  • Today I traded my Klein Tools MM400 multimeter for the MM300. Included in that package is the NCVT-1 non-contact voltage tester. The RT105 receptacle tester and the IR1 infrared thermometer.
    This is a great package for the price for someone getting started out in the trades or a DIY-er fixing things around the house.

    The little ir temp gun is helpful getting a rough idea if all cylinders are firing or not. Fire it at the exhaust manifold tubes and if one is colder or hotter it can narrow down which cylinder your having issues with. I've also used one to find a restriction on a mast, run the hydraulics long enough to warm it up then just follow the hoses to the cylinders and look for the hot spot. I think you and I fill similar roles at our dealerships, your little rant at the end about being excited when the call comes in that says we've thrown the kitchen sink at it and it still has the engine light, are my favorite. Love a challenge.

    DUDE!!! I am 100% with you on that Auto Ranging - it can be crap!! I can't count how many times I just grab my 50+ yo Simpson 270!! No auto-ranging on that baby. And its always right. A bit big and clunky, but some jobs it's just easier than the hard to see digital display. Esp when you know you are on a 48Volt device, and you just want to see that meter swing to near 50V!
    Cheers!!
    Edit: Also, I prefer the outlet tester with the GF check button, personally.

      Only problem I ever had with an analog Simpson was when somebody else kindly dropped it for me and I had to open it up,and re zero the movement. Fortunately the teacher in High School Radio Shop taught us how to do that without breaking it.
      Explaining to my wife why I wanted to borrow her nail polish remover was the hard part.

    Suggestion for wrapping the cables and relieving stress on the connectors... Rotate the plugs to the left and wrap the wires horizontally and the meter body helps eliminate stress on the plug wire boots.

    The cell/battery test ranges include a load (resistor) so you aren’t just measuring the open terminal voltage. The manual probably specifies the resistance of each range, So, not the same as the voltage ranges-and probably pretty useful for trades since cells and batteries are used in a lot of things tools, &c.

      I’m a maintenance tech for some low incoming government housing, 100 units, some built in the 60s and 70s. A lot of is original stuff and almost all of it is mislabeled at this point. I’ve been debating getting it but haven’t yet

    • @rrsttt7505
      @rrsttt7505 Місяць тому +1

      The ET-310 is good, but I really like my ET-450, it does basically the same thing, but works on non energized circuits, it works on stuff that’s underground also. Works great trying to find stuff that has broken wiring, or is on a timer.

    • @drescherjm
      @drescherjm Місяць тому +2

      @@rrsttt7505 I looked into that and for my usage it didn't warrant the higher price although I did consider the ET-450. The amusing thing is what triggered the purchase was my wife had a space heater and a small shopvac on at the same time in our outdoor 3 season room and a breaker tripped but it wasn't visible / obvious at all which one had tripped. The ET-310 wouldn't solve that type of problem but it would help me fix the mislabeling that has happened over the years of previous owners in the house.

    I like Klein's hand tools, and have no further experience with them. Extech (Teledyne FLIR) sells the EX410A which should be directly comparable- screen may be a bit larger, and support K-type thermocouples (it's even still orange). Brymen sells nicer meters (in red), but not in the US. Greenlee sells several rebadged Brymen's (in green). Likewise, EEVBlog sells a couple (in blue). My preference is still my precious yellow meter, but they are VERY proud of their work.

    I picked up the Klein ET600 Megger a few months ago for a deal and have the Klein Scout Pro 3 as well...I'd call them both fairly decent for the price. I have a lot of Fluke meters, a big boy 287, a 179, a 325 AC/DC clamp, a 323 clamp (that I got in a kit with the 179) that I need to sell, and a T5-600, and a few of their little beep sticks and a bunch of leads and a bag and such. The Fluke stuff definitely feels better built, less plasticy, controls are nicely weighted, they're super fast/accurate/stable, etc. but honestly the value for money of Klein can't be beat. A megger of the same capability as the Klein but from Fluke would have cost 4-5 times as much, it's just crazy.

    Working automotive...
    Get a DC clamp meter with peak hold too !
    Btw,
    I think those 1.5 & 9V battery test selections put a higher load on the circuit than the regular voltage scale does.
    On that receptacle tester,
    It won't display anything if line is hot but neutral and ground is open.
    That can lead a user to think a safe condition exists when its still dangerous.
    Btw,
    I don't work on a lot of receptacles anymore. But my experience, about 8% of all 120V receptacles I'd encounter are backwards polarity.

Still works after being dropped a thousand times from 6ft to 45 or so, I've welded the tips numerous times, dropped it in puddles worked with it in the rain. I do HVAC/R. I had a field piece when I first started because it was 99 bucks. It was ok. But after a couple months I realized I needed something better. The field piece lied to me a lot. It'd tell me I didn't have voltage when I was having to remove a part. Then I touch high voltage. Went straight to the supply house and bought a fluke. It was 300 and hasn't failed me once. I do love Klein tools. But when dealing with 120 on up to 460 I wanted something that was proven. I know Klein is mainly for electrician so I'm sure their meters are great too. The master tech teaching me used fluke and when I went to school to be a mechanic all the experienced techs said go with fluke for meters so I did.

    I’m a gen tech and meters are the most valuable tool for me. I use a fluke 87v everyday. If you’re an auto tech or a tech who mainly deals with dc voltages and resistance measurements, you don’t need a $700 meter. But if you do work on ac voltages regularly, use a high quality auto ranging, true RMS meter. They’re more accurate, safer, and you can trust the quality, especially if it’s Fluke. Anyone complaining about the auto ranging function doesn’t have much experience with a meter. You can select the range function on the meter to read ohms, kohms, megohms, all of that. On top of selecting what range of voltage you want to read. Auto range is fine a lot of the time and I understand the frustration having the reading bounce all over the place when in auto, just range it lol. DO NOT USE A CHEAPO METER ON AC. If you care about your life at all, do not fkin use some $15 analog harbor freight meter on anything ac. Watch videos of those cheap meters failing, nothings changed, they still blow up in 2024.

    • @Etronax
      @Etronax Місяць тому +1

      I used Amprobes and other non-Fluke meters for a long time. I just thought that of Fluke prices are inflated by their reputation and don't give bang for your buck. I got used to setting the meters on manual range mode since auto-ranging tends to be slower.
      My new employer gave me a very nice (and slightly overkill) Fluke 289. First time using it I immediately realized that Fluke takes auto-ranging readings way faster than most brands. There are still situations where I might consider manual ranging but it's not a neccecity as it used to be for me.
      Also that model has some sick features that I didn't even consider that I might need in a multimeter. Like the accurate low-resistance measurement mode or low-impedance voltage measurement (anti-ghost voltage).
