I was hit from behind by a Ute three years ago. Surgery, Physio…etc. I have to say, I was gun shy for a bit. Some vehicle would come blasting past at speed and It’d startle me. But I just couldn’t stay away. Riding has been part of my life for decades, and I think I’ll ride till I’m no longer able to. And I keep a postie tucked away in the garage, since even if I’m a skinny old fart I should be able to ride. It’s my passion, so giving it up is really out of the question. But being reluctant is natural. It bloody hurts! But ride, I must.

I had to stop after the accident .
I was too disabled to get on the dr350.
But when the bike finally arrived home I had a small ride around the streets. And took it to the track and rode carefully. Then I sold it and apart from riding dads 1100 once I didnt ride and own a bike for 26 years.
Luckily I am back into riding now.
Very Happy back riding again without mental issues. Had to buy a bike to suit my limitations.
    No more dirt riding.
Wish I was able to keep riding through the years I lost. .
Just been on a 450km ride today. Freezing cold and painful but great to be riding again.
Total 54k kms in under 2 years. Love it.

I've had a few accidents in my life. Hit by a car that failed to give way at an intersection, ran into the back of a car that did a u turn right in front of me, and didn't see a rock in a bush on the side of a track and ended up in hospital, and on crutches for a couple of weeks.
Each time, the general response was "when are you getting rid of the bike?"
I've also hit a car after not seeing a give way sign, and been hit by someone not seeing me. No-one asked the question about getting rid of the car...
I ride because I love to ride. It's hard to say that no accident will ever stop me, because a really serious crash could well change your perspective on things. But I'd like to believe that I will be riding until I can't hold the bike up any more (but then, there is always a can-am...) :-)

Hello Mark, I have enjoyed this fireside chat; I have had a fews 'offs' over the years and I allowed myself to recover and get back on the bike. Riding makes me happy, no one or no event is going to take that away from me. Spokes...I just keep a casual check;. Power and cost of living, well I have solar panels and that helps a lot, however I do lots of little things to reduce power consumption. Keep safe good people. Thanks Mark and hello to Naomi. I had an accident where a tractor turned in front of me. 3 years off work, 18 surgeries so far, I was 29 when I was told I needed new knees because they are bone on bone, 39 now and still havent had them. I was back on the bike 5 months after my accident riding around Tasmania with panniers full of dressings to change daily. I now ride a Can Am Spyder because its hard to get on a 2 wheeled bike but at least I am out there riding😊 everyone is different though. At the end of the day it wasn't my fault. You will know it in yourself when you are ready. If you never want to get on a bike again its your choice no one elses.

Learn from your accidents and get on with it. I'm older and slower than I've ever been but still enjoy getting off road and out on an adventure and exploring the country. Also have metal plates in my back amongst other injuries. I did have some years off after 12 months not walking...

    Best purchase ever.

Had a couple of good stacks in my younger days (truck went through a stop sign, I T-boned it and went over the top, went over the bars on dirt at 100Km/h and knocked myself out for a good while, couldn't pick the bike up when I came to as ribs were crunching and I could barely breathe, took me a couple of hours to walk into town for a stay in hospital and some recovery time). I think that taught me to ride within my limits and look at every other vehicle as if they are going to do the wrong thing. You can't predict what everyone will do, but it certainly lowers the odds of being taken out. Two fused vertebrae and a replacement metal and plastic disc in my neck now, still riding!

Hi Mark, I can tell you that I have been great with riding even after a few chills and spills, but recently I called a an old family friend to have his wife answer his phone and tell me he had been killed in a motorcycle accident. I have to be honest it was a complete gut punch and took my breath away, I was at a loss for words when she told me this and all I could do was give my condolences to her and after I hung up the phone I just sat there in shock. Now I have never had a motorcycle crash of friends every affect me like this one has, and I will tell you it gave me pause. Now I love two wheel wind therapy as I call it, but I have to say is it worth it to put my wife through something like that. I know my friend was an accomplished rider and most likely it was not his fault, but you can only control so much of your riding environment around you. So with that said, all you can do is keep your head on a swivel ride to the best of your ability and be safe as possible. I will continue ride as I do love it, and my wife is ok with it and the risk. So to the fella asking the question, I guess ultimately its your decision to as to weather you are happy ridding and ok with the risk, or if you don't want to take a chance, but know this you can still have a bad day in a car crash. Try not live in fear of the what if scenario.
We do the same thing with power consumption, we have solar and it helps tremendously, we have not paid a power bill for three months now thanks to our solar on the house. Even though it will take forever for us to pay the cost and installation of the solar system after purchase. But we are locked in at a certain rate for 10 years so as power cost go up we still pay our same rate, which is all a wash with the power we pump back into the grid from our solar.

