I do love a pancake lens. I often take my Olympus 17mm 2.8 out as a walk around lens. I have the silver one and I put it on my old, silver Olympus EPL-1, which is pocketable. However, my favourite is actually my Pentax 40mm XS 2.8. It is tiny, at 1½cm thick and it has full autofocus (including a manual focus ring). It goes from f2.8 to f22 and it's very sharp.
This lens + sony nex c3 = budget king of street photography (just around 150$) Edit : Guys, ive just read official post from viltrox and NEX cameras arent compatible with this lens
I'm probably biased because I own it, but I'd recommend the NEX-6. It's still compact, it's got an electronic viewfinder, and it's also the only NEX model to have phase detection AF. It's closer in spirit to the later alpha 6000 that replaced it than any other NEX that came before it.
We got mirrorless APS-C + Full-frame. Supposed to be smaller bodies(sometimes) but all of the new lenses seems to got obesity. Even Panasonic who had some very nice m43 pancake lenses didn't make any newer ones.
Viltrox is currently killing it with the release of really excellent glass for several platforms, just look at the mega fast 27 1.2 for Fujifilm and the rave reviews, ok not a pancake lens, however it is 1.2. Really hope that this lens is released for apsc bodies and good luck with your personal life.
i have the 27mm f1.2 for my sony a6700. This lens is a best, super sharp wide open, beautiful character and focal length. Viltrox has done an excellent job.
@@robertcudlipp3426 of course the camera is unbalanced, the lens weight more than the camera itself ahah. you often have to use 2 hands when shooting, one on the grip and the other under the lens, or in my case (I do mainly videos) a top handle and a rig with the v lock battery behind to counterbalance the weight of the lens. More weight means also more stable footage so i don't really mind the weight but I understand that for people is a dealbreaker.
For $99, just get this full frame version. It'll work absolutely fine and will cut out some of the vignetting at the corners. Or do you need it to be a 28mm equivalent after the crop?

And since it's based on the 40mm f2.8 limited lens (just redesigned by famous designer Marc Newson) which also got it's optical formula from the old MF Pentax-M 40mm f2.8 it's actually.. a FF lens!!!! So, full frame - f2.8 - adjustable aperture - autofocus - capable of manual focusing - excellent IQ and perhaps even smaller that the lens on this video. Downsides? Screwdrive AF (so AF uses the focus mechanism of the Pentax cameras which makes it a tad noisy and sometimes maybe slow). And the fact that it's a Pentax lens ...with zero hype around it by UA-camrs ...so a lens destined to remain under the radar of most people out there
Fantastic job on the video! Sounds like the lens will focus faster on newer Sony cameras, so that's good to know. I was only able to try it on an a6000 and a7S. It was fine but not the fastest in AF-S. With AF-C in video it tended to hunt a lot on those cameras. Though, at least on the a7S I was able to put it into manual focus and then do singular AF so it's at least usable in video on the camera. 👍
