Margaret Hamilton’s wicked witch portrayal was so iconic she influenced all Halloween witches. This is why this movie is a national treasure. Especially the memorable quotes.
She is the only witch on the planet. You're right about all witches and Halloween; they all resemble Margaret Hamilton. She's what comes to mind when you hear the word. It's incredible that she spent less than 13 minutes on screen, but left an impression that is world-wide and will never, ever go away. Even 100 years from now, it will be her image people will always and forever associate with the word _witch_ .
@Antkingjrx I thought you knew. There was a fan that did an AI poster where Erivo's eyes were shaded below her hat, like the original poster. She didn't like that. It's a whole thing that had videos explaining it way better than I think I could
Margaret Hamilton was the best person to play The Wicked Witch of the West. According to David Newell, her appearance on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood was the result of letters from children and adults and also a letter from Margaret Hamilton herself. She had written a letter to her local television station saying how much she enjoys watching MRN with her grandchildren. David Newell heard about that and told Mr. Rogers. He told him, “If you can find Margaret Hamilton, I’ll write the script.” After her appearance, she became a great friend to everyone from MRN.
What I like about her appearance was that it gave her a chance to show the kids she was nice in real life and how she got into her Wicked Witch character.
It was clever of Mr. Rogers to have Miss Hamilton on to explain her character to children. I grew up just a little earlier than that broadcast, so I wasn't a small child and had already seen the _Wizard of Oz_ and had never been afraid of her (although I was afraid for the other characters). She didn't even need 15 minutes of fame, only just over 12 minutes on screen to create what is in my opinion, the most iconic movie character in history. No matter your language, when you hear _Witch_ you think of Margaret Hamilton, even if you don't know her name.
Thank you for mentioning Adrian, one of the most iconic costume designers of his time, dressing everyone from Bette David to Norma Shearer. Loved this rundown of all these iconic witch looks. Great fun and can't wait to see the film.
Fun trivia: The finale was supposed to be the reveal of the Wizard behind the curtain with him sayin "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. Instead, pay attention this: our grand finale" -- but Turner (who owned the rights) told them they could use X number of minutes and that would exceed the allotment so it was cut. Hence the large space next to the vehicles
I love how Margaret Hamilton embraced her role as the Wicked Witch of the West to the fullest, despite what she went through making 'The Wizard of Oz' film! Props to her!
3:51, the bulldog looking thing is Toto. He's a normal dog for the first part of the film and Glinda transforms him into an anthropomorphized mascot character so that he can protect Dorothy.

It's crazy how the 1939 MGM Oz movie has literally become the "official" Oz cannon in pop culture and all things Oz related, even surpassing the original Oz books. Everything from Dorothy's blue gingham dress to the Tinman's funnel hat. The biggest of course being the ruby slippers, which in the original story are silver. Ruby slippers have become the icon of Oz. But here we are in 2024, and the new Wicked movie restores the original silver slippers.
Mombi is actually one of the villains in the second book of the Wizard of Oz series. She is the witch who colluded with the Wizard when he wanted to take over the Emerald City. To create a power vacuum that the Wizard could exploit, he takes the little princess Ozma when she is a baby, and gives her to Mombi to keep as a slave. She turns Ozma into a boy and gives her a new name, Tip, so that she will never find out what her true identity is. Ozma grows up suffering all kinds of abuse, never having anyone who loves her. One day Ozma discovers that Mombi is planning to get rid of her for good by turning her into a marble statue. She escapes with her new friends, Jack Pumpkinhead and a living sawhorse, and the three of them embark on an adventurous journey during which Ozma discovers the truth and regains her true appearance, feeling comfortable in her own skin for the first time since she can remember . In the end they even start fighting each other and basically defeat themselves to the bewilderment of Dorothy, Ozma and the others. Don't believe me? Read the book and be amazed too.

