The dad is Hoyt Axton... country and rock & roll singer / Songwriter. Wrote some pretfy famous tunes back in the day, for himself and others (Steppenwolf, 3 Dog Night, Ringo Starr sang tunes of his). Acting was his side hustle. Also, his mom wrote "Jailhouse Rock", one of Elvis' big hits.
@@VictorLugosinothing the guy said is wrong. And while Hoyt Axton did have a folk audience, Elvis, Three Dog Night, and the Easy Rider soundtrack were what paid the bills.
I was 14 when this came out and thought it was a riot> Gremlins 2 is equally great! My Favorite Christmas Movie is Miracle on 34th Street with Maureen O'Hara. Fun reaction Mia, feels like forever since I have seen one of your reactions.
This movie's soundtrack is so iconic. I specially like the dramatic part. I always loved that "sadness", it makes the whole movie feel more fairy tale-like and nostalgic.
Believe me when I say that most of us 80s kids WERE gremlins. This movie was hands down the most hilarious thing most of us had ever seen up until that point that wasn't an outright cartoon. Good time to be alive.
When Gizmo falls off the desk into the trash can (13:28), I swear he says god d*@mmit, I have always heard it that way and it makes me laugh every time.
A couple of Easter Eggs (odd, considering this is considered a Christmas movie...); - At the beginning of the film, the town theater is showing a double feature of 'A Boy's Life', and 'Watch the Skies'... These were original working titles for 'E. T.', and 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' - At the Inventors Convention, Steven Spielberg is driving the electric cart, Jerry Goldsmith is talking on the other pay phone (later replaced by Robby the Robot from 'Forbidden Planet', who is quoting lines from that movie), and George Pal's Time Machine (from the movie of the same name) can be seen in the background, before it disappears in the next scene...
Mia, I was waiting for you to recognize the Main Street was also Hill Valley's in BTTF. Maybe it was all the fake snow. 🤣 I hope you alsp watch Gremlins 2. It makes this one look tame. In a fun way.
The main town of this film is the same as Back To The Future Clock Tower. They are also making a Gremlins 3. I met John Glover from Gremlins 2 and Smallville. Even though he was the villian in Smallville. He is one of the kindest people. Last year we talked for over 10 minutes. Just one of the kindest people. The town is at Universal studios back lot. Groundhogs Day was filmed in Woodstock Illinois where I used to live a half hour away. I used to work for a security company and work security for Prison Break tv show. 1 episode they filmed it in Woodstock. The guy that was driving there, I see Woodstock Illinois and when we got to the location I see the main town of Woodstock and I recognized it. I said it Groundhogs Day lol
That robot is from a 50s classic called Forbidden Planet. It's famous and made appearances in many movies. Unlike many 50s sci-fi's, they spared no expense making that movie.
FUN FACT: My 9 year old learned that Santa doesn’t exist when he was walking through the living room about an hour ago where his dad (that’s me) stupidly forgot he was watching a reaction video of a movie where they specifically mention that Santa doesn’t exist, and just at the right her time too, might I add, he overheard that specific conversation, because that one specific crazy dead dad trauma-dump scene comes on just as he is in earshot and he hears “that’s how I learned Santa wasn’t real” and he freezes, turns to look at me as I’m fumbling for the pause button and trying to come up with the right thing to say, but of course not in time for the reactor to expand on the concept by telling her own Santa-isn’t-real origin story, and my son looks at me and says “I knew it!” and runs in his room. I follow after him and we have a nice, long conversation. He’s fine, everything is fine. But I feel like just a little bit of magic is gone out of the world now. movie trivia! - Chris Columbus' script went through a few drafts before a shooting script was finalized. His original version had the Gremlins killing the dog and cutting off the mom's head and tossing it down the stairs. These elements were never shot due to the fact that director Joe Dante and Warner Bros. wanted the movie to be more family-oriented.(i've always believed it was that one evil lady) - Zach Galligan already auditioned for parts with Phoebe Cates before and felt very comfortable with her. When it came to the session, he rested his head on her shoulder and gazed at the camera. Executive producer Steven Spielberg said, "Oh my God, look at that! He's in love with her already. It was added by director Joe Dante and Zach Galligan as an homage to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). - The original script contained a scene where the gremlins attacked a McDonald's, eating the customers instead of burgers. - The theater that blows up with the gremlins inside was subsequently involved in another accident when Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) in Back to the Future (1985) smashes into the front entrance. The theater then burned down with the rest of the buildings in the fire that happened right after the filming of Back to the Future Part II (1989). - Human Body Count: 4 (confirmed). Gremlin Body Count: 5 (and many other gremlins in the movie theater) - The Gremlin exploding in the microwave had to be reshot after the first Gremlin explosion was deemed too gory. - also apparently the kid who sold gizmo was "disciplined" outside in the ally as punishment.
One of the first movies I remember seeing in a theater. I was 5 and my folks took me and my big brother (the TV advertising showed Gizmo, but purposely avoided showing the monsters, so parents thought it was okay for kids). I remember a lot of people walking out with their kids, but my brother and I thought it was hysterical (especially when the gremlin got exploded in the microwave and when the mean old lady was launched out the window). But for context, it helps to remember a lot of us 80s kids watched Bugs Bunny, The Road Runner, and Tom and Jerry, so Gremlins felt almost like a live action cartoon.
Mia: "I've seen every Christmas movie." Me: "Not if you haven't seen Gremlins." I saw this at 10 or 11 and it might have been scary if it wasn't so entertaining. Also, good eye on the small town. The set is called Courthouse Square and they've been filming in it since 1948, and yes Back to the Future was also filmed there.
A favorite from my teenage years. I was 13 when this movie came out; I could not get enough of it. I have seen Phoebe Cates in a lot of films, but I love her in this one the best. Her character was like the girl next door; I guess you could say I had a little crush on her. This movie and Fast Times at Ridgemont High were the first movies I saw her in. The director of Gremlins, Joe Dante, is one of my favorites. I grew up watching his movies. Piranha, The Howling, Explorers, Innerspace, Small Soldiers, Matinee, Looney Tunes: Back in Action; all movies that I love. He also directed a segment of 1983's Twilight Zone: The Movie. I love the scene where Billy's father is at the convention. The guy you see in the motorized wheelchair with the small TV is Steven Spielberg and he is watching Poltergeist on the TV. The guy standing behind Billy's dad at the phones is the legendary composer Jerry Goldsmith, who composed the scores for all of Joe Dante's films. In the same scene is Robby the Robot, from the classic Sci-Fi film Forbidden Planet. And you can see the time machine from the classic 1960 film adaptation of H.G. Wells The Time Machine, which is my favorite film adaptation of that story. I also love that Billy is watching the original 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers as he is feeding the chicken to Stripe and his buddies. Kevin McCarthy, who plays the character of Miles Bennell in that movie, had roles in several of Joe Dante's movies.
Mogwai is the transliteration of the Cantonese word 魔鬼 for demon. That's the same small town movie set used in _Back to the Future._ The clock tower there is the high school in this film. _Gremlins_ and Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom got so many parental complaints for being rated PG instead of R that the fuss led the MPAA to create the PG-13 rating.
Every time you're watching a Joe Dante movie or a Roger Corman movie (mostly Dante), Dick Miller (Mr. Futterman) will guarantee have a small role in them. The only main lead Miller has done, or what I have seen and know at least, was in Roger Corman's Bucket of Blood.

