A message for my lovely patrons: I'll be sharing more of the project I'm currently working on with you in a process/behind-the-scenes video before the end of July! xxx About this video: Part one of a new series where I'll be sharing my entire coloured pencil collection with you. In this video we'll be looking at all of the blues and blue-greys I currently own. I'll tell you which brands are my favourites and why, which shades of blue I use the most, and I'll swatch all of the pencils for you too! This is a super relaxing video - I hope that you enjoy it and perhaps find it useful. Natasha xxx
I also wanted to say that not only do I think that you're an amazing artist, but also a very talented entertainer (I really don't want to say youtuber, because I mean something more😅). I love listening to you talk about art supplies, and your work of course - there's just something so calming and pleasing, entertaing and just simply enjoyable about your videos and the narrative in them💛
What a great session, the fact the pencils were all shades of blue/grey was really interesting for comparison. I would love to know how you store your pencils? Are they colour grouped, or brand? Do you have them stored loose? Love hearing of ways people have their art supplies stored for easy access when inspiration strikes... Keep up the wonderful work Natasha x
My favourite coloured pencil is Chrysocolla Blue (Caran D'Ache Luminance, named after a rare gemstone). I adore the colour turquoise, and this is a very beautiful, pure one. Apparently the meaning of Chrysocolla is communication, teaching, and transformation, which seem like very Natasha qualities! I love your helio turquoise on here too. Thanks for this super-calming video Natasha 🐦
I love this, and I've ordered it! Along with a couple of others suggested to me in the comments section, and some colours I got tempted by while I was on Jackson's, ha ha! x
CDL Ultramarine has my vote. Absolutely stunning blue. I bought a couple colors after watching your video. Was looking for blues that had less green tint because I wasn’t getting the vibrancy I wanted with my drawing and now I’ll be giving a few a chance.
Yes to all the slightly different shades for different moods on different days! I've just recently realised that having different sets means slightly different shades and not just the same colours in more or less expensive brands. This is not a good thing for my spending, its wonderful for the colour lover in me. The only thing is I love bright colours too. And I love having all the colours... I still have my pencils sorted by brand. One I might sort them by colour 😊💙 Oh and I still absolutely love watching and listening to your swatching 💙💙💙
I really enjoyed this video. There are very few blues I don’t love, but I especially liked the blues on the bottom of the left page. They feel like a good bridge between light and dark as well as between grey and blue. Always a pleasure to hear your thoughts about color selection and hear your lovely, calming voice. Looking forward to more in this series. Thank you for sharing!😘
Thank you for your kind comments, I'm so glad that you enjoyed it! I look forward to filming more (I'm thinking that greens should be next...naturally!). ;)
So lovely listening as I painted. Thank you. I have a mish-mash of colored pencils brands. My treasures are the Luminance and Lightfast, but I really do like the Derwent Drawing too. And I’ll say, I really like my Prismacolors and find them a joy to blend and layer.
Thanks for this one! I have that magpie streak for blues and greens as well. Must collect them all! I bought the Derwent Drawing set and adore them. But I think I will have to add a few of these colors. I also collect everything Payne's Grey and Indigo which look so lovely with Buff Titanium paint. So I will say the Cobalt Genuine is my new find from this range. I love old cobalt glass!
I just seem to watch your pencil swatching vids over and over... just love your colours and how you have diff lines/open stock... which I never understood before since I have full set syndrome but have now come around to and am building my own “palette” ... thanks to you!
I love your bouquet of colored pencils! It was fun and educational watching you swatch the color pencils. I have some Prismacolor colored pencils but my heart belongs to Derwent 💗🤷🏼♀️👩🏼🎨. I haven’t purchased any Caran d’Ache colored pencils. Thank you for sharing always great to see you. Looking forward to your next video. Fran
Thank you for sharing! I cannot think of a realistic color I do not love. Not into neon colors though. I only buy open stock of the other brands looking for the highest rated pigments used. The Derwent Lightfast & Drawing Pencil are the heavier ones because the core size of both 4mm. Luminance is 3.8mm. The Derwent lightfast barrel is also a tad wider than Luminance and the hardwood used is pretty dense and heavy in both. I like the feel of the three DD, DL & CDL in my hard too since I have arthritis and they cause less pain.
