The president spoke eloquently and quite beautifully, at great length, in terrific detail about each of these American icons. It looked for all the world like he was speaking without notes, without a Teleprompter, completely off the cuff. Yet he offered lengthy quotes, was both funny and charming, and never missed a beat. His performance was every bit as strong as those of any of the honorees he described. He deserves to be on the stage with them as much as they deserved to be there.
Definitely not completely off the cuff. He may have memorized much of this, and he likely had some notes on the podium. There was also some improvising. The delivery was definitely his style. He certainly did a great job, overall, but I am absolutely sure he did not make this whole thing up off the cuff, in the moment. Quite eloquent, though. No question about that. He has great comic timing, too.
