Did we just become bandmates? Yep! You guys really sound great together. His tone is ridiculous and his understanding of the vocal nature of the slide is spot on.
I'm fascinated by people that are great at playing slide. Its such an emotive way to play. When I try I sound terrible. I feel inspired to work at it though after watching this.
Tyler, this is by far my favourite video you’ve posted on your channel. Mike’s playing is phenomenal, his story is inspiring, and I loved your jams together 👌
Fascinating. I swear there are times he truly sounds to me like Ann Wilson from Heart. Seriously. I’ve never heard a slide player play like that. Just amazing.
I don't know if Tyler will see this, but what guitar is Mike playing? It's like a Jaguar and a Les Paul in one guitar; if it's mentioned later in the video, just ignore. Lol I just fell in love with the thing at first sight.
So sick... I almost couldn't make it to the end of the video... I wanted to jump and grab my slide (across the room for some reason). Truly inspirational.
Hey Tyler, listening to your playing on this vid... it seemed like your jam with Mike really pushed your playing sideways a bit into a really cool territory.. Nice
When you do these interviews with slide players, please ask them which tuning they use mostly or prefer. Especially what tuning they're using during the video. Thanks
Two questions I wanted asked: Is he tuned to an open tuning? I am not very good. I can't tell by just looking at what he's playing. Does the slide wear out the strings faster?
What's this guy's name Mike what? Cause I'm a big big slide fan and that's probably the best I've ever heard it along with Ariel. Where can I find his music that's not Instagram?
Do you by any chance have a list of guitar pedals you think do the coolest things? Not just weird unique stuff, but stuff that's actually good and makes useable but irregular sounds in regular song writing / guitar playing? Cheers.
Hey Tyler, you should get specialists like this and throw some curve balls at them. For instance in this situation... i love the sound of slide but it always gets used in country and bluesy stuff. How about we see him attack some metal ;) That genesis sounding power pop jam in the middle of the vid was sweet!
I love slide but like alot of guitarist I don't use it much so I'm just wondering. Since he's in a open tuning? Isn't he only able to play in a couple different keys? Pretty sure I know the answer so just curious. Thanks, great show 👍
I’ve played with Mike for the last 4-5 years at least once a week. And we have played every key, every chord, every whatever. Don’t think the open tuning holds him back.
Matching pitches, sine waves are pure pitches, mathematically accurate, no overtones, etc. They sound like an old phone, or the nakedest synthesizer. Sort of like how Tyler called them a pitch metronome-- nothing fancy, ultra consistent, perfectly A440 for eternity (or whatever pitch theyre set to.) You learn to go to the pitch and use your ears and adjust to match. Like he said, a sitar player will drill so that their body goes to the pitch on the board, every time, and work to bend around it for the desired expression. Probably not alot of "fun" but a great way to be disciplined and really dial yourself in sonically and physically.
For those asking, Mike is in open E tuning, I should’ve included that 🎶
Open E! Got it, thank you!
THIS was an amazing post! You both were on FIRE!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great. Now I can play like him.
EDIT: That didn't work.
John Mayer and Marcus King are two other guitar players that emulate singers.
Having the ability to sound like a 50s gospel singer belting it out is something I think all of us wished we could do on guitar
- John Mayer
Mp Gannon deserves way more attention than he gets. I've been following him for a long time and he always amazes.
Why? We already HAVE Derek.I don't get it it ,at all.
Perfect example of what it should be, when we sit down with other players... I bet this was so much fun to make.
Me too! Now where'd I put that slide?
I think you two should make an album together. You guys are like electric dynamite!
YES MP Gannon is wayyy underrated! So glad he's getting this much needed attention
Tyler, this is by far my favourite video you’ve posted on your channel. Mike’s playing is phenomenal, his story is inspiring, and I loved your jams together 👌
I love the fact that you included a Slide player in your videos..amazing playing by this guy!
Maybe it's weird, but the sounds coming out of his guitar are making me feel emotional. Beautiful stuff.
Yes, you're allowed to feel emotional when listening to music
As a fellow slide player and Derek trucks fan I know how hard it is not to bite on his style. He’s got it down though. Great playing
Fascinating. I swear there are times he truly sounds to me like Ann Wilson from Heart. Seriously. I’ve never heard a slide player play like that. Just amazing.
Love Ann, thanks!
What a pleasure it must be to sit around and play together like that! Beautiful!
That opening jam was choice!
I literally had to pause the video and listen to that opening lick over and over to wrap my mind around how insanely cool it was. Great video.
He’s got that slide figured out pretty well. Awesome.
Pitchmeeting is so legit. I just discovered it a few months ago. So much talent.
Don’t think I have had my mouth open in awe during a UA-cam video before. What a talent
He is not a guitar player. He is a vocalist that sings through his fingers 🤘🏻Absolutely MASTERFUL
The hilarious part is, Mike is also one of the greatest vocalists you’ll hear today. The dude has an absolutely incredible singing voice.
That intro was absolute fire on both of your parts.
This is the best opening to an UA-cam video! loved it. Also that glass(?) guitar? sweet!
Love the spotlight on a slide player.
This is the most insane sound I've ever heard, including how freaking cool his modified jag sound and the slide tone😃
YES! So glad you're sharing his amazing playing. He's soooooo good. It's no fair.
Can we get albums of just these jam sessions.
SOOOO GOOOOD!
So good and such a nice surprise to see him as a guest. Been following him for a while and wondered how he’s rarely talked about
Y'all sound amazing
Slide guitar has always sounded cool to me. This is what I thought I sounded like the first time I took a beer bottle to my strings in high school.