Watching this two years later, but there are some very lovely blues in the Derwent Coloursoft line. Particularly the lighter blues like Baby Blue, Iced Blue and two favorites: Cloud Blue and Pale blue. There's also a nice Indigo and Prussian Blue. And since you include some blue-grays, there's also Steel Grey and Mid Grey, which are on the blue side. 88% of the Coloursoft line is lightfast.
This is perfect timing! I just dusted off my old set of Prismacolor Premier 120 set today! I really don't believe in coincidences. They're up to 150 colors now, so I have to work on getting the other 30. Prismacolor has been my go-to pencil for years, but I'm always willing to try other brands. Some of the other muted blues I think you'll like are: Sky Blue Light Cloud Blue Periwinkle (more of a muted grayish blue) Mediterranean Blue Blue Violet Indigo Light Cerulean Blue Any of their cool and warm greys. And probably some new ones I don't have yet. All right up your alley, as we say in the US. 😁 I know it can be difficult to get an accurate color reference online, so if you have any questions about the Prismacolors please let me know. Now I can't wait for the next series of colors! BTW, have you tried tinted graphite pencils? I know Derwent makes them (also in water soluble and tinted graphite watercolors) and Faber Castell might also. I want to try the water soluble ones. ❤️
If you want to explore some brighter blues, Prismacolor True Blue and Copenhagen Blue are gorgeous (as well as the brighter CDL bright blues). Love your content.
This video is very timely for me as I cough and sneeze away the day in splendid isolation (picked up a lovely dose of covid from a colleague). With regard to pencil reccomendations and specifics, "Ooh, pretty colours!" is about my limit at the moment, I'm afraid, but thanks for keeping me company, I really appreciate it!
Hi, Natasha! Thank you for the video about all those lovely blues! I also like such powdered and dusky, grayish blues. I think you might like Derwent Coloursoft Cloud Blue C360, Derwent Graphitint Dark Indigo 04, Derwent Graphitint Cool Gray 23, Cretacolor Karmina Ultramarine 271 55, Derwent Watercolour Blue Gray 68, Derwent Watercolour Gunmetal 69, Derwent Watercolour Kingfisher Blue 38, Faber Castell Polychromos Delft Blue A141, Faber Castell Polychromos Indanthrene Blue A247, Faber Castell Polychromos Sky Blue A146, Faber Castell Polychromos A153 Cobalt Turquoise, Faber Castell Polychromos Light Cobalt Turquoise A154, FC Polychromos Cobalt Green A156, FC Polychromos Deep Cobalt Green A158, FC Polychromos Prussian Blue A246, Cretacolor Marino Bremen Blue 241 63 (watersoluble pencil).
I barely even started and just had to comment again - I absolutely love the way the pencils are organized in the jar at the beginning. That's how I plan to have mine too - though I haven't thought about putting them upside down... will have to consider that option🤔😊. Mine are in a plastic container that little tomatoes came in, with a writing on it (it's in polish, so these aren't the exact words) : greengrocer: little tomatoes - and I just think it's adorable😚 just wanted to share 😄 now back to watching!
That's so cute! :) I did have them up the other way but couldn't see the colours very well. The way they're stored now makes life much easier. You just have to be careful not to break the points when you put them back in the pot! I haven't had a problem so far though.
Fantastic video, I’ve spotted a couple that I would like to add to my collection. I am Payne’s grey all the way along with midnight black and the dark indigo again used at times with the pink white. I also like a muted Smokey blue type of colour as well. Thanks for the lovely swatches x
Hello, All the colors, shades, tints or hues you have chosen are my absolute favorite colors. I do not draw well at all but I try. These colors are the ones I use because I love winter and try to draw winter forests with all the snow and shadows, so these colors are perfect. Thank you.
