Not as great as the 1961 New Trier Illinois Boys Swim Team. Consider the following for a 1961 Sports Illustrated article: New Trier not only has the best high school swimming team in America, it has the best high school swimming team in history. It is so good, in fact, that there are currently only three college teams in the entire country-the Olympic-seasoned squads from Indiana, Southern California and Michigan-capable of beating the high schoolers in a dual meet. Five New Trier seniors have posted times that would have placed them either first or second in last year's national collegiate championships. Newbury Park was incredible but they would not been anywhere near to winning NCAA D1 in cross country. At the biggest swim meet of the year of 1961, the AAU's; New Trier came in third; while competing against all the best college teams. Additionally, of the 9 events swum back then, New Trier swimmers set National high school records in 4 or 5 of them.
Pretty effing impressive! I'm proud to say I grew up in thousand oaks, I'm a contemporary of the Go-Go's. Hopefully these kids will go on to greater things!!
Truly incredible! Though I must congratulate the team from my home state of Iowa. Sioux City North is one of the best teams I've seen. Their lead runner ran a 15:08 which is 17 seconds short of the Iowa High school record
This course is 6 seconds slower than a track, now I bet the newbury kids could improve but an equivalent performance on a track would be 6 seconds faster than their times here
I'm amazed how fast endurance sports have gotten in the last couple of years. Back in high school for me, which was 20+ years ago, we were a solid team and our state times were in the mid 15's on I'd say tough XC style cores, hills, varying terrain, and usually brisk/cold weather. But to spectate, people would usually be able to get from mile split to mile split if they were in good shape. Now, with people running 4:26 miles, you better have your running game on point if you want to see more than one split! Great vid and great race.
And lex & leo are only Juniors🤯WTF how much faster can they get? If they all run an all out 5k on the track they can all easily qualify for the olympics (I'm talking about 2024 since qualifiers arent for a year or 2)
@@vivadrags i believe they could. I just can't believe they did this on grass as well. Think about Leo & Lex having 1 more XC season and 2 more track seasons at this time. They could break many HS records and each of them on any given day could go 1 or 2 in the record books
@@Chasery Yep, I believe they have a strong chance of breaking 3000m, 3200m, 2 mile, and/or the 5000m in 2022 or 2023 if they attempt to in fast conditions like this race!
Should have mentioned that one of the runners to run the same course as Dathan in HS was Grant fisher, who had an absolutely prolific high school career. Wild
Honestly Im so sad I didnt get to go run this year because of sickness I would have loved to race against The Newbury Park guys even if it was for only 100 meters
Wow. I ran against the powerhouse Lompoc team of the early 1970, and so I know what this means. Back then cross country was 2 mile, and then just changed over to 3 mile while i was in school. Great to see this. When a program has several good runners at the same time, they push each other to great things. Their biggest competition is against each other.
Young family is crazy… both that twins breaking the previous HS 5k record and Nico Young who is in college broke the U20 5k record. Records being broken by the family
I bet there are state champions all over the country who couldn't make this team. Must be great coaches, not just in training, but keeping them motivated and grounded.
I remember racing this course and it is definitely a pr course bc the 1st kilometer is a straight flat wide stretch. They probably went out sub 2:10 their first 800m
yeah, the john hunt opening chute is built to be fast and support these big races, super wide, slight down hill with plenty of space to get a position before it tapers off.
Insane two mile split for those boys coming in under 9:00 and not cracking on the third and final mile. The course seems rather flat but still: Very impressive.
It definitely could be. Check out this HS basketball team though [ua-cam.com/video/DdDsZqege98/v-deo.html]. It had something like 3 or 4 future NBA players. I don't know anything about basketball or how teams compare, but I bet they would contend for best team in any sport.
Agreed, and I’m surprised nobody else is talking about this. NP just developed the 3 fastest hs xc runners of all time in a single year. Not to mention they have now won 3 consecutive national titles and will almost certainly grab a 4th next year. Haven’t seen any examples yet of a hs team this dominant over a single season.
New Trier High School in Illinois,1961 Boys Swim Team have them beat. They set 4 or 5 national high school records of the 9 events swum back then. After crushing at States, they entered, what was back then the biggest swim meet of the year; the AAU's. This high school team came in third, beating all the college teams except for three, (Michigan, USC, and Indiana). I don't think that Newbury Park would have come in fourth at the NCAA's this year.
