    Miles my name is Larry Wheelz and I want to say thank you for creating this video. I’ve been trying to figure out how to hone in on my targeting for Facebook and your video really helped out. Been at this for 8 years and have never made a single sale running Facebook ads. Thank you! I appreciate it.

      YES! Maurice that is the best compliment I've ever received... Makes the time and energy to make that video worth it. To me, the research and 'knowing your customer' part is so crucial and the most overlooked step... But you've probably heard me say that 15 times or more, now! :D

      Sure I will. Oh btw I had earlier set up a website but i built it using the spacious theme. Is it possible for me to create an effective funnel based on that theme? or do you recommend that I change the site to thrive themes?

    • @MilesB

      No idea, never used that theme. Everything is customizable, so if you have CSS skills or hire a developer... I'm guessing it is possible, but probably a lot of work.

    This might sound like a silly question however, when targeting your audience, is it "cheating" to directly target a competing brand or store that offers similar products and services? Wouldn't that be a better start than something somewhat as elusive as an author who might appeal to varying niches? Thanks in advance.

    • @MilesB
      @MilesB  7 років тому +20

      Definitely not cheating!
      Couple things... I do info-products, so authors and books 'fit' with what I do very well... I teach what I know.
      Second, if it is a HUGE brand or store, like 'WalMart' by targeting them you are going to be too broad and have thousands of other advertisers competing with you for those users. Plus, if they bought the widget that fixes their problem and 'liked it' on FB... Do they need another one? Maybe... If it is consumable. But if they've itched the scratch, it isn't a good audience.
      The deeper you go in the interests, the more you find the ones that very few (if any) advertisers are targeting AND that are hyper-relevant... So you get a good deal and have a high probability of converting!
      So what 'problems' does this hypothetical brand/store solve for people? Image? DIY home repair? Gardening supplies? Then, once you figure that out, what books and authors teach people how to do this too? People who are buying and liking books on the topic are interested in information (and products) that can solve their problems.

    Miles, ok...ready for my first official facebook ad with a real product(online course). I think I got it, but...is this what your telling us: 1. Create an ad. 2. Create several 'sets' of different audiences, one per set(I was able to come up with 15). 3. create the sets using the original ad, so not different ads, but different sets of audiences. 4. $5 a day PER SET and then watch closely to see what SET is doing the best. 5. Close the SETS that aren't performing well and increase the budget to the few that are. But in all, Don't change the ad...just the audience? Just in case anyone else is slow on the uptake like I am...thanks for all you do Miles...you're one of the few HONEST people out here anymore...

    • @MilesB
      @MilesB  5 років тому

      LEW! great to see you around. You definitely have the process figured out. this video explains the whole system in one shot: ua-cam.com/video/t1d08czhQ-E/v-deo.html this video shows how to set up (the interface is changed a little but the theory is still sound) ua-cam.com/video/g9JfWuZJ5-M/v-deo.html
      Then this video shows how to analyze the data so you know which ones to turn off and which ones to keep ua-cam.com/video/mcAE1CX-09Q/v-deo.html
      highly recommend you have an opt in page at the beginning so you're building a list while you're promoting in case your ads don't convert the sales right away, if you grow a list you can build a relationship with them and make sales in the future

  • @IvanMana

    Miles, what do I do if my niche is a dieting plan, and the next page like has an audience of about 10 million? (In the video, yours has 464k followed by 25k) This is way too broad and you said as rule of thumb we should use 30 different pages. Should I scroll all the way down and deliberately pick the ones with lowest likes, or just pick that one page then instead of 30?

    • @MilesB
      @MilesB  7 років тому +1

      Definitely too broad to jump into there... But you can add an 'and' interest... To search for people who like this page AND another page that is also big and hyper relevant. Then you get the overlap of only the people who like both... This can be a great targeting method.
      Add the big audience first in the ad set under interests... Then under that you will see a link pop up that says "Narrow Audience" and then it pops up another interest box that says "and MUST ALSO match at least ONE of the following"
      This way you can find people who like 'Paleo Diet Plan' and 'Green Smoothie' or whatever... But make sure both audiences are hyper relevant from the get go.
      And... Be sure to test this adset by itself against a second adset where you have a collection of smaller and hyper relevant interests... With two big pages, the odds of having other advertisers bidding on them is relatively high, so that could bump your cost, but if they are relevant enough it could be worth it.
      Usually, finding the interests that are relevant and take some digging means fewer other advertisers are bidding on that placement and you can generally get a better cost per click... BUT... It is all about the cost per customer, not cost per click... So monitor both ad sets all the way to the $$$!!!! Sometimes a higher CPC results in a lower Cost per customer acquisition and is well worth it in the long run!

    Miles, after you get the 30 interests, do you just split test them like 2 interests per ad group? You cannot bundle them ALL together since that would give you a reach of about 5-10 mill based on the numbers seen in this video right?

    • @MilesB
      @MilesB  7 років тому

      This is up to you... Grouping them out is best, split testing them against each other to see which work best. I would group them on audience size and try to have a 500k to 1.5m audience size per ad set.

