Really it is the mood I am in for which version I would listen to. The 2017 version with the jazz band makes me think I am in a smoky jazz cafe, sipping cognac and enjoying life. That 2017 concert, with 11 year old Angelina, is my favorite concert as the jazz band and Angelina fed energy off one another for a remarkable 13 song concert. The 2018 version with the orchestra was a concert to support her "It's Magic" album. The orchestra played on each track for that album. The 2017 version is my choice, if I could only listen to one song for the rest of my life, because I find it very relaxing and introspective and fits the type of person I am.

Impossible to choose between two masterpieces. Thanks for putting them together and providing good comments on her vocal subtleties and art. How does a girl her age know all this? Angelina's vocals are so nuanced and original. Love the smaller band and the larger, but if I had to vote for one, it would be the one with the trombone solo. Today, she's attending Coachella. One day she'll be headlining there and elsewhere.
I agree that they both are excellent and the orchestra in the second version is more dramatic. The main reason that I like the first version is that it is closer to my very favorite version by Julie London. But Angelina's voice in both is just that, Angelina's voice - enough said.
I think the differences in her singing are more guided by the arrangement than her developing. The sheer power of that big orchestra does not allow the usual subtleties from her and she adapts by bringing in more force in differentiating the voice registers. The first version is much freeer, more jazz if you will, and gives her more room for runs and improvisation. How a pre-teen girl can handle these settings to perfection is the most shocking thing. Both where great examples of jazz. So creative with musicians getting into a fabulous groove highlighting different colors. Almost cinematic with layers of creative interpretations. Angelina belongs here in this pocket jazz made new. She can sing anything she wants. I’m sure surprises will always be a practice with AJ much like her last Norway concerts last summer 😊
Sheesh, how do you decide??? Both versions are really good! If I HAD to choose, I would pick the second one just because I loved the James Bond type of arrangement of the music. Then again, the first one with a small band accompany and that slow jazzy/bluesy feel to the song was mellow and cool. I take it back, I can't choose! LOL

I do like the orchestra arrangement in the second performance, but Angelina's voice gets lost a little more when the orchestra gets loud. Angelina does something wonderful by tailoring the first performance for a jazzier ensemble, while bringing a more classic big band approach to the 2018 offering. And the band played with a LOT of staccato, but that allowed Angelina to play either before or after the beat and made it a bit more jazzy. These are two very different bands with different arrangements and Angelina delivers two different appropriate choices for the occasion. Simply put, the first was a laid back soulful approach while the second was classically elegant. Angelina is a master of creating diverse tonal qualities and in the first song she's a bit aspirate with her voice placed toward to back of her throat whereas the second is more connected chest voice placed more toward the roof of her mouth and her nasal cavity. I think she played to the style of the different arrangements. With the jazz band she brought an easy jazz style with scoops and slides and basically flat out jammed with the trombone player. While with the larger army band and the James Bond arrangement she presented a more classic throwback style from the big band days. If you asked me which one would I like ... yes please; I'll take both.
I loved the 1st one best and agree with the raspiness better in the 2nd. Also she needed to sound bigger in the 2nd version so that scarificed a bit of the emotion which needed that raspiness to carry it off in the emotional key of the tune. Of course she is always so amazing in anything she touches and very intentional in how she combines so many elements.
I've always felt that Julie London's rendition was the 'Gold Standard' for this song, and I've heard many a-List artists perform it besides Julie's release of the record in, i believe, 1955. Well, after hearing this, Angelina rates my 'Platinum Standard' for the song, it's just that good. To reach the level of reigning 'Queen Of Jazz' at such a young age is beyond mind boggling. I can listen to her singing songs like this day and night, never tiring of her. She just has this way of soothing me like no other artist has ever done to me, much less one so young.