I've only had one serious off in 25yrs. I don't count the times off road on the BMW. I was too hot in a corner on a country road on a nice winter day after a couple of months not riding. Harley Heritage Softail. Someone had done a few donuts and rooster tailed rocks all over the road. I went off the road and hit a wood power pole. Scuffed me up pretty good and did about $3500 damage to the bike. All cosmetic damage to me and the bike. I rode it on out to the range and had my shoot and rode it home after.
I wouldn't give up on it. Just slow up a bit and take it easy. Life is short, and shouldn't be boring just to make it longer. We only get one go. Enjoy it.

Hi Mark, interesting video choice as many riders/family members have this conversation/disagreement. After my crash a few years ago, getting back on my motorcycle was one of the hardest and yet the best thing I've ever done. That same night I rode again, I had the best sleep in years and nightmares ceased to occur. Crashing at high speed is very traumatic and difficult to overcome mentally. Although my accident was one of the worst things that's ever happened to me, my time spent riding motorcycles are some of the greatest memories & experiences of my life. It's always about what you are personally comfortable with in the current chapter in your life and what makes you HAPPY :) Ride safe out there, Summer.

    You covered it 100%...
Everyone is different some people it is over just on a drop in the garage, and for others, it is full throttle at the track, things happen times you could have done something about it... others times you are just in for the ride, it is what you do after that makes the difference.
Spokes, if the tinks sound the same all good, but if you have one or some higher/lower pitched might be good to have a look at.

Hi mark enjoyed the fireside chat on the subject of accidents, I've been riding bikes for 54yrs had a few offs but, in 2015 had quite a serious accident, it took me a long time to recover but i pushed myself, when i got the insurance money for the bike i bought another one, i was not fully recovered on my first ride and i only got about a mile from the home and had to stop, i basically froze and thought i can't do this anymore, i managed to get back home, but i didn't try again for about 6wks we're all different, I've put all that in a box in the back of my mind and I'm still ridding at 70yrs it keeps me sane. That's the way i check my spokes by tapping seems to work 👍

    Hi Mark,
Pete from the UK here. I really enjoyed the fireside chat vid. Albeit I'm 53yrs old I didn't get into motorcycle riding until last year. I constantly fear having an accident as I'm sure I no longer recoup like I used to. Might I suggest you take a look at a young couples motorcycle journey on UA-cam called Ride The Bean. It may give an insight as to what can happen, how easy things can happen and I found it both inspirational and educational.
My wife and I really enjoy your channel. Keep up the great work.
    All the best
    Pete

While on a long 2-up tour many years ago on a 83 GT750, had a bad compound fx off-road accident working on a sheep station ironically in outback Queensland Australia. After lots of drama and a few flights and many months of rehab in Townsville we carried on by plane and bus. My fault. On a TT 350. Amazing doctors.
Long story short: It didn’t dampen my life long passion. My wife and I later got back on a bike and did another tour in Europe for a year in 92. When we had kids later and careers, I inevitably slowed down. But, never stopped. Own many bikes to this day.

