Hell I'm an old school 2 stroke guy for life and I've always been told to break it in like you ride it. I've had and rebuilt many badass 250Rs and banshees and master blasters and almost every 2 stroke dirt bike made and I always fire it up and let it idle a bit as soon as I get it back together and rev it a bit and listen for any noises in the motor and let it warm up a bit and kill it and let it cool and if everything seems good I'll take it out and putt around and get it all warmed up so it's not breaking up and if everything still sounds good I let her rip just like I would any other time and have never had any issues with the 2 strokes that way I would not do a 4 stroke break in like this though but with the 2 strokes I never have them bore the cylinders super tight tolerance wise to the piston because they will want to try and seize up a bit once they get really warm with this break in method once everything cools down it will free back up and just takes a little more care to break it in but with not so tight of tolerances you will be just fine breaking it in like you ride it.

Hey Brother zilla owners. I bought mine new in 1987 (early 88 model), still have it. First off thanks for doing these video's, you're a natural at that. Some advice from me. You will soon realize how heavy the zilla steering is. It's the 10 degree castor angle (pretty much a chopper). You mentioned a 250R, they have a 5 degree angle, it's like power steering. Adjustable a-arms....dial it back to 0 degrees, super easy steering (I did it to mine and can ride all day now). Also, a lightened flywheel really makes her hit hard..common mod done to stock flywheel. I had my porting done at Duncan Racing ( National Kit). Go to the web page, awesome zilla carb tuning info, and they have info about everything too, Technical pages section...incredibly easy to follow. Love your videos...no annoying music, just 2 stroke noise....thanks.
Has anyone said anything to you guys about the crank case pulling oxygen and blowing up? I had heard about somewhere but I can’t remember how the story goes.
Jetting is everything, i remember my first time trying to figure out jetting on a twin Shee when i put aftermarket pipes on it. It was dogging on the top but then it made a certain sound when we changed it and we knew before ever riding it that we nailed it.
I would have definitely pulled the spark plug and read it when doing jetting setup. It’s the best way to know if your rich or lean and will give you peace of mind on your setup.
If you ride and build a lot of two strokes, you can feel if it's too lean or rich without even needing to plug chop it. Boggy or delay too rich. Hanging idle or not revving out just falling flat up top too lean on the needle/main jet.
@@coloradodirtbike5930 I agree to an extent. But on a fresh build that you have never ridden or had experience with the plug is the best way I my opinion.
With the KFX? Yes. The Quadzilla is a lot quieter than the KFX, we didn't even ride it in this video except to get me to the basin; it literally hurts your ears in person.
Got the ole daisy thrasher running good.. Mike this is coming from a guy that’s 41 and has been throwing a leg over a quad since he was 4, I’ve rode, worked on and owned nearly every quad made and I’ll say I like the way you work on them and how you do the rebuilds. You’re meticulous like myself and like to do things in a step process like you do as well. . I find that less things get missed or done wrong this way. Even tho we ran a powersports shop for a few years like yourself Im not a certified powersports tech but I’ve been wrenching on them as long as I could turn a wrench. I appreciate that you and John are still enjoying stomping gears on atvs and haven’t started throwing a walking cane in a rubber-band driven SxS yet.lol.. Not to say there not fun and I wouldn’t be opposed to having one as a secondary, but they will never have the seat of the pants thrill like a atv or dirt bike.. If Y’all ever get down to Kentucky we’ve got a few good spots to rip around on.

I'm having similar issues and wondered if that's something I can try, just didn't wanna spend the money before knowing that's the problem, up in Canada those genuine carb are bloody $$$, thx man
A plug chop would stop all the guessing. How do you guys build all these 2 strokes and never plug chop? What are you using as a way to tell you how its jetted? Sound? Feel?
For a budget build you did fine with the ole Zilla. Most folks would have walked away with the case damage you had. I went through the same scenario on a 89 CR250R frame up job. Kudos Mike.
Oh yea never give up riding. May I make a suggestion instead of buying an OLD machine of questionable history at best get a new Yamaha Raptor 700R. Amazing modern sport quad. I own one. I owned the older ones too!

Will it be at the badlands next year?
It's possible; I'm pretty sure I'll be there
I’m surprised you didn’t put a honda thumb throttle on it.

Brappin behind the neighborhood lol
What the tire sizes the Kfx about to put new tires on my kfx not sure If should stay 21*7*10 and 20*10*9 or go up in size with least a 11 wide rear
The KFX has Obor MX tires on it right now; 20x6x10 front and 18x10x8 rear
Will this carb work on a 1987 250r quadracer
This is going to be in Oklahoma next weekend right?
Should do some plug check when jetting too!

where did you buy your jets at?
The blue organizer is linked in the description; the jets came from Rocky Mountain ATV MC - bit.ly/3AkRaSS
You want to see a tan color. Black is rich , white or grey is lean.
Nice ! Maybe you should put your Zilla up against Mr. Nasty s Banshee !!
Awesome
Its blowing smoke, its either cold or rich. Lean it out and fatten the jet
@michaelsabo where has John been all year??????
I would have definitely pulled the spark plug and read it when doing jetting setup. It’s the best way to know if your rich or lean and will give you peace of mind on your setup.
Prob needs more riding time to get some color on the plug. But yeah I use the plug for tuning on my four strokes. Two strokes by sound.