This is so funny, I just finished doing exactly this with my colored pencil collection! I also purged a bit, so when having a few colors that looked a like, I picked one for my pot on the desk, and put the others in a drawer. And marked them on my swatches. I have collected quite a few similar colors, which was quite an eye opener😇
Love your blue colours of the pencils! 😍 Also the painting right at the beginning of the video, had a bit of a tropical vibe, not sure if it was intentional but looked super interesting! 🧡
I have many favourites : sky mist, both smoke blues, ink blue, blue de nîmes and dark indigo (I also have all of them). I haven’t tried Pablo pencils, but I absolutely love supracolor soft, sometimes even more than luminance in some tones. They’re truly super soft and pigmented, and have a similar range to other lines from Caran D’Ache.
@@NatashaNewtonArt my lovely boyfriend bought me the luminance pencils for my birthday last year and I’ve played with them some but don’t know them as intimately as I know my prismacolors. Looking forward to having them all play nicely together!!
I use to use prismas since they blend so well, but stopped using them since they are notorious for breakage nice selection of blues, perfect for any situation
I've just discovered your channel and am loving it... especially the coloured pencil videos so thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and experiences with us. May I ask you a question? Do you mix all your pencil brands together when storing them (as in your jar of mixed colours at the beginning of this video) or do you normally keep brands separate from each other. This is a genuine question as I tie myself in knots sometime with organising my collection :).
I absolutely love this! So looking forward to the rest of this series! I love your work and all your swatch vids. They are so relaxing. I love collecting art supplies (alcohol markers & coloured pencils mainly) and swatching and organizing them is the best part. I find it so relaxing for my ocd-tendencies haha From watching other artists on YT do this, feel I need to comment that browns are just dark oranges/red-oranges/yellow-oranges and pinks are tinted reds/red-violets. It really irks me when they separate them and treat them as their own when we don't do that to dark or light blues, purples or greens. I'm sure you know this as a pro artist LOL, but thought I'd just comment this out into the internet void. Keep up the great art and great vids. Truly love your vids and so glad I found this channel.
Thank you for your kind comment, and I agree with you - it's such a relaxing thing to do. :) I must admit that sometimes even I struggle to categorize colours, and I've been a professional artist for years!
My favourite blue must be my light ultramarine Polychromo, seeing how short it is. I think I have all the DD, CDL and FCP pencils you have. I think there are a handful of Lightfast I’d like to add. This was a lovely watch, thank you 💙
Fun fact: as per Wikipedia, ‘ Denim' originated as a contraction of the French phrase serge de Nîmes ('serge from Nîmes'). Serge means a ‘sturdy fabric’. Here’s the link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denim?wprov=sfti1 So, according to this, the CD color “blue de Nîmes “ should be the same with the DL color “denim”, don’t you think? Lovely video, Natasha, thank you for sharing with us. Hugs from California. 🤗
Thanks for sharing this - that's interesting. :) They should be the same, but are in fact quite different! I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video. x
Oh also, do you have plans to do a video about your favourite handmade watercolours? I've loved your videos on those and I've been missing those paints☺️😗
I do have plans! I'm going to be continuing my watercolour series in general, and 'My Favourite Watercolours: Handmade Edition' will be one of the videos. :)
Loved this Natasha! Your Bleu de Nimes looks like my Derwent Lightfast Blue Violet. I can never decide whether it should live in the section with my blues or with the purples! I’m still hunting for the perfect dark turquoise but it’s a treat for me to look at the colour charts and choosing.😉x
This was relaxing and interesting. I reach for my Holbeins far more than all the others combined. They're just so pretty. My least favourite are the Derwent Lightfast. CD come second after Holbein. The design of the pencil has the edge over DL. I would say though that you simply can't go wrong buying any of these brands.
Thank you. :) I'm really interested to know why you're not as keen on the Derwent Lightfast! They're all gorgeous pencils and I'm lucky to be able to have added so many to my collection over the past two years. The Holbein Sky Mist is particularly beautiful!
