Your art has a very soft and dreamy look. I love it so much ❤️❤️❤️ I also think that the many layered washes made it look more colorful as the color of the older washes seeps through. It makes it look more magical imo.
Your watercolor does look more like digital or gouache, but on the other hand you get these incredible shadings and highlights that make your style so recognizable. Maybe you could find a way to get the watercolor look for instance on washes, and your rendered, layered look on the focal points of your paintings. Anyway I find your style very unique and striking!
Sorry to be offtopic but does any of you know of a way to log back into an instagram account?? I stupidly lost the password. I would love any tricks you can give me!
@Brantley Mauricio Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im trying it out atm. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Also, about paintings having an "ugly stage" - yes! They totally do! When I was painting portraits, I called it "the little dead girl stage." That place between the initial idea and sketch, and completion, where it really does look awful 😨 This part of the work always made me feel like, "oh, no, why did I think I could paint? This is hideous!" But if I worked on through, it always got better. I still experience the "little dead girl stage" in art-making, but it doesn't bother me as much, because I know that's just part of painting. Love tis piece, and I'm so glad you're back, and CONGRATULATIONS on being monetized! 💵💵
This piece is absoultely beatuiful. I love the colors and I also do love your layering technique. It manages to h ave so many colors. Your characters and expressions are just perfect and your detail is fantastic as well. You have a special way of painting that I just love. I am pretty new to watercolors, but I find when i try to layer colors the lower color activates and instead of layering they just mix together.
do you use artist-grade watercolours? or colours that have a lot of filler in them? (certain hard-to-mix colours tend to have a kind of binder in them that make the more like gouache, so that may be why there's lifting) I find with higher quality watercolours there's less chance of accidental lifting :) but it does depend on each individual colour as well! Some are just more staining than others ^^
You can fix the peeling corner of your watercolor block with some PVA/book glue. Put some bulldog clips or a heavy weight on the corner and paint 1-2 light coats of glue on the affected edges. Let it dry overnight and it’s good to go! I’ve made a DIY watercolor block with a more elaborate version of this method and it worked out pretty well. Hope this helps, love your paintings! ❤️
that's a really good idea!!! I have to try this, I was just working on another piece the other day and the paper just slowly FELL OFF the block lol I think I got a defective product 😭 so I might try that, I might just try it with airbrush medium or something lol XD thanks Karen! 💕
I love how many layers you do, I don't think it'd be possible to have the amazing complex colors or beautiful soft blended look that this piece has, it creates so much interest and depth. The white whale you look and think it's white but then you see greens and yellows and blues and purples and that's always something I strive for in painting and you do it so beautifully!
Happy for you Chris. I think you inspire everyone to be a watercolor artist. I just started yesterday with my first watercolor and it was a complete mess, but I will get there. Keep them fantastic tutorials coming.
i love the way you use watercolour with lots of thin layers! you get such a nice harmony of colours all throughout the piece and these kind of unexpected combinations of colours because the negative spaces reveal the colours underneath, and watching you work makes me really want to get into watercolours since i always use acrylics/oils
Remarkable as always Chris! I love your process and this video was very inspiring. I’m not a watercolour artist but I have tried it and while I love the medium, it has always frustrated me. What I love about this painting is what you found challenging 😂 Your process is so unique and the fact that it doesn’t “look like a traditional watercolour” is what I like most about it. Keep it up!
Thanks for coming back. I admit I've never seen your channel before but I saw this pop up in my feed and had to check it out. What a beautiful painting process! I'm trying to get back into watercolor and art in general, so this was very helpful! I'm glad you're finally monetized, too. You definitely deserve it!
I found your art during spring 2018 & seeing this piece was inspirational yet frustrated me. Summer was a terrible art season for me, especially since I had art assignments due by the end of it. I couldn't believe this piece was done in watercolor, the medium I was so in love with but clearly didn't have enough patience to accomplish something remotely similar to this piece. It's my favorite piece you've done so far! I always thought the artists I admire had smooth sailing while planning and painting. This video surprised me, in a good way. I could relate to your frustrations the entire time, thinking about all the artworks I thought were too rigid because of too much planning or were a mess due to the lack of planning. "Should I be more spontaneous" always pops in my mind whenever starting on something new, even a sketch. As of this year, I relied on making thumbnails for almost every painting/drawing & when I couldn't jot several comps, I had to throw it away. Every artists' process is different is something I didn't understand until you stated it. Thank you💖
So good to have you back! I love how you don't avoid talking about the struggles, it's making me feel like you're a real person, not just some amazing, unreachable artist I've been there since the very beginning and I really love your work! Keep going!
I totally understand wanting to have that beautiful watercolor look because I struggle with it too! But I think your layering technique is gorgeous and is distinctly your style. It also adds a lot of depth to your pieces since you layer so many shadows. Honestly I love your style right now!
Welcome baaack! I really appreciate hearing about the "downsides" of this painting. I struggle with the balance between spontaneity and planning myself. I want to think carefully about my work but not overplan the creativity out of it!
First of all, welcome back! I enjoy watching you work. When I was painting watercolors regularly (in a workshop group) we would remove the sheet from the block to tape to a board to paint. Sometimes we would tape it to the board, then spray it with water, and sometimes we would submerge the paper under water and then tape it to the board. I don't remember now what we used for tape (the paper being already wet), as that's been a while ago. Anyway, really glad you're back 💕
Yaaayy!!! A new upload! Thank you for the informative video. I love hearing the process and the challenges you went through in order to create such a beautiful piece and how you still can be spontaneous while planning. Thanks for sharing. Also congratulations for getting your channel monetized!
This illustration is just incredibly beautiful! To be honest, I almost cried at the end of the video because of how skillfully it is painted and how magnificent the colors look! You are a goddess of watercolor, I swear :O
Maybe your most beautiful work so far! The underwater look is spot on and different from the cliche, so success! Congrats on your monetization, wish you a lot of success, your art is amazing!
Hi Chris, so glad you're back!! Absolutely love the painting, all the little details are so cute. So happy to hear about the monetization, got a great excuse to binge-watch all the videos in your channel now.
We unfortunately put my cat down yesterday, he was 18 years old and was chronically ill. I'm currently mourning but when I saw your video I felt happy. I'm glad your back, your videos make me feel good :)
Love the piece Chris, another gorgeous result! And yes painting on a large format is quite a challenge when you are used to paint on smaller ones, the amount of paint to prepare, the larger brushes to use, it is a different experience! I am using the same Arches paper block than the one pictured in your video but always stretch them on their own as they buckle too much on the block for my liking.
welcome back goshh girl , and as always your art is Amazing i don't see anything bad about this paint other than the beauty of it and so happy for the next videos ❤️❤️
This is my favorite print that you've made so far! It seriously looks like you put the most detail and effort into this piece, even though you were unsure of what you were doing. I think the colors were very successful in the end! Keep up the great work :)!
i rarely comment but i'm glad you're finally back! was really missing your paintings and talks. but it's good things have turned out well, congratulations on finally winning the monetization struggle!
You are an amazing artist and this piece is beautiful. Watercolor is hard to master, you will find your way. I am starting out and use artists like you for my inspiration.
So glad your back! This awesome! I love that you do so many washes. My problem is I go in to dark. I also plan out so many things. I sometimes just get spontaneous then if it's something I really like I start all over on better paper etc. I love all the funny details in your pieces. The shell curler is hilarious. That is frustrating about the paper. It's really sketch buying paper online. I got a pad from DeSerres that the corner was crushed. They sent me another no charge with the same corner bent. It was clear it was from the warehouse. They just don't get how important the condition is. Anyway, this looks amazing.
oh my gosh... mine was actually from DeSerres too LOLLLL I mean not to poo-poo on DeSerres, but I'm happy to know it wasn't just me, and that they should prob up their packaging game 🤔 Thanks for watching Emma, I'm really happy to be back!💕
It’s here! I’ve been waiting for this forever. :) Such a gorgeous piece! I envy your patience in the planning stage and think it very much works to your advantage. About the many layers: It kills a bit of the beautiful transparency of watercolor which is why it looks like its own new medium sometimes. The piece came out so beautiful, I like the velvety look and the whole composition is so cute!!
Yay!!! Congratulations!! Looking forward to more videos 😊. And it was a pleasure watching this process... I have my print in its sleeve waiting for my art room to be ready 😊
Such a pleasure to watch a video of you again!! You make me want to ditch my tablet and pick up brushes! Good luck on your journey and congrats for the monetization :)
While watching this video all I wanted to do was scream out and say to you how beautiful your work is (especially this piece), and i understand that in order to get better at your craft you need to critique your work, but I love the look and feel of your work. I believe that the over rendering of your work it gives it a unique quality of a soft and fluffy but rigid and solid feeling at the same time which makes you stand out from everybody else on UA-cam.
I am OBSESSED with your art!! Youre so talented and I love what you choose to create, the characters and scenes etc. STUNNING WORK. Hope you know how fantastic you are❤❤✨✨
Only recently found your channel. Love your work. I sketch IN graphite now n then but I haven't painted in a few years. I used acrylic paint and pastels. Going to try out some watercolor pencils and stuff as soon as I have some free time between mini album projects. All the best from the UK.
This is so beautiful. I love your artwork. Fantastic. The colors are amazing. Detail exceptional. Characters outstanding. Painting Phenomenal. Have a fantastic day.
I totally know the feeling of trying to control watercolor too much. I tend to always over work my watercolor and I miss out on the natural beauty of the medium
I miss your illustration videos! Hope you had fun at your course. And yeah, I hate it when I purchase blocks and it falls off too... I recently had that problem with my Fabriano block and I wasn't even sure if that was what its meant to do... Definitely defeats the purpose of a block. I wonder if theres anything we can do about this problem / it shouldnt be happening that often either.