I’ve been battling this in my head for three years now. While I was not in a serious motorcycle accident, my brother was. After seeing what it did to him and our whole families and friends, I definitely hesitate getting on my motorcycles. I believe it’s mainly because I wouldn’t want friends and family through that again…..ugh. Don’t get me wrong, I would not want the physical injuries either. I do ride, but not very often and I’m very picky of where I ride. I stay off of certain roads and away from certain intersections. Another factor is that at 53 years old, I’m no spring chicken anymore and any injuries would take longer to heal at this point, if they do at all.
    My brothers motorcycle accident;
He was a motorcycle cop for 25 years. He entered dozens and dozens of motorcycle skill competitions and has the trophies to prove it. He was on a motorcycle at least five days a week. Anyway, he was helping escort an ambulance to a hospital with an overdose patient that EMS was doing CPR on. Up ahead was a cop car blocking an intersection, so the ambulance can get through quick. As they past that intersection, my brother was behind the ambulance. That cop car attempted to get behind the ambulance, not knowing my brother was there. It was at night and the strobe lights inside the cop car made it difficult to see outside. He struck my brother. The initial impact broke his left hand and left femur. Eventually he went down, sliding sixty feet, while the motorcycle crash bars trapped his left leg to the ground. His head hit a sign post and that stopped him and the motorcycle. That slide chewed his lower leg to pieces, including severing the artery. There happened to be another ambulance that stopped. That crew saved his life, because he was nearly dead from blood loss. So after seventeen surgeries and two months in a hospital, they had to amputate his left lower leg. He now get along pretty well with a prosthetic, but it’s difficult at times.
If he, who had all that riding experience got into a serious life changing accident, there is no hope for me on the road.
Sorry for the long read, but it kinda got it off my chest again. Biker Bits is like therapy😂👍.

On the other hand it was not my own accident that made me almost stop riding, but a buddy of mine that died in a very voilen crash right in front of me in 2006 that made me thinking. The love of riding kept me on two wheels, as he world do as well.

Was riding motocross bikes in the bush when a mate crashed head on into a 4wd at fairly high speed. Broke both his legs, both wrists (almost lost one hand), bones sticking out, 7 months in hospital. When riding in the bush always ride as if there's vehicles coming the other way, stay left. If you can't see ahead ride as if something's going to pop up out of nowhere, because one day it will. Also not to mention the bike (yzf426) snapped the front axle completely, bar mount bolts and bent the frame inwards more than 10cm. Was hard to get back on a bike, few people I know stopped riding or don't ride as much because the accident... My mate still hasn't been able to (1.5 years later). A huge wake up call for everyone in my riding circle. I'll never stop riding dirt bikes.

Hey Mark. Very relevant topic. Just had an off in the wet a week back. Front wheel must have clipped some oil on the road. (Running D606's, and usually super in the wet)
Spent the week in hospital, broke my left wrist.. two ops later I'm back home.
Still replaying the whole incident in my mind thinking if I could have done anything differently.
But. I can't wait for my clutch hand to be better so I can get back on.
My wife said in the emergency room, I'm going to need a new helmet as my one took a knock. The Dr's and Nurses couldn't believe what she was saying.. hahahaha.
But being riding now since I was 15yo and turning 54 in August.
It is all in the mind...
Long and short I believe you get two types of riders...
Those who have fallen and those who are still going to fall..
Hope all who have had an off, is recuperating well and recover fully to ride again... cheers (Francois, Cape Town, SA)

Bikes been my life 40+ yrs never had car license
I had 2 vert's & 2 disc's replacements & couple rods thrown in for good luck from a work fall. i Shattered them from a spinal compression. was in my very late 40's slower recovery not young bones anymore.
after the spinal surgery took me 3yrs to get back on the bike , 5yrs now i STILL have good days & bad days.i'm as good as i ever get.
during rehab was from 1 hr walking around house down in shed then later took on a KTM KIT690RFR Rally Bike Build spend from 1hr on it slowly over time to 1/2 day to 3/4 day was my motivation rehab
working on the bikes i need sit as much as i can half bent over stuff's me i end up 3-4 days on bed pumped with Brufen & tramadol ALL WAYS HAVE THE MEDS ON RIDES in jacket
can't pick the bikes up now KTM 1290SE & 2 x 950SE's gotta get mates pick bike up if it would happen , deep sand riding now out due lower back strength
riding i have to pick my lines more & standing not possible due no lower back strength only standing in when i ride the drop offs / wash outs so i'm not stabbing my back on the seat as bike comes back up.
had to sell TLs 1088 NOS Streetfighter & RC51 joey dunlop rep road bikes ergonomics were no good for my back
was a complete life changer for me (rather had broken my arms & legs)
speedy recovery mate i feel the pain for yah don't give up will ride again.

