Apparantly he quit drinking after a night were him and his friends got a bear so drunk it fell out of a castle window and died.
By the time he turned 18 he won one of Swedens biggest victories in history, the battle of Narva. 10500 swedes vs almost 40000 russians. And they won. Always at the front, dressed in a simple soldiers uniform, fighting where the battle was thickest shoulder to shoulder with his men. He never said "go there" he said "follow me"
They not only won that battle, they utterly crushed their enemies at that battle. Through the sheer shock of the first assault from Charles XII's army the Russian army tried to flee over the ice cold river sorrounding the city, but the bridges couldn't support the weight of all the soldiers. So the battle ended with almost 10K dead russian compared to 600 dead swedes resulting in a 1:20 death ratio and a chrushing defeat for the Russians.
You can't go wrong with Sabaton. I love their live performance of "En livstid i krig" in Gothenburgh from the great tour. Remember to turn on captions as it is in swedish. They also have their own history channel here on YT where they talk about the history behind each of their songs.
Yup! Em Livstid i Krig has much different lyrics than its English counterpart though, I find it a lot more moving. A Lifetime of War is the broad scope of the war, how monarchs send off their people to die for them year after year. Em Livstid i Krig is an individual Swedish soldier realizing there is no glory. They went from their family at a young age and saw what war was like. It talks about how it can destroy someone, and though they give their life no one misses them or will remember their own death. Very, very powerful.
You should also react to the Swedish version: the Swedish version is actually done slightly differently and the lyrics change to reflect the change in perspective (English vs Swedish perspective specifically). The tone is brighter and implies a more positive opinion and view of King Charles whereas the English version is darker and more menacing, almost as though from the English's view
I think Swedish version, of the whole album really, is WAY better than the English one. The English singing sounds a bit clumsy and way less epic than Swedish.
The Swedish version of Carolus Rex is the best album in my book. It’s hard to imagine somone take that throne from them. Carolus Rex - the whole album is a masterpice.
The song is expressing the mentality of absolute monarchy. Like many other monarchs, Charles held absolute power, which means that no one stands over the king but God. Not all countries had this system or it was different during different periods of time. This song is Sabaton's way of expressing the mentality of that system, along with the Great Northern war that occurred during Charles' reign in which he got a great reputation all around Europe as a warrior and strategist. He is known for that, so...
@@darkwolf4434 Charles' father was the one who introduced absolute monarchy in Sweden with Louis XIV of France as inspiration. It was the political trend in Europe of that time.

Yes, the man in the painting is Carolus, that painting is actually located about 35 miles from where I'm at :), I've probably looked at it IRL back in the late 70's. Rex is the latin word for king, and Carolus is supposed to be the medieval Latin form of Charles. Some tracks I can recommend from Sabaton... The Lion from the north (About Gustav Adolf, another Swedish king just prior to Carolus, from the same album) Resist and Bite (Dutch 40 soldiers holding the border against an overwhelming german attack) Far From Fame (About Karel Janoušek, a Czechoslovakian soldier, Joakim has Czech ancestry) Angels Calling feat. Apocalyptica (I'd say it's about how it was to be in the trenches)
The narrative of "god's chosen" specifically refers to how Carolus Rex, Charles XII, subverted the power of the church by, during his coronation, placing the crown upon his own head - crowning himself. He was thus not bestowed the protection of god through the decree of the church, as was the norm at that time, but by his own hand: severing the line of God -> Church -> King and instead creating a rulership that, ostensibly, was vested by the power of god directly.
@@dahlizz99 I'll be better prepared, and it won't happen to me. That was what Napoleon probably told himself. Of note Karl XII, Napolean, and Hitler, Napolean was the only one to take Moscow, which was worthless after the Czar's forces stripped it and burned most of the important stores and buildings. The Russians mark the birth of Imperial Russia with the defat of Karl XII at Poltava. Even named several ships after that battle.
Fun fact the album that this song comes from was originally recorded in Sabaton native language swedish. It was then rerecord/translated to English and both were released at the same time.

"He'd won a lot of battle" Not yet (by the song) he hadn't, this is about his coronation, when he was 15. All he had done was being born to the prior king... and that was all he needed. "Crowned by God not by the church" :- the monarch rules by divine mandate, he and his bloodline were put upon the earth with the sole intention to rule, no one, not even the church, can deny him his throne.
