I'm so fucking jealous over the car prices in the western countries. I'm gonna look up the cheapest Jimny and Xtrail in the country on the biggest car website we have. Cheapest Jimny is a 98 mechanical 0.7l with ~246k kms for ~2900 USD. Some rust on the body, engine ok, turbo is blowing, 1st gear requires some effort sometimes. For the X-Trail: cheapest is '00 auto 2.0l with ~300k km and right wheel drive for ~5500 USD. Current owner since 2014, new winter tires, recent interior dryclean, panoramic roof, "good music", whatever that means, speakers look stock, and the head unit fits, but is touch-operated and got USB and AUX jacks, so 99% not OEM.
Ah, brilliant stuff guys. Me and my Dad upgraded an ex-RAF Land-rover Lightweight when I was a teen. Fitted a Rover V8 to it. Hard cab. Winch. Mud plugging tyres and wheels plus a roll cage (please fit one if you’re serious about off-roading). Green lanes were a piece of piss. We entered competitions in disused Welsh quarries! It was unstoppable!! Was surprised one of you didn’t rock up with an old 4x4 Fiat Panda. They’re amazing off-road.
Possible for there to be a HG leak between oil and water, will result in The Sludge but nothing from the exhaust because it's not a failure into a cylinder. Far less likely to do a head gasket that way but it _is_ possible. Excited for this challenge, looks like a lot of fun! Jimny needs some tinkering but there's a LOT of potential there. X-trail isn't a bad little unit but depending what engine and those front shafts aren't very strong(!).
Jimny transfer box is easy to swap out, i picked up one for £40, also get some front manual locking hubs off a SJ410 or SJ413, straight fit. And i also had a cherry bomb exhaust on mine, that age of Jimny gets the Swift GTI engine, it can sing.
I got an 01 Xterra for $550. It's a RWD 2.4L 4 cylinder with a manual transmission, and I got it from a towyard the day before it would be crushed (no one was interested for the $1800 asking price and I contacted the guy when it was down to $1000, then talked him down to $500+$50 paperwork fee). I was essentially giving him $100 over the crush value. It's quite capable in Colorado despite not being 4WD; I've gone through 4 winters here and it hasn't gotten proper-stuck or broken down once. The KA24DE is a great and easy to service engine, even if it doesn't have much factory power (top speed is governed to 100MPH exactly). It offers the ground clearance my $900 89 Prelude Si doesn't offer, so that's my summer fun runner/project car, and the Xterra is my winter mule/also project car.
You and Taylor have really lifted off with your channel, you guys are brilliant and really mould together well, both in your individual ways! Well done lads and looking forward to your 2023 crazy adventures! 😜👍
I remember going to an off road event in a Quarry with my Land Rover SIII there was a guy there with a Fiat Panda 4x4 everyone was laughing at him but by the end of the day everyone had respect for him and the Panda. Sure it was not as capable as the the Landrovers going up hill but he threw that little car off the tops of the cliffs, he slid down not necessarily on its wheels but however he reached the bottom and drove away. It was a tough little car and did far more you would expect. I have never laughed at any small 4x4 since. But every job has the correct tool.
I've seen a Jimny pull a Landcruiser out of a massive mud pit before. On loose surfaces like snow or mud, small light cars like the Jimny can be exceptional.
This is awesome! We owned both a first gen x-trail and a jimny as well, i think simultaneously even, and have fond memories of both. A jimny is just the easiest modern car to work on, everything is simple, accessible and cheap. And I think the x-trail 2.5 was perhaps the most comfortable car I ever owned, great visibility, and easy to drive. Too bad mine had to go, cause it used one litre of fuel every 10km, and 1 litre of oil every 500km, which just cannot be a good sign for the health of the engine.
Must say, you're quickly becoming one of my favourite motoring channels. And to top it off your choice of music makes me all fuzzy inside. Cheers and merry New year!🍻🥰😂👍
I am very interested in the idea of an off-road adventure with these cars. I really enjoy good off-road adventure videos like the ones posted by mighty car mods. All the best.
The old Landrover defenders are the best vehicle in snow. I was a Police Officer and worked a rural beat in Yorkshire driving a defender. We used to pull lorries over the A628 woodhead pass with it, absolutely brilliant bit of kit.
Great work lads, especially Taylor on an absolute find there. I definitely want to see more from these, especially an overlanding challenge followed by off-road camping roadtrip?
