If she had sang these at Judy's funeral while aiming at the coffin, we might still have Judy.

Yep, she could wake the dead. George Gershwin's summation of Merman's voice was so funny: Don't ever write a bad song for Merman; if you do, everyone is gonna' hear it. 😄

A very odd rendition. When did dear Ethel record this?

Both songs were incredibly popular. Many great performers did these songs, including Judy's great friend Frank Sinatra (who did a beautiful rendition of "Over the Rainbow" both for Columbia Records and on his radio show; and a fun version of "Trolley Song" for Your Hit Parade).

Ethel Merman always belted out whichever song she sang. I love her powerful and energetic voice. It is so galvanizing to me.

Erm, well, I will give Ethel credit (in that) she was always open to trying new things - no matter the result. Does anyone else out here recall the "Disco" album she recorded around 1979?

That album! Yes… oh, yes! I thought it was a rumour for the longest time until I got my hands on a copy. But, good for her. As much much of a novelty as that album was, she was still in good voice continuing her career as one of the “last of the big belters”!

@@musicalmagpie741 Oh, thank you for the reply - you confirmed my memory from decades ago! Ethel's Disco songs were really (mostly) just "goosed up" numbers from what she always sang. Just musically spun into the Disco sound of the day. (I love Ethel Merman, but do you recall "Lurch," from the "Adam's Family," rolling up his eyes?) Ethel (during the 1960's) appeared on every variety television show that was out there - always singing "Show Business." Gawd, even as a ten year-old (born in 1956) I was rolling up my own eyes. Having said this, Ethel Merman was an incredible Broadway star who never had a "flop."

I like her version of Ridin' High in that album. You can find her singing the album songs in all kinda chat shows here.

How could anyone forget that epic? Used to slap it on the stereo during one of the youthful booze and coke parties of yore, and everyone would be rolling on the floor.

As a Judy fan since I was 4 yrs old (the year she died), nobody sings that song better than Judy. ❤🎶🎤
    I was a NYC cabaret singer late 80's until 1998...then I became a mom. ❤ 👶
I was at "Don't Tell Mama" singing with my piano player and an elderly man came up to me with tears in his eyes saying, "You are Judy. I know...I am her age. I know how she sounded".😮 He asked me to sing "Over the Rainbow" for him but I said it is taboo for girl singers to sing her song. My piano player jumped in and said, "Oh sweetie, just do it!". So I did. I will never forget that man!!! He made singing career complete!! Such an honor!!!
