"Unique" : Mudvayne is standard Nu Metal dressed up as "technical" math core with funky fretless bass. Later they went "progressive" which is another word for "poseur." I like Dig (which is really just Slipknot + Cryptopsy) but let's be real about their true level. Even Dillinger Escape Plan and like 50 other wannabees did "math metal" equally as well as or better than Mudvayne.
I STILL remember the first time I heard dig, maybe 8-10 years ago. At a party a friend of mine was like “you wanna see the coolest video ever?” And I was like duh, I watched it, and to this day I ask my friends that haven’t seen it “wanna see the coolest music video ever?” The cycle of Dig is beautiful.

It's so beautiful because this was just before the budget fell out of the music industry due to massive piracy from file sharing programs like Napster. This era was the tippy top of production budgets for alt bands.
I remember seeing them open for Slipknot in late ‘99 or early 2000 not knowing who they were. Blew me away, fan ever since.

To this day Mudvayne is one of the best live shows I've ever seen. Chad opened the concert by stage diving into the crowd and moshing right beside me. It was the most epic fucking thing ever. One of the greatest moments of my life.
Same, on this tour too. At the start I was wearing a Metallica Crash Course In Brain Surgery t-shirt, at the end I had no shirt. Mudvayne vapourised my shirt.

LD 50 (album dig is on) was the most raucous creative thing I've ever heard, it felt more like a crazed jam session between 4 unbelievable musicians, such a raw almost improvisational vibe yet so fluid and memorable simultaneously .... more of an abstract conceptual feel... but wow, the super funky, groovy, heavy, bizzare, experimental, disturbing, yet real, transcendent damn near spiritual and cathartic feel with weaving altering time signatures and brilliant layered poly rhythms tickled and titillated the deepest artistic corners of the mind, the variations on a beat they would extract was mind boggling, I'd listen to this album for the bass player alone, crank the lows up, it sounds like the bass player has 4 hands churning out crazy crawling swooning grooves, crunchy percussive rhythmic guitar that compliment and accent it all, and a wizard of a drummer behind the kit, all headed by a monster of a front man with crazy range which spanned anywhere from furious and scary to melodic heartbreaking and hauntingly beautiful with a penchant for rhythmic delivery...
they sounded and looked like a scifi horror movie turned into a band from another dimension, it genuinely felt alien cuz it was so original or "unique", honestly I think they were some of the most talented unrestrained fearlessly creative musicians when all the stars aligned, the album is a trip, dont be fooled by the visual or by dig alone, it's probably the simplest track on the album, it was their way of busting open the door to their crazy world

@@jimihell9527 also no, the bass plays a bassline still, it's just very nonstandard but the guitar mostly plays solos, leads or doubles the bass. in the heckler, the bass plays melody in the beginning but i can't really think of another song where bass is the "lead". i mean, it is the driving force but it's still in the rhythm section yk.
It is great to see the band giving it another shot, with a reunion in 2021! I can't wait to hear some new tunes!

I’ll never forget the first time I heard this song. I was 15 in my high school wood shop class and one dude was talking with my teacher about Mudvayne. He played Dig through the computer speakers and cranked up the volume. There were just the two of them and me in the classroom at the time. It totally blew me away because up to that point I never heard anything that heavy and brutal before.
This is exactly what don't judge a book by its cover is, ironically (my profile picture explains it) I was avoiding mudvayne by their looks.
But holy hell mudvayne is amazing!

All the bass memes really speak to the strength of their musicality. That out of the way, the dig video is such a time capsule. I feel like the entirety of the esthetic of the whole nu metal movement can be summed up by this one word: insanity. That seems to be the common theme and vibe all the bands of that time were going for. I actually kinda miss how unapologetically 'scary' and aggressive it all was. That kinda piss and vinegar is sorta missing in a lot of today's heavy music to my ears.

Yeah man here are some of my favorites : -1 , Forget to remember , IMN , Noting to gein, Death blooms, Cradle, Severed, Determined, Same ol', Silenced, seed, and Dull boy . Just to name a few
Severed and Cradle are probably their best songs, in my opinion.

God I miss this band. Glad we got Hellyeah though, i'm hopeful for a reunion someday with these guys, though i know its unlikely given their history, but fingers crossed! BTW, Chad Gray has said that this song was about the music industry wanting to change them as early as their first album and them resisting it and doing things their way.

Mudvayne is probably the most underrated nu metal band of all time
Mudvayne is what people call 'math metal', because it's super complex, crazy time signatures and they always change it up and down through their songs. They had a bunch of other really great songs. The lead singer and guitarist started up a side project with drummer Vinnie Paul from Pantera called Hellyeah (which you should also check out, Moth, Demons in the Dirt, Human, I Don't Care Anymore, Blood for Blood), but there was a falling out between the two of them, which lead to the lead guitarist being fired from Hellyeah, and Mudvayne breaking up.

One thing I will say is they were amazing in concert. They were the first band where I actually was amazed by the bassist at a live show. Both when they wore facepaint and when they were more stripped down visually they put on great shows.

This song grew on me. Thanks MTV. I was sharing my room with my older brother. Once he moved out I was able to listen to this band. Oddly enough my brother ended up liking Mudvayne but still doesn't like "Dig" and he's the mad, angry bombastic one. He breaks doors, bursts walls, he's a maniac. I'm more quiet, brooding angry.
