  • In this video I'll share the 30 Caran d'Ache Luminance pencils that I put together earlier this month to create a complete palette suitable for most of my landscape and nature artwork. If you also favour muted, earthy, softer colours (with perhaps a hint of brighter colour here and there), then this video is for you! But even if this isn't your usual colour palette, I hope that this will inspire you and that you'll perhaps discover some new colours that you'd like to add to your own collection. Let me know your favourite Luminance colour from their range of 100 in the comments section below!

    I have become obsessed with Caran d'Ache Luminance pencils!!! You are enabling my habit ;-).
    I can't limit myself to my absolute favourite, so here are my Top 5:
    Burnt Ochre 10% (872)
    Burnt Sienna 10% (862)
    Olive Brown (039)
    French Grey (808)
    Violet Grey (093) (I have just seen that I have three of them! LoL)
    Every time I do an order from Jackson's I add at least 5 more pencils to my order!
    Love your Suffolk videos, by the way, and look forward to seeing more xxx

    Ive been watching your videos for a few months now and find them so relaxing, its very nice to just sit back with some tea or to just chill out and destress before bed, they really help me to sleep and I find your energy very soothing! Mother vibes (as im only sixteen). typically i dont gravitate towards these types of videos but as an artist myself seeing the supplies you use and your process is cool along with the comfort the time watching brings. I did a similar exercise a few years ago with my Polychromos pencils, choosing a selection of 24. I always wanted to redo it and see how my preferences have changed. From the Luminance pencils I really like very similar colours as in your collection, the Pink White, Dark Indigo and the French Greys. And of course the Derwent Drawing Chinese White! 😎

    I love that you have some very silimar colours but that you include them anyway 😄 I'm amazed you got down to 30 colours. I'm glad the derwent drawing pencils just don't have anymore colours, so the choice is alread made for me. And the luminance are not in my price range, that's easy too. I have the brutfuner 120 set. Or it might be 150, I'm not sure ☺️ there are so many colours, I can mix and match to my hearts content. I'll interested to see how long your 30, next time 31 colours stay this way. Let us know if there are any changes or additions!

    These videos are always really great to watch and listen to.Really insightful to hear why you choose the colours you like and to hear how you will use them in your work and how you can use them to mix and later too.Iy hell's and inspires us as we put our own palettes together,but also a created palette like this could also inspire a new way of working or ideas for new work.I think the way you use coloured pencils in your magical work is what gives it that distinct look that we know and love as your work.From the Luminance range some of the colours I love are,colbolt green,terracotta,Cassel earth,Indian yellow,anthraquinone carmine,buff titanium,sanguine russet,ultramarine pink,blue de nimes,dark indigo,carnelian,malachite green,purplish red,sepia,Payne's gray 30%.I love that Luminance pencils also have some colours in different percentages as this really useful and I must confess I own all of these! It will be interesting to see artwork created with this palette.(Matt) p.s I have sent you a little gift which you should receive quite soon

    What a great idea to keep a palette of "Can't live without" pencils at your Mum's house - less travel means less chance of breakage, and a luminance pencil with a shattered core would be highly upsetting!
    I don't own any luminance pencils, and from these swatches I don't know if I can choose just one favourite. I love all of the greys you chose (and what a fine range they offer), but Olive Yellow and Carnelian both peaked my interest, because I don't have anything similar in my collection.

    Thanks for sharing your favourites. What's my favourite? That's a really difficult one. I tried both the luminance and the lightfast and ultimately got the lightfast (they are more translucent, so suit ethereal fantasy better). But there are a few colours that are only in one of the other (so I'd obviously like to choose all of those, please!). If you really pushed me to choose just one colour from the luminance set, I'd have to go with Anthraquinoid Pink because it is such a beautiful shade, on the peachy side of pink, perfect for sunsets and roses. And because I like the name in French... 😊

I don't want bigger ranges for each brand because I get overwhelmed while using, for exemple, a set of 100 (luckly for my wallet). I fell like I will gravitate towards muted shades, but witch kinds of colors should I get for landscapes, urban landscapes, some floral and the eventual realistic drawings?

    Hey Natasha….have been so busy last few days …I did not read the post by the annoying person that you spoke of on Instagram! I also have made some very small comments on some videos on You Tube….even Twitter….and have been vehemently attacked! Unnecessarily so….over NOTHING! It seems that people are just full of hate! They strike out at people over nothing really. I am so sorry that this hate was aimed at you……we love you out here all of us Newts! Hang in there.

      Thank you, Lynn! It's almost as if this type of behaviour is becoming the norm now (I really hope not). I'm sorry to hear that you've dealt with it too. x

    Do they smudge like Derwent Drawing pencils? This is something I do not prefer that much

    Are the luminance pastel pencils, they seem powdery, leaving little crumbs.

      No, they're just normal coloured pencils. :)

    Hi, I am trying to solve a question I have about these pencils. I have 13 luminance pencils and I feel a little confused because everyone says they feel amazing, but mine all feel dry like pastel does. They are opaque and pigmented but they feel scratchy and dry. Only one color, dark sap green 739 feels creamy and waxy, like I expected them all to be, which makes me think the rest of the ones I have are somehow defective? I don't know. It's weird.

    • @NatashaNewtonArt

      Hi Loati! Most of mine are creamy and waxy, with just the odd colour being a bit more scratchy, so I think that yours might be defective? I'm not sure what's happened there, but the lovely texture of these pencils is one of the things I love about them!

      @@NatashaNewtonArt thank you for your response! In fact my suspicions are coming true because I've been enquiring and I've been told the same as you. I bought mine open stock so I must be getting a bad batch or something. Which makes me kind of sad because they are not cheap. At least they still are opaque and pigmented even though they dont feel the greatest for a colored pencil.

    Interesting that they have different shades of Payne's Grey. I don't think I've seen that in other brands. Great video! Thank you! I love Chrysocolla.
    Question on a side: Have you tried Derwent Graphitint? They're watercolourable and mixed with charcoal or graphite, so they have rather muted tones.

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  2 роки тому

      I haven't yet but they do look lovely!

    •  2 роки тому

      @@NatashaNewtonArt I have a traveller set of tinted charcoal and a box of Graphitint and they're great for night scenes and undergrowth nature. I use them quite often. I would show you a couple of paintings made with them to give you the feeling, but UA-cam doesn't like links or files 😅

    what does the percentage mean in caran d'ache pencils?

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  4 місяці тому

      It's the colour mixed with white to make it paler, so in Payne's Grey 30%, it's 30% PG and 70% white, in PG 60%, it's 60% PG and 40% white. Does that make sense?! The lower the percentage, the paler the colour. :)

    Those look very crumbly..do you find that, and does it bother you…they seem to disappear ..wear done quickly…why do you like this brand?

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  2 роки тому +1

      They are quite soft/crumbly but I love the texture of them and the amount of pigment. Other pencils can sometimes be too hard for me and they don't have a strong or intense enough colour, but these do. Also, the colour range is just beautiful! The high lightfastness is also a huge plus for me. There are pros and cons to all ranges of coloured pencils, but these seem to suit me the best.

    I don’t have any luminance pencils yet. I want them all, but they’re so expensive! Do you have to get the 100 set to get these 30 colors, or are they all available in a smaller set?

    • @madisonlecong6083
      @madisonlecong6083 2 роки тому

      They’re available individually I think

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  2 роки тому

      You can buy them individually at Jackson's! There's a link to Jackson's in the video description. Just search 'Luminance pencils' and the individual ones should come up too. :) I would advise buying individually rather than in sets. If I bought a set, I'd have so many I wouldn't really use.