My dad was so sick of this movie literally left me alone in the theater and snuck into ofher movies... hey it was the 80s. 🤷♂️ Movies we saw as kids in the 80s were kinda dark. Keep in mind, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom came out this summer... it was also PG and had some REALLY dark stuff. These 2 movies created the PG13 rating.
35:30 Billy was following the tracks Stripe left in the snow. 38:30 I was 4 when this came out, and it scared the shit outta me. And yet, I kept wanting to watch it.
In response to Mia's thought that kids who saw this when it released either laughed or were terrified, I definitely laughed but was never terrified. I just thought the whole film was cool.
When I first saw this, I desperately wanted Mrs. Deagle tell Billy "Kiss my grits!". (For the younger viewers; Polly Holiday, who plays Mrs. Deagle in this movie, had been famous for playing this waitress character in a 70s sitcom called " Alice" where she would always say that catchphrase.)
The cute girl was Phoebe Gates and she was in many fun and coming of age movies back then. She was also in almost every school boy's dreams back then. Just saying.

He intentionally didn't eat because he didn't want to change. 34:57 - That's Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet (1956), one of the most famous movie robots ever. He's appeared in dozens of TV shows, a couple movies, and even TV commercials. There's a sequel, but it kind of sucks. You should watch The Time Machine and Forbidden Planet. Both are very well made.