@@anthonyjulianelle6695 impressive. Five athletes on that team were amazing, for sure. Two things to consider: 1. AAU is age group based, meaning HS athletes that are U18 (no older than 18) can compete as well as collegiate athletes. 2. There was an NCAA championship in 1961. I consider these two teams "co-champions" for greatest HS team.
Tough to compare. These guys definitely take the XC all-time crown. In other sports: The Delasalle (CA) Football team won 151 games straight in the 1990's and 2000's. Different kind of domination and different sport, but definitely in the short list of greatest HS teams in any sport. Chino Hills (CA) basketball 2015-16 season (Ball Brothers) should probably be on there too.
Coach: "Hector Martinez & Dev Doshi an extra mile run for both of you. DON'T give me that SIIIIGH! UP! UP! Get going! " 😂 Well done to that entire team. Young guns and still growing. Amazing.
This is another thing I saw I the results. This is something that another high school team will not achieve I believe for a very long time. Having all of there top 7 go under 15:00 in the same race in a 5k. That is just on another level.
Ran it today. Some people have been saying its short, but I don't think it is. My watch got it at 3.12 both times i ran it, for my run the day before and during the race. I think it has something to do with the dirt that its on. It almost feels like a track with the amount of energy you get back. It's also crazy flat, but I think that is obvious tho.
@Thomas Schmiedicke I agree, I don’t think there was anything crazy special about the course length/topography, I think there was just absolutely insane competition
@@alexb5312 competition definitely played a huge part in it for sure. the environment was also crazy. the pace/video car was hyping up the crowd the whole time and the course was lined 1-5 people deep for the middle area of the course.
@@thomasschmiedicke2361 I think the hill in Mile 3 can make or break some but if you run it well, you have the nice downhill to the finish. The rollers, wide course and turns certainly contributes the the speed. Plus the weather was perfect. Recently hosted the NCAA Division I South Regional. 8K for the Men, 5K for the Women. Garmin/Running Lane raised the bar and having thousands of family/fans/runners moving around made it an incredible event.
Perhaps the most impressive thing about this is to compare Newbury’s runners times from last track season. They had 7 runners under 15 mins for the 5k. Which makes this team 7 of the top 9 runners in their school’s very impressive history. Their 7th guy (Dev Doshi) ran 14:59 which is 4:47 per 1600 which matches his 3200 track PR. Leo ran 8:55 for the 3200 last track season, which translates to an 8:58 two mile. This means Leo also matched his track 3200 PR as his cross country first two mile split from this 5k. Lex and Colin weren’t that far off their 3200 track PRs either with that split (they both have 8:43 3200 PRs which translate to 8:46 for two miles). Hector Martinez was also very close to matching his impressive 9:23 3200 time from last year with his 14:52 (this pace over 3200 meters is 9:30). Aaron Sahlman (who ran a phenomenal 14:14) doesn’t have a 3200 PR listed.
Add Aaron Cantu to the mix. He is just coming back from injury and ran 15:29 in the Silver Race. He was one of their top 7 at the beginning of the year but has been injured all season and just starting racing again.
Extraordinary is the only way to describe this. That race was incredible. However, Id love to see the Newberry park team run the State Championship course in Brooklyn Michigan. That's where the former record was set by Ritz'. Hough, the fifth place finisher at this event ran a time of 14:10 and at the Michigan State championship race(Brooklyn, Mi) he ran around 14:49(I think) a year earlier and became the 2nd fastest time on that course ever.( Hough ran that race slower this year because he was all alone, the previous year he was pushed the whole way) I'll bet the entire Newberry Park team would be over 14:25 maybe 14:30 on that course. That gives some perspective to how incredible Ritz's record was.
I remember running cross country back in high school... pushing yourself like crazy and then sprinting at the end, running so fast your legs felt like they weren’t even there and your torso was floating... but I think my best times weren’t ever better than high 15’s for the 5k... granted, I’m not really built for running, and I did the best I could, but these times are INSANE for a 5k. These are some very gifted young individuals.