Wow, that guy is amazing, memorable is a good word for his playing.
Slide + sustain pickup👌
This is an incredible video, one of the best slide players I've seen. It's great to get insight into his playing.
Y’all need to make an album together!!!! You both sound so good, and really play off of each other’s musicality well. 🤘🎸🤘
Oh man, pure, soulful music. Outstanding.
The sound on the glass guitar is awesome in this episode!
I don't know if Tyler will see this, but what guitar is Mike playing? It's like a Jaguar and a Les Paul in one guitar; if it's mentioned later in the video, just ignore. Lol I just fell in love with the thing at first sight.
Mike took a warmoth Gibson style neck and Frankensteined it onto that jaguar body himself. He’s quite the tinkerer
So sick... I almost couldn't make it to the end of the video... I wanted to jump and grab my slide (across the room for some reason). Truly inspirational.
It's hard not to admire someone who can make a guitar sing that way.
I always find player interaction like this fascinating.
Nice show Tyler!
Mike is one of my favourite guitar players
Something magical happened in that intro also both of you have cool guitars
Tyler, your tone is money. That glass guitar.
Oh MAN!!! That was awesome. Thanks guys!
wow!
8:39 Damn! That was an amazing lick!
Amazing slide player! Really does sound like soulful singing!
pls make an updated guitar collection video
Nothing short of brilliant! Wow!
That is simply fkn spectacular! I love me some slide.
Love your music Man
Thanks for the passion.
🙏
Great seeing the Morningstar out again!
Mike is amazing
I mean DAYUMN! Some nasty jams - loved it!!
Just watched this and the JJN one. Love this new format. Would love to see it with Matteo and Tim Henson.
Hey Tyler, listening to your playing on this vid... it seemed like your jam with Mike really pushed your playing sideways a bit into a really cool territory.. Nice
“It’s really a listening exercise”
There it is.
Loveeeee Mike Gannon. Soooo good
For real, though, two proper maestros! So when is the Rock/Blues/Gospel/Outaw Country album coming?
Co-founder of pitch meeting? His slide playing is super easy, barely inconvenienced
His haters had better get off his back real quick
I loved my glass slide, right up until I dropped it before the gig.
I had a backup, but it's steel.
The glass is, was, definitely smoother.
Incredible jams. Also, that glass guitar sound is smooth as, uh, dad joke.
HELL YES!!
For anyone interested in getting into the deeper history of this style, look up "Sacred Steel" or "AJ Ghent"
AJ is great, but his dad Aubrey is actually the first one I listened to a lot
Tyler! Did you just not install the arms on your chair? Been looking for a model with flip up arms but didn't look like they have one.
When you do these interviews with slide players, please ask them which tuning they use mostly or prefer. Especially what tuning they're using during the video. Thanks
Open E
Two questions I wanted asked:
Is he tuned to an open tuning? I am not very good. I can't tell by just looking at what he's playing.
Does the slide wear out the strings faster?
Cool and interesting video. Thanks!
That was amazing ❤❤❤❤
What strings does he use/recommend for slide?
He play amazing solo with tomo fujita during kyoto live
I’d love to hear him cover Great Gig in the Sky
What's this guy's name Mike what?
Cause I'm a big big slide fan and that's probably the best I've ever heard it along with Ariel.
Where can I find his music that's not Instagram?

What guitar is Mike playing? looks like a gibson neck on a jag
Plus the dual covered humbuckers
Does anyone know the song at 21:50
Hey Tyler, you should get specialists like this and throw some curve balls at them. For instance in this situation... i love the sound of slide but it always gets used in country and bluesy stuff. How about we see him attack some metal ;)
That genesis sounding power pop jam in the middle of the vid was sweet!
I really want to see you interview Ned Evett.
I want to play like this dude
Tyler, have you changed your name to "Singrin" with that glass guitar...
Some lovely traded lines in the middle there.
@@SooHungry yeah I wasn't sure. I didn't think so but thanks for responding. Great Show 👍
Cool
Can you explain playing over sine waves
Matching pitches, sine waves are pure pitches, mathematically accurate, no overtones, etc. They sound like an old phone, or the nakedest synthesizer. Sort of like how Tyler called them a pitch metronome-- nothing fancy, ultra consistent, perfectly A440 for eternity (or whatever pitch theyre set to.) @@mykhedelic6471^^correct
Is he playing in a standard tuning?
nice
Allow me to add a couple of gentlemen who didn’t get a mention in this video: Sonny Landreth and Taj Mahal.
Guess I didn’t realize you attenuate a combo amp 🤔 without modifying anyway
Wwwhoah killer you guys 😮 right make it sing 😂 ...how heavy is that glass axe it's coooool???thanks to all 😂☮️😎
I'm using glass from a fuel filter that my dead drummer gave me.
RIP Stormy Z.
Jaguars actually look sick with a gibson neck
Can he do it as good in standard tuning?
As long as I stay on one string at a time :)
The Rob Scallon method of interviewing. Talk a bit, jam together, and repeat until done.
Derek Trucks is the king.
Okay now I want to see Tim Henson play slide guitar lol
This sounds so much like Indian Classical Music
You seem to have changed tack by getting guests in now. Glass guitar is flash.
some Theo Von meets Drew Smithers action
Another video on slide without any mention of Foghat.
Wait - didn't you have a flying v glass guitar? Trade in?
😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
