I was born in Tenerife (Canary Islands) fortunately here we have everything that you have found in Portugal, affordable cost of living, security, comfort, good level of sanitary facilities and even free of charge and excellent weather throughout year.
I know what you feel because I know US and it is a completely different world. It is wonderful to be able to have a coffee at any time of the year in a square and enjoy the atmosphere. 🎉
Just as I tell you, I know what it feels like and how it is enjoyed. Another important factor is being able to enjoy the local idiosyncrasy, its gastronomy, customs and being able to integrate into them. Thanks for your videos.
I share most of your thoughts on this. You should ever know my land so you could compare. A big hug and my best wishes from Tenerife, Canary Islands. 🇮🇨👍

The American dream has become escaping America for a vast majority of people. More than a few friends from the military never returned to the US. They typically visited the US before getting out of the military and immediately left again with no desire to ever return again. Soon as I can find a Remote position I too will be leaving the US.

In answer to your last question, I am English rather than American but, yes, the past couple of years I have had my eye on Portugal as my doorway out of my withering country. I was half way out to Finland when the Brexit vote hit and removed my right to residency so, tho' the climate is not exactly the snow and ice I love, Portugal's willingness to let money talk when it comes to moving home is very enticing.

Indeed it has enticed foreigners and impoverished the locals. The mantra of let money talk is short sighted. Any country that lets it’s citizens down is ethically unfit. Governance at a very low ebb, bad education, institutions with low salaries for teachers,
Health precarious , as default of state services and low salaries to medics are a fact. Huge debt by government to state institutions guarantees sooner or later strife, instability, rise in crime. This hollow appreciation of countries must end! People must be accountable for in depth knowledge of the real state of affairs of a country. Without it, eventually trodden on citizens will turn against foreigners! The remedy for change is not ignore but evaluate and set accountability for your ethical footprint.
Enough me, myself and I! Portugal is on a down spiral. What they give one day, they take away the next. The essence of the Portuguese has been eroded and being myself half, I bitterly resent this. I do view settling for pollutants very sad.

I understand that fully from a personal perspective. I would think the same when I would live in the US, had to work 24 hours a day (the modern slavery that is going on in the US ). Work life balance is generally much better in Europe, generally much more culture, much better quality of food, healthier life style (pedestrian instead of car centric for example ) plus Portugal offers next to that very low living costs, a nice climate and as you mentioned friendly people. But when it is happening on a large scale like you see in Lissabon, then it hurts the locals too much. Its almost if the Expats concur the city instead of adapting and integrating in the local culture. You see it also in cities like Amsterdam: there the expat communities get so big that english is pushing away the local language and you have to order in english also the Dutch themselves. A lot of expats that are coming to Portugal don't want to explore a new culture: they like cheap houses, nice weather and cheap food I am afraid. A lot of them don't even learn the local language. An attitude that I don't agree with, that I find personally disrespectfull. And I am not a nationalist, me and my wife lived in different countries as well, I like internationality, together we speak six languages fluently (my wife even a little Hebrew, learned on the Kibbutz, so 6.5 languages..) . I am part of that world, but we always respected the local culture and learned the local language. That is what makes it really interesting in my point of view. You see the same unfortunately in tourism; much Northern Europeans that are visiting Portugal or Spain just want to escape the bad weather. A pity, there is so much culture to explore. And also a pity for big parts of coast lines that are destroyed by ugly mass Hotel complexes, especially in Spain. But I am sure it is not the good weather that brought you to Portugal, coming from Israel ;) Good luck in Portugal enjoy the local culture and succes with your channel. / Greetings from Switzerland, ערב טוב, Ronald.

There are plenty of private hospitals, rising prices are everywhere in the world, rentals are more expensive because of high demand, apartments standing empty are because of poor government policy, rise in crime still low, crime changes up and down every year. Economy gets worse, crime goes up but that is everywhere, not only Portugal.

State-owned hospitals are being closed or hacked to make place for privately-owned hospitals. Not that many and, very unreliable. For instance during COVID patients were refused entry at the hospital for various reasons - age, pregnant, type of insurance. So not guaranteed services! As always, private means expensive, change in rates, less conditions accepted and every excuse to say NO! Portugal is a hat in hand country. Its

He said he could not believe how prices for homes, food and other amenities are rising in Portugal. He said he’s from Minnesota and now prices are lower there! It’s not factual that up to 40 everyone speaks English. Depends very much on the type of work they do and their social standing. They do have the best diction. Where are pupils studying 7, 8, years English? State personnel do not speak English and in hospitals English is often not the preferred language. These days there is a tendency for locals to expect foreigners to speak the local language. They are more and more alienated from foreigners as the negative impact on living conditions and cost has impacted heavily on the country. The demands for the language depends entirely on work circumstances. Short-term rentals and tourism running rife as governments concentrate on ‘abstract wealth’ to the detriment of populations. The politics in the USA are very scary now. As a gay couple, we were afraid to remain in the USA

We Portuguese don't have any objections on welcoming foreigners to our country but our government is not making the right policy just letting all kind of people entry event with no visa or working contract and that can be a big issue on a near future. Many are coming from cultures not suitable with our own.

I acknowledge the immense difficulties immigration to Portugal brings for the local people in many ways. At the same time it’s important to keep a balanced perspective and remember that foreigners helped portugal pull out of poverty
