Palpatine's SURPRISING Original Backstory (Pre-Empire Strikes Back) | Star Wars Lore

- George Lucas had a very different backstory created for Emperor Palpatine when he created Star Wars. In today's Star Wars Lore video, I'll detail that backstory, and examine the changes!
George Lucas created about a dozen different versions of Star Wars, before settling on the one that we finally got. There's treasure in those old drafts, including the original backstory of Star Wars' Emperor Palpatine. Even the A New Hope Novelization is extensively different than the movie itself. During the Death Star conference scene, we hear Grand Moff Tarkin announce that the Emperor has abolished the senate. The Emperor he's talking about, is far different than the one that we would end up seeing in the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. All of that and more on today's very special Sheev Palpatine dedicated Star Wars Lore video.

Yay! A video I (sort of) asked for! Thanks!
I choose to believe the Robot Chicken backstory, where he was just a real estate agent on Naboo
It is a pretty good backstory
That was pretty Wizard.
Robot chicken and lego star wars are the only real canon fans can agree on

Yeah, apparently so 😅 though I've never seen the Robot Chicken version
Palpatine's descent into the dark side was not just the result of his childhood, but from the sand getting EVERYWHERE.
Captain Cutter stop with this sand madness.
sir are you ok you seem to have a sand obsession?
Nice to see you still aren't that Anime weeb bullshit "Captain Fosou" or some shit and are now Captain Cutter instead
So we have Captain Cutter, an ODST and Darth Vader in one conversation... How will it end?
Sam BA It should have been a bar joke :p
thank for this im writing a pilot about the separatist and their reign and this helped me
I like the backstory given in the Darth Plagueis novel.
Borg vs The Flood or Daleks vs The Flood
Originally, in the 70's, Palpatine was some geek from Naboo who got his ass kicked by padawans; and he fell in love with Shmi Skywalker, but the padawans stole her too, so he turned to the Dark Side... but then Harry Potter did this plot first, so Lucas changed it. THE END!
Tom Evans lol. Funny meme
If Palpatine was not an evil sorcerer, it would be hard to believe that Vader would serve him.
Merlin served Arthur... or did he serve the dragon?...
@@seanhewitt603
Well, that's also cause Arthur was Nobility, just saying 😅 and had the fancy, prophetic power
Wait, how can palpating "dissolve" the senate if he IS the senate?
IceBear5426 The emperor is not all ruling. A lot of decisions are made in the senate. Palatine just removed this altogether and became a dictator that had a few close military Grand Moffs that did his bidding.
Stefan Holmqvist you'll pay the price for your lack of vision, he IS the Senate
meme123 if he was the senate why did he want to dissolve it then? :)
*enlightenment*
If you look at it that way then Vader was the one who dissolved the senate in ROJ
Thank goodness they made Palpatine the Senate rather then being controlled by The Senate
That'd be ironic
Now i know why most people hate on Lucas showing the truth in Star Wars.. they are part of the cult who want the Republic to fall and the Tyrant to rise.. And they are afraid of the warning signs! 🍷 🕶
In the 80s I was convinced that "the dark times" of the empire were a few centuries and the emperor was at least as old as Yoda. I also thought Obiwan was a few centuries old as well. But hey, I was half a decade old so what else would I think?
honestly in a lot of ways that makes sense.
No it was like that back then lol
You weren't alone
I like the version of Palpatine we ultimately got in Return of the Jedi and eventually the Prequel Trilogy, because it makes him a far more malevolent entity and an actual threat than just something like Hitler in Space while Darth Vader did all the dirty work for him.
Also, I'd love to see you make videos on the early versions of the Star Wars films. In fact, the very first script for the first film was actually made into a comic series called "The Star Wars", and it gives an insight on a version of the film that could have been.
Palpatine ended up being even more like Hitler in space than he originally was. A chancellor who establishes a dictatorship? It's just like Hitler.
I read "The Star Wars". It was cool.
Have you ever seen Lucus film "T.H.X 1138" ? Made before star wars episode 4. Old movie. I believe it is linked to star wars. Takes place on Earth. In the starwars universe wonder where all humans come from living in a galaxy of aliens. Originally humans came from earth. Well in Thx 1138 robots officially robots were using humans to mind control and build an army. The humans were taken from above . This army they built i believe was the creation of an army, " The Empire" just my thoughts on your note. All of star wars trilogy starts with films are thx surround sounds! And, 1138 is mentioned in star wars 4. 1138 is the princesses prison room. There is evidence earth is a part of the star wars universe.