I love both of these but I love the 1st version with the small jazz band the most. The slow. sultry, smooth version is my cup of tea. She is in her element there & I feel like she is improvising on the fly while the band follows whatever she does. In the Military Band version, everyone was playing the sheet music perfectly as was Angelina. The band was too loud in the mix of this fan video, so instead, I'm comparing the 1st one with the audio from her album where the mix is perfect. But even with the perfect audio of the album, I still prefer the 1st concert version where she's singing it as she is feeling it, while the 2nd concert & the studio version for the album, she's singing it like she rehearsed it.
Ok, I gave my opinion a tiny, teeny, little bit early; I love the military band version, too! It is also fascinating to watch the musicians’s faces and demeanours, it is very clear they have tremendous respect for Angelina! Oh, and she told the first clarinettist “to go for it”! Hey Jesse, Nice to see you back doing an Angelina video. There are so many that they could keep you busy for a full year everyday! And each one is as good as the next. These magic years of Angelina from ages 8 to 12 produce some of the most impressive performances. Not that everything after wasn't impressive, but the skill level that she had attained at these ages was mind-boggling. Just her tone and her technique and natural emotion I find captivating. Of the two performances, I have trouble picking a favorite. They are both stellar and would you expect anything less? BUT, If I had to choose one, it would be 2018. The full orchestra adds a whole new layer and mood to the song. Plus Angelina is a year older and her voice is even deeper and richer than a year earlier. You're looking well and I hope life is treating you the same. I'm sure we will catch up soon. Peace and love.
For these two videos for me if I had to choose only one for future listening it'd be the first one because her voice comes across better in the recording, but that's only because of the poor recording quality of the second event (mobile phone from large distance), but for just listening to audio with perfect sound it's the album version for me with its perfect mix and studio recording quality where you could hear a pin drop, and that was done with the second band... It's a pity that we rarely get reactions to the album tracks because of the lack of visuals - as audios to listen to on my BOSE system and really get every nuance of her voice these are unmatched by any video...
Wonderful analysis my friend. I preferrred to first concert, but both are phenomal. I just watched your reaction to the Teskey Brothers "Take my heart" part 2 of 3 videos in this release. The "Oceans of emotions" video was 1/3 and the London Bridge release will be 3/3. I wish i could do a remix/blend of Josh Teskey doing Valerie with Angelina Jordans version. It would be epic. My takeaways are that in the first one, when she was 11, she sang from the perspective of a person who had the words, but not yet the mental fortitude to be TOTALLY through with it, whereas her performance at age 12 comes from the perspective of a person COMPLETELY and once and for all through with that jerk she is singing about. Stronger and more definite. But then, the arrangements also have a lot to do with that perception I guess. The mellow trombone as opposed to the heavy brass. Another observation is that you possibly have been repairing a car engine ? I see a lot of scratches on your right hand, but very few on your left, leading me to think that you've been manoeuvring a wrench or a screwdriver in a very tight space. Sincerely, Sherlock.
First performance she is eleven years old. This whole concert is outstanding, and if you haven’t watched all of it, you definitely should. Second performance she is a year older and you can hear the added maturity in her voice. The first one was with a Norwegian jazz band. The second one was accompanied by the KORK Norwegian Military Band. Someone pointed out recently that there were no strings so the clarinets had more prominence here. Again, this concert was excellent, and you should watch all of her performances. Notice her feet tapping under her long dress along with the band.😅
I love both versions and it’s great to have a conversation. The arrangement in the second one is a bit more conventional as in you hear it more often. You called it aptly a James Bond feeling, I was thinking of Michael Buble (great guy and performer). Either way a great arrangement. The first arrangement was more a small club jazz arrangement. I really enjoyed the trombone solo in the first one. When it comes to her singing I get a different emotion from it. The second one is a story where she is bit more angry and annoyed with the other person, the first one she gives me the feeling where she is a little more sad but also resigned it is the way it is. Anyway that is my take on it, thanks!

So lucky that these brilliant young performers are coming up at this time....and they are discovering the rich lode of what we know as oldies but goldies...and they are breathing new life into them. As a musician I absolutely love the arrangement in the second version and would love to be part of the orchestra, but as a music connoisseur i admire the interplay between Angelina and the band in the first version, which is more improvised compared to the very well rehearsed second version. I like the first one a little better because I can hear her a little better.I don't know why they make the instruments so loud,when all you want to hear is that incredible voice.I've gotten so she's the only singer that I listen to now.After you hear the best, the rest are a little boring. Actually it's the vibes for me... The 2017 were more intimate having the jazz band and some solo instrumentals. In 2018 she was with a big military orchestra and obviously they have to be loud. I do think Angelina is just adopting her voice on two occasions..
I prefer the band in anything AJ does and the orchestra is too loud or the mic is not set up properly. I know you know more about mics so i would welcome your feedback .

a young age is beyond mind boggling. I can listen to her singing songs like this
day and night, never tiring of her. She just has this way of soothing me like no other
artist has ever done to me, much less one so young.

Little miss Versatility strikes !!!
I love both of these but I love the 1st version with the small jazz band the most. The slow. sultry, smooth version is my cup of tea. She is in her element there & I feel like she is improvising on the fly while the band follows whatever she does. In the Military Band version, everyone was playing the sheet music perfectly as was Angelina. The band was too loud in the mix of this fan video, so instead, I'm comparing the 1st one with the audio from her album where the mix is perfect. But even with the perfect audio of the album, I still prefer the 1st concert version where she's singing it as she is feeling it, while the 2nd concert & the studio version for the album, she's singing it like she rehearsed it.
She sounds great in both versions. Orchestra in 2018 version is just a touch heavy and if it wasn't for that it would be my choice.

