This exact thing happened to me after putting some mud flaps on a mk3 fiesta. Had to take the wheels off to drill the holes. Then took it for a drive and started getting a crazy vibration all through the car shell at about 40-45. When I checked back leftwheel nuts were finger tight. Could have flown off any moment…I will put a bit more effort in with the tire iron next time!

Yeahhh - brings back memories. Had a MK2 Cortina way back and my mate and I changed the front nearside wheel. All seemed well until about an hour later in the middle of a large city it came off while making a (speedy) right turn and bounced around a bit before rolling off on a journey of it's own. After my mate did a bit of sprinting and retrieved it, and I recovered all four bolts from the busy road (luckily they came off together) we just stuck it back on and off we went. A valuable lesson learned (tighten your nuts or it could lead to an embarrassing situation - not just in motoring either!)

I once went to a local 5-star rated independent tyre fitter who replaced 2 new tyres on the front of my van. 5 minutes of driving and the van was shaking badly. Upon returning to the fitter he said I had loosened the bolts (nope) and when that didn't fly, he said they were the wrong wheels for the van (original to the van).

You have to be really careful with tyre fitters, they can often put the wrong size of tyre (wrong height index/the 3rd tyre size value) which causes issues with steering vibration and increased wear on suspension parts. Really need to check carefully or just order your own online

I actually drove to Bristol on a Transit from Durham thinking the knocking sound was a drive shaft. It only started knocking as I passed Doncaster on the way down. Drove the rest the way there. Did my delivery and drove home in Durham. Next day, took it into a garage and turned out somehow, all 4 of my standard wheel studs on my osf wheel was loosened off and the cap but over. It only the locking wheel nut that was tight. That was in a loaded Transit at around 2.8t with a trailer loaded with an old Vauxhall Chevette

When I worked at a garage I had the costume of walking the nuts 'all the way to the end' by hand before tightening them with the pneumatic pistol. Due to lack of communication we once released a car that had it's bolts/nuts tightened only by hand. The guy drove all over the town and came back at the end of the day complaining about some noise coming from the wheel in question and when a colleague of mine checked it he found most of the bolts less than a full turn away from falling off, lol.
He tightened them properly and told the owner that there was a bent piece of metal making that noise and that he straightened it up again. It was a miracle that his wheel didn't come loose as he was driving.

One time when I was doing a brake disc change on my own car I threw the wheels back on and then something came up and distracted me from torquing them down properly, next day I then set off on a long journey, bombing down the motorway at 140KPH and starting to feel a wobble in the steering wheel and a strange noise, eventually pulled over and saw the wheel was missing 2 of the 4 wheel bolts and the other two were halfway turned out. Luckily I had a set of 4 security bolts I had just removed from the day before to replace the missing bolts with. Needless to say I made sure they were torqued to FT specs before I took off again 🤣
I shudder to think what would've happened if the wheel came off at 140 on the motorway 🤣

As this experiment was done on a right hand wheel, it’d be interesting to repeat on the left side as the nuts should unwind themselves much easier. Some older cars and trucks, especially those with centre lock wheels, use left hand threads on that side to prevent unwinding but it’s only an issue if not fully torqued.

My Xtype Jag was dropped off at my house after it's mot. My partner took it to work the next day and brought it straight back. They'd fit new rubber on the front and inner rear bushes. and front hub They hadn't tightened the hub nut up at all, none of the wheel nuts were tightened and they had somehow managed to damage the rear abs cables when fitting the inner bushes. I took it back and they tried to charge me to look at what they'd not done and then had a go at me saying it was my wheel spacers that cause the wheel to come loose and banned me from the garage services and fuel. I'd had the spacers fit for over a year with no issue. South Uist for you.

I had the experience in Summer 2020 of wheel nuts on my '55 Chevy Gasser undoing themselves and eventually it spat the right rear wheel off. They were more than finger tight to start with, but obviously not tight enough.
Probably didn't help that it has a 600-ish bhp V8.
Fortunately the wheel came off when I was only doing about 20mph, so both I and the car lived.

Had something similar happen to one of my cars. I was upgrading the suspension to some nice Bilstein shocks and forgot to tighten the wheels properly, only using an impact gun. It didn't help either that the wheels spacing were 4x98 and my car is 4x100. Anyway when returning home from my test drive I felt the car was kinda wobbly in the back, I let off the gas and then one of my rear wheels popped off. Not fun, not fun at all. My rear brake drum fell into the wheel and it was just sitting there on the wheel.
My dad was with me so he lifted up the rear of the car by hand and I installed the 3 bolts we still found and drove home very very slowly.

I allready know the answer to this one!
I had a broken prop shaft on my company vw caddy for ages that my employer didn't want to pay to fix.
So one day the shaking got worse, i mean it was vibrating for months, and then i had winter tyres fitted and it vibrated just the same for a few weeks, right?
Then after a particulary bumpy road it started to go from vibration to shaking, so i just kept driving it to make the eployer HAVE to fix it...
Well turns out that the lug-nuts had come loose from the constant vibration and that one really bad road.
Lost my tyre after a mile.
Only my pride and the front disk brake was really hurt as i was going maby 5mph when it happened.
The prop shaft was actually fixed after all.

My son had a service and MOT at a green & yellow-bannered multi-national tyre business branch in Rugeley, Staffs, then drove 120 or so miles to Swansea in South Wales at which point he called me to come and help because there was a strange knocking sound coming from the front. 200 mile round trip with a boot full of tools just to discover finger tight wheel nuts on the left front wheel, but thankfully all still present. Thanks green and yellow multi-national.... Wasn't the first car you **cked up at that branch either!

I thought you left your wrecking cars behind you. But it seems you were the reason I insubbed from car throttle channel. I guess I need to do the same here.

Here's a video suggestion, can you make a MK4 Golf handle at a racetrack? I cured the understeer (sort of) but now at the slightest hint of rain it has snap oversteer. The best suggestion from the forums seems to be to get the estate version or a Bora as the extra weight on the rear axle will keep it in check but that's cheating and I don't want another Golf. The lap times I've seen with R32's on UA-cam are not massively quicker than I've done considering they are 4 wheel drive with more mods and a lot more horsepower, plus there's were in the dry. Mines a PD150 with a remap, a bit of front camber and toe out, 10mm rear wheel spacers, slightly uprated suspension and brakes, I was running Rainsport 3's all round but they were hopeless on a wet Snetterton track, good on wet roads though. The other Mk4 & MK5 golfs there on the day although highly modified were slower than me. The car handles perfectly fine in all conditions on the road so I'll have to throw money into more track time to solve this puzzle myself if it's even doable. Considering everyone seems to think these old 8 valve diesels are legendary and they are very affordable it's a shame nobody has a proven way to make the chassis work properly. All the Officially Gassed and LLF cars are straight line heros which don't interest me, I'm a corner man. You can use my car if you need too, it's well seviced so should be able to take plenty more abuse.

I purchased some alloys from Exmouth once, had thr guys fit them on site, got onto m5 and had extreme wheel wobble, pulled over to find the front wheels were hardly even on a thread.....sketchy

A couple I know danced Samba with a BMW 3 Cabriolet after tighten the wheels with a cheap battery drill, so I gave them a number to at BMW M3 builder that solved it...

Please (well they are a bit expensive) do a electric turbo conversion (the actual working ones :) to a "smallish" car with a "smallish" engine but it has to have a newer ECU so at least it can adjust a bit...
