Why Max Verstappen Didn’t Get A Penalty For His Grid Box Position
Вставка

- The last three races have seen drivers having issues with their Grid Box positions, starting with Esteban Ocon then Fernando Alonso, which prompted the FIA to make the painting grid positions larger.
But viewers spotted Max Verstappen at the Australian Grand Prix almost out of his position, but yet no penalty - here's the reason why.

It's always funny to me when Verstappen is on the exact edge (in this case literally) of the rules, to great risk of penalty to himself, and just nails it, yet people start yelling it's unfair. Verstappen is the catalyst for a couple of rule changes in F1, which is a testament to his skill in driving at the absolute limit of the rules, NOT unfair conduct.
Most funny one to me is the one how he did like driving next to them (mostly hamilton but there are also once with leclerc) before restart with a safety car... that they are now not allowed driving next to each other anymore. It gave him most of the time a disadvantage, but more get into there heads then anything.
But for sure there are tons of examples of rule changes due to Max.
Yeah cause everybody is just peaceful and quiet when Lewis does something...lol It's only Max.
I think for many its about the interpretation of the same rules for different drivers/team and the outcomes. Of late, one team seems to always come off better than the others. That's life
@@gaycha6589 Oh like how Mercedes was allowed to keep the DAS system for the whole season but Red Bull had to change their wings the next race? Btw both were seen as "not at fault" but rather "ambiguous" when it came to overstepping the rules.
Yea it's funny but also kind of sad because in any other case this would be applauded as impeccable execution, high risk/high reward in the heat of battle. He gained an advantage on merit and won the restart against the better starting mercedes. That moment could have won the race if the accidents happened a sector later. A pretty toxic part of his job environment if you ask me having to deal with as much stirred up bs from media and fans.

Rules aside, this is entitely monitored via sensors and therefore cannot be questioned whether he did something out of the rulebook or not, cause sensors would automatically indicate any wrongdoing. Literally nothing to think about here. I reckon Hamilton fans are paranoid believing detection devices are not working as intended or something. Flat earthers of F1.

I would love to see a video about all the cameras on the car. are they mandatory? have the teams a say in it. what about the weight they add? are those parts that contain the cameras all the same or do teams design them themselves?
Would actually be an interesting video
Yes they are mandatory, no teams have no say in it. About the the parts of the camera’s i dont know.
My wild guess is: the cameras in the car need to have specific requirements. They get a blueprint of designated spots they have to place them but teams can figure out how. Like pretty much every detail in an f1 car
They have designated spots on the cars where the teams need to put housings however not all cars have cameras in those housings. Generally the higher you finished last year the more actual cameras will be on the car (The 360 cam being an example of a cam that not all cars have).

We need MORE complicated rules that have no bearing on the outcome of the race! In a sport measured in thousandths of a second there should be MORE 5 second penalties for things like being being slightly over a line you can't see!
Yeah it’s funny that in one of the most expensive forms of Motorsport, there isn’t some kind of system using laser beams and a position on the car that illuminates when it’s lined up, or the opposite, 2 lasers on the car that activate to align to a painted spot on the wall, and a spot on the road, and they could be guided in. We can land jet aeroplanes on a moving ship in the ocean but stopping a race car on the line makes people lose their shit.
Thousandths of a second? When was the last time you saw a race that close? You could use a sundial to time the differences between cars these days, they are that far apart! lol

@@drews5569 Yes, many times and never seen them start a lap from the start box, have you? Your answer is of course no, because they do qualifying off a flying lap don’t they. Excellent explaination, thanks Mattamys for creating and sharing this video ☺️
explanation
Max forgot that he needs to pretend to not be a robot and placed his car perfectly.
Him and Hamilton did this back in 2021 and I remembered it people complaining about their positions
and now explain about the 10 car lenght before the restart with the safety car, because even in the broadcast people were confused
If you mean the two starts in the "middle" of the race it's pretty clear, the lights were out on the car and at that point it works like a formation lap (Leader dictates the pace, no overtaking). If you mean on the last "lap" then yeah nobody knows, probably just the stewards having too much going on to be able to handle safety car infringements as well 😂
Because usually when the cars are following the safety car they are preparing for a rolling start. In this case it was just a formation lap to the grid
39.13 When the clerk of the course decides it is safe to call in the safety car the message "SAFETY CAR
IN THIS LAP" will be sent to all teams Competitors via the official messaging system and the car's
orange lights will be extinguished. This will be the signal to the teams Competitors and drivers
that it will be entering the pit lane at the end of that lap.
At this point the first car in line behind the safety car may dictate the pace and, if necessary, fall
more than ten car lengths behind it.
In order to avoid the likelihood of accidents before the safety car returns to the pits, from the
point at which the lights on the car are turned out drivers must proceed at a pace which involves
no erratic acceleration or braking nor any other manoeuvre which is likely to endanger other
drivers or impede the restart.