My all time favorite band!! 🤘🥰🤘 They have a UA-cam channel dedicated to short videos explaining the history behind their songs. I've learned more from it than I did in high school history class
He was such a great king. He defended Sweden against a coalition of Denmark-Norway, Russia, Poland-Lithuania, Prussia and Saxony. He defeated the Russians army at 40 000 at Narva with his 10 000. Then later went on to Krakow and defeated Poland-Lithuania with 8 000 troops. He marched on Russia in the winter and won battle after battle. It was then they began using scorched earth tactics and it worked, even so he still marched on and eventully got beaten at the battle of Poltava. Still was a pretty even battle but Sweden lost almost all of our troops and we have never had a huge population so we couldn't replace the ones we lost and Russia took over as the big power in northern europe. But do understand that it was at such a time when Sweden with its relatively small population could stand up to Russia one on one. So it's really impressive Charles XII did what he did and defended Swedens borders against a far larger force.
Yes! he also refused to be crowned as the tradition said, by the church. He placed the crown on his own head outside the church. Then march in and declared himself king. At age 15 xD
I recommend Long Live the King which gives more story on Carolus Rex. I also recommend En livstid i krig live, just put subtitles on as they have provided them on the video.
He was called Carolus(Karl in latin) Rex(The reigning king), when the former king died and Karl XII was to become king the enemies of Sweden were licking their lips of joy, expecting to easily take over Country pretty much because he was only 15 years old (which is what he sings in the song. they thought I was too young to rule the land) What they had not expected was for him to be a masterful and fearless strategist.. he had been studying war strategy and tactics since a very young age

The live video of this song from their stage perspective is pretty nuts. Now im sure you've already been told this but just in case, if you're interested in knowing more check out the Sabaton History channel where they explain the history behind the song
Regarding their music, they have basically said that they are not a band who plays innovative complex music, what they always give is good solid power metal with interesting historical lyrics.
At least you can understand the lyrics when listening to sabbaton. Metal bands often have the problem, that their lyrics get scrambled by too loud an instrumental and bad pronounciation.
Im a Swede and i gotta say that Charles the 12 gave us enormous groujds to stand on by taxes and by making sure his father conscription service stood firm also many of the economics in sweden today are based on his foresight even when he basically was exiled from home.

To explain the naming thing up until quite recently translating royal names was common. Karl is the swedish name charles in english carolus in latin. Another example is tsar Nicholas 2nd. Who in russian is named something to the tune of Nikolai.
Another great Sabaton song that also has an amazing bit of history is "Inmate 4859" and I'd definitely do some research on that song afterwards as well.
As a Finnish guy I have to raise few of the songs they made from Finland and Finnish people: Soldier of 3 armies, Talvisota(winter war) and White death.
Mr Boyd Don't know if anyone has explained this but it's pronounced like it it spelled sa- ba- ton. The Sabaton is a type of armor worn in the foot. Just discovered Sabaton a year ago and they are EPIC!
Carolus Rex believed in the divine right of kings; that he was the absolute authority within his kingdom and his power was ordained by God. He shared power with absolutely no one. He was also the last monarch in history to die in battle.
Well the kicker and reason why he says "Chosen by God and not by the church" is because the church had to ordain kings through coronations acknowledged by a bishop or cardinal (or sometimes the pope) but Carolus said "F-that" and ordained himself without the church to "officially" ordain him as he claims "I was crowned by God and not by the church for my power is divine". Saying he doesn't want a "mortal man" (a bridge between God and himself as the catholics called the clergy) to tell him what God already chosen. He also used his religious cult of personality to wage massive wars (as seen later in the album). Absolute mad lad for the time and hats off because this kid (he was only 15) managed to almost take over the world had it not be for the Russians (and possible friendly fire) killing him.
Karl IX buld up an army that called Caroleans in Swedish Karoliner. His son, Karl XII had a army that no one in Europe can match. Karoliner was Top Notch in warfare..
(Just a sidenote: In Spanish, yes, you're right. In English it's "Charles" and in Swedish it's "Karl". Carolus is Latin; "Carolus Rex" simply means "King Charles".)

the carolus rex album is a whole story about the rise and fall of the swedish empire. carolus rex is portrayed as an arrogant king who leads to the empire's demise in the 2nd half.
He inherited an empire surronded by enemies while Sweden only had a tiny population. As such he had to make do with a small but indeed very professional army in his attempts to hold it all together.
This was one of the first Sabaton songs I came across. Though to be specific, it was a Warhammer 40k fan based music video with the God Emperor of Mankind as Carolus Rex. Other great Sabaton songs - Got Mit Unz (god is with us) - Last Stand - Winged Hussars - To Hell and Back - Royal Guard - Aces in Exile
I am a 61 year old lover of what is called string band music (think banjos and fiddles...but NOT Bluegrass)....and a lover of history since I was in my single digits....and even I like Sabaton...btw, back in the day scholars and rulers sometimes latinized their names...hence Charles XII was known as Carolus Rex (Charles (the) King) ....and it was the age of kings claiming divine right or ordination by God (born to be king, that is his claim)..not being a god king...
