    It's so wild that you're basically the only one exploring how far you can push Sony Picture Profiles for these film simulation purposes while everyone is still fawning over Fujis (which are great, but again it's crazy that no other major content creators who focus on Sony don't touch on this at all)

      Still kept the camera in a bag of rice, in the sun for 1-2 weeks to make sure it dries out completely, and 2 years later it's still working like nothing happened. I was so lucky. Not going to sell this camera ever, lol

    Dear friend, after watching your videos, I bought the pdf and find your simulations super inspiring. I am currently trying fuji 400, portra 400, velvia, nostalgic negative, fortin 50, t-max 100 and acrox xr. In any case, it would tremendously help if for each recipe (in the pdf) you aggregate the knowledge you transmit on the videos: 1. recommended usage (portrait, landscape, street photography,, etc., 2.), 2. Further technical recommendations as exposure or other shooting tips, 3. More image examples of your own portfolio (or you could source them from us) 4. Installation suggestions for sony (the memory slots video saved my day). This way, in one single resource we would have the complete information. Thanks a lot and keep the good work.

    • @veresdenialex
      @veresdenialex  7 місяців тому +2

      Hei, thanks for your suggestions! Feedback is always very much appreciated!
      To answer your questions, I would do that, but people tend to limit themselves very much to suggested settings only.
      During my time working on this project, I noticed people take settings or guidance very strictly and will not wander away from suggestions. So for example, if I say a particular film simulation works well on portraits, they would only use that film recipe on portraits. They won't try it nighttime, or for landscape or anything else. They will use it exactly per my recommendation, and nothing more.
      This is the moment when creativity dies. This is against my purpose, since with this project I aim to free people of color grading and ignite their creativity.
      That's why I showcased each film recipe in the PDF and I am creating Blog posts to showcase each. People can check for themselves what colors you are actually getting with each recipe, and choose for themselves in what context they might like to use it. You can check the Blog Here www.veresdenialex.com/sony-film-simulation-blog
      I personally enjoy very much a dark grungy style, and unconventionally I could use Vektro 100 or even Fortia 50 for portraits, street photography, landscape, and more, but some other people might not, and they might label my recommendations as bad.
      This will only leave them with a negative experience and limit their creativity on what film recipe to use when.
      If you check up any single genre of photography like fashion for example, there are infinite styles, so in that logic, any film simulations can be used in any condition you seem fit to materialize your vision.
      It's more about the mood you want for your project than the genre.
      Each has a different perspective on how a portrait film simulations should look like. It's your vision that gives life to the image, that sews everything together into a cohesive story.
      In the end, it all boils down to your personal style and how you want to depict the subject to convey a certain emotion, because cinema is a visual language.
      Same with exposure. Like explained in this video, Exposure is not a fixed thing. It depends on how you want to illustrate the subject, what kind of mood you want, and what details are important to showcase in the whole scene. Should you underexpose should you overexpose?
      Exposure is a skill that needs to adapt to each individual situation. If you really need a general guide, I would say underexposing by half a stop (0.5) would be a good place to start, but again, it all depends on the image.
      Trust your eyes and your gut, and you will develop your own style.

    many tips and tricks and also I've already thought of a new trick I think and it's got to do with holding the card in front of the scene, as I believe if you want the opposite hold up a card of the same colour and then the camera should overcompensate for that correct?

      @veresdenialex  5 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, the camera will try to compensate with the complementary colors, so you can get values bellow 2500k or above 9900K, which normally you wouldn't be able to choose manually. That's how I initially created the Cinestill film simulation.

      I found the EVF to be more accurate than the screen to be honest, but the process of creating the profiles is always back n forth, so when creating the profiles, I'll make the film simulation, shoot a sample footage then transfer them on the desktop to check on the big screen for accuracy, making notes, applying adjustments and retaking the steps until I get it to the desired look. hopes this answer your questions

      @veresdenialex  Рік тому +2

      If you don't mind, I will copy paste a comment I just made to a similar question on another video.
      Basically, the Settings are Daylight Balanced, but you can adjust them to your own scene for consistency in colors.
      Compared to real film , which cannot be adjusted on the spot, digital offers versatility. The settings presented are a starting point and you should definitely then according to your scene.
      I do it like this:
      Input your color settings and from there I mostly adjust the kelvin, but if the image comes out too magenta or too green I go into the color filter and start pushing it in the opposite direction to balance out colors. Be gentle, don't push it too much because it will create a predominant shift in the overall image. You need to gently massage it.
      And yes, the other settings are color variations for the same recipe. And the reason is because real film is volatile, depending on the way it was preserved, the way it was developed, choice of lenses, or how much it was exposed to air you will get different color variations.
      that why you will get different results by shooting the same film. Sometimes greener, sometimes more on the orange side
      When creating these film recipes I wanted to incorporate as many of these color variations, so I prepared multiple color settings so the user has options to choose from, and maybe get closer to how they remember images coming out of that film roll.
      Hope this made sense, let me know if you have any other questions

    The Sony color film simulation chart that you made Is that for the Color/temp filter ( A1G1 ) adjustment?

    • @veresdenialex
      @veresdenialex  Рік тому +4

      That chart is a simple guide made to help you identify individual characteristics of Sony Film Simulations, so to say, helps you decide which film simulation you might want to use on a particular day if you are overwhelmed of the multitude of choices.
      For example: Let's say you generally would like a saturated but soft image, follow the chart and you'll see that the relevant filmsimulations of your choice would be Ektachrome, DreamNeg, CineChrome or Portra 800
      If you into something more crunchy but desaturated, you have the Kodak Ultra Max400, Ektar100, Classic Negative, Oktar and so on.
      So the chart will show you which sony film simulations are the more saturated, less saturated, softer or harder in terms of contrast, so you can easily skip all the testing of profiles, by narrowing down the options.

