Love it. Learn your scales and. repeat. It works for me, I'll say that much. Maybe not at his speed, but I am improving. All well and good the snide remarks, but he is correct. You need to put the hours in and practice.

I haven't played with a pick in sooo long. I can't remember if I'm a flat picker or not. Apparently over the last year I found out its standard to angle the pick. Everyone i see playing angles their pick. I need to find a pick and see if I even remember what I did in the past 10+ years

One thing I can add that I think is helpful is to take one string like John did, then just make up your own intervals/scale. Like say you're going to play the first note, then do whole step, whole step, half step. Then try another combination. Once you find certain scales you like the sound of, THEN look up and see what scale that is. I don't think it's helpful to learn the names of scales unless you actually enjoy them or have already applied them if that makes sense. So basically noodle around, once you find something you like, that's when you should look up the music theory of it.

I wouldn't completely rely on this way of discovering patterns but it's definitely one way.
I remember, back in the day when I didn't get into theory yet, I accidentally discovered the Double Harmonic Scale and then realized it's actually a thing. Definitely very rewarding.

John Petrucci is not just fast, but how he write those licks is what puzzled me most. Like some licks that I know he use major scale, but the sequence of melody is so catchy and good, not just run ascending and descending. I'm pretty sure there's theory behind it, but I don't know yet, and it's not answered in this video.. 😥

Theory is grammar and patterns are vocabulary ...you can use a language if you know the grammar but it wont be as good as someone who has a good command over vocabulary :)

Music theory is the study of music. It explains the music that we hear. Understanding the theory is knowing the language of music. When we examine our music, we look deeper into it than ever thought possible. Music theory is really a discovery of arranged sounds in which it's emotionally expressive and complete.

I disagree John! Im a musician too, a serious guitarist, and music teacher as well. AND my personal perspective is this: 1- No we do not need to understand any music theory! why not? because music is not intellectual! its emotional and audible! ( everyone think about that for a minute! when you hear music? do you think about it? or do you hear it and upon hearing it, you feel it?!!! ) 2- No, we do not need to know where all the notes are all over the fretboard! why not? because again, when trying to express what we are feeling? which is what we as musicians are trying to do. we are all trying to express our feelings or ideas musically, through our instruments. so again this is audible! not intellectual! therefore we dont nee to THINK about where are feelings and thoughts are throughout the fretboard. We need to HEAR where our feelings and thoughts are throughout the fretboard! and we do that by PLAYING and FINDING THEM throughout the fretboard. If it sounds right to you? then it is right! there are no rules for self expression! 3- No, we do not need to learn all the octaves throughout the fretboard. we just need to again, follow our ears and we will automatically know the 3 different octives on the fretboard!! from the headstock, first fret, down to the 6-8th frets you will find all the Bass notes. from the 8-12 frets you will find all the mid range notes, and from the 12-21-22 frets, you will find all the treble notes. there, are all your octives on your fretboard! 4- IF you simply close your eyes and practicing playing and listening to all the different notes and octives all over the fretboard, you will build your ear, mind, and muscle skills! which will absolutley help you play whatever you feel or want to play on your instrument, in this case guitar! ALL the great players, the innovators, the players that took their instruments to the next level and showed everyone things no one else before them tought of? Did it naturally, and by ear!!! NOT THROUGH ANY THEORY! *** now this is important!!! IF YOU ARE SOMEONE WHO JUST WANTS TO PLAY OTHER PEOPLES MUSIC??? YOU CAN STILL DO THAT WITH EVERYTHING I HAVE SAID HERE! BUT!! FOR THOSE SOMEONES, THIS WILL BE VERY DIFFICULT AND TIME CONSUMING, AND FRUSTRATING. WHY IS THAT? BECAUSE THOSE SOMEONES ARE NOT REALLY MUSICIANS. THEY JUST WANT TO BE ABLE TO PLAY OTHER PEOPLES MUSIC AND ENJOY BEING ABLE TO DO SO! SO FOR THEM, IT WOULD BE MUCH BETTER AND MUCH EASIER TO LEARN CHORDS.. THEN THEY CAN JUST BY THE ARTISTS MUSIC BOOKS THAT THEY WANT TO LEARN, AND READ THE CHORDS AND PLAY IT LIKE THAT.. BUT FOR THE REST OF US, WE CAN ALSO DEVELOP OUR EARS BY LISTENING TO THE SONGS THAT WE ENJOY AND IF WE WANT TO LEARN THEM? WE JUST HAVE TO KEEP LISTENING OVER AND OVER AGAIN, UNTIL WE FIGURE IT ALL OUT. WHICH TAKES LONGER, BUT FOR NATURAL MUSICIANS, ITS BETTER BECAUSE IT NOT ONLY HELPS YOU DEVELOP YOUR EARS, BUT IT ALSO HELPS YOU LEARN ALL KINDS OF THINGS THAT OTHER MUSICIANS HAVE COME UP WHEN THEY WROTE THAT MUSIC ON THEIR INSTRUMENT..... If anyone has any questions? let me know..........

