  • Taking a quick spin POV drive in a 2023 ND2 Mazda Miata Club with the Recaros seats, Brembos, BBS Wheels, limited slip differential, Bose sound system, all in Machine Gray Metallic. The chassis, engine, and six speed manual all combine to make this one of the most iconic cars to drive. The Miata actually has usable power. You can rev the four cylinder 2.0 liter engine to its 7000 rpm redline, and have fun at any speed on any road.
    The Miata is simply remarkable and once you drive it, you get it. Considering the overpriced, overweight sports cars and EVs currently on sale, the Miata is a legendary icon. While hot hatches are sometimes considered the competition, one that really stacks up for tiny car fun is the Mini Hardtop and Mini Convertible. May be as much fun to drive, but a different experience with its front wheel drive and turbo charged engine.

    Very important thing to note for future buyers. I currently own a 2021 RF so about 3 years of driving it now. It's an amazing car, I love driving this more than my model 3 performance, more than the c63 I had, more than the rs3 I had. However, keep in mind that if you decide to buy this car, you should buy it because you like the way it drives in its current, stock form. Aside from aesthetic mods and exhaust, any other performance mods are not going to come easily. I have seen way too many people buying the ND1/ND2 with the intention of power modding it, and that is not very easily achievable. The reason being that Mazda's "gram strategy", pretty much just using the lightest possible parts in this car to keep the weight down, prevents you from adding more power to the car without replacing quite a few things. The most popular and safest thing to do is getting an Edelbrock supercharger, which gives you an extra 20-30hp or so. Very noticeable in the car, but not anything crazy. The supercharger itself will cost $5-$6k and installation for it is another $5k or so; that's $10k. Anything above 200hp in the ND1/ND2 means that you risk blowing up your transmission if you actually use that power often. This is the biggest problem in this generation, the transmission. They did improve it for the ND2 model year 2019 and up, but people's transmissions are still blowing up. It's all over social media pages, it's all over the forums, just less often than the ND1. So yeah, any noticeable power mods mean swapping our your transmission for probably an NC transmission. This is another $1k-$3k all in, unless you can do the swap yourself. You'll want stickier, wider tires for more grip with the added power. Another $1k - $2k. Now that you have more grip, you need to upgrade/replace the stock suspensions so that it can handle the extra force from the added grip, another $600 or so. Then there are other smaller things such as fuel injectors etc. All in, you're $15k - $20k worth of mods now, all for 20-30hp. Noticeable and fun, but now it's a $55k-$60k car. Aside from the supercharger, there is a turbo option, which costs a bit more and will add significantly more power. I've seen 260whp - 300whp. I've also seen a lot of issues with this approach, since...more power than the car was designed to handle. LS swap is also another option. If you want to power mod the car, save your money, buy a used ND1, heck even buy a salvaged ND1 because you're going to end up swapping everything under the hood and underneath the car anyhow.

      @BN - good assessment. I’ve read that the tranny issues were only in 2022 and Mazda identified the problem and eliminated it, and the 2023s are fine. Something about carbon coating the gears etc.

    • @BN99239

      @@jaybd9329 The only year I haven't seen transmission issue for is 2020-2021. It's not as often as before 2019, but it's there for other years. I don't know about 2024 though. That being said, the model years that don't have transmission issue just means that they are okay stock. The transmission still cannot handle that amount of torque once above 200lb-ft or so, which is about 50 more over stock.

    The only other car I've ever driven, sitting so far away from the front wheels was a '64 Jaguar XKE, back in 1964. I always loved the British sportscars, those cars created many, many fond memories. Now the XKE had a longer wheelbase, which gave a smoother ride, but all in all, the MX-5's handling does bring back that old MGB feeling to mind. Physiologically, it all depends on the type of road you're driving on. Since 2015, I've thanked GOD for Mazda and what they've accomplished with the MX-5. I can tell they had the Iconic British Sportscars in mind when the MX-5 was created.

