The Porsche Cayman and Boxster 981 were the last of the flat-six base model and S versions sold. Since then Porsche has added the GTS, GT4 and Spyder with the flat-six but for the main production cars these are the last of an era. The Boxster, Boxster S, Cayman and Cayman S were sold as a 981 for only a few short years. The prices of these cars have gone up over the past year due to desirability and the fact they have either the base 2.7L 6-cylinder or 3.4L 6-cylinder. Enthusiasts like the sound of these cars and the reliability they provide.
Thanks to www.corcars.com for the loan of this 2015 Cayman

Really awesome review! Boxster/Cayman is the real deal as far as sports cars go. I have definitely noticed the ~20% price increase in the last year or so.

Here in the uk its absolutely the same scenario. Iv been tracking the 987 and 981 prices for last 4 years
I bought my 981 cayman 2015 plate 3years ago...and i can sell it now for the same price i bought it for! Thats nearly 3 years later. In fact i could even get about £1500-£2000 pounds more.
    Astonishing.
I dont think they will go up more...infact i think this is the highest they will go for before they level off and come down again.
At this point i will add...what a car. Those sitting on the fence re a porsche...if you can..go for it. You will never regret the feeling u get when u drive one. And u get it every single time!

I recently got a black 981 Cayman 2.7 and I love every single second driving it. I Also test drove the 3.4 S but I couldn't justify the price difference to the driving experience. The 'base' Cayman is more than fast enough for me and it sounds incredible over 4500 rpm. If only Porsche had fitted shorter gear ratios, then it would be absolutely 100% perfect.

I'd rather be lucky than good... I purchased my CPO 2014 Cayman in Anthracite Brown w/ Luxor Beige interior June of last year at the height of Covid in the US. My 1st Porsche. It was the exact spec I was looking for (sport chrono, 20" Carrera S wheels, and CPO for peace of mind) and only 30miles down-the-road at the dealer. It had 52k miles on it and was selling for $37k. When I showed up, it was a trade-in and it hadn't even been detailed yet. When I attempted to negotiate price, the salesman just chuckled at me ;-) Said 'if I didn't buy it on-the-spot, it would be sold in hours'. He wasn't joking, they had 3 calls from out-of-state while I was finishing paperwork!! I got the last laugh; CPO inspection resulted in 4 brand new tires, rotors, and pads and a replaced CV boot. I've put 10k miles on it in less than a year, and 'Porsche' still puts a smile on my face every time I return to her in a parking lot. 3 mountain trips already including Tail of the Dragon & Blue Ridge Parkway. I'm changing oil every 5k, PDK fluid every 30k, and plan on keeping it until the wheels fall off. There are exactly 8 981 Caymans currently for sale w/ Luxor Beige interiors... in the ENTIRE United States! If you have the means, don't hesitate. Don't treat these vehicles as investments; life is too short! Get out and drive!

Had a 2014 Cayman S, Automotive ADD kicked in and replaced it with a 2015 Corvette, 3 days later I missed my Cayman, so ordered a 2016 Cayman S. These are incredible cars...I've driven multiple 911's, if you only care about the driving experience (and not as much about status and looks) these are the right choice. They are a more connected driving experience than the newer 911's which are larger and have the engine further away.

Ordered it with the PDK, sport tailpipe twin exhaust, upgraded Info Bose stero system, 19" Boxster S wheels, White exterior W/ black leather, Premium Pkg, power steering+, Bi-Xenon and folding mirrors. The car has been fantastic and an absolute joy to drive. Initially, I debated between the 2.7 and 3.5 but sales person convinced me if I wasn't going to track the car it would be a waste to spend the extra $10K. He was certainly right because I've always been into cruising sports cars. Both engines are OUTSTANDING - especially being high quality 6 cylinders.

