Your next 80’s dark fantasy should be Legend (1985), starring Tom Cruise and Tim Curry as Lord Darkness. That’s the best creature makeup in cinema IMO. I suggest watching the US release with the Tangerine Dream soundtrack for the ultimate 80’s vibes. There are (4) releases and I wish they combined the US TV release with the theatrical because there’s a much longer scene of Meg the swamp creature in the TV copy we recorded on VHS.
Labyrinth is my #1 favorite childhood film and soundtrack. I still put on this album to clean the house or rock out on a road trip. The imagination and creativity of the Jim Henson Creature Shop is incredible. I highly recommend watching the documentary on the making of the Labyrinth, it’s fun.

I second this recommendation! It's especially fun when you learn that Meg Mucklebones is played by Robert Picardo, the holographic doctor in Star Trek, Johnny Cab in "Total Recall", and Eddie Quist in "The Howling". One of my all-time favorite werewolf movies!

Thanx for this reaction, its fantastic to remember these old movies and now with my knowledge understand the symbolism behind, how all that was just simbolic, the baby brother was just a part of her, it's the essence that she wasn't valuing and all was a iniciatic prove at a superior dimension, we need to overcome the maze to rescue our essence.
When the white owl appeared, I already understood that it would be an initiatory ordeal!
The white owl is the symbol of this internal tester, he is the tempter, he knows our egos, walks among them, manipulates everything towards a possible fall, but with the intention of teaching us, aiming for us to see reality and make choices, freeing ourselves from any threat of falling and achieving immense light on a climb indeed.
13 hours to solve the labyrinth is another symbolism, we all have an internal clock, and hour 13 is the hour of death, of completion, 13 in the tarot is the card of death! So the maze is our life here, we have to deal, we all have "13 hours" to deal, to rescue our essences and climb in light!

I grew up in the 80s and got to see this film in the theater.
The ballroom scene where David was dancing with Sarah actuslly called for him to kiss her at the end of their dance (as it was in the novel), but when David found out that Jennifer Connelly was only 14, being a gentleman, he refused. He did comment in one interview that she was very mature for her age; that he didn't feel like he was working with a child.
Unlike many teenagers at the time, Jennifer wasn't a fan of the legendary artist. "I wasn't cool enough. There were 14-year-olds who definitely got it." In hindsight, she believes not being "cool" played in her favor in the end. Had she been aware of how big of a deal working with Bowie was, she would probably have been way too nervous to perform.
Bowie's personality helped Jennifer to get into the role of Sarah. "He was funny and gracious and made me feel so comfortable." After the film came out, she delved into Bowie's music and gained understanding of the impact he had in the entertainment industry. "After working with him, he became a real hero of mine because he was so kind to me - I was a 14-year-old kid and knew nothing."
Upon his death on January 10, 2016, she lamented his loss, not only for his artistic contributions, but also his big heart. "It's very sad, his passing, for so many reasons. To me, not only was he a genius, he was a genius who had the time to be kind. That was my experience of him."

Some fun trivia: Christopher Malcolm, who played Sarah's father, originated the role of Brad Majors in the Rocky Horror Show in the London cast, and appears briefly in it's sequel Shock Treatment. He also rescued Luke Skywalker from the planet Hoth in Empire Strikes Back, and was also in the movie Highlander which came out the same year as Labrynth. He is probably best known for his role in the comedy show Absolutely Fabulous as Saffy's dad, Justin.

I've always loved this movie. Growing up, we had a VHS copy that we recorded from cable TV. The masquerade ball was always my favorite scene of the movie as a kid, and I loved Sarah's dress. All of the songs in this movie are bangers. I still own a copy of this movie on DVD and I still own a physical copy of the soundtrack on CD.
I don't know if anyone else mentioned this in the comments, but Toby is Brian Froud's son who did all the creature designs. I was obsessed with his art work as a kid. I still own one of his art books of fairies Toby grew up to be an artist, special effects designer, puppeteer, filmmaker, and performer. I believe he was involved in the Dark Crystal television series. I think its pretty cool that his followed in similar circles as his dad. Also they originally talked about using Michael Jackson as the Goblin King rather than David Bowie. Could imagine how different the music in this movie would of been if they had gone with Michael instead of Bowie?
To continue with your 80'S fantasy films now you have to watch Legend with Tom Cruise.

I wonder if Henson and company were thinking of the ballad (there are literally hundreds of variants), Lady Isabel and the Elf-knight when they visualized Jareth breaking into Sarah's room?
FAIR lady Isabel sits in her bower sewing,
Aye as the gowans grow gay
There she heard an elf-knight blawing his horn.
    The first morning in May
2 'If I had yon horn that I hear blawing,
And you elf-knight to sleep in my bosom.'
3 This maiden had scarcely these words spoken,
Till in at her window the elf-knight has luppen.
4 'It's a very strange matter, fair maiden,' said he,
'I canna blaw my horn but ye call on me.
5 'But will ye go to yon greenwood side?
If ye canna gang, I will cause you to ride.'
6 He leapt on a horse, and she on another,
And they rode on to the greenwood together.