It's not being able to control other drivers that scares me the most. Self inflicted injuries are one thing, getting taken out by someone else is another. The only crashes I've had are people looking right at me and then pulling out and BANG! PTSD is real. Watch out for wildlife too, animals are cute but stupid. Cheers Mark.

Spokes should be adjusted on tension. The best way is the tuning fork method. Start at the valve do checking every 2nd one until you get back to the valve, then jump to the next one. Alos checking rim runout is important as well

I think it all boils down to when the good times/feelings whilst riding are outweighed by bad or uncomfortable times/feelings then maybe it’s time to stop. And that relates to anything, a bad off, a bad back or leg that riding just makes worse. I think we all ride for the great feeling it gives us and if it no longer gives us that feeling, then that’s the time to stop.

Been rather lucky. Have the mindset drivers are going to try to take me out, or a roo or cow will appear out of the scrub. Was working on a Farm few years ago, ride 7km every morning checking stock. One morning i hit a boulder at 40km/ the size of a soccer ball, on a previously slashed track near a highway, the handle bars crossed up, and bike bounced side to side, i fought hard and managed to save coming off. Still Today i wonder how that boulder appeared over night to become on the track, and never had any blade marks on it. Maybe it was a snake with two legs.

Had two accidents over the years. The first one hurt, and it hurt a lot! The second one hurt but not as bad.
It’s like playing Russian roulette, one day the chamber with the bullet may spin up.
Some blokes the chamber never spins up, all comes down to how long you’re willing to play the game.
But once motorcycles are in your blood, they’re there for life.

so many reasons im not going to give up riding now that im back into it. the stress relief i get from riding, the physical challenge i get from riding not to mention i refuse to pay $250ish to fill up my 4x4 when my bike will go the same distance for far less. it would have to be a really bad off to stop me from riding. as for electricity usage i find it it comical on one hand they are pushing people to electric vehicles while at the same time telling us the grid cant cope.. think id lose whats left of my sanity if i couldnt ride..

Started riding at 16, 64 now, came off many times, t-boned a car that pulled out on me, never had any bad injuries. Would you stop driving if you had a car crash? Unlikely.

Well, we all know there are two kinds of motorcycle riders; those of us who have had a crash and those of us who are going to have a crash. The extent of physical injury can prevent you from riding, then again there are motocross riders who have busted more bones and get right back on the bike after healing continue racing. Obviously the mental side of riding after an accident can be a bit tough. The rider must make that decision. It is not a one answer question, more like physical therapy to get on the bike. Which riding itself is mental....and physical therapy also. Always ride defensively on concrete, if you get a wild hair up your bum i suggest take it on the dirt; a wee bit safer ha ha.... Yeah anyway, very relaxing chat Mark. Have a blessed sleep

Its a hard question to ask but i have had many big offs in my life of riding. only 1 raised the question of "is it too risky". Really lif is all about risk.. get on with living or get on dying" I dont think I could not ride..its what i do. I feel sad for people who do what they love..

I’m 26 and I’ve been dealing with ongoing feelings of wanting to ride again. Long story when my wife and i were 23 we were in a bike accident ( her being on the back). This happened right at the start of covid. Not my fault, driver was texting and driving and went about 35mph through a stop side and hit me. Did everything i could to avoid it. Ended up losing my right leg below the knee along with many many other injuries. My wife was injured as well but thank god i took the brunt of it. But everyday since especially in the warm weather i long for it. I feel as though i was given a 2nd chance at life as my Drs didn’t think I would make it and almost feel uneasy about wanting to ride. My wife has said she doesn’t want me to ride but us ok with me riding again as its my decision but she will never get back on. I keep finding myself looking at bikes online but just can’t pull the trigger. I want to and i eventually might. But something now wont let me. As much as i want to ride I don’t know how to deal with the idea of guilt God forbid it happens again. Seeing my family and wife go through it was probably worse than anything else. Sorry for the long read, guess i needed to get it off my chest

You should expect a period of pause with anything involving physical injury or change. As a boat builder and woodworker, I spend hours using a table saw, It is reasonably common while using glasses to feel the discomfort of the lightest of sawdust working its way into your eyes during a long day's work. After undergoing cataract surgery I avoided using the table saw for weeks not taking the risk of eye irritation. Well beyond the healing time I was careful about anything around my face and eyes. It took months to get back to speed in the garage. Saw dust is lightweight and takes little effort to rinse after exposure. The risk of a mild allergic reaction to sawdust is very likely for many. A far greater danger is the risk of exposing your eyes to rust particles and debris from working under a kitchen sink. Rust and debris in that scenario tend to be very heavy and will be difficult to rinse out causing potential far greater irritation involving medical help. Safety glasses while riding or working is a must. Not everyone needs to learn the hard way. Time is the great equalizer. If you are meant to ride you will eventually get back to it as your mind heals too.

