Do you have any recommendations or other sources that could help those who are working excessively long hours but still need to concentrate and stay productive Such as those who work 100 hour weeks. I was really interested in your burnout video, but a question that somewhat ties into this comment, is what advice would you give people who have to work through burnouts (Required for a job or project)
1. Refuel (get something to eat and/or drink) 2. Reset (go outside to get exposure to some light, play a game for a short while or take a power nap) 3. Refocus (external or internal motivation. Tips for external motivation: focus on one task, clear your environment and set a timer to work on that task.)
going outside for a walk and getting some sunlight exposure is the most effective method for me. then coming back i have a cup of coffee and start my work.
I got 2 guesses - banana smoothie with egg in it (I’m thinking chocolate protein powder would taste better tho). Slice up banana and hard boiled egg and make a mini sandwich using banana slices for bread?
banana = healthy sugar , Egg= Healthy protein .. they are energy sources but healthy so they can boost u to continue the day ,, and I am guessing this because I do that everyday :D
I have a tip on avoiding the afternoon slump: have a light lunch! Eating too much or too heavy at noon on my experience is the main cause of post-lunch sleepiness. I find it way easier to keep my productivity going if I eat something like a protein and a salad! Also: simple carbs makes you sleepy so I would avoid those in large quantity
I like a couple of those you mentioned at the end. 1. Use the Pomodoro technique in the afternoon when you can't focus for as long. Break things down into smaller chunks. 2. Workout in the afternoon when you hit that slump. Frees up productive morning time and energizes you for more afterwards.
Frank, you're the best! Your tips have actually helped me get through college and now medical school as well. Inspired me to start sharing my own experiences with productivity and life in general!
@Jason Smith You definitely should! I understand where you're coming from though... I didn't start for a while for similar reason but I figured theres nothing for me to lose (besides some study time lol) If you start one I'll be your first subscriber :D
Coffee doesn’t take away the tiredness, it only numbness so I think our body eventually build up too much tolerance and we don’t get numb drinking it after a while.
It really hurts when you worked like hell in school, came home, wanna spend time for yourself but you’ve just fallen asleep for hours. When you wake up, you’re tiredness won’t go away so you slept again and when you wake up, you find yourself getting ready for school again. Then you realize that you’re living inside of a school paradox where you’re life has no meaning and feel depressed.
I've been on a 3 day streak of barely sleeping, going to school coming home tired cycle And no I'm not bragging that 3 day streak, In fact I want to reset it
I've been going to the gym at school during the afternoon slump, around 3 or 4, and I feel it just skyrockets my energy and focus for when I go back to work in the evening.
Hey Thomas! Just wanted to say that I was blown away by this video's quality and I saw a great deal of improvement and attention to detail compared to your previous videos. Been a subscriber for more than 3 years now and I do appreciate your work so much. As a hobbyist in color grading, photography and filmmaking, I am truly impressed!
When I'm feeling slump I go to UA-cam and what my favorite channels and yours is one of them. I was tired and decided to watch a video and this one came first. The hard part is that it's not easy to watch only one of your videos. Thanks for everything you've been teaching me. LOVE, LIVE, LEARN n LAUGH MAC
I spent about a year trying to solve this, since i first watched this video. About a week ago, I finally discovered what works for me. As days are getting very long here in the Patagonia, i found it hard to stay sharp during the afternoons. What I do now are the following steps divided into 2 phases: In phase one, embrace the slump... this may sound counter intuitive but in my case some of the tiredness came for expecting to feel bugs crawling beneath my skin when the reality was never like that. So, i eat breakfast at around 11 in order to get the most serious work done without distractions. Between 12 and 2 I do some shallow work and maybe play around with any new program i might wanna implement or idk, climb some trees. I then have a big lunch at about 2:30 and embrace my not-wanting-to-do-anything. Phase 2 is about getting over the afternoon slump. I start with a power nap (15-20 minutes), followed by my calisthenics routine, which takes me about an hour, and finish off with an ice cold shower with energetic music blasting off the speakers. Then i change clothes. I´ve found that after doing the steps in phase 2, which take about 1:20 hours to complete, I get the bugs-crawling-beneath-my-skin sensation... oh my, its like resetting completely. I then continue to work (study) until 7 or 8 pm, when im finally depleted for real and go do the second workout of the day. Anyways I hope someone finds it useful... it´s so life changing that i came back to this video just to write this comment.