I love how you appreciate all the little things too! It was all stuff from her room. Her mother is an actress you can see from the newspaper clippings in her room and ran off with a fellow actor, David Bowie. But always wished someone would do the same movie but without the musical parts and done in a more darker way. And with today’s effects and cgi, it could be very special. Here’s hoping. But still love this movie. Great storey. And things to learn along the way. Our imagination is important for us all. And becoming adults tends to rid us of our child like fun in life. We make things out to be far more serious then they need to be. And to put pressure to succeed. Live a little, enjoy and create. Now people only allow themselves that moment of fun when watching superhero movies. And thinking things like tik tok and other social media is being creative. It’s not. Your own imagination and. Resting your own world is far more interesting. And rewarding.

Great reaction sadly when the two originally people didn’t understand, it didn’t understand Jim Hansen, pyramid groups, berated it said it was too adult themed too scary for children. He wanted to do a sequel for so long, but he died before they could do one and now that David Bowie dead too, so Jennifer Connolly is a big star now It’s so funny because originally she was 14 came out top gun one was out then two and she was not old enough to see it now she’s love interest part two it’s just funny I thought deleted scenes. You know a blu-ray copy that said her mother died of cancer when she was four and the toys were all she had left to her mother the last time she gave her before she died You couldn’t understand that better when she was a protective of them because shortly after she died, her father married somebody else had a new baby so she went to him. A kid is still grieving loss and originally she was practicing for a school playi❤ in the park but now I saw an novelization of the movie. It said her mother left them when she was four to go to Hollywood would be a star before we started. She just visited her mother in Hollywood with a her mother’s new boyfriend Who had molested her and that’s what the goblin represents the new boyfriend who tried to molester at a party in Hollywood but I like your thoughts better you’re right it’s everything in the room or everything. She thinks important in her life allow something very well done you got it and a lot of others didn’t get it. You know people misunderstood her the character for a long time but I thought you know she’s not so bad she’s just a kid, Mr. mother but she has character growth, but with the novelization, out there. I don’t know what to think. Now either way she’s an abused kid. You are aware following threads to bring stuff together to make the movie more enjoyable to watch Fun fact gates McFadden Dr crusher from Star Trek generation. She was the choreographer for this movie. That’s how Star Trek saw her and caster for the role. Did a great job. Thank you for your hard work. It’s appreciated. You all. Your Audio engineer needs to work on the setup. Sometimes the reactors are more in one ear than the other, the current stream of Coby watching Airplane 2 is completely unbearable since she is only audible in the right ear.
The reactions are godlike and I enjoy all of them, but damn, if one ear bleeds and the other feels like its clogged since there is no audio on that channel, that's obviously not nice to listen to.

Coby started doing remote reactions so we could get more of her on the channel. Most of these glitches will eventually be worked out.

Why does 90% of reactors make such overly done expressions at the slightest thing considered 'ick or creepy'. I seriously don't see what is so deserving of "I hate it so much" about small googly eyes or hands.
Trying to justify everything as just her imagination and making it all up really ruins the story IMO especially for first watching. Can't a fantasy story have magical and supernatural elements without trying to strangle it with our reality.
Do you want Wizard of Oz be just a dream? Alice in Wonderland a hallucination?
Saying Hoggle is being 'mean'? After Sarah took back the trinket she gave him for help? She is the mean one IMO breaking the deal on her end since he got her out of the Oubliete. I got a pet peeve about protagonists not being trustworthy in their deals.
Too bad you cut one of the coolest looking scenes IMO, where Jareth takes a step from below the MC Escher stairs to above in a single move. It just emphasizes the otherworldly-ness of the goblin king.

Jim Henson who created THE MUPPET SHOW, SESAME STREET, DARK CRYSTAL & LABYRINTH also created the first two live action TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES 1990-1991 before his to soon passing away in 1991

    • @DanJackson1977

Jim Henson did not create those films. His puppet studio and creative team created the *costumes* and *puppets* for them, but other than approving overseeing their creation he had little involvement. He passes away around when the first film came out. He died in 1990, not 91.

@DanJackson1977 I know that, he did help create some of those tv shows ECT and his creature shop help create the teenage mutant ninja turtles costumes and the 1991 tv show DINOSAURS

Muppets movies? Eh, no. Or at least, they wouldn't be lumped in with all of the other movies you've been watching. They happen to share Jim Henson with this movie but they are otherwise just kids movies. Maybe it's an age thing, but while I'm nostalgic over Krull and Willow and so on, which I saw as a kid, Muppets movies were "for kids." I was a big kid, Muppets was for little kids.
Can't wait for The Last Starfigher! You have a list going? Beastmaster, Ladyhawke, Time Bandits, etc., all on there? Whatever, you've been knocking it out of the park, finding all the good ones. I'm sure you'll keep it up.

Love both pans labyrinth and labyrinth. However they are too different to compare from the date it was made to the target audience. Pans labyrinth definitely is not one to watch when you need a boost of cheerfulness
