    Ariel is one of those few players who truly got it. Everything he plays is exactly on point. He’s gotten to a point where he can’t play anything bad. He’s just better and more clever than the rest of us. Period.

      brother matt - as i get older, i understand less and less why people lean so heavily on comparing to give their own opinions weight. i'll never forget a time when i was falling into doing just that when a wise friend simply said 'its not a competition" . to add to that, i find those who insist on it being one have lost the plot right out of the gate. i am not an advanced player, but i get such a great personal satisfaction from playing every night, getting better happens without care. plus my kids think it sounds good so win/win.

      @@mattbortz10 are they boxing? Or wrestling? Why is he getting destroyed? And he is easily on the same level as Derek trucks. I like to imagine it as a sort of garden of Eden of guitarist, one you get good enough you’re in and everyone is just jamming.

    • @goodun2974
      @goodun2974 3 роки тому +1

      TL, he's tuning *down* (not up!) to open C, and so you'd need some heavy strings to prevent buzzing and weird noises from strings hitting the frets. Otherwise, with lighter, more normal string sets, tune up to open E (assuming you have a guitar that can safely handle the tension) and you *might* be able to get a clean slide tone. A Gibson type bridge is helpful because you can easily raise the height of all 6 strings at once.
      PS, Open E might be kinda rough on a fragile or valuable acoustic guitar; try slightly heavier strings and tune down to open D (DADF#AD) or open G (DGDGBD). Dobro or lap-steel G tuning, GBDGBD, is a whole 'nother thing, tons of string tension there!

    Using his thumb to mute the other strings while picking is genius. I'm going to try that.

  • @jebmcgovern3744
    @jebmcgovern3744 6 років тому +4

    This is day three of slide lesson. Day one is how to always mute the strings with your playing hand. It took me ten years to isolate individual strings just cause I tried to strum, pluck as I do with out slide. Pluck one string at a time, muting the others with your remaining fingers, then watch this video and have a blast.

    • @larrygeetar9309
      @larrygeetar9309 6 років тому

      Muting is not the first, most important thing. Learning how to play a note
      (or notes) in tune is first. Muting is one of many techniques that enhance
      slide/bottleneck guitar. Correct intonation and learning where to fret
      those notes in order to do that comes first and foremost. That and just
      figuring out how to make a note -any note - and how the slide works. It's
      a totally different animal than how you play fretted notes.

    Monster tone and soulful playing my friend! What string gauge are you using with the strat in standard tunning? They sound heavier than 13 thorough 56 set. If so, how high from the fretboard are they? Thank you for your kind sharing.

    Great player. Had a thought...What would slide on flatwounds sound like?

    • @r.parker1933
      @r.parker1933 5 років тому

      It's less raspy or gritty on the wound strings. A smoother sound. I guess a fair comparison might be to say if you play a brass slide then a glass one on the unwound strings, it's a little like that when you go from round wound to flat wound (with the same slide). There's no real change in the unwound strings, of course.
      I tried flat wounds but ended up preferring tr he slightly raspier sound of a glazed ceramic slide on round wound strings. It's all personal preference.

      Sub Prime you do realise that he does a whole section of the video with his Suhr in standard tuning? But most of they great slide players play (or played) in opening tunings, so it would have been more unusual if this great guitar player didn’t use open tunings when playing slide.

    He's just showing off without telling you how he acheives each sound. For example pressing the string with a finger behind the slide to get an extra note. He plays it, but doesn't tell you what he is doing!