Damn that Nissan X-Trail is perfect! All it needs is a 2 or 3 inch lift kit and that's it, it's done, don't touch it afterwards. The Jimny on the other hand... Well that just needs a skip because that's shagged worse than a stray dogs kennel
I've had two jimnys in my life and they are the toughest car you could find. They'll survive everything and I've probably fallen in love with them. The mechanical side of the jimny is so charcterfull. Also, the missfireing issue could probably be solved by changing the sparks. And my experience with transfercase is that it needs either a good knock with a hammer or a little fiddleing with wires.
I have an 04' it was misfiring because of the plugs, I changed plugs and still misfire, the issue is a lack of dielectric grease on the coil pack connection. Smear grease on that and the spark won't short to cylinder head and no more misfire. Transfer case likely has damaged solenoid or corroded wiring. Usually they get stuck in 4lo and you have to hard reverse then Jame brake to unbind the drive system.
Its so nice to see that you guys are having fun. You can just see and feel it. So much better then big UA-camrs that just do stuff for views and money!
Omg honestly i love your posts so funny and does anyone else give the video thumbs up before watching 🤣🤣👍beautiful house vents on the bonnet 🤣,and does it have a mot really, looking forward to next update on jimny and Paul 🤣

Wisconsonite here. When I was 16-17 y.o. my mother had a 98 Jeep Cherokee Sport with its Mopar Straight 6 4.0L 225h.p. with 225ft lbs of torque. Being a teen I loved it. 1 time I took it out mudding w/out my mother knowing. Didn't have permission as the folks where going to an event. So I took it out and made sure to run it through the car wash and afterwards manually washed the areas that it missed. Drove it till it drives and put it exactly where it was before pre-marking where the tires where. So they get home and not long after she asked me if I used the vehicle. I tried to play it off and she said she had something to show me to see if I can fix it. 🤣 I forgot to clean the panels between the door and the frame. They where properly caked in mud. I only wiped the driver side forgetting the rest. She said did it do well. I said yeah it was brilliant. She said great, your not using it for a month or 2.... lol I deserved that. Unfortunately later in miles it developed the death rattle hitting an odd bump or going over 25mph. Scarry. Felt like the tire was gonna fly off. Had to jack the wheel to the right to get stability back. Eventually that stopped working. Engine still ran beautifully.

@@DiscoFang The Suzuki is a proper 4wd, it's only a 2wd because the transfer case is blown, once that is fixed it's probably one of the best for offroading pound for pound with double lockers and live axles.
I had an old soft top Vitara on proper knobbly tyres with the bumpers cut mostly off and it was really good even on some quite involved off road courses.
Yes I will say it. I believe you and Taylor have the same sort of rare energy that the previous Top gear presenters have (Clarkson, May and Hammond). Obviously its unique to you two but it radiates the same unreplaceable energy we all love and almost no one in the car-show-business has.
As much as I am loving the content from you Alex. I'm beginning to feel like your buying these "project" cars and not following them up with progress. I absolutely love Taylor, he seems like a very genuine and passionate person and is a great fit for the channel. I will say that I would love to see Gareth make a return from the Project MX5 series you done on CT. Keep the videos coming, your smashing it!
There are two types of winter driving. Deep snow, in which case you'd want a taller vehicle like this. In every other winter driving condition (ice, shallower snow, partly plowed roads, etc.) a lower to the ground car would be a much wiser choice. All of the downsides of SUV's when it comes to vehicle dynamics are exacerbated in the slippery stuff. UNless you are likely to encounter snow deep enough to override your cars ground clearance, stick with the car... You don't necessarily even need AWD (though it helps). If I had to choose between AWD with all-seasons, or FWD with snow tires, I'd choose the latter every time. Of course having both is even better.
I had a rusty 1995 Grand Cherokee 4.0 with selectable 4wd. I installed a rear locker and that thing was an absolute unit while being comfortable as hell.
Love the knew purchases........paul and jimmy, why not 🤷♂️🤣 defo put money into them both, both really strong for some serious challenges, after some tlc obvs, love ya both, plz keep the content going 💪🏻💪🏻👊🏼👊🏼👍👍

There's a permit only byway in the lake District called gatescarth, it's one of, if not the longest and hardest byway in England (not including Wales). I'd love to see the two attempting to tackle it once they've been tarted up a little? The first permit day of the year for 4x4s is April 2nd.