The ones that if you activate them, the PP profiles become locked. Just curious of results between PP vs the CL within the sony in regards to tweaking for film simulations. Excellent find tho! • @veresdenialex
      @veresdenialex  Рік тому +4

      The New Creative Looks definitely has a clear advantage to the older Creative Styles Menu present in past sony cameras, but the picture profile menu still has the upper hand with multiple color modes, color depth control, and more refined shadows adjustments. I just wish we could add grain and lower down the sharpness even more.
      The Creative Looks will definitely do a great job and it's lovely to see so many options in the newer models, but it will work similar to the Fuji film simulations, which is based more on contrast, saturation and sharpness, without the grain effects fuji has, besides other.
      So that is very nice, but still Picture profiles will offer more refined color reproduction.

    Hi, I bought your film simulation recipes. Do I have to set the colour temp and filter for each profile in order to get a close result? I am unable to save the colour temp as a preset so I don''t want to change these everytime I decide to change a colour profile.

      Both, but in photo mode it will be baked in the jpeg files only. The raw files needs color matching in post or you can use the Lightroom/CaptureOne presets I've prepared on the website store to esily match the film simulations

    Hi! 😊
    I was wondering, when you export the pictures you took with your picture profiles, do you have to do any post-processing to get those colors? I've tried some, and loved how the pictures looked from my camera's monitor, but when I transferred to my computer or phone, the colors just weren't translating. They came out darker and duller so I'm confused, maybe I missed something?
    I do have selected the raw + jpeg thingy, and the brightness of my monitor is set to 0..
    I tried looking it up on forums and saw other people having similar issues but the only solution they offered was to edit in lightroom..
    Aight I got to the part of the video talking about screens xD But is it just the brightness? In my case they look so much more colorful in the camera screen, not just brighter :0
    See, I'm more used to my point and shoot cams, but I immediately fell in love with your videos and what you do so I wanted to try your picture profiles on the a6300 to get the pretty film look ❤
    Thanks for all!

      Hei loving your comment, it's very ellaborate and includes really good points.
      I prepared a Blog and a Instagram Page where I feature images straight out of camera, without any edit, so you can check those out for reference @sony.film.simulations
      On the blog I started showcasing each Sony Film Simulation with straight out of camera jpegs so you can see exactly what kind of colors you can get without editing. I think it's a matter of understanding how to expose and use the temperature to push colors tones in different directions, you don't have to edit your shots unless you want to.
      www.veresdenialex.com/sony-film-simulation-blog
      Sony screens have a different way of rendering colors than our regular monitors. I also find the exposure saturation and colors to be different than what is presented on camera.
      For accurate reference, I use my viewfinder because it seems to have more accurate colors and contrast compared to the monitor.
      I am not sure what type of screens sony is using for their cameras, haven't yet found out why the colors and exposure are different than what we get on screen, it might also be influenced of the color space it works in.
      What forum are you referring to? Can you leave a link to it? Would love to join and read the issues people are having, it would help me create videos on different topics.
      I am currently working on a video explaining differences on picture profiles and how to create your own film simulation.
      If you send over the link to th3 forums where people speak their mind about issues with film simulations, i will include the answers to those questions in the video

      @@veresdenialex Hi again! Thanks for the reply 😊
      I'll try that with my viewfinder too, see if it makes a difference when shooting next time, Thanks!!
      It'd be great if I can get those colors too without editing, like you said. I loved what Fujifilm did with the film recipes but can't afford to buy one atm, so when I was looking for alternatives I found your film simulations for sony, my lifesaver 😆
      As for the forums, don't know if it'll be of any help but here, I looked it up on google and found these old forum posts from the DPReview site (Which, sadly, is closing very soon 🥲)
      ( I also wanna add, as far as I read, they didn't use film simulations, but some did use picture profiles so I guess the problems they had are kinda the same)
      Link here, there's a bunch of posts I scrolled through:
      www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4096644
      Another one about the viewfinder:
      www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4608707

      Most welcome! what limitations you referring to?
      the only limitations i can think of, are the increased grain and noise, but honestly for daytime, everything should be just fine. i was thinking of buying a smaller sony camera for my street photography, so the rx100 or the new zv line seems very attractive to me. don't care about the sensor size for that matter

      @@hiddengato yeah, was thinking of buying a small compact sony camera to showcase the film simulations. Bought the zv 1f, but I just realized it's not shooting raw, which is so frustrating.
      Every camera that i know of, released in the past 10- 15 years can shoot raw+jpeg. It's probably the most basic feature you can get in any camera.
      Very dissapointed.
      I kinda like the zv 1f, but i'm really considering returning it because it's lacking a lot of features like metal construction, weather sealing, very important for me, no sensor stabilization? No phase autofocus, only contrast (They also took that out, wtf?)
      Sony has no camera model focused for the leisure photographer. People that want a small compact camera with nice design, made out of sturdy materials and with weather sealing, so you don't shit your pants afraid your camera will be affected if it's a little bit rainy.
      Too focused on the professional part, which is great, but as a sony user i would love to be able to buy a camera from them and not look for alternative brands.