There should be some sort of sensor in the yellow line that sends a signal to the driver when they’re lined up on it correctly. Something like a beep that gets faster the closer you get, kinda like a lot of backup cameras in cars nowadays. Or some visual indicator on the wheel.
We definitely have the technology to do this, but I guess $$$ is the limiting factor.
Good video.
Are you sure that Alonso’s front tyres aren’t touching the white line in Jeddah?
It seems to me like they are and in that case it would not be an infringement.
The specific rules refer to ANY part of the contact patch being outside, not any part being inside. If 50% of contact is on/inside the white lines, it is a penalty because of the other half. Even if it is 99%, there is a penalty applied.
I'm not a fan of grid boxes. If they're behind the white line, then it's good with me
Yep. Keep wheels behind the front line, keep still until green. Pretty simple.
Next race all the driver should be more forward in their grid box, but making sure of contact. That said if a driver picked up a penalty for a minuscule mistake after a race RE-START that didn't have anything to do with him how unfair would that have been? With all the chaos we saw with race restarts yesterday, and in the past, I think all race restarts should be rolling and no overtaking until first lap completed. Lighter cars, fresher tyres and desperate drivers calls for more mistakes.
The drivers already go as far forward as they dare. But if a driver did get a penalty for going over the line, it wouldn't be unfair, the rules are rules.
Liberty Media could hire 20 cheerleaders to stay in front of each place of the grid and help the drivers steer the car into place

There are so many cameras on the cars these days. Why not have a camera mounted on the side of the. Ar that lines up exactly where the yellow line is? People have to be reminded that F1 cars have a front blind spot of about 100m, meaning they can't see anything clearly unless it's 100m away from them. This was demonstrated on a video the official F1 channel made on cockpits some time ago. Considering that yellow line was painted there so drivers could see where to align their cars, it would make sense for them to err in the side of caution and try to place their front tires on it as it's easier for them to gauge that distance from the cockpit.

Max's tire does not touch the ground outside the white box line.
Alonso's tire (because the tire is a tire and not a ball) touches the ground outside the box lines.
The tires are round from front to back (you can easily roll them forward and backward), but they have a running surface that is quite wide across the width of the tire (you can't roll an F1 tire sideways, it will fall over) , so that you can stand on the side of the line, while your tire also has contact with the ground outside the box lines.
So max's tires didn't touch the ground outside the box, no penalty.
Alonso's tire hits the ground outside the box, penalty (unfortunately).

It's so marginal that I'm not for penalties for starts and restarts but for the FIA to EDUCATE! Clearly, they're failing to educate as drivers aren't sure where they're supposed to start and what the restart rules are as Verstappen was quoting rules that weren't being followed which he was incorrect. His race director didn't correct him so that means they didn't know either. Worse of all, we the fans aren't sure so that hurts the legitimacy of the sport. Can someone explain to me why Alonso got a penalty there. Max's tyre is on the line with an overhang and Alonso's is the same but just to the side. What's the difference here?
... its to the side?
Alonso had tire touching outside of the grid box which triggered the sensor causing him to get a penalty
Max's tire does not touch the ground outside the white box line.
Alonzo's tire (because the tire is a tire and not a ball) touches the ground outside the box lines.
The tires are round front to back (you can easily roll them forward and backward), but have a running surface that is quite wide across the width of the tire (you can't roll an F1 tire sideways, it will fall over) , so that you can stand on the side of the line, while your tire also has contact with the ground outside the box lines.
Max's tires didn't touch the ground outside the box, no penalty.
Alonzo's tire hits the ground outside the box, penalty (unfortunately).
this is due to how contact patches on a tire works, as the tire is wide, its horizontal contact patch extends outside of the box in alonso's case, but its length wise contact patch is shorter, and therefore max's "overhang" isnt actually touching the surface outside of the box and therefore no sensors are triggered
@@darkace6401 It triggered a sensor? Then why did it take them so long to start investigating the issue? STOP INVENTING.
Hold up, so you can go forwards and keep your wheels on the line, reducing your race distance by a few centimetres and gaining an advantage, that’s perfectly okay. But being a few millimetres left or right of centre, possibly making your race distance longer is not okay.
Okay then
when you put it that way it really doesn't make sense at all, the FIA just can't make up its mind can it?
the rule basically says any part of the wheels touching the outside of the box will result in a penalty. which means max didn't break the rules since his tires were only touching the white line . on the other hand Alonso's wheels were partially outside of the box and that's why he got the penalty. everyone can take the risk and do what max did but teams tend to play it safe. and the reason why cars can't be too far left/right is for safety reasons. there must be enough space between cars and the track limit so that in case if someone is unable to move the other drivers can go around safely.
Don’t blame max for understanding the rules and taking advantage while other drivers are falling asleep behind the wheel. Everybody has the freedom to do it, it’s not against the rules when tires touch the white line. It’s only when the contact point goes over the lines that the driver gets penalized

