My favorite part is that he didn’t win despite having the better PRs. hope it was just for shits and giggles vs him going through something mentally and emotionally
Years ago, I went to a park nearby to run and there was a meet going on there. It was near the end of the day, and all that was left was a boys' JV race. I let them start, waited about 10 minutes, then began running the course. I was just kind-of jogging and not doing anything hard--I think I was about 30 years old at the time. As luck would have it, some of those JV runners were really slow and I caught up to them, even being 10 minutes behind. I was wearing a walkman and no uniform and training flats, so people knew I was not in high school. Several people shouted at me, even though I was staying to the outside and not interfering with the race. But I felt really bad, so I dropped out and left the course at like the 2 mile mark of a 3 mile (non-repeating) course. I figured there was no way in hell I would catch up to the stragglers, but I still did. I think some of those at the back were walking/running alternately. I don't think I hurt anyone because there were still like 100+ runners in front of me, and it was a JV race. But I would never want to have that happen to me again. I should have just run somewhere else once I saw the meet going on. I can't fathom showing up and trying to win, looking like Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite, trying to get back to 1983.
I have a similar story. I was in Arizona at a park to run a compact dirt trail for a daily run. This high school meet was going on but it was very unofficial. It may have been some kind of dual meet time trial because the course was not marked off or closed. I waited until all the runners had started and gave them a 30 second head start before I tried to catch them. I had just bruised my ribs from a car accident so I couldn't take deep breaths, but it was so fun chasing them down haha.
C’mon guys, I've had people literally walking in the middle of the course with their kids while I was leading a race and yes it is distracting and annoying but it is not gonna destroy your race if you're actually prepped to race. These people weren't trying to disrupt a major race they were just running. It ain't that deep in my opinion. If you run cc then you know shit is never gonna be 100% clean, you might slip or get pushed in the back and hit something yada yada yada. Distractions are part of the game
@@andypham1636 hey andy, I wasn't talking about the texas dude, that guy’s a fuck. I was talking about random JV races that have no real meaning and that people are gonna interfere with those races. The texas dude thing is completely different, but that's not what was being discussed. Thanks!
This is like when your a parent and you wonder what you would score on the SAT / ACT when you see your kid preparing for it. I can’t imagine actually doing it though.
Let’s think critically about this though. This dude was able to basically hop into a STATE CHAMPIONSHIP meet (the literal biggest one of the year) undetected. This is a security risk that needs to be addressed with more flaggers on the course. No nothing severe happened; just some weirdo living out his dream of running the state meet for a second time, BUT something crazy COULD HAVE happened.. this is honestly embarrassing on the UIL’s part. Maybe this dude did them a favor and they’ll implement something to keep things like this or even more severe from happening in the future.
This reminds me a little bit about James Hogue, the guy who stole the identity of a high school kid when he was in his 20s and won the Stanford Invitational back in the 1980s before he was found out. A few years after that, he made up another identity and got a full ride scholarship to Princeton before being found out again. This guy has been in and out of jail his whole life for various crimes related to theft, and he's in his 60s now, possibly in jail again
I was in class watching the live results come in on a non UIL website. was weird because right as the final results were posted, the top 10 were excluded at first (so it said #11 won the race) probably entirely due to this guy suddenly being there that wasn't. While kevin wasn't affected, I'm good friends with the #2 and #3 runners, and recall jack holding up a 3 on the official UIL post because he thought he was actually beat out by this dude. made for a great story and public bashing on insta, but wow do i feel bad for my fellas.
From someone who was there, it was a really strange thing to watch unfold. It even tricked down to the other races that weekend including mine. Just strange
I think my cousin ran against his brother Andrew Herbert in the track and field state champion chip, it was the 1600m, and my cousin got 4:15 and he got 4:14, crazy to think, can someone confirm this please, also he probably raced brenden in other meets as well cc and track
To these high school runners the state championship is a huge event for them. For a college guy to jump in to get attention is an act of pure ego and selfishness. His only motivation that I can see is to get attention for himself. Some people are calling this a joke or a prank but as far as I can see this guy is a total jerk. I actually would like to see him punished for this. Getting a little tired of people like this crying out for attention.
Absolutely agree, and glad to see the voice of reason in here. If this behavior were to become widespread it would have to be addressed more seriously, so we either speak up and shame the guy, or laugh it up and let some other prankster think it's okay. Playing it down is not helping anything.