SIR ELTON JOHN'S FINAL TOUR WAS GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD PLUS AT MY JOB IN THE BACKROOM WE HAVE ONE LANE THAT WE LIKE 2 CALL THE YELLOW LANE/ROAD/THE LONG LANE :
The 1939 Wicked Witch wasn't ONLY painted green in order to take advantage of the technicolor film, although that WAS a partial reason. The main reason was because her iconic black dress was causing problems with the lighting on her originally naturally-colored face. The immense amount of solid black resulted in, what was described as, a thin white line around the edge of her face which caused a separation effect, almost making it look like her face was floating in mid-air. As such, painting her green solved this problem.
My favorite to non Oz, Margaret Hamilton Whitch appearance would be in that 1951 Abbott N Costello film, Coming Around The Mountain. "What can I do for you, fine Fellows?" "Uh, he needs a love potion."
Oz the Great and Powerful would’ve worked better without James Franco. And the fact it was supposed to be Robert Downey Jr is such a missed opportunity
Fun fact: it's implied that the colors of the roads indicate what direction they're going. Red for East, Yellow for West, Pink (i think) for north and blue for south. Its at the central Emerald City that the roads turn green. The Yellow Brick Road, is not the road to the emerald city, its the west bound road. This has led to the general conclusion that the Wicked Witch of the West's actual color is Yellow. Much like how Glinda is pink, Glenda is Blue, and the Wicked Witch of the East is implied to be red. I may be getting a little bit of this wrong since its been almost 20 years since i read the books. Its also implied that Tinman was a munchkin and thet the Wicked Witch of the East is the one who js responsible for his condition originally.
In the original story, the color coordination of the four counties was low key, if at all. But Emerald City was not really all green in the original story. When visitors (like Dorothy and her friends) entered, they were forced to wear green glasses that were locked on, with the claim the brilliance of the emeralds was too much for unprotected eyes. Even the lion had to wear them, although I think like most mammals, lions are colorblind. (In the subsequent sequels, the city was described as all green.) Legend has it that when the author, L. Frank Baum, was working as an editor of a small Midwestern city, he heard a tall tale about a farmer so poor, he couldn't afford grass for his horses, so he put green glasses on them and fed them straw.
I went to the land of oz last year! My dad had been to the park as a kid so I had always wanted to go. They open every fall for a couple weekends. It was fun! It's funny you mentioned Mila Kunis because when she was on that 70s show they did an oz themed episode and Donna wore a wicked witch costume that was exactly like the original illustrations in the books. The reason Theadora (the wicked witch's name in that oz) 's costume was like that was because she essentially caught fire after eating the apple her sister gave her and she chose to stay burnt, green and scorned. Also u failed to mention that James franco also has SA allegations against him. Pretty much why we never got anymore oz prequels, even mariah carey disowned the theme song she sung for that movie. It had potential but, oh well
Now, just to be fair; nobody's perfect, even our heroes. And even with all his faults, L. F. Baum is an icon here in Kansas, and was also remarkably progressive in other ways for his time, especially with women's rights and children's literature. Just something to think about. =)

I'm surprised you didn't touch on 1939's producer Mervyn LeRoy's concept for when Gale Sondergaard was attached as the witch, especially since it was inspired by the queen in Snow White! Sondergaard did a wardrobe test for the part as a slinky, glamorous witch in a black, sequin costume and glamor make-up. However, after pushback from others involved on the production and in the studio, and backlash after it was reported in the press, LeRoy relented and had her do a test in an "ugly witch" makeup and outfit. She later said, "In those days, I was not about to make myself ugly for any motion picture," and she left the project with LeRoy's blessing. ("[He] said to me, 'I don't want you to be an ugly witch.' So we dropped the whole thing, and of course Margaret Hamilton played the role, and it's a classic.")
@@TeacupForOne Exactly! LeRoy openly talked about trying to create a live-action cartoon with the film and, if I remember the tidbit from Road to Oz correctly, Walt Disney loaned his personal print of Snow White to LeRoy to screen for the creatives!

I actually liked Oz, the Great and Powerful! They introduced china town which was in the book. And that porcelain girl was animated beautifully. Plus, for those of us who could never afford to see the show in New York, it was as close as it could come to a Wicked Witch backstory.
Props to you for mentioning the Land of Oz theme park! I actually live a few miles from it, and one of my friends from church has been a performer at that park in the past! As for the costume...did they recolor a Taco Bell sauce packet costume (yes, that is a thing)?
We all love the original 1939 Wizard of Oz, but I would argue that it pretty much either almost killed many performers in this film, or that many poor decisions during the making of the film eventually lead to everybody’s deaths.
As yes the very grounded Sesame Street with only straight facts like math, reading, history, human sized talking yellow birds, obvious magic, various monsters and of course eventualy the very fact based fairies.

