Hi Alex, I had a few questions in looking to buy the film simulations: 1. Whats the difference between getting the film simulations pdf vs getting the lightroom presets ? ( any advantages of one over the other, except for the obvious that picture profile pdf will allow me to see the effects in camera while shooting 2. Would the presets work on a Nikon D750 / sony A6000 (since nikon colors are usually toward the green side by default even in RAW) ( I aim to buy a sony A7C2, but for now I have these 2 cameras at hand ) 3. What would be the difference in getting the lifetime access vs getting the picture profile pack and simulations separately ? I've been searching for potra film simulations for sony for long ! Thanks a lot for doing this. Looking forward to your response to make my purchase !
Hello Alamini! 1. The pdf recipes are in camera settings for great jpegs out of camera, while the presets were created specifically to match the raw files to the jpgs. There are 51 sony film simulations at the moment, and the preset pack includes 102 presets. The first preset is always a true replica after the sony film simulation recipe, meant to cut down the color matching process for the RAW files. The second preset will bring you closer to the real film stock, since in camera we have limited tool to tweak colors, I designed the next one to replicate the real film stock more accurately by using all the tools of Lightroom & Capture One. 2. You can use the presets with other camera brands, but it won't look 100% like the sony. Each camera has a different color science, and also, the in-camera settings also affect the raws to a certain degree, it will just look different from the sony a6500, but it will definitely give your D750 a film look. 3. Lifetime access is just my promise of getting lifetime updates, it does not include both the pdf and presets, you still need to add them seperatelly to your shopping cart since they are individual products, and whenever I bring an update you will receive it through email. That is lifetime access.
@@veresdenialex Thanks for the reply Alex ! Went ahead and bought the preset pack. Can't wait to try it out ! Looking forward to video LUTS with the portra effect ( if you're working on that )
I just bought the recipes but i’m still confused with something: on the website you put the color temperature and filters. But I don’t understand if you are implying that we should always use that color temperature everytime. I’m a little confused if you designed them specifically to always be used at those color K. And the multiple filters is for us to choose one that we think looks better? Thanks for the info and congrats for the looks!
Basically, the Settings are Daylight Balanced, but you can adjust them to your own scene for consistency in colors. Compared to real film , which cannot be adjusted on the spot, digital offers versatility. The settings presented are a starting point and you should definitely then according to your scene. I do it like this: Input your color settings and from there I mostly adjust the kelvin, but if the image comes out too magenta or too green I go into the color filter and start pushing it in the opposite direction to balance out colors. Be gentle, don't push it too much because it will create a predominant shift in the overall image. You need to gently massage it. And yes, the other settings are color variations for the same recipe. And the reason is because real film is volatile, depending on the way it was preserved, the way it was developed, choice of lenses, or how much it was exposed to air you will get different color variations. that why you will get different results by shooting the same film. Sometimes greener, sometimes more on the orange side When creating these film recipes I wanted to incorporate as many of these color variations, so I prepared multiple color settings so the user has options to choose from, and maybe get closer to how they remember images coming out of that film roll. Hope this made sense, let me know if you have any other questions
How about the handling of color profiles, aka film simulations? Can you process raw images in-camera to try out different color profiles on the same raw image?
the most amazing video ever!!! can you please recommend settings for getting broadcast quality or sony zeiss camcorder like footage? it would so helpful. i generally shoot documentary, sports or wedding live events and for that i needed a setting that would resemble a professional camcorder footage. thanks...