@@NatashaNewtonArt Oh I don't mind them Natasha I just find them a little blah. They're consistent and layer very well but for me they lack the wow factor. See; when I use them I always feel annoyed lol. The colour is never quite right and the barrel is ugly. CD pencils are not always consistent but oh boy they got everything else absolutely right. Have you smelt a full box of them? You don't mind paying the price when they put so much thought into pleasing the artist. Now compare it to a full tin of DL lol. No comparison. My Holbein's are beautiful. I haven't found a colour in the set I don't love. Yes I know some of them are not lightfast but I don't care. The pastels, the pinks, powder blues, neutrals and range of soft muted to olive greens are gorgeous. This is the set I would gift to someone looking for fun and joy. They don't layer as well as DL but again; moi doesn't care. DL are absolutely the right choice if you're into moody tones and selling your art. I love your art and enjoy the magic you produce with such a steady workhorse.
Loved this Natasha! Your videos are so calming to watch, I had it on in the background while I sorted commercial invoices for wholesale orders...it's usually an infuriatingly boring task but listening to you and seeing all those beautiful blues emerge made it much more enjoyable! My favourite pencils (at the moment!) are the faber Castell Polychromos...have you tried their Helio turquoise? It's got a bit of green in it and is quite inky looking, you may like it :) X
Thanks Lee, I'm so glad that you enjoy the videos! I love to listen to my favourite art UA-camrs while I'm doing my accounts, so I know what you mean. ;) I do have the Faber-Castell Polychromos Hello Turquoise - it actually features in this video! Such a beautiful colour. xx
@@NatashaNewtonArt Oh, ha ha, so it does! Must have been writing a customs declaration while that was on or something 😆Glad it is already on of your favourites anyway...and yes, Hello Turquoise is much more fun! XX
Have you tried the caran d’ache museum aquarelle? They’re wonderful. Many are similar colours to the luminance range (but they have a few different ones) but seeing the colours come to life with water is amazing, so vibrant. And some really lovely moody colours that you’d enjoy. Think my fave colours are Dark plum, olive yellow and russet. Oh and they seem to be permanent once they’ve been fully activated, which I find useful.
Hi Natasha, hope you are well. I love your youtube videos as I do on Patreon. Love all your blue and grey’s I’m also a fan of blue and grey they have always been my favourite colours. My walls in my house are blue’s and greys. I love Caran D’ache Luminance and Derwent Lightfast they are beautiful as are the Derwent drawing pencils. Also Natasha just wanted to say I received my order from Trupti (Akkar creations) and the paints are just fantastic so much pigment and the sketchbook is amazing and so beautifully wrapped. I messaged Trupti to let her know how I was so impressed with the paints and sketchbook. I will definitely be ordering from her again. Xxx 💗
Hi Louise! Thank you, lovely - I really appreciate your kind words. :) I'm so happy to hear that you love the paints from Trupti! They arrived quite quickly, didn't they? They're so gorgeous to work with. I'm sure that Trupti was thrilled to hear that you love them! xxx
Blue is so beautiful. You can never have too many blues. When you remove the grey....you need more Blue? Do you have a pencil that would be a copper blue or a patina Blue?
Hi Natasha! Do you have any experience laying colored pencils with Oil Pastels, and if so, what would you recommend? Thanks for all your amazing videos!
Oh that's great Natasha I love your color videos, but every time I wonder about the meaning of lightfast, does it mean that the color remains stable in the light for long years only, or are there other advantages to this feature? Also, I wonder what is the difference between Lightfast and Lightfastness Thank you for this relaxing video💖
Lightfast and Lightfastness are pretty much different ways of saying the same thing, and it means that the colour will remain stable when exposed to light. There are varying degrees of lightfastness, and if you sell or display your work, it's a good idea to choose materials with a high lightfast rating. :)
@@NatashaNewtonArt Thank you! I really loved that first video. I love the same color palette as you. love your recommendations.after the first one I updated my blues . I look forward to all of your videos and podcasts
I love luminance pencils but they are so very expensive here in Canada. We have prismacolors everywhere out here but I find the quality to be hit or miss sometimes 😕 and I totally get the mind going blank while filming, I know I have thoughts and feelings about the supply in my hand but as soon as I need to say it when the camera is on I go blank or say stupid things that I have to cut out anyway lol

Thank you for your kind comment, and I agree with you - it's such a relaxing thing to do. :) I must admit that sometimes even I struggle to categorize colours, and I've been a professional artist for years!