It would seem simpler just to remove the outside line from each grid box, and extend the front line to whichever side of track is nearest. If a driver wants to start on the edge of the track, let them. There will still be a good safe margin between left and right columns of cars.
Exactly. There is one line. You need to be Xcm close to it with your front wheel and the centre line of your closest front wheel cannot pass it, and you cannot move at all before the green light. I guess you need to add some kind of limit angle wise, or maybe decrease the angle after each group of 4 starters or something, but if I’m on pole and there is obviously more traction in one area to the left, or I have a better start by starting on an angle, well, I put it in pole, it should be my call.
The problem with F1 is that so many rules are ambiguous and situational.. and penalties depend on race strewards' point of view rather than a slam dunk pen using the rules.. sometimes it's 5 sec, or 10 sec.. sometimes 2 penalty points or no penalty points at all..

I'd wager he wasn't penalized because it was teamate on teammate, and that's rarely penalized
because he would just get 1st place anyways so it doesn't really matter 🤣
Did you see clearly that Alonso side tyre were touching the line as well ? Why is he given a penalty? Look carefully at the video on his left tyre touching the white line.
Part of the Alonso's tire was touching outside the grid box, hence why he was given a penalty.
Max' tires on the other hand did not touch beyond the grid box.
If the left tyre was just touching the white line he wouldnt have received it but this time it was over the white line..look clearly
In that picture, Gasly seems also to be ahead of the yellow line. Needs to be clarified or next race everybody will play with this loophole in the rules.
Did you actually watch the video? The Yellow line is a guideline, the white line is what it's about.
And on the line is still within the box pretty simple.
@@Minifliek Did you actually read my comment? Cleary on the image of the video there are cars playing the rules to the limit (Verstappen and Gasly) and others placing the car about 50cm behind where the yellow reference line is (the rest of the cars in the image). Next race obviously this will be discussed during FIA Driver Briefing, as it seems that in previous races even some cars where a little bit offside of the white line but nobody was paying any attention, while other drivers thought they where supposed to place the car in the yellow line. In fact, Ocon admitted after the penalty in the first race “I’ve also been doing the same thing for the start position and all the way through last year I never had a penalty, so all these things are new apparently". So FIA should clarify the rules to the drivers and warn them that from now on the rules for grid positions will be enforced.
@@ManuLH-bh6se i would take the drivers words with a grain of salt, gridbox penalties are sensor driven and automated. Additionally, no drivers WANT to get close as gasly and max did, the risk reward does not add up, if you look at their on boards it was not purposeful, both came to a stop closer to the yellow guide, but then rolled a bit too far ahead.
@@ManuLH-bh6se I did read it an pointed out the yellow line is just a guideline, it's the white lines that matter.
The drivers should and will exactly know what the rules say.
But since it's hard to see maybe sometimes they are behind and sometimes ahead of the yellow line.
But that doesn't matter, since it's the white outline that determines if you are in the correct position.
There have already been talks with the FIA about these boxes and their positioning hence why they widened them this race and onwards.
Max will destroy ever record Lewis has
If he stays in F1: Yes. That's the thing though. On multiple occasions Max has mentioned he wants to compete in other classes as well and especially in the last year he's repeatedly hinted at a departure from F1, including a few days ago when he said he'll leave F1 if they change it too much (sprint races, two qualifications, all that jazz). The dude has other aspirations and he doesn't give a rats ass about those meaningless statistics us petty social media losers love to throw around. He said his ultimate goal in F1 was to become world champion and now he has achieved that.
