- People frequently panic when they have to take meeting minutes because they're afraid they will forget to record something important. Christy Crump, the director of operations for Regulatory Compliance Services who has 25+ years of experience as an administrative professional, provides her top 3 minute-taking tips to help you diminish this fear.
Yesterday, on my first day on the job, I had to sit in on a two and a half hour meeting and take notes on it. Never done anything like this before. I never saw the agenda. Right at the start, someone said they had a problem with item 3 on the agenda and they all had a big argument about it. You're a great help. Thank you so much.
I’m quite scared at the idea of taking meeting minutes, but this video was very reassuring. Thank you for making it! ✨
Having been a recording secretary for various organizations/city government since 1990 I have to say this is sound advice. Being a good listener should never be understated. I have never been afraid to ask questions if clarification is needed.
Top 3 tips for minute taking:
0:58 Keep it Simple. MOM is SUMMARY of ACTIONS taken in the meeting and DISCUSSIONS we had in a meeting. Avoid derogatory comments, personal opinions, excessive information about public speakers. Focus on WHO and WHY and WHAT. Record word-for-word only VERBATUM of MOTIONS and AMENDMENTS to the MOTION.
1:50 Always be prepared for your meeting. Take the agenda and break it item-by-item before the meeting begins to design your template, leaving room for the notes during the meeting.
2:38 Get your draft reviewed by the chair. Distribute the reviewed draft but keep the edited draft by the chair. Follow the idiosyncrasies.
Face head-on with your fear. Let yourself volunteer to take more MOMs. The more you do, better you get, less fear and more confidence! Be the master Minute Taker.
What does "MOM" stand for? (Summary of Actions would be "SOA," not "MOM," no?)

Fantastic- Love your approach to teaching administrative professionals on how to take minutes.
Thank you so much for this video. I have an interview for an Administrative Assistant position for which I am qualified for, except I have never, ever, taken meeting minutes. There is a 45-minute minute-taking test, and I am scared stiff. Addressing that panic and anxiety in your introduction was exactly what I needed. I've never heard of the 80/20 rule, but I love it and can apply that to so many areas. Very much appreciated. Thank you!

I attend a meeting that goes on for 6 hours, with 12 people interjecting and the subject matter goes off on a tangent all the way through. I need to try and rein them back in as it is so difficult to write up afterwards
The amount of productive work time lost due to endless mind numbing meetings is without measure.
100%

Ms. Crump could you show me example , I would like for you to become my mentor.
could you please write down the phrase at 3'06? it's not quite clear for me to hear it, thank you
Mai, the phrase at 3'06 is: The first is so that you can learn all of the little idiosyncrasies that the chair of the meeting has.