As a Boxster 986 owner and 911 owner, the Boxster and Cayman is just night and day difference in handling. The Cayman any generation, where ever you aim the nose of that car, it simply goes there effortlessly. The sound right behind your ears is phenomenal. Late braking on turns allows the Boxster or Cayman to take turns and exit much quicker. You feel planted all the time. Baby 911? Negative, can't compare at all. The Cayman is intentionally under powered and less modded from factory bec it will out perform the 911

I’ve got a 987.1 S manual and was test driving 981 S PDK. I wanted to keep the sound from the flat six but with the 981, there was a lot of noise from exhaust and it overwhelmed the howl of the engine. It was also larger and can feel it in handling. I do realize benefits of PDK but my manual feels like a finely tuned rifle. So I decided to keep my 987.1 S knowing bore scoring is imminent but given I only have 59,0000 kms, it’s going to be a long time before it happens. Also going to upgrade PCCM so I can have the latest tech. 9871.1 is obviously older but it’s aged quite well and gives me a sense of nostalgia.

Great review as a 987 owner from the other side of the Atlantic. I'm tinkering with the thought of a moving up to a 911 GTS or some other variant...... it's just hard to justify the additional expense for the sake of sprinting up to the car in front a bit faster. The 911 is not a quiet car unless perhaps spending even more on a turbo for the sake of a few more tenths and a few less decibels. Sadly finding a quiet, cop or camera free road is an increasing rarity. We can but dream......

Excellent review and the best video that I've seen in years on the Porsche 981 base!
I concur wholeheartedly that the flat-6 2.7L is the most bang for your buck that will provide many drivers with lots of glorious smiles per miles. As for me, I've had my 981 Porsche base for 5 years and I cannot see myself ever parting with it because it is that good for daily driving and all around use. No offense to all the 981 S and GTS owners, but if you are not tracking or autocrossing then it just becomes a traffic light and a highway onramp drag machine, which was nonsensical to me.

Despite owning an ‘87 air cooled Carrera, I’ve always preferred the regular Porsche coupés, in model. They appear so much more balanced on the road. But between price, condition and scarcity... I could never afford, nor find one, that was in reasonable condition and/or reasonably priced. And lately, those have even become harder to locate and/or harder to afford. First world problem? Maybe... but so is having Style. Its the price difference between “cool” and “cooler” or ... “coolest” (Turbo/GT3?), I suppose. The price therefore goes up accordingly. Thanks for the video.

Not crapping on the base motor at all but I drove them back to back and an S makes a big difference. Also opted for a manual in my 981 boxster S. The PDK is a great unit but it’s less fun than rowing your own gears imho. I don’t care about marginally better 0-60 times or accommodating people who can’t drive manual. Having said that. I got mine in late Feb and have noticed supply shrinking even since I bought mine. It was time to make this move for me (came out of an M235i).....and if I paid a couple grand premium, so be it.

I understand that not everyone thinks that way, but I find it hard to believe I’d enjoy an automatic (regardless of brilliance) nearly as much as a manual.
For real world driving the point for me is the extra grunt (at any engine speed) I get in the S, coming out of a corner. When you buy them in the secondary market, the gap between the S and non S isn’t bad at all.

No that will not happen. They are still rising and will never drop, ever again. these cars are on their way to get extinct, it's a german manufactured car and german / EU regulations are extremely strict. That's why the 718 already came with the 4 cyl and the next Cayman/Boxster generation after the 718 will be ELECTRIC. As everyone knows the 981s are the last true 6cylinder caymans/boxsters (besides the 718 4.0 GTS which is extremely expensive (911 range)) the prices will NEVER drop again, since everyone is looking for a 981 with low mileage these days and the next years.

Two totally different handling cars. Caymans-even the newer ones-are plenty fast, light and perfectly balanced with their mid engine layout. While 911s-especially the newer (post 997 vintage) have become bigger, heavier and more GT like and will never handle like a mid engine car-simple physics. At the end of the day, both are great cars in their own right-just totally different. And yes-I’ve driven them both-because I own one of each, a 981 Boxster S and a 997 S. When I want to rip on some curves and toss the car around, I reach for the Boxster key. When I want to go for a long cruise with my wife, I reach for the 997 key. The Boxster feels lighter and nimbler than the 997 but the 997 feels more planted than the 981. Again-both great cars.