The Milesplit website is so annoying. I'm just trying to see if I can find me at the starting gun or during any pictures but it's behind a paywall. I can't even see my own scores collected under my runner profile without paying
Crashing races is pretty normal in cross country, my coach had me do it a couple times, but why would he do it at a state meet, with a fake bib too. If you did, you just wouldn’t wear a bib
He’s like those college guys and old men that hang around high schoolers to try to be accepted and go out with high school girls. Just absolute loser behavior all around
This story is not at all unique. The most famous imposter is John Hogue but there have been others including a college runner who ‘won’ the Colorado State meet in the 80’s. He ran the whole race but at the end did not go through the finishing shoot
@@nicklasdaniels769 after watching some footage, maybe that’s true. But if he didn’t wanna win, why finish 2nd? Why finish 3rd? Why finish at all? None of it really makes sense tbh

Reminds me of this dude who ran cross-country with my older. He was your average mediocre runner with his average and mediocre times, until one race where he posted a new pr and came in third! Turns out that this one race wonder didn’t turn into Barry Allen for a day. He started the race with everyone and about a quarter of the way through he hid in some bushes (it was a loop), and when the first place runner passed him he jumped out and started running. He was not a very subtle guy, so it’s no surprise that he was outed as a cheater very quickly because he ran out in direct view of several people sitting on camping chairs right alongside the path.
How was Sanchez's race "tainted"? He crossed the finish line first and legitimately won the title. Just because this clown sneaked into the race, for whatever reason, it didn't affect Sanchez's result. He merely managed to garner some of the attention afterwards. If I were Sanchez, I'd just laugh it off.
I agree. Had he held on to "beat" Sanchez, I could see the anger. Or maybe the third place guy who initially thought he was fourth should be mad. But Sanchez should be happy. He beat the cheater outright.
I think Sanchez's statement was appropriate. He dismissed Hebert's lie and condemned his actions. Anything more would probably just give the cheater more attention than he deserves.
It's an understatement to call this man a hero. But here I am, Good Job. It was always fun having people do this in high school and getting away with it, they're the best. Damn fine man.
"no one was effected by it in the end" so why are y'all so fuckin mad at this dude?? like a streaker at an NFL game but he at least had the decency to keep his clothes on.
I ran xc and am a serious runner now, but y’all take this stuff too seriously man. Manic episode? Really? It’s not that deep. What he did was stupid but dang
How is it deep? It's just speculation about what might have happened. It is not just "stupid"; it can alter the whole race, and anyone who takes racing seriously should not want random people jumping in.

Please don’t ever do this again. A big part of cross country is the mental aspect, and a random guy hopping in can completely mess you up.
Please don't try that again. if you're gonna race the course independenty, do not do it while others are racing
Thanks!
Holy shit. I found you again, organically. I knew it would happen, I didn't know when. Congrats on the rebuild, good of content as always.
4:12 love this guy's support for (presumably) his son
This is like when your a parent and you wonder what you would score on the SAT / ACT when you see your kid preparing for it. I can’t imagine actually doing it though.
Most people have nightmares about going back to high school. Apparently not this guy.
The third place guy held up 2 fingers then changed it to 3 🤣🤣
Let’s think critically about this though.
Don’t be a jackass bud. Now you want your pay for security to cover the entire race course. God…. Talk about a good way to destroy the sport.
that reporter using an annoyed mom voice, hahah
This reminds me a little bit about James Hogue, the guy who stole the identity of a high school kid when he was in his 20s and won the Stanford Invitational back in the 1980s before he was found out. A few years after that, he made up another identity and got a full ride scholarship to Princeton before being found out again. This guy has been in and out of jail his whole life for various crimes related to theft, and he's in his 60s now, possibly in jail again
Weird that a guy with a sub-4 mile on his resume would want to do this.
He wanted to relive another victory in his high school days... wait a second...
great work as always etienne
Imagine being a grown man and not being able to win against a bunch of kids. Clown behavior.
Calling this a Cheating Scandal is nearly as odd the act it self.
reminds me of that story of that guy who played hs football until his 30's.... lol.
maybe it was just a weird prank of some kind
Crazy story, guess I'm glad it's bringing attention to running but not exactly what I had in mind lol
Just because you do something stupid and inexcusable doesn't mean you are mentally unwell.
I’d question that sub 4 mile as well.
College kid living his glory HS days..and still lost to a high schooler lol..weak
He's not a "college kid" he's a freakin' grown-ass adult! He's 23!
The Milesplit website is so annoying. I'm just trying to see if I can find me at the starting gun or during any pictures but it's behind a paywall. I can't even see my own scores collected under my runner profile without paying
It’s funny how the reporter told him it’s not allowed like he’s going to get thrown in prison for it.
Apparently he was thick enough to not understand that it WASN'T allowed.
Imagine wanting to relive high school dreams as an adult man. What a little beta boy
the only controversial thing to ever happen in the world of high school running, everyone be milking this one 💀🤣
More people should do this. It's objectively funny.