Palpatine: "I am not a crook. I have worked hard for everything I have earned."
"Put down your crack pipes and your beer bongs"
"I'll sneak into their houses at night and wreck UP ThE PLaCe."
"Lavish gold robes"
Glad they didn't go with that idea, it's more something a Supreme Leader would wear, not really appropriate for an Emperor
Have you.. seen ANY Emperor of ALL history? Lavish golden robes is EXACTLY what an emperor would wear
Lord Dim 1 I was making a reference to the idea being reused for Snoke after the idea was dropped by Lucas ;)
I know, imagine an arrogant authoritarian surrounding himself with gold. Preposterous.
@347Jimmy I thought the exact same thing.
Yeah, I mean I bet if he did wear a gold robe he would immediately die after being hyped up
Ah, back when he was known as "Frank" Palpatine
The line in A New Hope's novelization about Palpatine becoming a puppet figurehead may still make sense, from a certain point of view. We know that the galaxy was not aware that Palpatine was a Sith Lord. It could have been by design that, for his own protection, he began to tweak the system so that it would appear to the public that the true power lie with the Council of Moffs. The reality, of course, is that the emperor retained absolute power all along.
Jar Jar Binks was supposed to be that "secret" emperor that was controlling palpatine
So true. I heard a rumor his original back story was too dark for kids so they had to scrap it.
Yes, Jar Jar was originally supposed to be Darth Plagueis, but he wound up being too polarizing of a character for this to work.
Palpatine: I am not a crook.
Vader: Sire, we have recovered the Death Star plans from the Star Gate Hotel.
Palpatine: ... dissolve the senate!

- What do bounty hunters get paid?
Credits, guns, legal and illegal goods, "other services" and "favors" ( if you catch my drift)
Medieval Guy , Boba Fett would always steal bounties from Bossk. He almost felt sorry for him. Almost.