Love this, I just got a 2005 gran vitara … all the usual kit on it and it’s so much cheap fun on pay and play days…. Idea… why don’t you sort one on the cheap and come along and see what’s best against the jimny
I say do it. Project "Jimny" sounds fun. Fix up the front diff, get the brakes working properly again, tidy up the paint, add a couple of foglights and if permits, turbocharge it and watch it eat.
The Jimny would look amazing if you made the angry eyes apart if the spare bonnet! You could even for a scooby scoop to help over heating, then take off all bumpers and just leave the arches on and paint the exposed chassis and the body all 1 colour 👌
Great stuff! 😃 I've wanted a 4x4 winter car for years! Today a RD1 CR-V was posted, it's been in a moose collision and it's got some damage including broken windshield, and it's still over £1100 😅

@@DabDabGoose No doubt. But a £750 challenge is a £750 challenge.
Loved it! Taylors Entrail I think will win however, the Jimny may punch its own weight!
love this content keep it going Alex and Taylor, you two are like the next gen clarkson and may.
Top tip: drive your car that overheats only at sub zero temperatures, then you never have to fix the thermostat!
I had an old soft top Vitara on proper knobbly tyres with the bumpers cut mostly off and it was really good even on some quite involved off road courses.
Really enjoyed watching this. Such a laugh! This channel gets better and better with each new video released. Keep it up!
Taylor smashed that! Well done son. Also Alex that jimmy deserves some love’
Brilliant video Alex.
Maybe the best you've done.
Love everything about it. ❤
I had a rusty 1995 Grand Cherokee 4.0 with selectable 4wd. I installed a rear locker and that thing was an absolute unit while being comfortable as hell.
The Jimny is good but Taylor has absolutely smashed the buying part of the competition! That's a stonking deal.
Without a doubt my favorite video you've made Alex. This is why i come to your channel (not for the bmws 😂 )
Love you guys ,move over top gear we need great guys like you 2 and happy new year
Love the knew purchases........paul and jimmy, why not 🤷♂️🤣 defo put money into them both, both really strong for some serious challenges, after some tlc obvs, love ya both, plz keep the content going 💪🏻💪🏻👊🏼👊🏼👍👍
Bravo lads, Taylor you are really coming into your own too. Both keep up the great work
Oh it's Taylor again I just watched a cheap off-road challenge from car with him Jimny is the best by the way great seeing Taylor in his Defender pulling people out in the snow that was a good laugh
Happy New Year Alex and Taylor ... content is absolutely 🔥 can't wait to see what you do in 2023.
Best duo on UA-cam doing car stuff
Keep it up boys✅
The spirit of top gear lives on, I am very appreciative of this channel!
There's a permit only byway in the lake District called gatescarth, it's one of, if not the longest and hardest byway in England (not including Wales). I'd love to see the two attempting to tackle it once they've been tarted up a little? The first permit day of the year for 4x4s is April 2nd.
Few miles from where I live. Walked up it many times.
Love this, I just got a 2005 gran vitara … all the usual kit on it and it’s so much cheap fun on pay and play days…. Idea… why don’t you sort one on the cheap and come along and see what’s best against the jimny
I like Taylor, he comes across as likeable & knowledgeable. A very rare combo.
I say do it. Project "Jimny" sounds fun.
Fix up the front diff, get the brakes working properly again, tidy up the paint, add a couple of foglights and if permits, turbocharge it and watch it eat.
Love this video! I've just bought a Jimny too, so please, plenty of Jimny videos
I’m really glad you’re going to give the Jimny some love. It’ll make a great vid and it deserves a new lease of life. Do it proud 😃
The Jimny would look amazing if you made the angry eyes apart if the spare bonnet! You could even for a scooby scoop to help over heating, then take off all bumpers and just leave the arches on and paint the exposed chassis and the body all 1 colour 👌
Loving the Jimny, AND all the spares, bloody bargain. Wow, the Nissan!
Great stuff! 😃 I've wanted a 4x4 winter car for years!
Today a RD1 CR-V was posted, it's been in a moose collision and it's got some damage including broken windshield, and it's still over £1100 😅
Hopping ur gonna work and make more upgrades on that jaguar (wish i was there ) happy new year Alex u just made my year better