Tell me you peaked in high school without telling me you peaked in high school 😂
Tbh this funny asf
To some extent at least… it’s hilarious…. To some extent.
the running speaks for itself
I've joined in track meets at the local high school but never a race lol
Crashing races is pretty normal in cross country, my coach had me do it a couple times, but why would he do it at a state meet, with a fake bib too. If you did, you just wouldn’t wear a bib
He’s like those college guys and old men that hang around high schoolers to try to be accepted and go out with high school girls. Just absolute loser behavior all around
In the early 1980s at Tustin high in s. Cali. An adult passed himself off as a student who ran cross country. He even had relationship with a minor .
This story is not at all unique. The most famous imposter is John Hogue but there have been others including a college runner who ‘won’ the Colorado State meet in the 80’s. He ran the whole race but at the end did not go through the finishing shoot
Today I learned there's actually a huge community of running fans out there
The interview is hilarious 🤣😆😂
Many many things I would love to see the aliens faces when someone tries to explain the idiotic shit we do. Like running.
I was there, he was the race after mine. Kevin Sanchez is that guy, even a sub-4 miler can’t touch him 😂
Feel like it’s pretty obvious that he let Kevin win
@@nicklasdaniels769 after watching some footage, maybe that’s true. But if he didn’t wanna win, why finish 2nd? Why finish 3rd? Why finish at all? None of it really makes sense tbh
@@patricktflowers11317 I feel like he did it because taking 1st place away from the real winner was something he didn’t want to do, since he said he knew Kevin from high school
@@patricktflowers11317 because 1) he didn't want to take away an opportunity from an actual high schooler who worked so hard to get there 2) he'd be disqualified if he did win
@@patricktflowers11317 the school of the jersey he wore wasn't even there so if he won, it'd be easy to pick him out as a cheat
Motive: dude was trying to get some high school tail. I'll knock some sense into this boy
That’s just funny 😂 I hope I see more of this in the future
Me too. It'd be awesome if some old person mixed in, too, like 40 or 50 year Olds. 😅
Apparently 1 more person among the hundreds is just too many.
I agree. Had he held on to "beat" Sanchez, I could see the anger. Or maybe the third place guy who initially thought he was fourth should be mad. But Sanchez should be happy. He beat the cheater outright.
If you’re a runner trying to medal and see a guy with fresh legs at the latter stages of a race, this won’t have any bearing on how you race?
LOL…
I don’t see what the harm is. He didn't pretend to have gotten second legitimately
Hebert is a sub 4 miler and ran the course short and lost lmaoooo
I think Sanchez's statement was appropriate. He dismissed Hebert's lie and condemned his actions. Anything more would probably just give the cheater more attention than he deserves.
I saw the thumbnail and knew I recognized the course.
He just wanted to go back to the good old days.
It's an understatement to call this man a hero. But here I am, Good Job. It was always fun having people do this in high school and getting away with it, they're the best. Damn fine man.
What a year or few months for cheating scandals
the Manhattan bandit is my hero
04:18 Bro got roasted on Strava.. 😭😭
When I was in college I used to go back and lift with the HS football team. That is where it ended, I would have never suited up for the game haha.
"no one was effected by it in the end"
so why are y'all so fuckin mad at this dude??
like a streaker at an NFL game but he at least had the decency to keep his clothes on.
This silence was embarrassing
Crazy he lost when he didn’t even run the full race lmao
Im 48 years old and about to enter a wrestling meet for people 4-8 years old. Get on my level. 💪🏾
I ran xc and am a serious runner now, but y’all take this stuff too seriously man. Manic episode? Really? It’s not that deep. What he did was stupid but dang
Hmm... Kevin could've put him up to it so he'd help pace him. That seems more likely than a manic episode lmao
@@crashnebula7 Kevin cheating seems more likely to you than this guy having a mental health issue?
How is it deep? It's just speculation about what might have happened. It is not just "stupid"; it can alter the whole race, and anyone who takes racing seriously should not want random people jumping in.
@@machineofadream exactly
guy who made the video is a 'voiceover artist' with a laptop who paid for milesplit premium. of course he's going to wildly speculate about why an idiot did something that is against rules and decency that most everyone knows. there's not much analysis of any further worth in his video.
Is that Goucher college in the background?
Yeah
I dont like how you assume he's mentally unwell for cheating. Im mentally sick, i dont cheat at sports or hobbies because im not an ass.
Was he pacing someone at the end perhaps? Maybe a rogue assistant coach? 😂😂😂
Its awesome that he started late, has more experience but still gets beat by a high school kid.
At age 23 I could barely even remember what high school I went too.