There was an animated series based on the 1930s Movie. They too made the Wicked Witch's costume purple. Otherwise, it took after the Margaret Hamilton appearance.
As someone living in St. Louis, who has season tickets to the Muny with his mom, I would very much give anything to see Disney Dan in a performance also fun fact Ken Page or Oogie boogie himself was a frequent player at the Muny
Obviously, Disney's been wanting to make this movie for years... That being said though, I agree; that A-100 animatronic was SO lifelike, I though it was an actor the first time I saw it in person! Too bad though that this witch didn't appear in my FAVORITE Disney-Oz-movie; 'Return to Oz' from 1985. (And yes, I love 'The Wiz' too.) =)
Great video! Cant wait to see the wicked movie Friday at a private screening for people at the performing arts center i perform at . Would love to see you do Galinda/Glinda next!
I understand why he left it out because the wicked witch isn’t in it, but the 1925 Wizard of Oz features an appearance of pre-Laurel and Hardy fame Oliver Hardy as the tinman

I am a huge Once fan and Zelena in the scene with Regina the evil queen, is wearing Regina's clothes. She has more wicked witchy clothes later throughout the series
I feel like we need a top 10 broadway and or musicals from Dan.
I actually liked Oz, the Great and Powerful! They introduced china town which was in the book. And that porcelain girl was animated beautifully. Plus, for those of us who could never afford to see the show in New York, it was as close as it could come to a Wicked Witch backstory.
It's called Once Upon a Time :p
16:27 if you think about it Wicked is basically just an AU fanfiction of the Wizard of Oz
Props to you for mentioning the Land of Oz theme park! I actually live a few miles from it, and one of my friends from church has been a performer at that park in the past!
As for the costume...did they recolor a Taco Bell sauce packet costume (yes, that is a thing)?
We all love the original 1939 Wizard of Oz, but I would argue that it pretty much either almost killed many performers in this film, or that many poor decisions during the making of the film eventually lead to everybody’s deaths.
i love seeing broadway mention in Disney Dan episodes
Margaret Was On Fire In the scene when she disappeared
i never thought i would hear that something made by marvel would have patti lupone playing glinda
As yes the very grounded Sesame Street with only straight facts like math, reading, history, human sized talking yellow birds, obvious magic, various monsters and of course eventualy the very fact based fairies.
I love what you do
Australians
Big W has all the merch. Like ALL the merch. So many T-shirts. And wizard of Oz at WB movie world just in time for the summer holidays??! Clever 😂
There was an animated series based on the 1930s Movie. They too made the Wicked Witch's costume purple. Otherwise, it took after the Margaret Hamilton appearance.
Is next week Glinda’s episode?
Margaret Hamilton was dynamite!!
Thanks for adding the sesame street lost media into the video!
As someone living in St. Louis, who has season tickets to the Muny with his mom, I would very much give anything to see Disney Dan in a performance also fun fact Ken Page or Oogie boogie himself was a frequent player at the Muny
I think the creature in Toto's shoes actually looks like Jeep from Popeye
yellow brick dan is my spirit animal
Obviously, Disney's been wanting to make this movie for years... That being said though, I agree; that A-100 animatronic was SO lifelike, I though it was an actor the first time I saw it in person! Too bad though that this witch didn't appear in my FAVORITE Disney-Oz-movie; 'Return to Oz' from 1985. (And yes, I love 'The Wiz' too.) =)
I’ve never liked The Wizard of Oz. I prefer Wicked. Also, I am so excited about the Wicked movie.
“ Watch Out The Witch is in the house”
Can we talk about how Miss Piggy is the absolutely perfect Wicked witch
Dorothy's slippers were also changed from silver to ruby because they wanted more color.
Dude DID DAN EVEN WATCH YESTERWORLD’S VIDEO ON THE WIZARD OF OZ
Hey Dan , pls do an evolution of Alice in Wonderland Costumes at Disney Parks ?
Great video! Cant wait to see the wicked movie Friday at a private screening for people at the performing arts center i perform at
.
Would love to see you do Galinda/Glinda next!
I understand why he left it out because the wicked witch isn’t in it, but the 1925 Wizard of Oz features an appearance of pre-Laurel and Hardy fame Oliver Hardy as the tinman
Yes finally The Wizard of Oz 😅
Omg i googled the song and my mouth was hanging open at the second line.
Oh it’s reallllllll bad
So we're DEFYING GRAVITY! :D (Have you guys seen the musical?) awesome outfit

Great video, but you forgot the witch from the mini-series witches of Oz.
I actually love the movie Disney’s Oz The Great and Powerful. Also, I love the tv show Once Upon A Time. All seven seasons are so good and amazing.
But on a lighter note; apparently, Greg Maguire never read a comic-book-origin story before! XD
if Elton John had a jukebox music the Yellow Brick Road would be a great character to have it
We all love the original Wizard of Oz, but I would argue that it pretty much either almost killed many performers in this film, or that many poor decisions during the making of this film eventually lead to everybody’s deaths.