If the prequels portrayed Palpatine as being manipulated by a shadow council, I believe this could have given him sympathy from the audience. Once they trusted him, he would then reveal himself to be the manipulator himself. This could've been as big as the "I am your father" reveal in my opinion.
Just throw in another Palpatine character who seems kinda shady just to throw the audience off.
Tom Barnes wouldn't have worked. Vader makes people visibly afraid with his mere presence regardless of rank and yet he bows down to a simple politician? Unless the theme of Vaders subservience to the Emperor was done away with and kept with as being merely someone useful to keep government in line. Of course then he couldn't be used as a real threat
Because the mere simple politician was a Sith Lord who was even more powerful and arcane in the darkside than Vader himself. Which was the whole point of the Emperor being somewhat more of a "Druid" in his appearance in ROTJ. It hearkens back to our own stories of evil sorcerers and magicians who knew of dark and mysterious powers in legends, ancient mythological and mythology of mankind!
Vader's subservience to the Emperor spells out exactly just how dangerous and powerful the Emperor is in his own right! Vader was always meant to represent the dangerous and powerful; Black Knight. But the Emperor? Is his boss nuff said really. Lethal as the "Black Knight" is in medieval mythology, even he answers to somebody else in the hierarchy of those old legends. Same can be said of the Sith Lords in the Star Wars canon as well! Darth Vader's a footsoldier not the overlord who rules, but seeks to one day rule himself perhaps!
gargoyles9999 I never said the Emperor shouldn't have been force sensitive. I was merely stating that if they portrayed Palpatine as a character who was trying to do the right thing, that could be trusted but is being manipulated by a false shadow council would have gained sympathy from the audience along with Anakin.
But who's the real villain there then? "A false shadow council" isn't a physical body or person but a group of unknowns??! This is probably why it was best to have Palpatine as the shadowy villain in the prequels who is the main villain, who is a; master manipulator of the events that unfolded in the prequels! A shadow council wouldn't have worked out in the long run i think, given how the OT already existed and spoke of Palpatine's somewhat in the SW novels.
The revelation of Palpatine being Sidious, and Sidious becoming the Emperor actually blew me away.
I get heavy Dune vibes from the early Star Wars concepts.
Palpatine’s backstory changed considerably compared to Snoke’s - considering that neither Abrams nor Johnson ever bothered to write one, much less film it.
It's hard to argue that now. Snoke always bothered me for the same reason the good guys being 'the Resistance' did, because it was a no-effort copy-paste, but I thought, maybe Snoke will be cool. Then nope. As it stands, he literally almost doesn't have a character whatsoever. It's more like he's a force of nature, or rather, a narrative device with no in-character bones beyond 'me big, me bad, me yell at kylo'.
I think we were all under the impression that the trilogy was basically mapped out (not entire scripts, but the general storylines). It's sad when there's a dozen Snoke theories on UA-cam that are far more engaging than what actually happened (ie nothing). From being a Palpatine clone, Plagueis reborn, or Mace Windu... My theory (jokingly) was that he was Jar Jar Binks... He did grant Palpatine executive powers to create an army...
The biggest problem with the new trilogy is that they kinda make one movie at a time. They didnt really plan the trilogy
Nah I think Abrams probably had something maped out but he made the stupid mistake of letting Johnson right episode 8
But we never get the backstory of characters in the movies.
As much as I love the existing Palpatine, I've always liked the idea of looking at the original 1977 film and pretending that nothing else exists, with Tarkin being the guy who's really in charge and the Emperor being a puppet, Luke's father and Darth Vader being different people, and the Empire collapsing after "a thousand thousand" star systems join the Rebellion when the Death Star is destroyed.
It was all fun and games until the theory about the rebels being space terrorists and the galactic empire being the good guys.
It just had to ruin it.
Yeah, Empire Strikes Back came out I was really hoping to hear the back story of Anakin Skywalker apart from being Darth Vader. That story would have worked for me very well too
I have a similar idea. and I think it makes Palpatine even more sinister. In A New Hope, the government is reminiscent of much of feudal japan: the head of state is technically the emperor, but everyone knows that the shogun is one who actually runs the country. In my mind Tarquin is the head of a military junta that does all the work, and the emperor is a political figurehead.
Palpatine's greatest obstacle in seizing power is not the rebels, but these military and industrial leaders. But, he can predict the future, and to an extent control the future. Palpatine, encouraged Tarquin to take risks, knowing that the rebels could destroy the station. And when the first death start is destroyed, so is the Grand Moff, the commercial interests that built the station bankrupt, the military officers humiliated. This creates a vacuum, where Palpatine appoints his own officers, especially Vader, to positions of prominance, and Vader, unlike the earlier Moffs get results--and they get the results not from scientific means, but through spiritual forces.
By Return of the Jedi, the empire has transformed almost to the point of a theocracy. Decisions used to be made by boring old men in stiff uniforms, now they are being made by cult like mystics in robes. The emperor now has his own death start, not just a station but a new palace, a new capital. And in the final battle he orders his admirals, the only people in the empire who could rival him, to just watch and prevent the rebels from escaping while he, personally, destroys them from his thrown.
and it would have worked too. But Luke did something he never could have predicted.

People who don't like Star Wars being political.
It was always political.
THE FIRST SCENE IN THE FIRST MOVIE is political.
Fletcher .K
I don't think that the problem was that there were political messages in The Last Jedi; the problem was that there were unnecessary heavy handed political messages that were poorly integrated into the story.
Highlandus there's no difference. Lucas was super clear about the Empire's roots in Nixonian America, and the latter two prequels are a couple of the most overt reactions to the Bush era to come out of mid-2000's movies (and especially blockbusters). In fact, aside from the class stuff on Canto Bight (which is great by the way) I'd venture to say VII AND VIII were the least political Star Wars movies in decades.
@AndRiseUp least political /=/ good movies
SethxGeekdom1namek01yardrat true, but I still think The Last Jedi is the best since Empire
I genuinely enjoy Phantom Menace more than the Last Jedi. I watched The Last Jedi once and never want to see it again where as I saw Phantom Menace in theaters and at least once every few years since release. Because it has one of the best original Star Wars scores (Duel of Fates) coupled with the best lightsaber duel of the series. Last Jedi had none, Luke shows up with a lightsaber as a hologram than dies of exhaustion....