Ah. Perhaps that is my problem. I do use student grade. Cotman and Guitar mostly.
I'm Korean student who is going to arts high school and major in art. I really really love your paintings and your colors!!!!💛💙💜💚❤
thanks so much!! 💕☺️
Chris you dont know how incredible you are!!!! Dont underestimate your craft!!!!

Everything you said about over preparing for a painting really spoke to me. Thanks for making this video. Your work is beautiful.
thanks so much for watching Leigh! 💕

GIRL! That is such a HUGE compliment when people wonder if it's digital!!!
You’ve taught me so so much about process and how to build pieces up. Thank you so much for these videos and talking us through everything.
happy to hear that Maggie, thanks for watching! :)

☺️💕
So good to have you back!
I love how you don't avoid talking about the struggles, it's making me feel like you're a real person, not just some amazing, unreachable artist
I've been there since the very beginning and I really love your work! Keep going!
thanks so much Weronika 😭💕
Love this video...and love that you question your methods. It’s the only way to grow.
I have no words to express how much I love this piece!
This painting makes me happy and also makes me feel like a little kid again.
Love the honesty, love the painting
I totally understand wanting to have that beautiful watercolor look because I struggle with it too! But I think your layering technique is gorgeous and is distinctly your style. It also adds a lot of depth to your pieces since you layer so many shadows. Honestly I love your style right now!

Welcome back Chris!..... you are absolutely a talented great artist. Believe in yourself and keep going! Love from Vancouver, BC.
Welcome baaack! I really appreciate hearing about the "downsides" of this painting. I struggle with the balance between spontaneity and planning myself. I want to think carefully about my work but not overplan the creativity out of it!