When doing videos about Sabaton songs I would greatly recommend you watch Sabaton history's UA-cam channel as well it will give an extra dimension of understanding since they there provide historical background to every single song they have made in about 15-20 min videos. I consider my self an history buff and if you also are an history buff it will be very informative for you too.
Charles is the English version of his name, Carolus being the actual name (or sometimes just Carl).. Just like in Finnish we changed King "George" to "Yrjö" (TBH, they don't even sound the same phonetically)
Id heavily recommend, if you haven't already, listen to "Carolus Rex" in Sabatons native Swedish. The songs beat and flow synergizes heavily to Swedish more than it does to English.
He made Sweden to a superpower in 1800 century(1700-tal) Sweden was during this time Norway,Sweden,Finland,The Baltic countries,Denmark...northern shores of Poland and Germany
I didnt know you started reacting to Sabaton. I still dig it that you skip most of the chit chat for a reaction video. Having said that. I'm going to check out some of your other Sabaton reactions I'm behind on IMMEDIATELY.
Sabaton has a lot of cool songs and the historical themes make it a learning experience without you even knowing it. Songs like the "Night Witches" (All women Russian Bomber Squadron WW2), The Last Stand (1527 Defense of the Pope) and "Ghost in the TRenches" (WWi Canadian legend Francis Pegahmagabow) are some of my favorites. They even have one based on the Nazgul in Lord of the Rings - "Shadow"
"Rex" is king in Latin, and Carolus was the Latin name of the Swedish king who you in English call Charles; his Swedish name was Karl. So Carolus Rex means King Charles, or King Karl. Edit: Now after watching a couple more of your videos I understand that you are obviously highly educated and probably knew this already. I'm sorry if I sounded like a condescending dick; that was never the purpose. Anyway, as to Sabaton songs you might want to check out, Talvisota is one of my favorites. Double edit: the name "Karl" itself is of old Scandinavian origin and originally used to mean "Chief" or a king. By the time king Karl the 12th was in power, the name had probably all but lost its original meaning and become a common name at least in the upper ranks of society.
Carolus in this case is likely referring to King Charles but could also relate to most European kings as carolous is an all encompassing term for king. Used by many in Europe: Russia, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, all have words that can be argued to sound like this. Hard to say
The "ruling alone" bits probably allude to the fact he had no interest in marrying and producing an heir. When he died the crown passed to his sister, Ulrika Eleonora. She is so far the last female monarch of Sweden.
no way!! this was unexpected but very welcome :O Sabaton are huge fans of history you should try their songs A Lifetime of War, Bismarck and Fields of Verdun
The first time I seen SABATON WAS IN 2013 IN CONCERT WITH ICED EARTH, and NOW SABATON IS MY FAVORITE BAND TO SEE IN CONCERT. 🤘🏻🤘🏻, and if you want to know the meaning of the songs check out SABATON HISTORY
Carolvvs rex, is latin for king charles, might be congusing when the name gets changed, but it was reuired back then if you wanted to be recognised as male by the other parts of the world, where latin was spoken. sweden was also one of them, they did not only speak swedish in sweden, latin was appropiate for any educated man to speak
Funny you say it’s meant for a soundtrack. It actually is on the soundtrack to the game Europa universalis 4. Developers of the game are also Swedish and include a few Sabaton songs
Not sure if others posted this (almost certainly), but Sabaton is pronounced sa-bat-on. Sa like in "SAt dawn", bat like the baseball variety and on like ... well on top of something. Stress on the first A. It refers to a medieval piece of plated foot armour - basically a knights shoe/shoe-cover.

This is what I work out to, and this is responsible for some of my most impressive feats of strength in the gym.
Sabaton songs are a blast
As a Finnish guy I have to raise few of the songs they made from Finland and Finnish people: Soldier of 3 armies, Talvisota(winter war) and White death.
I considered not listening to Sabaton once, BUT THEN THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVED!!!!
Idk if you figure out later on in the video but its SAHB-AH-TON
best swedish rockband ever
History through Metal.
Karl IX buld up an army that called Caroleans in Swedish Karoliner. His son, Karl XII had a army that no one in Europe can match. Karoliner was Top Notch in warfare..