All you have said here is encourage people to not seek to become smarter. This is the absolute worst thing you can ever tell anyone.
Why did you learn to read and write? When you don't need to know a language dude! When you want to express what you're feeling you can just yell out in anger, or laugh when happy, or cry when sad! There is no reason for language to exist because we can easily express our emotions in a way everyone can understand!
That's what you just said about music. Music theory is the Language of music. While we can get along just swimmingly if we just grunt around like cave men.... Life is so much easier when you have a language.
To teach such anti intellectualism should be a crime, it's unethical and you should not be permitted to teach anyone.

@@royalcat10 : / I think what you just said should be seriously considered! Thank you. You are proving my statements. IN THAT, expressing ourselves, VERBALLY, AND ARTICULATING OUR THOUGHTS, FEELINGS, OR VERBALLY COMMUNICATING DOES REQUIRE ORGANIZATION AND STRUCTURE AND A COMMON WAY TO DO THAT! words, verbal and written language!!! YES! that is correct!! BUT MUSIC IS NOT THE SAME AS COMMUNICATING WITH EACH OTHER ON THE PREVIOUS VERY PERSONAL AND VERY NECESSARY WAY! Music is SPIRITUAL and does NOT require VERBAL expression or atriculation! IT is subjective to the individuals self expressions yes, BUT MUSICALLY.. MUSIC IS A SOUND, and Its whimsical, and speaks to us all in the forms of rhythms, melodies, and harmonies. SPEAKING VOCALLY DOES NOT DO THAT! THEY ARE @ VERY DIFFERENT FORMS OF COMMUNICATION.. If i am in a courtroom trying to argue a defense of someone? or explain a persons behaviors or feelings, or thoughts or actions? I NEED WORDS TO DO SO! I COULDNT POSSIBLY DO ANY OF THAT WITH A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT!!!! And secondly, MUSIC OF ITSELF IS AUDIBLE. ITS FOR LISTENING AND FEELING.. NOT VERBALLY TALKING OR COMMUNICATING.. Can we say something deep, meaningful and important with music? absolutely! and we do! BUT AGAIN those are emotions expresssed musically. that are only open to INTERPRETATION! I can have my heart broken by an ended romantic relationship, that shatters my universe! and i could TRY to express those feelings and thoughts musically! BUT I COULD NEVER ARTICULATE MY THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS AS CLOSE TO THE WAYS I AM EXPERIENCING THEM MUSICALLY! THERE IS THE DIFFERENCE. MUSIC IS MEANT TO BE LISTENED TO. WHERE AS SPEAKING VOCALLY IS ABOSLUTELY NECESSARY TO OUR LIVING WITH EACH OTHER AS HUMAN BEINGS. YESSSSS!!! we argue and debate all day about people who cant speak verbally/vocally! they have to use writing or computers, or sign language. I understand all that, but that still doesnt change the facts that i have presented. Those people who unfortunately cannot speak vocally? have to learn how to improvise and adapt. And because of great people who have come up with ways for people with those handicaps, and still others with various handicaps, they can! Reading a book and a story on written page is again TOTALLY DIFFERENT THAN LISTENING TO A PIECE OF MUSIC! Again, my over all point is that music comes from within! and of the ears! NOT INTELLECT! ITS A FEELING TO BE EXPRESSED MUSICALLY.. not verbally or vocally. ( unless someone is singing those feelings ofocurse! which just again proves my point here. those expressed lyrics in a musical expression are related with ARTIUCLATED SPOKEN WORDS... SOMETHING THAT IS NECESSARY FROM THE SINGER! BUT WHEN I AM MAKING MY OWN GUITAR SING? OR ANY INSTRUMENT THAT I PLAY SING? I CANNOT MAKE IT SING AS I WOULD VOCALLY WITH WORDS! I CAN HUM! I CAN EXPRESS ONLY SOUNDS MUSICALLY! words and sounds are just very different things! we can do a musical play? using both music and words to express ourselves. but with just the music? the audience would never really understand what exactly the characters were thinking or feeling, or why they did what they did or felt what they felt, or thought what they were thinking????? and THAT leaves alot of the story out! so its not a comprehensive form of personal expression! the way speaking or talking vocally is! All the great musicians, all the innovators, all the musicians who raised the bar musically? did so musically! not intellectually! all those nice people who play in the philharmonic Orchrestra? CANT PLAY ANY MUSIC WITHOUT THEIR CHARTS! THEY CANT MAKE ANY MUSIC WITHOUT READING THE MUSIC FIRST! THAT IS NOT MUSIC IS READING NOTES AND PLAYING WHAT THEY ARE READING! There is a big difference between doing that and MAKING MUSIC FROM YOUR HEART AND SOUL! John Pretucci is a TRAINED MUSICIAN! He approaches the instrument from an intellctual point of view, THEN he tries to FIND WHAT SOUNDS GOOD! INSTEAD OF JUST CLOSING HIS EYES AND FINDING THOSE GOOD SOUNDS WITH HIS EARS AND HEART!!!! Listen to all of his music? its all TOO PERFECT! There is no groove! no feeling. ITs pretty sterile! listen to all of his dream theatre records!!! i have! THEY ALL SOUND EXACLTY THE SAME! ENDLESS NOTES GOING ON AND ON!!! ITS LIKE A A NEVER ENDING DRAMATIZATION! the word that kept coming back to me while studying him and his music, was EPIC.. his music is just EPIC.. and thats fine for some people!! if they enjoy that. I dont.. and even JOE SATRIANI admitted that he too spent 20yrs perfecting music theory and technique, only to spend the next 20 something years of the recent past, to try TO FORGET EVERYTHING HE LEARNED!!!! BECAUSE IT INTERFERES WITH HIS CREATIVITY! AND HIS ABILITY TO EXPRESSS HIMSELF EMOTIONALLY THE WAY HE ALWAYS INSTINCTLY WOULD LIKE TO!!!! And thats ALL I AM GOING TO SAY ABOUT THIS!! But you can still think and believe whatever you like!!! However!!! remember!!! FACTS ARE FACTS! PREFERENCES ARE PREFERENCES!!! ~