    As for the clutch, it's called a progressive clutch because of the different positions from 1st gear to 2nd, then from 2nd to 3rd gear, the clutch is more towards the top of the travel, sort'a like a drag racing clutch setting.

    My list of sports cars starting in 1970 are: a Mach1 (Cleveland engine), a Corvette, a Supra Turbo, a 300ZX Turbo, my first Miata a 2001 SE BRG, an ‘02, ‘03, ‘05 and an ‘06 Honda S2000, an ‘08 Miata GT PRHT, a ‘16, ‘18 and ‘21 Miata GT soft tops and my current ‘21 RF Club BBR. All the NDs have been great but my RF Club is my favorite of ALL the sports cars I have owned. I have thought about looking at the new GR 86, Supra and Nissan Z but for the first time in my life have talked myself out of even looking at them as the RF Club is so much fun! Probably my last sports car unless Mazda does something in the future to lure me towards their next gen Miata. No electrification PLEASE!

      I think Mazda said they planned to electrify their entire fleet by 2030. So yeah, that would unfortunately include the NE. The Miata has been the soul of Mazda for decades though, and they still get to call the shots with the next gen unlike when Ford called the shots with the NC. Lots of passionate designers at Mazda and I have faith that they'll find a way to keep it as fun and nimble as possible since that's what they went back to focusing on with the ND. Plus, it could be a good way for them to find more low end torque and overall horsepower, which are two things the current Miata's drivetrain could use a tad more of. So yeah, gonna lose a bit of that pure NA magic, but I don't think it's all doom and gloom

    Nice review, definately a car any car fan should drive at least once. But beware, I took one out for a test drive from a dealer and .... well ... no brainer it was an absolute hoot, direct response and on rails handling with beautiful response to driving the right lines in the twisties. Bottom line is that I bought it. Then an NA, then a very very rare NB SP which has about 230 HP and was the test on market for the mazdaspeed SE turbo. So buy one.... buy the set :) be warned ... they are a very addictive little car.

But I turn off highway and tolls on my waze, and take the long roads to and from work. Because I enjoy driving the car on the back roads and city driving.
      It will be interesting when Mazda comes out with the new models, ie...hybrid or full ev, how these cars will perform. In fact my decioson to buy this 2023, was because I don't want anything electric. Wanted that raw feel.

    There is a solution to all this wind buffeting all these non-roadster driving jockeys keep talking about. They were called "Vent Windows". You could unlatch them and swing them open; they were a smoker's ashtray on the road. The MX-5's have a very small, but fixed window where the old vent windows used to be. In fact, if Mazda were to re-introduce swingout vent windows it would, not only reduce wind buffeting, but offer more "A Pillar" support at the same time, along with allowing for smaller roll-up windows. I know why this will never be! They are afraid vent windows will cause more people to take up smoking again while driving. I can't remember the last car I had with vent windows. It might have been the 1979 Chevy Chevette I had? That was rear wheel drive, 4 cylinder with a manual 4 speed transmission and a hatchback. I think I put about 130K miles on that one, and 3 timing belts. Anyway, give it some thought.

    I have a 2019 MX5 w/a soft top, and dual speed auto/manual flippers in the manual mode. Guess what, the auto trannie is better geared for FAST acceleration, and the paddle shifters work well in low speed zones. Forget about that Olde fashioned manual gearshift, it's dated and too prone for poor gear shifts! Manual shifting is sooo dated, my system works well on the Watkins Glen F1 track w/ NO problems, period. PS. Most manual geared cars are driven by young men who have NO IDEA of how to drive a professional F1 course. Are the professionals driving a F1 course manually? No, speed racing is way more sophisticated these days. Lose the stupid Olde manual gear shift, the real pros don't use, so why should we?......

    • @BeyondTheTestDrive
      @BeyondTheTestDrive  2 місяці тому +1

      Nobody would disagree that dual clutches and your regular auto can get around a track faster. While tracking is fun, some folks just want to have fun on a country road at regular speeds. Miata’s would go bye bye if it wasn’t for the manual, but a good dual clutch would be interesting. Thanks for watching.
