Mate, by far one of the best off road RC car's you will drive. Predictable, precise and very forgiving! My younger brother had one and it just got better with use. He upgraded to the belt drive, ball race and the newly discovered ESC's of the time. He also bought the Pro shell at the same time and the results were amazing. He was on just about on par with the XLS guys after those mods. This was whilst I (big brother), was at the back of the race with my Tamiya Super Sabre, with plastic bushings and a mechanical speed controller. To be fair, he had been going to the RC club a long time before I was and had saved his pocket money and worked hard for his collection. My interest in RC was ignited when I started driving (my own car) and took over from Dad to take him to the local club and race meetings. I only took him because Mam & Dad would give me petrol money😁. He used to keep his old race tyres and bald them to drift the Optima anywhere he could!! He absolutely loved that car bud! Great days, great buggy and fond memories!! Thanks for that man!! Great video as always Glenn!! Keep them coming!!

The sound of a chain driven Optima chassis :) My Javelin is still my main go to basher. Akira Kogawa and his team sure new how to design a chassis all those years ago. And it will still handle modern brushless setups all these years later.

Both companies created beautiful vehicles, though their philosophies were different. Tamiya went more for fun, while Kyosho seemed to always be more "serious" and competition oriented. With Tamiya I feel like I always have kits that are designed well and look great. With Kyosho, you got great quality as well, but also a vehicle that once dialed in, felt like it could not only compete but also win races.

for me the kyosho legend cars are best looking / build and to drive cars. Tamiya has to do its best to beat them, but they haven't yet.

As I understand these vintage RC's from being a very young child. Kyosho, high-end Japanese racing stuff and Tamiya was a "RC Model" something that you built more than played with. So not surprised you enjoyed the Kyosho stuff.

    • @RCLegends2022

Yeah it’s unfair of me to make a direct comparison tbh, two different company’s will different end users 😎
Both superb at what they do Kyle 😅👊🏻

Kyosho's are proper cars . The build and the performance. Blows tamiya out of the water. I like tamiya for fun. But kyosho just does everything better in my eyes 👌

The javelin is a great buggy to run. Mega fun on grass and dirt surfaces ( that’s where they were designed to be used) a complete pain to clean afterwards the dirt gets every where. Optima pro body and undertray help keep the dirt out. I run a 16x2 mega motor in my Java and it’s proper quick. My Cat with 13.5 brushless motor struggles to keep up. A Glenn Barclay Salute build now that sounds epic.

I have always been a tamiya fanboy, my ultimate was of course the Avante which 30 odd years later i finally own. i LOVE this car. However, I bought and built my first Kyosho this year, the optima mid, this is by far the best i have ever built, this is head and shoulders above tamiya in my opinion but there is no beating the Avante in pure nostalgia and good looks. i would like an egress to complete my boyhood dreams tamiya collection but i also now have my eye on more Kyosho builds. those optima wheels are my favourite and look so good on that Javelin.

I have the same issue with the battery wires. All others are nicely tucked away since I'm using the original driver, but those battery wires are such a eyesore on such a beautiful car. As for speed... well they aren't 6S Arma bashers. I had mine with a 19turn motor on 3s lipo and it was ok. But now with the Kyosho Les Mans brushless 19.5T motor and ESC it's slow. But I don't care, I like the scale speed.

Glenn, go to amazon and buy a cheap set of wheels/tire combo for your running vids. For $ 20 or so dollars you can get a good set of 4 that looks decent gets good traction on most surfaces and last a long time.
I use them a lot with fast and powerful brushless cars and they work very well. I dont know how to let you know the exact list though.

I found a good solution if you don't want to glue tyres. I was looking for a double sided tape to stick some body accessories on with but accidentally bought the bonding stuff they use to bond mobile phone screens in place , it's 1mm wide a 1 mm thick strong and is as tacky AF with a really strong bond which I can see being a really good temporary tyre bond. Would be extremely easy to put around the inside wheel bead and hold tyre to wheel, it'd take a good amount of abuse before failure. Would be perfect for light rc's with lower power levels.

Looks great Glenn, I ran my Ultima for the first time last night (electrics are a hobbywing 1060 and a Kyosho Le Mans 490 with an old school 7.2v stick pack) it runs great but I did notice that the reverse is incredibly slow although to be fair it's not often I go backwards so isn't really an issue. I bought a set of black pepper pots from JC racing paired with schumacher mini pin tyres which look ace, I did have a panic moment when I noticed the steering wasn't working but discovered that there was a stone stuck under the steering linkage (I guess given the open body it's just something that i'll have to get used to 👍) Kyosho are definitely my new favourite. I was always a Tamiya die hard back in the 80s and 90s, but if you buy one of Kyosho's kit models, you can not help but love them. "The Finest Radio Controlled Models" pretty much sums it up. Kyosho did theirselves no end of harm during the 2000s with the awful low spec 1/8 inferno rtr series, and the putrid kyosho brand engines with leaky (air) factory carburetors that were difficult to impossible to get a consistent tune. That said, the MP777 kit was a beauty at the time, although pricy.(add engine, servo's, radio, tyres - the usual racing buggy schtick.

Great video Glenn - did you glue the tyres? I’ve recently built a Turbo Optima and the ride is quite bouncy - I didn’t glue the tyres and wondered if this is why. Personality I think the Top Force Evo and the Super Avante handle better.

Regarding your comment yeah you would definitely expect the other two to be better. The Javelin was an 86 car, the Evo was 91, so another five years of development on the Evo. TD4 is a superb chassis and I love it but can’t really compare the Javelin against it 😅