Excellent video. One question: can I create my own picture profile with rich colors without using a color filter? Was there a color filter on the camera you used to record this video? Thanks. Excellent video
Would you define rich as deep and slightly saturated? so maybe you are looking into high Color Depth values and a slight increase in saturation. You can only use the picture profile menu for that, but the Kelvin and color filters are helping a lot remapping/shifting colors. I used the Portra 800 film simulation to record this video and color graded it afterwards to push the colors even further
Ok I have a few questions about these film simulations for Sony. Until now I've just shot RAW and edited each image. I also do a little bit of video and have mostly been using the Cinetone picture profile. I've read that with picture profiles you have two base ISO where noise is minimal. Since your simulations make use of picture profile are they based on just one type of profile (slog, hlg etc). I'm assuming these simulations can be used for video as well and I'm curious about base ISO. I don't use slog for instance, partly because I don't want to color grade video but also because the base ISO of 800 is too high for the shutter speed and ND filters I use.
My film simulations use variety of Gammas (still, movie, cine, hlg & s-log) so the base iso's vary, and also each camera model has different base iso's
Sir, What camera would you suggest if I want to shoot film simulations pictures/videos of myself only for Instagram , Sony zve10, Sony Zv1 or Sony Zv1 f??
I have a question. I just started using these recipes. They are great. But I don’t know whether it is necessary to set the camera ISO to match the film’s original ISO. Can you please advise
We need the Color Temperaturen and Color Filters to achieve the Look. But it seems These Settings are for daylight? What about tungsten light - how to accuratly adjust to other Color Ambients?
you substract the difference. For example Daylight is 5500K, Tungsten is 2900-3200 K. there is roughly a 2500K difference which you will substract from the initial recipe in order to calibrate yur daytime recipe t tungsten. Then use the colro filter to adjust tint.
By the way, do you see it feasible to create the recipe for the Kodachrome color in a camera? in that case! I certainly think it would be incredible to try. Thank you and again congratulations on the project
Canon (with Canon Picture Style), Nikon (with Nikon Picture Control Editor) and Fujifilm (with Fujifilm X-Raw) can create picture color profile in their PC softwares. I'm wondering if Sony's PC software can do this? Thank you!
You can find free recipes in this playlist. These are the old versions, since then I've brough updates to the recipes which can be found in the pdf document ua-cam.com/play/PL-gfcmjtW3ntpsFhkYXC7KRQSOf2ujuCX.html&si=qHGn1kbf0_Eu5Wna
Glad you found it helpful! When I first started experimenting with picture profiles, there was little to no documentation available. Sony had some vague descriptions for each, but nothing much. So I had to experiment and see on my own how each option affects the image and how to leverage them to get the best colors out of the box. Now Sony provides a slightly more detailed documentation right here helpguide.sony.net/di/pp/v1/en/contents/TP0000909106.html Roughly after 1 year I came with my first 8 film simulations which can be found here ua-cam.com/video/SZDaH3k6BUw/v-deo.html and now after 2-3 years we have 51 film simulation for Sony cameras that I feel makes the shooting experience much more enjoyable, by offering more interesting colors and contrast without the need of any post processing
I am trying this but the settings do not save to the profiles… I am new but I didn’t see this on the video or the PDF, how can I avoid having to reconfigure every time I want to use a filter?
The Kelvin and Color Filter settings are not saved into the picture profile menu, only the picture profile settings, but there is a workaround. Use the memory recall mode to save and quickly load film simulations. Check the workflow here ua-cam.com/play/PL-gfcmjtW3nup_6nXvu8JTn3obVpU2-o-.html&si=39vXrlWuN9M6N2cY
I didn't even know my camera could do all this. You showed me a whole new world. Is there a possibility to have more than 9 picture profiles? It seems like too much work to tweak all those settings once you have more than 9 custom picture profiles. Or is there atleas a faster way to set all those settings i.e. somehow saving and applying those saved picture profiles? EDIT: Memory recall feature is probably a good workaround
Check this playlist for the basic workflow, I found a workaround method using the Memory Recall mode. ua-cam.com/play/PL-gfcmjtW3nup_6nXvu8JTn3obVpU2-o-.html&si=QAtI91rTDWLFkiYJ

At lunch and dinner. Basically I just need your expert view on which preset is suitable and which Kelvin to set the wb for indoor daylight and indoor night time tungsten and I'll use it right away. Since I'm color blind I don't want to tinker with the Kelvin or color anymore than what I need to, that's why I want to buy your preset. Please advise and thank you in advance
It's pretty hard to recommend a film recipe, since I don't know what colors you like, or the mood you are going for. Also, it's hard to recommend a temperature for indoor situations since I have no idea what light you have in the house. You can contact me through the chatbox www.veresdenialex.com/ and we can speak there more details. If you have any references of the colors you'd like for your shots, that would be very helpful for me.