Maybe talk about early versions of the Phantom Menace or the entire prequel trilogy as a whole.
the original story of Palpatine would have made an effective propaganda piece for the uninformed masses.
The "Jedi assassination attempt" worked too.
It was quite smart how Palps blamed the Jedi for the war as a whole. Having an ex-Jedi lead the separatists was a stroke of genius.
A legends video on the Jedi allowed to have families/mate/love (i.e. Ki Adi Mundi)
Ki-Adi Mundi is allowed to have a wife and children because of the incredibly low birth rate on his planet among his species.

Happy New Year Everyone!!!
Creamy sheev just wants to be a young girl
In a sense, I think that some of this did get retooled and repackaged to where, it wasn't necessarily retconned, but simply misinterpreted. In the original story, the Emperor is effectively a powerless puppet figure who is controlled by his constituents - kind of like how Sheev denounces Valorum in Phantom.
But more importantly, the canon - or some that I've read - implies that Palpetine actually did very little AS the Emperor, as he simply left it up to his advisors to rule in his stead, so that he could be free to explore the further mysteries of the Dark Side. He wanted the Death Star, to replace him as the ever-present looming authority that he held as the Emperor, so that the galaxy would behave, even without him watching it.
So in a sense, from someone on the outside, they could see that whenever they would want to speak to or appeal to the Emperor, only to be blocked by people who were beneath him, it might seem to those unknowing, that he was being controlled by these people, and was nothing more than a figure-head.
I want to know how big the Republic fleet (Clone Wars) was
Clash Gamer a few 1,000,000 started out and grew over time.
BGOTTI CATALDO I mean the Fleet like how many Venators and light cruisers did they have?
How many Star Fighters?
That is what I meant
Clash Gamer good one I don't think they ever say. But after Palpatine takes over the Galactic Senate he has full resources of those planets and there ships so idk if say a few 1000 ships and a few 1'000,000 storm strupers after his Empire fell what was left went into hiding eventually formed a new order under leader smoke.
BGOTTI CATALDO The Clone Army had about 6 million clones and if I would guess the numbers of their Venators I would guess maybe 1000 but the Empire on the other hand almost had unlimited resources they had about 25000 star destroyers and trillions of stormtroopers
BGOTTI CATALDO That is a good guess I am not sure of the size of the fleet of the first order but I am not sure that they had 1000 cause they have really powerful cruisers 3 first order Star Destroyers had almost as much fire power as the imperial executor class super star destroyer
I've always thought of Palpatine more like Hitler than Nixon, with a lot of really close comparisons.
Being elected as Chancellor before getting his famous title, the old Republic's flag, abusing diplomacy to take control, etc.
@NotJo Yeah but all of those things can be similarily applied to Hitler, except maybe false patriotism.

Empire building challenge
Guidelines
1. You are the head of this Empire.
2. Choose your capital.
3. Chose one Supreme Commander for your military.
4. You have five fleets in your Navy chose one character from legends or cannon as your Commander for each fleet and chose two Lieutenants for them.
5. Your Navy must consist of one ship for each class those classes being a Battleship, Frigate, Destroyer, Corvette, Carrier/Command ship, Troop Transport and a Gunship any ship from legends or cannon can be used your only limitation is you can’t pass the New Republic Era.
6. Your Star Fighter Core must be made up of a Regular Star Fighter, Interceptor, Multirole Star Fighter, Bomber, and a Recon fighter. Same rules as guideline number five.
7. Pick five special forces units any group goes.
8. Pick one special Capital ship for you and your Supreme Commander.
9. Pick one Force Sensitive group as your Secret Service.
10. NO SUPER WEAPONS
11. Ground Commanders and ground armies are optional.