      I edit in SCoM... They have 3 quality settings for rendering. Maybe yours is on low?

      Ah yes thanks sir, I noticed the quality of your webcam is not as optimal either when you make the small webcam bigger in edit mode.
      and i also saved file as AVI, not MP4 and quality of the background went up to the fullest as well, just in case anyone wants to know why quality worsens.

    Great video Miles, thanks for all the helpful tips. I see how if you're selling a product your video would be spot on, but what advice or tips would you have for someone who is trying to gain leads for a motivational speaker to get hired? I have a booking agency and want to market my speakers to get booked for speaking gigs. How would I begin targeting my audience and setting up ads to be hired essentially? Any advice would be awesome, thanks for your time and keep the videos coming!

    • @MilesB
      @MilesB  7 років тому

      So, you gotta start with who you are reaching out to... Who books speakers? Then, what are their problems/needs? Then, what are their online browsing habits?
      You may find that Facebook is not the place to advertise... You may find that most of the people trying to book talent are searching UA-cam looking for keynote speakers and having UA-cam ads that lead to a free video demo of a keynote of your performer would work better...
      It is all about getting into the head/heart/life of the person who ultimately books your clients... Then reverse engineering what she does, her behaviors, where she looks, how she looks, etc...
      From this, you can find out where she spends her time *when looking for speakers* and get your message to show up there...
      Displaying your ad to her at night after she is home may not work... And she may not be on Facebook during the day when she is thinking about this problem...
      I have no data to back that all up, just gut instinct.... Testing will tell for sure. Just wanted to give you some additional ideas to think about.

    Myles this is immense. Practical steps that all go towards making a big difference. I actually work as a doctor while running a business so it's all about working smart as well as working hard, so this is invaluable! Can I ask when you were taking about creating a list of the 30 different interests, do you recommend testing them individually with fb ads? i.e Set up an ad, but only have one interest added...and see how that progresses (as opposed to adding multiple interests for one particular ad)?
    Keep up the excellent work!

    Hi Miles, I'm a touring musician. How can I use Facebook to attract audience to a concert in a particular place?
    I thought about exposure in the pre-arrival period ( about a month ) with building a relevant audience based on what you taught in your videos to build a custom engaged audience . Then publish the concert details for the relevant local audience ( as an event??). Does this strategy sound reasonable to you and what campaign options would you choose? Thanks you for sharing and giving.

    • @MilesB
      @MilesB  7 років тому +1

      A big question is going to be what the value of the audience is... Could get expensive quick and if you aren't earning $20 - $40 each, then it could be cashflow negative.
      I'd advertise afternoon of, super short notice... Catch the people who are bored and on their phone looking at Facebook, but within a couple miles of the venue.
      Building up an email list and an audience on UA-cam, Google, etc is a great long term plan.

    This is my favorite you tube video EVER!!! Thank you and you have just gained a new fan!! One quick question, a lot of my competitors are not coming up when I type them in, only one so far, am I doing something wrong?

    • @MilesB
      @MilesB  7 років тому

      Thanks for your kind words… And I appreciate your comment! You are not doing anything wrong... Facebook simply does not display many of their fan pages or groups as "interests" that we can market to. No one knows why that's just how they roll.
      It just requires you to do some more research to find the brands in books and authors and blogs that do have presences on Facebook you can target… And the good news is that your competition is probably not going to do that much research, so when you find a few of those hidden gems you will likely be one of the only advertisers focusing on that audience.
      My niche is very obscure and it took quite some time for me to find my core group of audiences that I've been able to market to for years now.

  • @NaomiBuskila
    @NaomiBuskila 5 років тому +1

    Thank you for this amazing video!!! Do you limit each item to keep only those that have an audience of between 50,000-2 million when they stand alone? Also, do you aim to put on the list the lesser known names so the CPL is more likely to be lower, or you sample everything and see what results show up in the testing?

    • @MilesB
      @MilesB  5 років тому +1

      I don't really limit them. If I'm able to target them with an ad set I do even if they're small… I just don't put large budgets towards small audiences, but I keep them all separated when I run ads because I want to be able to test them against each other to find out which audience segments give me the best return on investment

    • @MilesB

      Gotta get more creative... What is the point in life when people start thinking about term ins? When does it become 'urgent' that they buy?
      Then what else is going on in their world that they would like? Could be 'liking gerber baby food' because they have a baby now and it matters.
      Don't be too literal in the tool... Get in the user's head.... Get in their mindset, their life story, paint a REAL picture.

    This have been REALLY helpful. Just to clarify. Do you end up using the big names like, Tony Robbins? Or just the smaller or other 'interests'? And do you plug in all 30 in your facebook ads?

    • @MilesB
      @MilesB  7 років тому

      My goal is to find the most relevant, whether they are big names or small names. To get a list of 30, the big names usually come 'easily' and then I have to dig in to Amazon, Google, FB and YT to find the smaller ones.
      I do mash all of them into the adset, but sometimes, if I have one really really big interest (like Tony Robbins being 2.5 million where the other 29 add up to 2 million) I would split test them against eachother to see what my cost per customer is with both and then adjust my approach accordingly.