Thanks for sharing your favorite blues. What paper is your favorite for working in colored pencil? Looking forward to your next video.
I really like Arches hot pressed watercolour paper or Aquarella paper from Choosing Keeping. :)
Okay this took me a few days to get through. I had finals this week. But I loved it! Thanks for the beautiful content
Thank you for watching, Amber! I hope that everything went well for you this week. :)
So enjoyable, loved this! Which sketch book is that?
Thank you! It's the wonderful Pith Oroblanco sketchbook. :)
My favourite blue must be my light ultramarine Polychromo, seeing how short it is. I think I have all the DD, CDL and FCP pencils you have. I think there are a handful of Lightfast I’d like to add. This was a lovely watch, thank you 💙
Thanks Sonya, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm going to check out the Light Ultramarine Polychromos now. :)
Fun fact: as per Wikipedia, ‘ Denim' originated as a contraction of the French phrase serge de Nîmes ('serge from Nîmes').
Serge means a ‘sturdy fabric’.
Here’s the link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denim?wprov=sfti1
So, according to this, the CD color “blue de Nîmes “ should be the same with the DL color “denim”, don’t you think?
Lovely video, Natasha, thank you for sharing with us. Hugs from California. 🤗
Thanks for sharing this - that's interesting. :) They should be the same, but are in fact quite different! I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video. x
Oh also, do you have plans to do a video about your favourite handmade watercolours? I've loved your videos on those and I've been missing those paints☺️😗
I do have plans! I'm going to be continuing my watercolour series in general, and 'My Favourite Watercolours: Handmade Edition' will be one of the videos. :)
@@NatashaNewtonArt Yay🎉🎉🎉 Can't wait!
Thank you, I love this series already
That's great to hear Ana, thank you!
I have several pencils like that where I can't decide which category they should be in! x
@@NatashaNewtonArt As long as I can find it easily! I think you might be like me, needing order. ;) xx
Such a beautiful colour. xx
It's autocorrected Helio Turquoise to Hello Turquoise - I quite like that, ha ha!
@@NatashaNewtonArt Oh, ha ha, so it does! Must have been writing a customs declaration while that was on or something 😆Glad it is already on of your favourites anyway...and yes, Hello Turquoise is much more fun! XX
There is a book by Michel Pastoureau...Blue, the History of a color. A must read for you.
Agreed. And the box smells delicious. Some more brighter, happier colours would be wonderful.
I have a few of them and I really like them! The colours are beautiful.
You have a very relaxing voice.
Oh, thank you!
Hi Natasha! Do you have any experience laying colored pencils with Oil Pastels, and if so, what would you recommend? Thanks for all your amazing videos!
I'm sorry, I don't! But if anyone in the comments section does, please could you let us know! :)
Natasha , when will your next video be about favorite color pencils?
I'm not sure yet, Brenda! Possibly next month.
Thank goodness for editing, eh?! ;)
Natasha!
Hello!
@@NatashaNewtonArt Natasha, you are a ray of sunshine ☀️…have a wonderful evening over there!
Can you imagine color pencil producers: 🤔" I wonder, what color is the smoke?"
Ha ha!
Your swatches look like beautiful little birds eggs🥚
If you were stranded on a desert island, what 7 blues would you hope to have with you?
Too hard to choose but definitely Derwent Drawing Ink Blue and Smoke Blue and Luminance Dark Indigo (and Payne's Greys if they count as blues!).
First!