I like the idea of 'The Emperor'/Palpatine being a bit like the Emperor of Germany, particularly Wihelm II (perhaps a bit like the Western Emperor of the 30 Years War also); starts out with all the trappings of power, but is gradually, or not so gradually, replaced as the centre of power by the vast imperial military. This is essentially what happened to the last German Emperor Wilhelm II during the Great War. He started the war as the key decision maker, but by the end the show was largely run by the Army, in particular Generals Hindenburg and Ludendorff, and he became a puppet. Similarly, Western Emperor Ferdinand was eclipsed by his commander Wallenstein, although in that case the Emperor eventually got the upper hand and it ended badly for his commander! One another note, you could say that maybe the Jedi were a bit like the Janissaries of the Ottoman Empire. They were the sultan's elite soldiers, the Turks took them as children as 'tribute' and brainwashed them to fight for their new master. Sounds a bit Jedi? However, by the 19th century they were a 'block to progress' and were involved in court intrigue and the Sultan had them all killed.
Back when I was a kid, I found the Emperor to be an awesome character. A tiny old man that had total control over Darth Vader! He didn't even have a lightsaber! Then I saw the third prequel movie and was disappointed to see that he was weaker than I thought.
I really like these types of videos- I like to write stories myself, so seeing other writers' revisions and retoolings of plot elements and characters is cool.
I remember reading the novel form of A New Hope, I always pictured the Emperor remaining behind the scenes. The military leaders thought they had taken control and the Emperor was mainly a figure head, when in reality the Emperor was a Sith Lord, far from helpless. He was the one actually controlling the controllers, and any failures or disasters he could blame on the leaders, preserving his good image to the commonfolk. Additionally, anyone trying to stop the Empire would not see him as the true source of power, so he is less of a target.
I like the idea of a corrupt politician having subtle hints that suggest he is force sensitive. Adds a lot more mystique.
An oh so humble request here:

I found the reflection of Nixon's style of governance intriguing but it's also easy to see, the reference identifying the change in governance style developed by Octavian Caesar when he became Emperor Augustus Caesar. Galactic Empire Vs. Combine Empire (Universal Union)
That could be hard, the problem is that we actually don't know how actually big the combine empire is, they also have conquered multiple worlds across many universes, and is implied that those do actually have different physics laws, and if you have seen the epistle 3 thing, they also have atleast a dyson sphere, but they do lack they ability to go to one part of the universe to the other... so they probably lack hyperspace, but if they manage to get a single ship with a hyperspace drive...
TheBlackSunKing
When I say combine, I mean from what we see in the half life series.
Well, for what we see in the half life series is like trying to put an outpost against an entire galaxy, the galactic empire would win in that situation... but if you put the entire universal union (with what we see and what we can only speculate) against the galactic empire, it could go either way...

It is interesting how the eventual backstory ended up as a synthesis of the different original ideas. Say what you will about the Prequels, at least they had respect for the old EU, and generally the history of the franchise.
Revans Sith Empire vs Galactic Empire
Galactic Empire would win. The Starforge is an unlimited resource for vehicles and weapons, but Revan's Empire simply does not have the manpower, not to mention the Death Stars.
Kyle Lambert im not so sure manpower would matter, i remember the starforge spitting out droids and we have seen droid armies man ships and vehicles. this coupled with revens tactical and strategic genius would mean the empire would be in for a hell of a fight.
@@spiffygonzales5160 i do agree vader would win that fight...assuming they can find the star forge, but im not so convinced on the empire having much of a tech edge given these ships are ancient rakatan and the modern galaxy still struggles to do what they did. I do however think you are underestimating how much material the forge put out. It was enough to challenge a militarized republic and jedi order before the degradation that palps used set it.