Ok, I gave my opinion a tiny, teeny, little bit early; I love the military band version, too! It is also fascinating to watch the musicians’s faces and demeanours, it is very clear they have tremendous respect for Angelina! Oh, and she told the first clarinettist “to go for it”! And, boy, did he! Interesting to compare the live concert to the recordings half a year earlier.

Hey Jesse, Nice to see you back doing an Angelina video. There are so many that they could keep you busy for a full year everyday! And each one is as good as the next. These magic years of Angelina from ages 8 to 12 produce some of the most impressive performances. Not that everything after wasn't impressive, but the skill level that she had attained at these ages was mind-boggling. Just her tone and her technique and natural emotion I find captivating. Of the two performances, I have trouble picking a favorite. They are both stellar and would you expect anything less? BUT, If I had to choose one, it would be 2018. The full orchestra adds a whole new layer and mood to the song. Plus Angelina is a year older and her voice is even deeper and richer than a year earlier.

For these two videos for me if I had to choose only one for future listening it'd be the first one because her voice comes across better in the recording, but that's only because of the poor recording quality of the second event (mobile phone from large distance), but for just listening to audio with perfect sound it's the album version for me with its perfect mix and studio recording quality where you could hear a pin drop, and that was done with the second band... It's a pity that we rarely get reactions to the album tracks because of the lack of visuals - as audios to listen to on my BOSE system and really get every nuance of her voice these are unmatched by any video...

Wonderful analysis my friend. I preferrred to first concert, but both are phenomal. I just watched your reaction to the Teskey Brothers "Take my heart" part 2 of 3 videos in this release. The "Oceans of emotions" video was 1/3 and the London Bridge release will be 3/3. I wish i could do a remix/blend of Josh Teskey doing Valerie with Angelina Jordans version. It would be epic. Great reaction! My takeaways are that in the first one, when she was 11, she sang from the perspective of a person who had the words, but not yet the mental fortitude to be TOTALLY through with it, whereas her performance at age 12 comes from the perspective of a person COMPLETELY and once and for all through with that jerk she is singing about. Stronger and more definite. But then, the arrangements also have a lot to do with that perception I guess. The mellow trombone as opposed to the heavy brass.
Another observation is that you possibly have been repairing a car engine ? I see a lot of scratches on your right hand, but very few on your left, leading me to think that you've been manoeuvring a wrench or a screwdriver in a very tight space. Sincerely, Sherlock.
First performance she is eleven years old. This whole concert is outstanding, and if you haven’t watched all of it, you definitely should. Second performance she is a year older and you can hear the added maturity in her voice. The first one was with a Norwegian jazz band. The second one was accompanied by the KORK Norwegian Military Band. Someone pointed out recently that there were no strings so the clarinets had more prominence here. Again, this concert was excellent, and you should watch all of her performances. Notice her feet tapping under her long dress along with the band.😅

I love both versions and it’s great to have a conversation. The arrangement in the second one is a bit more conventional as in you hear it more often. You called it aptly a James Bond feeling, I was thinking of Michael Buble (great guy and performer). Either way a great arrangement. The first arrangement was more a small club jazz arrangement. I really enjoyed the trombone solo in the first one.
When it comes to her singing I get a different emotion from it. The second one is a story where she is bit more angry and annoyed with the other person, the first one she gives me the feeling where she is a little more sad but also resigned it is the way it is.

Either or neither nor that's a fair comment. Good to hear your opinion. On another great prodigy performer...look up Emily Bear..Bumble bee boogie..it will also blow you away. So lucky that these brilliant young performers are coming up at this time....and they are discovering the rich lode of what we know as oldies but goldies...and they are breathing new life into them. Thanks again for presenting what i believe to be one of the greatest vocalists of her generation.

As a musician I absolutely love the arrangement in the second version and would love to be part of the orchestra, but as a music connoisseur i admire the interplay between Angelina and the band in the first version, which is more improvised compared to the very well rehearsed second version. The improvisational element in the first version and how the interplay develops becomes quite obvious when listening to the two concerts prior to the one used in this review,:

The cheating scumbag to whom the lyrics are directed is represented by the trombone in the first version and the part is presented with lots of sorrow and regret, whereas in the second version this part is played by the whole orchestra and holds a more argumentative and spiteful position.
It was so very noticeable at the time when Boris downloaded these 3 concerts, in the last one the trust between all the musicians (and Angelina) was solid.

I like the first one a little better because I can hear her a little better.I don't know why they make the instruments so loud,when all you want to hear is that incredible voice.I've gotten so she's the only singer that I listen to now.After you hear the best, the rest are a little boring. Sorry,I'm not proud of thinking that way but she does something to my soul everytime she opens her mouth.
Actually it's the vibes for me... The 2017 were more intimate having the jazz band and some solo instrumentals. In 2018 she was with a big military orchestra and obviously they have to be loud. I do think Angelina is just adopting her voice on two occasions..
