You would think that that's a clever idea, since the musical already did a good job of modernising Heathers and it would be interesting to see it in a modern setting, but they just bulldoze all over it. The Heathers were fat and LGBT, which robs the point of the show. JD isn't a symphatetic villain, he's a cringe lord. Basically, they took away any nuance of the show just to create a cringey boomer-written show. At least in Riverdale's case, they were cringe waaaay before the Heathers ep, and a musical episode is one of the least of their WTF elements. In a weird way, it bizzarely fits because why wouldn't they be try Heathers? It sucked but you get why they did it The 2018 one has no excuse. They're doing the 'high school' version Heather's. It's an official thing but it's very awkward at point with lyric swaps. You can look up other performances of it, it's not unique to Riverdale. You can't legally just change copyrighted lyrics for the fun of it so they will have purchased the rights to the high school version of it, which is a bit more PG.
Heather's was my introduction to musical and theater. When I heard they were doing a Heather's episode, my heart dropped. From the clips I've seen, disgusting injustice.
I think it's a cult wedding? At least, that's what I've been told. So it isn't actually good/happy (I've never seen the show but my mom used to watch it and she would explain to me how weird the plots were and the cult was bad news), but I'd take J.D. and Veronica "Our Love is God" over the "Riverdale" version any day.
To clear something up: There's a version of the Heathers script that's been edited for high schools, and that's the version they used in the Riverdale episode (because the characters are *supposed* to be in high school).

I don't think the riverdale fans know that in Riverdale they had multiple shots to do the songs plus autotune ect. Heather's the MUSICAL is a musical (no shit) they had one shot with only a soundtrack and mics, no auto tune or multiple shots and they also often compare it to remakes of heathers (like this one) try comparing it to the ORIGINAL you just cant.
They're about the same level, but keep in mind that illegal heathers was high school students doing their best with what they'd been given, and Riverdale was actual professional actors, choreographers, editors, and directors.
A majority of the Riverdale cast CAN sing, that’s established- but the weird sound effects and the heavily edited vocals are what throws it off. I also feel as though, when they record the harmonies, they aren’t in the same room/booth together, and they’re only given a note to come off of, without actually checking to hear what it would sound like when compiled. However, I’d like to commend Riverdale for actually taking criticism from their Carrie and Heathers episodes, and used those for their recent musical-oriented episode, Hedwig and the Angry Inch by ‘sorta’ fixing the harmonies, less editing towards the vocals and toning down the sound effects. Unfortunately, the whole meaning of the musical is lost within the intricacies of Riverdale, but quality-wise, I can say that their latest musical episode is a notch better than the last two. 3rd times the charm, I guess.
Dominique Sucgang the new musical was even worse I thought. Yes they toned down the editing but they shouldn’t have chosen Hedwig. It was terrible. I would have loved to see the scene with J/B and V/A fighting without the song! And last point... Cole Sprouse cant sing. He was alright in 17 in Heathers but they shouldn’t have made him sing. It ruined it tbh!

Another thing that really takes you out of it is the reverb. Maybe I'm nitpicking here, but 17 was recorded like they were in a Church when they were actually in this tiny little room and it really made me feel like I was watching something rather than actually being there.
Gabriel Hughes I just listened to it again, and while Seventeen was the only bearable song in the Heathers episode- it did have sort of an off-feeling with it. I only actually felt into the song around the first parts when Lili Reinhart was singing because she was acting it out so beautifully, but when Cole Sprouse came in, along with Vanessa Morgan and Madelaine Petsch with the backing vocals and the harmonies- it was a bit too much for a scene that demanded so little. If they continue to do more musical episodes, I hope they both get a better choreographer (that in itself is a whole other ordeal HAHAHA) or at least learn from Glee or any movie musical when it comes to breaking into song (technicalities and all).