Should watch unstoppable if u haven't seen it but if u have love to know what u think about it Also the girl in this movie also played in drop dead Fred another good movie and the kid that comes in with christmas tree is an actor in the goonies, another iconic 80 early 90s movie
Great movie, You should see the sequel much more funny and less dark but not a Christmas movie. Fun fact the actor Billy creep boss who liked Billy girlfriend Kate played with her (The actress) in another movie "Fast time in Richmond High" 2 years before where he was "Simping" about her if you know what I mean in a very famous memorable scene from the 80s :) . which made the actress a star. :). He also been a great lovable character in the Beverly Hills cop movies which you should see (1 and 2 only). Another fun fact Kizmo was supposed to be Stripe but they decided to keep them separate even the mother was suppose to beheaded. Another great underrated action Christmas movie you should see is Reindeer games 2000 with Ben Affleck. no one react to it yet.
I discovered there was no Santa when a noise woke me up on Christmas Eve so I went downstairs and interrupted my mother and her latest boyfriend discussing their life after I was out of the way.... while they were wrapping my presents. Christmas was never quite the same. I remember when I first watched this movie and heard the 'father in the chimney' story and thinking, "Yep! That sure beats mine." It was fun to watch your reaction, Mia. I found the movie volume difficult to hear though, even with everything turned up to 11 (Greetings Spinal Tap fans!).
80s movies also always seem to have these kind of vaguely gendered, yet unsexed, and unmatured, friendly, cute companion creatures that have undying loyalty to the main character yet have no potential for their own, independent lives.
I remember when this came out that many people were displeased, since the trailers made it look like more of a kids film and not a grisly horror movie. And yes, Furby was based on the popularity of the Gremlins. And yes, "mogwai" is Cantonese for demon, devil or monster. The mom in this is the most badass mother in all of filmdom. When the gremlin hiding behind the desk in the classroom takes a bite from the apple and throws it back, he says "traif" which is the Yiddish word for an unacceptable food. The studio hated the Santa in the chimney story and wanted it removed, but Joe Dante insisted it be kept in, since it encapsulates the horror/comedy mood of the film. Steven Spielberg believed in Dante's right, as director, to do as he saw fit and lobbied for him. So it stayed in. I personally think it's not what it seems, since people can't really fit in chimney flues (they are less than a foot wide, typically) and it's some sort of indication that Phoebe Cates' character may be a bit nuts. The sequel reinforces this.
Gremlins 2 with all the different types of gremlins was my favorite, both are good movies. Hope everyone has a wonderful day.
Agree! The first one is good, but the sequel is great!
The same Universal Studios backlot was used last the town center in Gremlins and Back to the Future. Also, Howie Mandel does the voice for Gizmo.

Right? This was downright whimsical compared to many Kiss movies at that time.

My favorite Christmas movie
I remember that big robot from an old TV show 🤖
The song still haunts me❤😊
Mia's the best 💯👑🫶🏿
The Chinese characters on the entrance to the Chinese curio shop translates to God’s Monsters.
Im shocked the writer didnt catch the BIGGEST mistake in this amzing film. EVERY MINUTE is after midnight. So it makes NO SENSE
Nobody gets punished for the gremlins in this.
Technically, it's _always_ after midnight.
Haha daylight savings and time zones always ruin that part of the mythology and snow is water lol
have you seen "It Happened One Christmas" with Marlo Thomas or a "Mr Magoo Christmas"?
I discovered there was no Santa when a noise woke me up on Christmas Eve so I went downstairs and interrupted my mother and her latest boyfriend discussing their life after I was out of the way.... while they were wrapping my presents. Christmas was never quite the same. I remember when I first watched this movie and heard the 'father in the chimney' story and thinking, "Yep! That sure beats mine." It was fun to watch your reaction, Mia. I found the movie volume difficult to hear though, even with everything turned up to 11 (Greetings Spinal Tap fans!).
Favorite Christmas movie >> Die Hard
80s movies also always seem to have these kind of vaguely gendered, yet unsexed, and unmatured, friendly, cute companion creatures that have undying loyalty to the main character yet have no potential for their own, independent lives.
Corey Feldman is not the slightest bit creeped out seeing an unknown creature who speaks English?
i was 18 when this came out
No Food After Midnight
Roughly translated, Mogwai means demon.
This and Temple of Doom gave birth to the PG-13 rating
Heck yeah! Gremlins!
Oh My Lanta -- GENIUS. from an Antitheist, thanks
Definitely not John Candy, I'm sure that's the Uncle Buck your referring to.
I see more Grimace than Mogwai in the Wuv Luvs.
God I miss the 80's. Back before the "think of the kids" mentality went too far. Dodged a bullet.
32:49 Remember Joecartoon?
I bet you haven't seen The Christmas Dragon.
Gremlins 2 ?
Gun shop owner in the terminator