Once had no choice but to give up riding having flown over an unexpected car, I recovered from the two broken arms, but the bike didn't recover from its injuries. and i gave it away for ten years. But the desire to ride again was strong, i could not escape the internal desire. Second time around I had no choice in giving up as I had to sell bike for financial reasons. again that internal desire had me itching to ride again, so when i could afford it i rode again. now I'm 61, and I know that something will again eventually stop me riding. And even though it gets in the blood, I think I want to retire from riding under my own choice, Like Cougar from the first Top Gun movie. I must take responsibility for my own self evaluation. and hang up the helmet, when I know, my body or mind are not perceiving the hazards or reacting appropriately. It may take a decent scare to find that moment, unsure, . however through experience and improved defensive riding, the scares and unexpected moments have become very rare. I will just have to see how it unfolds, But ultimately I do want it to be my decision. I have total respect for everyone that makes that decision to end riding. If young there is nothing wrong with giving it away, you can always go back to it later.

When you love helmet therapy, takes a lot to stop.Had my own prang, roundabout, cut off.Back injuries and all sorts of other crap, but still here and still riding.Gradually selling off my bigger bikes as hard to push around my driveway.Bought a little 500X to have some fun on the dirt while I'm still young enough,(70).2 takeaways for me,now ride with my Held rain jacket over riding gear,hi viz yellow and I notice people see me better.Another important takeaway,if you don't get in the ambulance, cops don't take it seriously, you got your story, they have their story, end of.Have a mate who had bad prang,he's bought a can am to keep riding

Mark, I think our type of riding / choice of bike makes a lot of sense when you consider the accidents that are possible when your ride a fast road bike ON THE ROAD WITH BLOODY CAR DRIVERS! Gum trees don’t jump out in front of you! Far safer and far more enjoyable in my opinion.

Hiya Mark, we met recently (few weeks ago) when I popped in to Enfield Essendon with my Bullet Tribute. I was saying to myself whilst watching above, go on mark, light up, never mind the PC. You cant have a Jimmy without them bloody smokes. Just then I realised I was envious of you. Open fire, Jimmy in hand and a cig and a lovely woman to boot. I had to recently give up my smokes, coz our wonderful Gov. wants to tax me to the hilt for my 50 yr old habit. Being on a pension it was food & utilities or them pricey smokes, even my little roll ups were costing me a small fortune. Its reason enough to go live in a 3rd world country where the Gov does not impose itself as much as our so called wonderful first world. Frakk them for what they did to our lives. Yea so no open fire here let alone a good woman, now even my meezly smokes are gone. So enjoy Mark, its as good as it gets. Cheers Matey, as I raise my empty glass to you (lol).

Know a few people who have been killed riding bikes and a few who have been put in hospital. Ive had a few near misses over the years and had two months off work after an off, but that was my own fault. Not put off riding just yet but ride a lot slower these days.

Wow! So may stories of personal motorcycle accidents and injuries. I've had mine over many years, in fact over 66 years. This Old Fart has gotten back on the bike, and now toned things down quite a bit. But to this day, it's the other Drivers who have put me in danger, not myself. I just can't understand why these Peanuts keep putting Riders at risk. Guys, be aware and treat them all as idiots on the road. Defensive Riding is helpful. Ride safe! 👍😁

I had a pretty bad accident 8 years ago when a pickup truck pulling a utility trailer pulled out in front of me on a country highway, which I then T-boned. While the thought of giving up riding never crossed my mind, I was effed up in the head for a couple seasons while I rode. I eventually got over it.
No offense taken at all with your smoking and drinking. This is a snowflake free zone! 😂