My first experience with Heathers was actually through this musical (you know, the actual production, not Riverdale), and I have to say that being that it's not even the OG production (and isn't it a high school one iirc?) the show turned out AMAZING. I don't even watch Riverdale, but this episode was a big slap in the face to everything I've heard about it. Honestly, TV shows should NOT do musical episodes when it is not the basis for the show and especially when none of the actors have that kind of experience. For example, I loved Once Upon A Time for quite a while but starting to not watch it as often. Then, that one weird fever-dream-of-a-musical-episode was released, I was honestly done for. It's such an injustice to shows when it gets butchered like that. Too much autotune, what looks like low budgeting for the set designs for said numbers, and horrible choreography is a sure sign that your ep is going to sink. And, unfortunately, this episode is quite an example of that.

They're doing the 'high school' version Heather's. It's an official thing but it's very awkward at point with lyric swaps. You can look up other performances of it, it's not unique to Riverdale. You can't legally just change copyrighted lyrics for the fun of it so they will have purchased the rights to the high school version of it, which is a bit more PG.

To clear something up: There's a version of the Heathers script that's been edited for high schools, and that's the version they used in the Riverdale episode (because the characters are *supposed* to be in high school).
Not completely tho, I saw a high school production of Heathers and some of the stuff was the same as the Riverdale episode and some of it was different. Not all the criticism is about the script, it’s mostly just the auto tune and cringy acting lol

A majority of the Riverdale cast CAN sing, that’s established- but the weird sound effects and the heavily edited vocals are what throws it off. I also feel as though, when they record the harmonies, they aren’t in the same room/booth together, and they’re only given a note to come off of, without actually checking to hear what it would sound like when compiled. However, I’d like to commend Riverdale for actually taking criticism from their Carrie and Heathers episodes, and used those for their recent musical-oriented episode, Hedwig and the Angry Inch by ‘sorta’ fixing the harmonies, less editing towards the vocals and toning down the sound effects. Unfortunately, the whole meaning of the musical is lost within the intricacies of Riverdale, but quality-wise, I can say that their latest musical episode is a notch better than the last two. 3rd times the charm, I guess.
Dominique Sucgang the new musical was even worse I thought. Yes they toned down the editing but they shouldn’t have chosen Hedwig. It was terrible. I would have loved to see the scene with J/B and V/A fighting without the song! And last point... Cole Sprouse cant sing. He was alright in 17 in Heathers but they shouldn’t have made him sing. It ruined it tbh!

Another thing that really takes you out of it is the reverb. Maybe I'm nitpicking here, but 17 was recorded like they were in a Church when they were actually in this tiny little room and it really made me feel like I was watching something rather than actually being there.
Gabriel Hughes I just listened to it again, and while Seventeen was the only bearable song in the Heathers episode- it did have sort of an off-feeling with it. I only actually felt into the song around the first parts when Lili Reinhart was singing because she was acting it out so beautifully, but when Cole Sprouse came in, along with Vanessa Morgan and Madelaine Petsch with the backing vocals and the harmonies- it was a bit too much for a scene that demanded so little. If they continue to do more musical episodes, I hope they both get a better choreographer (that in itself is a whole other ordeal HAHAHA) or at least learn from Glee or any movie musical when it comes to breaking into song (technicalities and all).

My first experience with Heathers was actually through this musical (you know, the actual production, not Riverdale), and I have to say that being that it's not even the OG production (and isn't it a high school one iirc?) the show turned out AMAZING. I don't even watch Riverdale, but this episode was a big slap in the face to everything I've heard about it.
Honestly, TV shows should NOT do musical episodes when it is not the basis for the show and especially when none of the actors have that kind of experience. For example, I loved Once Upon A Time for quite a while but starting to not watch it as often. Then, that one weird fever-dream-of-a-musical-episode was released, I was honestly done for. It's such an injustice to shows when it gets butchered like that. Too much autotune, what looks like low budgeting for the set designs for said numbers, and horrible choreography is a sure sign that your ep is going to sink. And, unfortunately, this episode is quite an example of that.