The most Epic king of Sweden. 15 yrs old and wrecking world powers
He was one of Europes last warrior kings, maybe the last. He faught alongside his men.
Basically it was a power struggle between the King/Crown and the church in Sweden at the time.
Yes the king of Sweden is Carlos the name of the band performing The song is called Sabaton it's a piece of armor that covers the top of your foot
(Just a sidenote: In Spanish, yes, you're right. In English it's "Charles" and in Swedish it's "Karl". Carolus is Latin; "Carolus Rex" simply means "King Charles".)
@@FamousGirlfriend not quiet charles is a french-english name of same meaning as Karl and in english speaking countries they also have The name Karl/Carl
the carolus rex album is a whole story about the rise and fall of the swedish empire. carolus rex is portrayed as an arrogant king who leads to the empire's demise in the 2nd half.
He inherited an empire surronded by enemies while Sweden only had a tiny population. As such he had to make do with a small but indeed very professional army in his attempts to hold it all together.
Yeap, definitely need more Sabaton here.
This was one of the first Sabaton songs I came across. Though to be specific, it was a Warhammer 40k fan based music video with the God Emperor of Mankind as Carolus Rex.
Other great Sabaton songs
- Got Mit Unz (god is with us)
- Last Stand
- Winged Hussars
- To Hell and Back
- Royal Guard
- Aces in Exile
I am a 61 year old lover of what is called string band music (think banjos and fiddles...but NOT Bluegrass)....and a lover of history since I was in my single digits....and even I like Sabaton...btw, back in the day scholars and rulers sometimes latinized their names...hence Charles XII was known as Carolus Rex (Charles (the) King) ....and it was the age of kings claiming divine right or ordination by God (born to be king, that is his claim)..not being a god king...
King Charles XII, became king at 15 years old, wondered why he had to wait that long. Dude was a gangster.
Rex is a fkn legend!
Even now the King of Sweden is Karl and the King of England is Charles; both names literally meaning "King".
You got it right Boyd! Sabaton does power metal in the good old european way, but with a very nordic folk-music kind of twist! I like them!
My favorite Sabaton song is 7734. I highly recommend you review it
7734 is top notch stuff
Sabaton and Iced Earth are great historic story tellers
Their 11th album releases next year - already recorded. You have some catching up to do...
That pronunciation of Sabaton was, unnerving
Charles is the English version of his name, Carolus being the actual name (or sometimes just Carl).. Just like in Finnish we changed King "George" to "Yrjö" (TBH, they don't even sound the same phonetically)
Also, Christian monarchs(in middle ages and before) had the right to rule ordained by God, Pope being their vessel.. hence chorus..
Resist and bite is my personal favorite
Id heavily recommend, if you haven't already, listen to "Carolus Rex" in Sabatons native Swedish. The songs beat and flow synergizes heavily to Swedish more than it does to English.
Cool vid bro. Keep reacting
He made Sweden to a superpower in 1800 century(1700-tal)
Sweden was during this time Norway,Sweden,Finland,The Baltic countries,Denmark...northern shores of Poland and Germany
He probably did but you may have informed some wievers that didn't know this.
A lot of the lyrics in this song (both in the Swedish and English versions of the song) are direct quotes of King Charles XII (Carolus Rex).
finally another sabaton video
Carolus in this case is likely referring to King Charles but could also relate to most European kings as carolous is an all encompassing term for king. Used by many in Europe: Russia, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, all have words that can be argued to sound like this. Hard to say
yes Carolus is Charles in latin and rex is king.
This english version is from the kings perspective and the same song in Swedish is from the Soldiers.
The "ruling alone" bits probably allude to the fact he had no interest in marrying and producing an heir. When he died the crown passed to his sister, Ulrika Eleonora. She is so far the last female monarch of Sweden.
no way!!
this was unexpected but very welcome :O
Sabaton are huge fans of history
you should try their songs A Lifetime of War, Bismarck and Fields of Verdun
Speaking of sound tracks, they have done songs for world of warships and world of tanks. Look up Bismarck and steel commanders and gove them a go.
The first time I seen SABATON WAS IN 2013 IN CONCERT WITH ICED EARTH, and NOW SABATON IS MY FAVORITE BAND TO SEE IN CONCERT. 🤘🏻🤘🏻, and if you want to know the meaning of the songs check out SABATON HISTORY
great birthday present!!! winged hussars next maybe..or gustavos adolphus
The album in Swedish is completely different than in English in tone of the lyrics.
I couldn't click fast enough once i saw it's a sabaton reaction
Do as many Sabaton reactions as you like. I’ll watch them all!