I know a LOT of people think PPs don't affect the RAW photos, but they actually do. If you do a test and push saturation you will notice there is a difference. I notice this when I started shooting picures in Cinetone, and picures feel more soft and colors seemed a bit more cinematic. Though this is just in my mind, but after doing a test in a control enviroment, turns out PPs do affect. I think because RAW has so much latitude and color depth, it's less obvious if you dont grade photos dramatically. Hope this helps :D Btw i really enjoy the recepies you shared, and thank you very much for all the work you do and the exceptional content you produce :)
Of course they do, Sony also mentions this on their page. Unfortunately not all settings will be transfered to the raw files, so you still need to color match.

I created a workaround for this exact purpose. Check out the UA-cam tutorials for a comprehensive overview of the basic workflow using these film simulations. ua-cam.com/play/PL-gfcmjtW3nup_6nXvu8JTn3obVpU2-o-.html&si=zu9Smo1BlLE0jzBb

Hi
Very nice efforts you have made on Google i found your Side I read it on go it is very helpful to me. i am always struggling to get the perfect skin tone ( i am using a7IV)
Can we get skin tone like the Canon in Sony Cameras?
Thank you
Hi Alex,
I had a few questions in looking to buy the film simulations:
1. Whats the difference between getting the film simulations pdf vs getting the lightroom presets ? ( any advantages of one over the other, except for the obvious that picture profile pdf will allow me to see the effects in camera while shooting
2. Would the presets work on a Nikon D750 / sony A6000 (since nikon colors are usually toward the green side by default even in RAW)
( I aim to buy a sony A7C2, but for now I have these 2 cameras at hand )
I have the same WB question
Basically, the Settings are Daylight Balanced, but you can adjust them to your own scene for consistency in colors.
Compared to real film , which cannot be adjusted on the spot, digital offers versatility. The settings presented are a starting point and you should definitely then according to your scene.
I do it like this:
Input your color settings and from there I mostly adjust the kelvin, but if the image comes out too magenta or too green I go into the color filter and start pushing it in the opposite direction to balance out colors.
Sometimes greener, sometimes more on the orange side
When creating these film recipes I wanted to incorporate as many of these color variations, so I prepared multiple color settings so the user has options to choose from, and maybe get closer to how they remember images coming out of that film roll.
Hope this made sense, let me know if you have any other questions
A seperate video on this for nooba plz, im confused. 😂

How about the handling of color profiles, aka film simulations? Can you process raw images in-camera to try out different color profiles on the same raw image?
sadly no, that is not an option

You are so welcome! And thank you for sharing, it helps the channel
Sir, What camera would you suggest if I want to shoot film simulations pictures/videos of myself only for Instagram , Sony zve10, Sony Zv1 or Sony Zv1 f??
zve10

We need the Color Temperaturen and Color Filters to achieve the Look. But it seems These Settings are for daylight? What about tungsten light - how to accuratly adjust to other Color Ambients?
you substract the difference. For example Daylight is 5500K, Tungsten is 2900-3200 K. there is roughly a 2500K difference which you will substract from the initial recipe in order to calibrate yur daytime recipe t tungsten. Then use the colro filter to adjust tint.
Hey where did you get that color board?
Dude, this video is incredible. So much knowledge in one video.
Which camera is being used in this video?
sony rx100 mark 6
By the way, do you see it feasible to create the recipe for the Kodachrome color in a camera? in that case! I certainly think it would be incredible to try. Thank you and again congratulations on the project
I've recreated 2 Kodachrome film simulations, and you can find the results in my Blog articles. www.veresdenialex.com/sony-film-simulation-blog
Canon (with Canon Picture Style), Nikon (with Nikon Picture Control Editor) and Fujifilm (with Fujifilm X-Raw) can create picture color profile in their PC softwares. I'm wondering if Sony's PC software can do this? Thank you!