@@royalcat10 Hi, no, thats just not correct. The fact is Music and spoken verbal language are very unique and different from each other! Our spoken words, are much more important and precise and clear, and necessary to live with each other. Music is limited in its articulating self expression. And should be. Music is spiritual and something not even science can explain! ITs something we hear! and it has the ability to communicate with us, but from a limited audible way! Quite different than spoken words. Im not going to get into a full lesson here rightnow, about all the ways in which they are both very different concepts and substance. All the great musicians, all the people who have raised the music bars, the technique bars, the sound bars, all were NATURAL MUSICIANS! they used their hearts, and ears to find those sounds.. The " musicians" in the philharmonic Orchrestra? ARE listerally LOST without their music charts! they can only play what they read! if you put them in a room with their instrument and nothing to read???? They will only be able to play something from memory! if that... exercises, scales, modes, chords, ect... BUT! put a person with natural music ability in a room with nothing but their instrument, and depending on their feeling? They will create some real music! John is a trained musician. And while studying him and his music years ago, i quickly realized that his perfect playing, and it is perfect! is soooo pefect that is sterile, and unmusical! IF anyone would just listen to all of his music? they will hear the SAME THING OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER.... the one word that kept coming up while i was studying his music was, EPIC! his music is EPIC! and there are many people who like it! But that doesnt change any of the facts here! So lets not waste any more of anyones time arguing or debating about the FACTS! if you ( who i am replying to ) or anyone who reads this? wants to learn music theory? ok thats up to them. but the natural, born, musicians of the world, already know, they do not! and when a young person first show insterest in a musical instrument they should be tested to see if they can play it naturally or not? they can be taught how to play music! yes. BUT they cannot be taught how to connect with that instrument, personally, and naturally, and to express themselves intimately, and completely genuinely! and they cant be taught rhythm either! We either have it or we dont. a Metronome is only going to help you to know and understand different rhythms. That is not the same as FEELING THOSE RHYTHMS! AND let me leave everyone with a statement that came from one of my all time favorite and influential people and guitarists, Joe Satriani! He is also formally trained! he trained himself mostly, but he still knows ALL MUSIC THEORY AVAILABLE!!! And alot of his music, not all, but most is also too perfect and a bit sterile and sounds the same! ( I do love you Joe! ) AND EVEN HE HAS SAID AND I QUOTE HIM!!! " I have spent 20 years mastering muisc theory, notes, scales, modes, chords, techniques, And have spent the last 20 something years trying to forget everything i have learned!!!! because its interferes with my creativity, and natural ability to express what i want to express" !!! ~ yes! BECAUSE music is audible! its sound.. NOT INTELLECTUAL...........................

Tone is subjective. You may like his tone better in yesteryear. Some will argue with you that his tone is better now (like me). I prefer his tone now. How to measure technique? As far as I'm concerned his technique has always been brilliant. What's more brilliant is how he applies his techniques and is constantly evolving. So saying his technique and tone has gotten worse is based on what? Your personal preference.