When I was in high school I used to commute home by bus at around 2-3PM. I would take a nap in the bus and then go back home from the bus stop by foot. I didn't even realise this was helping me stay awake. Now I'm trying to "emulate" that routine by power-napping and going for a short walk right after I wake up. It works wonders.
I leave home and stay a couple of hours in the library studying and finishing whatever I couldn't, for sure, do at home in the afternoon. Being in a different environment helps me concentrate. The though of "well, now that I'm here I might as well do something" and the walk to the library are helpful too.
It's very common to feel that energy dip around 3 pm, but here are the three ways Thomas suggests to combat that: 1) Refuel- grab some water or a light, healthy snack 2) Reset- go outside and get some sunlight or take a quick break or take a nap 3) Refocus- boost external motivation: clear and prepare your environment for focus, then focus on one thing for 25 mins. You can try changing up your schedule as well. I hope this helps! :)
This one hits close to home. Lived 55 years without coffee but I was crashing in the afternoon at a new workplace -- exactly as you described -- and tea wasn't doing it for me. Had to do something, but what? Coffee helped but not as much as I hoped. Thanks for the good advice.
Thomas Frank is the best creator for self-improvement. Thomas Frank inspired me so much that I started my own UA-cam channel. I would love some support from you guys.
Staying productive while we have an afternoon slump is all about willpower. You did put some nice tips to deal with it and I would add mine that are : Willpower and cafeine xD I just wanted to point out that the afternoon slump could be avoided by skipping big lunches and taking small snacks instead. As far as I know, this slump comes after we get a big lunch because, guess what, our bodies use a lot of energy to digest the food we eat.
Ooo, interesting. I’ve been studying for hours at a time after lunch these past few weeks, and the big difference I noticed is that I don’t eat big lunches anymore.
Another thing I like to do when I'm tired but know I won't wake up and feel energized is do a simple breathing exercise/yoga/meditation. Just taking 3-5 minutes to breathe in deeply and stretch a bit while just counting 1-5 while I inhale and exhale can wake me up better than caffeine if I do it intentionally - no music, close my eyes and shut out the noise. I do this when I've had a bad night's sleep too sometimes to force myself to wake up and focus. As always, great video :)
Whenever I'm tired or I can't get myself to focus, I plop myself in bed for a few minutes and get back to work. The 20 minute power nap feels like too much time, so I cut it down to at most 5 minutes. The second thing is that I'm not in a sleeping position, so I naturally get back up after those 5 minutes. I mix that up with the 5 second rule(though I do 3 seconds, since I didn't know it was actually 5 seconds). This ensures I get out of bed, and provides me a task for me to do after I take that small break to clear my mind.

I return home from work at 2 pm in the day and basically I do nothing up until 6 pm. I don’t feel energetic at the time to do something productive. I tried reading books and listening podcasts but I can’t focus. I think this video kind of gave me some ease that I’m not alone.
Im so caffeine tolerant that I can drink a monster and fall asleep just fine, I sometimes have them in the morning since I hate mornings and it helps me kickstart the day but it doesn’t like make me super hype or anything.
Literally watching this at 3 pm in the afternoon. First, it's amazing to see your video quality improving. I also really did miss you creating this sort of video game-like atmosphere in your videos. I'm definitely going to try the working out and going for walks during my afternoon slumps. Thanks for another amazing video!
The most effective step is definitely exposure to sunlight. Just go out find a bench close your eyes and directly face the sun for 15-20mins. It does wonders in terms of getting rid of that slump and de-clutter your mind.
I find this 3pm time slot is good for washing dishes and folding laundry. Spending time on mental work needs to balance with physical work of dishes and laundry.
I wish man. Fastest I ever fall asleep is like 20 minutes. And that's only if it's super late at night & I'm dead tired from a long day. Mid-day? No chance I'm falling asleep. I envy people that can nap. :'(
I faced this same problem for the last time some days ago. I was not being able to utilize my afternoon time at all. I used to lie down and fall asleep. Even though I have a very healthy diet. Then I experimented with my diet pattern a bit, and finally found success with my 2 meals a day. I don't eat anything in the afternoon. Well, if I'm too hungry I go for a little snack like a fruit, or dates, or a cup of tea, but nothing so filling. And It worked instantly.
What works for me best is taking a break from the work and stepping outside to have some sunshine, and doing the activity that I love and drinking water.