Great content!, you readed some sony guide to nko w what afeects what?
Glad you found it helpful!
When I first started experimenting with picture profiles, there was little to no documentation available. Sony had some vague descriptions for each, but nothing much. So I had to experiment and see on my own how each option affects the image and how to leverage them to get the best colors out of the box. Now Sony provides a slightly more detailed documentation right here helpguide.sony.net/di/pp/v1/en/contents/TP0000909106.html
Roughly after 1 year I came with my first 8 film simulations which can be found here ua-cam.com/video/SZDaH3k6BUw/v-deo.html
and now after 2-3 years we have 51 film simulation for Sony cameras that I feel makes the shooting experience much more enjoyable, by offering more interesting colors and contrast without the need of any post processing
Check the workflow here ua-cam.com/play/PL-gfcmjtW3nup_6nXvu8JTn3obVpU2-o-.html&si=39vXrlWuN9M6N2cY

lol thanks :D
I didn't even know my camera could do all this. You showed me a whole new world.
Is there a possibility to have more than 9 picture profiles? It seems like too much work to tweak all those settings once you have more than 9 custom picture profiles. Or is there atleas a faster way to set all those settings i.e. somehow saving and applying those saved picture profiles?
EDIT: Memory recall feature is probably a good workaround
I use memory recall mode. Check my workflow ua-cam.com/play/PL-gfcmjtW3nup_6nXvu8JTn3obVpU2-o-.html&si=H9T2PnlD-L-IwJ3P

Hello! Do you have a picture profile to achieve the Leica look?
I have a recipe called Leicachrome, and it's meant to replicate the colors of Leica M8, but I haven't had the opportunity to rent a Leica just yet. So I've used unedited jpeg photos from leica M8 as a reference to create this simulation.

Hi there
I want to buy your pdf, but I have a question beforehand.
I'm little bit color blind. I can't feel the subtle changes in color. Can you give me a cheat sheet for the white balance that I can trust and no need for tweaking?
I do mostly indoor family events, sometime daytime, and sometimes at night.
I have my niece bday coming up this 26th July and I want to use it right away.
Can you help me with what kind of preset to use for the bday event? It's gonna be two times celebration.
Good day, does this work on A7C II ? I'm planning to get your simulation on your website but I don't see my camera there
yep, it works for any new camera released after the ones mentioned on the website. Those are the first camera from their lines to be compatible with these film simulation, anything coming onwards will have the compatibility
Can I use these PPs for photography as well?
yes! They are baked in the JPEG only tho. The Raw will be affected only by the gamma
@@veresdenialexIs JPEG mode the same as Fine on the camera? Or can should I set the camera to RAW+JPEG when using these PP settings?

I know a LOT of people think PPs don't affect the RAW photos, but they actually do.
If you do a test and push saturation you will notice there is a difference.
I notice this when I started shooting picures in Cinetone, and picures feel more soft and colors seemed a bit more cinematic.
Though this is just in my mind, but after doing a test in a control enviroment, turns out PPs do affect.
I think because RAW has so much latitude and color depth, it's less obvious if you dont grade photos dramatically.
Hope this helps :D
Btw i really enjoy the recepies you shared, and thank you very much for all the work you do and the exceptional content you produce :)
Of course they do, Sony also mentions this on their page. Unfortunately not all settings will be transfered to the raw files, so you still need to color match.
Only the gamma affects the raws. Gerald Undone did a test on it.
Jason Vong just released a video with an “Anime” film simulation look on his Fuji…anyone know how to get that look on Sony?