Excellent achievement!! The only thing that I’ve noticed with all of Newberry Park success in cross country is that they don’t run races that have hills of any significance cross Country is supposed to be different than Track! Long Hills, steep hills, steep down hills, gullies and, uneven terrain!! That course in Alabama was a 1 mile course run three times on flat terrain! I would also say that 90% of their training and races are in 70 degree weather and dry surfaces!! There’s a couple of courses in the state of Maryland that I doubt they would’ve broken 16 minutes!! Does that course have five significant hills end muddy passes through the woods, the temperature for the championship race What is been in the 40s or 50s!! These boys are fast and have a great coach! And therefore by 1 mile relay in Track what is very impressive!
If anyone is interested in comparing Newbury Park Cross country to great high school teams in other sports. Here is a segment from an article in Sports Illustrated on the 1961 New Trier High School Boys swim team. New Trier not only has the best high school swimming team in America, it has the best high school swimming team in history. It is so good, in fact, that there are currently only three college teams in the entire country-the Olympic-seasoned squads from Indiana, Southern California and Michigan-capable of beating the high schoolers in a dual meet. Swimming - female swimming - is a little different because female swimmers peak much earlier in age. You can have world class swimmers age 16 in swimming. Not sure about the men.
Cudo's to the team...outstanding effort and the time's? Wow! I will say this though...in all my time running CC in HS (in MI no less), I never, ever ran on a course as flat as that. Always the dreaded hills!!!
my prediction: he can hit one of these, just depending on which he focuses on: 8:25 3200, 3:59 mile, and 13:35 for the 5k. The Youngs will be right behind him, maybe even pass him by then, and I think Aaron will be a little off.
@@logankeaton3811 current record is 8:26, I think if he focuses on it he can do it. He's improved vastly since outdoor, he will most likely only continue to do so
-I could accept these results if this high school team was training at altitude every day. But there is something that doesn’t sit well with me. There is nothing new under the sun- I take that back. I just learned The whole Newbury Park team is good! All 7 of them. There is no way that many children could keep something like that a secret. My hat is off to these young men.
Lex, leo, and Aaron are coming back next year too .. they're definitely going sub 14:00! Also Zane is a beast! Representing for CO gang 💪 and insane performance by the top 15!! Anddd 71 people sub 15:00... I bet that's the most ever in a race to go that fast
The last couple races it’s looked like Leo was going to outkick Colin but then he just gives out, I wonder why that is? Does Colin just have more endurance to hold that sprint finish than Leo? Or maybe Leo is trying to break his spirit but it didn’t work?🤷…or he wants to Colin to win cuz he’s a senior😂
This was epic and all, but can I get at least one more shot of the guy in the Gator trying to pump up the crowd? On the serious side though, that young man that won had a look in his eyes that said, "I left everything out there."

Pretty effing impressive! I'm proud to say I grew up in thousand oaks, I'm a contemporary of the Go-Go's. Hopefully these kids will go on to greater things!!
You got the beat!
imagine getting a 14:44 and coming in nearly 50th place
I just watched this and it was absolutely insane!!
These young men give me hope for the future, great running gentlemen!
Truly incredible! Though I must congratulate the team from my home state of Iowa. Sioux City North is one of the best teams I've seen. Their lead runner ran a 15:08 which is 17 seconds short of the Iowa High school record
I hope NP enters some 5,000s on track......they got multiple kids capable of sub 13:40. Maybe sub 13:30. Dayum.
This course is 6 seconds slower than a track, now I bet the newbury kids could improve but an equivalent performance on a track would be 6 seconds faster than their times here
I was loosing my mind when Nico young broke the Woodbridge classic record.
This is making me lose my sense of reality
My boy Dev Doshi is the 🐐
I'm amazed how fast endurance sports have gotten in the last couple of years.
I remember Thousand Oaks and Mission Bay high school had a great teams 1990s
And lex & leo are only Juniors🤯WTF how much faster can they get? If they all run an all out 5k on the track they can all easily qualify for the olympics (I'm talking about 2024 since qualifiers arent for a year or 2)
I wonder if they could get Galen Rupp’s 5000m high school record of 13:37.
The greatest HS XC race i've seen yet
Should have mentioned that one of the runners to run the same course as Dathan in HS was Grant fisher, who had an absolutely prolific high school career. Wild
at this point I'm not even mad we lost to them at 2019 NXN, jfc these guys are slaying

I see these guys out running on the trails I run on, they practice at the speed most cars drive in the neighborhood
Honestly Im so sad I didnt get to go run this year because of sickness I would have loved to race against The Newbury Park guys even if it was for only 100 meters
What kind of sickness
@@aaronhassay5663 At first we were thinking Mono but we believe its a respritory infection
I count myself lucky I got to see it in person. Those guys looked like they were doing the final kick of a 400 the entire race. Boggles the mind!
