly unique person, the kind of guy that comes along far too rarely, and though I never met him I miss him like a dear friend every time I'm reminded of him.
I imagined him angrily hanging up the hotel phone: slamming the receiver down and smashing the phone’s cradle. It rang again and he forcefully yanked the phone’s plug out of the wall. A conversation with that person was over. That conversation and the whole thing: emphatically, in all ways, over. It was a “daytime imagining,” not a sleep-time dream. I did dream of him later, and in that dream he encouraged me and advised me to do something. (I’ll keep the specific thing private.) I kept his speeches on my iPod and I listened to them in Ghana & Taiwan. They were encouragement and reminders to be grateful. I listened to his Commonwealth of California address over and over. That was years prior, though. His skillfully conveyed thoughts impacted me greatly. I miss him. All the beautiful spots where I’d have a quiet-time alone-beer or a small plate of something new, I’d think of him.
I don't know... In hindsight, anything could seem like a grim warning sign. I've had conversations like that, and they had nothing to do with plans to commit suicide.
@@billscannell93 Somebody like Anthony... Come on. The signs were definitely there years before. As someone who has lost a childhood friend to suicide, I can absolutely say that the writing was on the wall even when we were just 13. My father passed from a heroin overdose, and it surprised absolutely nobody... We was much like Anthony. A punk rock lover of food and travel and booze. Even looked like him.
@@nellkellino-miller7673 I don't think being slightly jaded about human nature or having a mildly dark sense of humor are factors that necessarily point to suicide. You are telling me Kissinger had the power and inclination back in 2015 to kill a tv host based on a passing comment? I'm not saying it isn't the case......I know nothing about Kissinger being portuguese (I had heard the name before tho). But, you REALLY believe that?
@@jeanjacqueslundi3502 henry ( real name heinz ) kissinger had tremendous power however thats not exactly what i meant by my comment, but rather that by that particular comment that bourdain said I can presume that he was both educated in what really matters and courageous enough to say real shit which makes anybody with enough power a target.

I've been to bali twice. Came away both times not liking the place. And yet i've been coming to Thailand for over 20 years and now live here for 6 months of each year. I could never really understand what it was about Bali that i found so distateful. Coming away sick both times obviously didnt help. But after watching this episode with AB its become a lot clearer to me why i will never return.
I think Bali's a fantastic place but it's become so commodified and hollowed out by tourism that it's hard to get to the root of the culture without being surrounded by scores of foreigners. I like getting drunk on the beach as much as the next person but the faux boho 'digital nomad' beach bum party scene has absolutely sucked the spiritualism out of the place. That said, I went on a cross island bike trip and managed to stay with a lot of locals - and if you know where to look, it's still an incredibly enlightening experience in a beautiful location.
its quite the hypersaturated place, if we talk about Indonesia, its the place to visit because its the club everyone goes to vacation (since its most accessible and famous for). not for culture or place of understanding. its really a one sided relationship to me
Bali is amazing, have been 14 times and only sick once for 2 days. All depends on the experience you want and the places you choose. As a surfer it is an amazing place with great and kind people. I prefer it to Thailand and the natural beauty it has when you get out of Kuta is world class.

There was an awful lot of focus on faith and philosophy surrounding faith and the after life. He was already contemplating the details of his suicide at this point I would guess.

A lot of discussion about death in this episode, and this episode was the final one shot in full prior to Anthony's death.

The Shadowplay story of Bima Swarga
Is often told as part of funerary rites for many reasons
Heaven and Hell are many allegories, not truths
Heaven and Hell exist right here on the mortal plain
No tears shall be shed during the cremation ceremony
Tears only hold back the soul of the departed

Death is but the beginning of another journey…