The slump is also related to how much and what was eaten for lunch. An extreme solution that I would highly recommend is to skip the lunch, work through it and take a quick walk if necessa. All your energies then go into the activity rather than the digestion and eventually you do more in less hours thanks to the enhanced focus. Trust me, it's a breeze!
I have been scrolling through the comment section for a while now...thought I was the only one thinking its pronounced that way. kudos to you, my friend. Now, I can finally go to bed :D
1. Peppermint green tea in the afternoon. 2. If you do not like tea, apply a drop of peppermint oil on your palm and sniff. 3. Grab a healthy snack apple, almonds. 4. Get up, take a quick walk. 5. If you work from home, take a cold shower. 6. Push yourself, no one is going to do the work for you.
Tom’s hotness levels are increasingly beyond infinity with every new video. Anna is one lucky duck🦆. If they bear offspring the universe will explode this cuteness.
I'm the opposite. My mind starts kicking in about 6pm. Often until 2am or later, I'm wide awake, continuously getting more energy till I force myself to sleep and stumble through the day.
this video came about the right time .. as a college student it is really important to stay focused the whole day and i find myself drinking alot of coffee
Really agree with the point regarding focus. When I’m in flow ... I do not feel tired or groggy. When I’m browsing or trying to procrastinate I feel super tired. Great vid Tom. All the best. Angus!

Much needed advice now, I am in my research lab. Can’t tackle my tiredness
really love the more relaxed, casual style of this video. good job thomas
Whooooaaaa camera quality (also i saw that bts quiz you sneaky fox)
You sweet sweet person, I'm really glad you exist and share yourself with us on youtube❤
I have found that 5 minute power naps work best for me.
5 minutes? Isn't that considered "laying in your bed"?
Ethan Reed Yeah sleeping is usually done laying in bed
@@ethanreed2672 Learn to sleep faster.
@@PowerMatrixAnime You can go to sleep under 5 mins? Man, you must be tired often...?
@@ethanreed2672 You're not alone here. I don't get it either. I guess I'm just not someone with the ability to fall asleep for only 5 minutes
What works for me best is taking a break from the work and stepping outside to have some sunshine, and doing the activity that I love and drinking water.
After you showed the whiteboard to-do list I couldn't hear anything you said over the sound of Matt D'Avella's tears. Two videos in a row - savage!!
I have been struggling with this ever since school started! This is such good timing. Thank you so much Frank!
Anyone else watching this in the morning where they are? 😂😂😅
I'm currently reading intense biochemistry for a midterm and this video really helped for my afternoon study session! Thanks Tom
“How to stop feeling tired In The afternoon” mate I’m tired from the moment I wake to the moment I sleep XD
might be adhd or chronic fatigue
Bruh...
@@dalpaengi Jokes on you! I have both!
Thomas I really want to thank you for helping me getting my life back together.
The fact that youtube is recommending this at 3pm just when I woke up from my afternoon nap shows how yt understands me lol
En-dodge-en-us is how you pronounce endogenous
I have been scrolling through the comment section for a while now...thought I was the only one thinking its pronounced that way. kudos to you, my friend. Now, I can finally go to bed :D
Same if you hadnt replied with this I would have hahaha
And capitalize dodge to let him know where the emphasis lies. Thx 😉
1. Peppermint green tea in the afternoon.
2. If you do not like tea, apply a drop of peppermint oil on your palm and sniff.
3. Grab a healthy snack apple, almonds.
4. Get up, take a quick walk.
5. If you work from home, take a cold shower.
6. Push yourself, no one is going to do the work for you.
jrtrainer thank you!
Was about to nap right when this dropped😭😂
Tom’s hotness levels are increasingly beyond infinity with every new video. Anna is one lucky duck🦆. If they bear offspring the universe will explode this cuteness.
the production quality on this one tho,
look how my big brother grew up :)
I'm the opposite. My mind starts kicking in about 6pm. Often until 2am or later, I'm wide awake, continuously getting more energy till I force myself to sleep and stumble through the day.
Lol this is exactly how I feel right now. How'd you know? Haha love the video Thomas thanks.
this video came about the right time .. as a college student it is really important to stay focused the whole day and i find myself drinking alot of coffee
I only feel tired in the morning but always feel energetic in the afternoon. Who's the same.
Really agree with the point regarding focus. When I’m in flow ... I do not feel tired or groggy. When I’m browsing or trying to procrastinate I feel super tired. Great vid Tom.
All the best.
Angus!