Absolutely amazing running from all of the team
Young family is crazy… both that twins breaking the previous HS 5k record and Nico Young who is in college broke the U20 5k record. Records being broken by the family
Insane we might never see this type of talent on a whole team again
I bet there are state champions all over the country who couldn't make this team. Must be great coaches, not just in training, but keeping them motivated and grounded.
As someone who was present at this meet, it was insane
This whole race was just complete insanity! Like 71 high school runners under 15?!! Are you kidding me!!!!
Newbury Park is in my league and it was insane watching them run in league finals
I was there and I had trouble running across the course to watch them. Their last mile was 4:20 😐
Insane two mile split for those boys coming in under 9:00 and not cracking on the third and final mile. The course seems rather flat but still: Very impressive.
This has to be the most dominant High School team, ever, in any sport. Thoughts?
I think they had two more runners under 15min as well. Amazing team
I am so curious about their training regimen. I would love to see a video on these incredible athletes. Congratulations boys!
Coach: "Hector Martinez & Dev Doshi an extra mile run for both of you. DON'T give me that SIIIIGH! UP! UP! Get going! " 😂
Well done to that entire team. Young guns and still growing. Amazing.
imagine running faster than the previous world record, and coming in 4th. Insane.
This is another thing I saw I the results. This is something that another high school team will not achieve I believe for a very long time. Having all of there top 7 go under 15:00 in the same race in a 5k. That is just on another level.
That is also an amazingly fast course with 65 runners under 15 mins. How is that even possible. That is almost as crazy as the record!!!!!
We love our new facility here is Huntsville and have been fortunate enough to have numerous other races, high school and college.
Amazing guys. Congratulations!
Was waiting for this
Excellent achievement!!
Five New Trier seniors have posted times that would have placed them either first or second in last year's national collegiate championships.
Swimming - female swimming - is a little different because female swimmers peak much earlier in age. You can have world class swimmers age 16 in swimming. Not sure about the men.
Bro I was in the race and it was HEATED never seen something like this before
It would have been interesting to hear how they approached this, how they trained, etc.
Never stop breaking records ..keep it up
Newberry
Cudo's to the team...outstanding effort and the time's? Wow! I will say this though...in all my time running CC in HS (in MI no less), I never, ever ran on a course as flat as that. Always the dreaded hills!!!
Great job guys!! Way to represent NPHS!!!! GO PANTHERS!!!
Imagine running 14:44 and being 5th man and running 14:59 and being last man on varsity 😭
I honestly think this track season Colin can break 8:40 in the 2 mile, 4:00 in the mile and 14:00 in the 5k
my prediction: he can hit one of these, just depending on which he focuses on: 8:25 3200, 3:59 mile, and 13:35 for the 5k. The Youngs will be right behind him, maybe even pass him by then, and I think Aaron will be a little off.
@@FranklynAlvarez 8:25?

Colin ended the season with 1:48, 3:56 & 8:33 (3200). Great season!
Newbury park sets the bar higher rn. We are indeed in a new era of racing.
iv watched this a couple of times, outstanding !
NPHS class of 85' here. Great job guys, GoPanthers!!
Comparing this to Ritzenhein's run is pointless. Only same course comparisons mean anything in XC and sometimes not even then
Superb performances, what else can u say
I was there for this, it was crazy.
14:03 is absolutely insane, but that made me realize that someone will eventually step up and tackle a sub 14 high school 5k
Insane 16 mins is awesome almost breaking 14 min is legendary
I feel for Riley Hough, finishing just outside Ritz's time. Ugh, brilliant race... and now 2nd fastest in Michigan history.
Amazing stuff! Amazing athletes!
50 years to go from 15:45 to 15:00.97 national average, took Newbury Park just 1 year to take another 45 seconds off......
I ran in the bronze race. Needless to say, it was insane watching them run
Leo, Lex, and Aaron are only juniors. Will we be doing this all over again next year? YES!
AMAZING. Downhill last mile, but regardless insane.
What are they feeding these kids? Unbelievable!
I wonder what their times would’ve been if they were run in the Nike national championship at Balboa in San Diego
He’s gonna have to keep making a this will never happen again videos