The Flood is gonna destroy 40K, their space travel when they get to keymind stage is basically gonna win it for them. The only faction that can't get rid of is Chaos, like over 90 percent of Necrons are still sleep. To get into the webway all they need is own Eldar who knows, and that Eldar can just be dead to and it would work.
And the Tyranids are to slow to anything.
The flood by themselves Would absolutly destroy The 40k universe.
No chance for The 40k Milkyway
Lord Anubis the flood by themselves would pose a serious threat to the 40K Galaxy especially when it's not United, given the fact that the 40K Galaxy is large and the main power house the Imperium of man has a very slow reaction time by the time they react it would be too late most likely the only race that could really put up a good fight is the necrons
Not only that but it's end game flood to. Which means Keyminds who has far greater psychic power than anybody in the 40k galaxy besides the Emperor, perhaps Logar, Magnus, some phoenix lords, Ahriman, Dante, some Farseers, Some random alpha psychics and Eldrad will be everywhere. I missed a few others but it would be like 25 super strong psychics with one great one aka the emperor vs 100,000 super strong psychics aka around how many key minds it would be.
And that's even if the 40k team is even united.
Hell, the Gravemind with its psychic abilities was able to talk Chief with zero problems across the entire Galaxy in Halo 3. and that Gravemind is nothing to a Keymind.
Caesar and Napoleon did nothing wrong
Zerg, from StarCraft, invasion of Reach, from Halo
Wasn't he revealed in empire strikes back?

While I absolutely like the one we got, I feel like the one controlled by outside forces is more interesting and has more application to the real world. That might just be my bias as a millenial though...
But to do that, you'd have to take away the fact he is a sith.
@@zain6008 I'm ok with him not being a sith. That is not the story we got but I don't think it would have been worse
Nixon wasn't a fascist nor did he have fascistic ideals like the Empire did...so where was Lucas getting that?
Nixon supported fascists in the Third World, ignored Congress, launched his authoritarian War on Drugs, and his bombing of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia is genocidal to a point it would make Hitler blush. Guy was definitely fascistic.
Quq Balam you may want to walk it back there dude. Nixon was not worse than Hitler. Nixon’s body count in terms of bombings in Vietnam isn’t even a fraction of Hitler’s body count. It’s just absurd to think otherwise. And I can assure you that the US was in no danger of becoming a fascist nation. The greatest expansion of federal power in US history occurred under FDR after he passed the New Deal (which was unconstitutional) and placed Japanese Americans in interment camps.
I’d argue that democrat presidents from FDR all the way until Reagan were responsible for expanding the government’s power. This period of time was called Post War Liberalism. FDR, Truman, JFK, LBJ, Eisenhower, Ford, Nixon, and Carter all expanded entitlements, bureaucracy, and the size of the federal government. LBJ declared a war on poverty, spent over 20 trillion to fight it and very few people were actually lifted out of poverty. It wasn’t until Reagan when America started to deregulate and begin an effort to remove government from people’s lives.
Hitler rome and England anyone who thinks its based off Hitler is a libtard

Buster Call what??
what truths? that he clean up the government from the wallstreet swamp? (fyi he apointed top wallstreet executives to leading possitions in the government), that he wouldn't cut medic aid? (fyi the republicans ar trying to pass a bill that does just that). that he would build a wall to protect from imigrants (wich it wont) and that mexico will pay for it? (fyi the wal is expected to cost between 16 - 20 bilions in american taxpayer dollars just to build, and another 1 bilion every year to service it meenwhile over 50% of illigal imigrants arrive leagaly by air with leagal visas and then overstays) but what truth do you mean? Also, I really hope your profile picture dosn't mean you sympathise with nazi germany.
"It's based on Napoleon"
Okay, the French revolution is special. It's not even one revolution, it's a bunch of revolutions and coups, with a few wars thrown in for good measure, within the span of years, and for only some of the time did it even hold the pretense of democracy.
Harrower Dreadnaught vs Venator Star Destroyer
Kenneth Kates The Venator has better technology
A surprise to be sure. But a welcome one.
Could the USMC raid the Jedi temple like the 501st did and win?
CC-2224 Commander Cody ye bc they have bullets not blasters, which lightsabers wouldnt deflect back to the marine, only vaporize it. And traditional guns have a higher rate of fire than the 501st rifles, meaning less reaction time for a Jedi to counter the bullets. This also means the Jedi would have to take the offensive to kill a marine.
Idk man, some blasters fire pretyy fast
Favourite video from you so far, excellent job, thank you for creating and sharing!
