      I asked him two questions at a clinic in Winnipeg about a year ago now, and between the fairly simple questions I asked, I think he spent 20 to 30 minutes answering. Hard not to cheer for a guy like that. Even harder once you've heard him play live. Wow.

    • @sjcdemosnstuff7972
      @sjcdemosnstuff7972 5 років тому

      Matt Flickinger find a slide that is comfortable, not too heavy but not too light, will help to keep string noise down and help you get used to the right feel for it. Just like with standard picking, learning to mute the strings you aren't playing helps to keep the licks clean as well

    Alright so a fellow slide guitarist here and bouncing back n fourth in terms of string gauges.. right now I use D'idarrio balanced tension strings the heaviest they will start at is 11 and the heaviest string is a 50 but due to my finger strength I have reduced the 50 to a 42 for the low E from the same set. Both of my necks are properly adjusted and all of my guitars are in open E all day everyday so there is no going back n fourth to toy with tension on the neck. In short is this ideal for slide guitar in open E?

    • @mattmanley7118
      @mattmanley7118 5 років тому

      I use 11 gauge strings but no matter what I do my bottom strings bottom out because the action is still too low near the nut on my guitars... one is even shimmed up with a bit of card and still my low E string will not ring out properly. Should I just bite the bullet and have someone craft new guitar nuts for both my guitars?

    • @mattmanley7118
      @mattmanley7118 5 років тому

      I fret out heavily on the low strings despite having a brass slide they still wont ring out and sound god awful. My action is about as high as it can go without the expensive option of getting new guitar nuts made or bought. Very frustrating

    • @CNCTEMATIC
      @CNCTEMATIC 5 років тому +1

      Have you tried just adding a bit more neck relief using the truss rod? It would have the effect of raising all strings.
      If I were you I would take my guitars to a decent tech and ask them to take a look. Most won't charge for having a look at the guitar to say what can/should be done, some might even turn the truss a little for you for free, but at least you'll know what you're looking at. From what you say - treble strings good but bass fretting out - it could well be a twisted neck, the forces on any guitar neck tend to twist them that way, especially old style single truss rod ones. If you look down the neck and see slightly (or any) more bow on the treble side than the bass that's what it is. That is a pain to fix (it can only be compensated for, really). But bottom line, get it looked at and get more info. An issue with the shape of the fretboard could mean you're wasting money on a new nut.

    • @mattmanley7118
      @mattmanley7118 5 років тому

      theres no way its my necks I have had techs adjust the truss rod and its straight. I have done adjustments 3 times.

    • @CNCTEMATIC
      @CNCTEMATIC 5 років тому +1

      Fair enough, just a thought. What did the techs say about the nut? From what you say, with the problem being up near the nut, it sounds like that could be it.

    for me going up another gauge of string would be grueling for my right hand. I should mention I use a brass slide so the natural weight of the brass adds the pressure I dont have in my hand to consistently keep pressure on the strings without me having to dig into the guitar too much.

    I waited 20+ years to get properly into pedals. Spent most of my playing life with either no pedals or one analog rack reverb/delay. Would sit on top of my old tube combo, the rack had a little spring inside! Delay, 300ms delay time, no subdivisions or tap. Amp gain, two channels, ride the volume & tone pot, split coils - done.
