He realised after what Julius said about the perfect team that something great was cooking and this was more than him. If you can see things that clearly, being humble comes easy... And now, I, a west African from Ghana who has only been to Alexandria Virginia once, know about about the great coaches Yoast and Boone. I have no idea who the Hall of famers are in Alexandria. The man gave up his place in the hall of fame for immortality. Both are great men but I think Yoast is the bigger man... Boone had a point to prove... Yoast however despite being demoted contributed to greatness instead of leaving
Except Boone’s offense was doing worse than Yoast’s defense was in this moment. None of this made sense, except that the story dictated that this was the moment that Yoast, who was nothing but accommodating to literally everyone who had a second of screen time in this movie, had to humble himself when his defense held the opponent to seven points and Boone’s offense only mustered three points. This is just bad screenwriting. If you’re already making shit up, at least make this somewhat believable.
Bro that guy knew he wasn't good enough so he recommend someone who he knew could get the job done better than him. That's humility right there man... No one can teach you that.
This movie gets me every time...I am an older man now but back in high school when I was a senior in 1980, I played for the Mt. Pleasant Tigers in Texas. We were the smallest (size) team in our district. I played left guard and was 6' tall and weighed #160 ringing wet. LOL We came off of a 1 & 13 season the year before. They fired the head coach and got a new one named Mike Zoffuto. About the first thing he ever said to use right before 2 a days was HE was the only one there who had the brass balls...Then he whipped us in to shape. My senior year with a new coach, we went undefeated until Quarter Finals when we played McKinney Texas who were HUGE...As a matter of fact, they were so big they were moved to another district two or three levels up (I think). At half time we were loosing 24 to 3. Us country boys had never played on AstroTurf (Mesquite Texas) and we had several of our guys break their legs trying to cut.... We were mostly a second half team but we thought we were beat until Coack Zoffuto spoke to use as he always did at halftime...we went back out on that field , No, we did not win the game but when the AstroTurf settled the scoreboard read 24 to 23... Back then I was headed down the wrong path. Coach Mike changed my life on that field.. I owe him a lot...R.I.P. coach Mike Zoffuto
Yeah, but he had to do it because the coach wasnt man enough to say they needed Petey. They needed Petey, and instead humbling themselves, or himself, he allowed his player to fall in his sword and smasked it as some lesson
Bruh, when dude gave up his position on the field so the best man for the job could get it done right!!! I think thats my top 3 favorite scenes of the movie and its a small gesture with huge meaning
But its trash that the coach put it on him to give up instead of going to Petey himself. He made his player do what he didnt have the balls to do, and that was admit that he needed someone
@@rollme1kenobi914 Then they should have kept Alan in and took the loss or whatever came of it, right? What i mean is that, either Petey didnt deserve to play and they were willing to lose because of it, or he didnt deserve to play but despite that they needed him and needed reconsile the issue. If you oick the second, then it was the coach's job to go converse with Petey and put him in rather than make Alan do it. Alan had already did a big thing by going to the coach and admitting he was goog enough. Petey took what the coach said and stood on the side lines rooting for his team, not expecting to play until the next year. The coach wanted to win and knew Alan was right but he couldnt being himself to tell Petey they needed him. This can be compared with the final game in AnyGivenSunday. The coach decides to go with Cap for the game because of Willie's attitude and his loayalty to Cap. During halftime, Cap admits he's finished and cant play anymore. The D'mato doesnt make him give Willie his position, he goes, has the conversation where they are making amends without using so many words, and Willie knows hes about to go in. Thats how a real coach, a real leader handles his responsibilities... IMO
I find it amazing that American football is quite popular in Japan, probably the only country in the region with high level football program. Baseball too.
@@captainobvious90 I am an American living in Japan and I have played a little in the 3rd division of their pro league over here. I think what is amazing about Japan is that they play both rugby and American football to a very respectable level. They hosted the rugby world cup the last time and did very well and they have actually have won the IFAF World Championship of American Football twice before the U.S. started to field a team in the tournament.
I do like how Yoast throughout the movie was never shown to be racist but at the same time was hesitant to embrace integration but obviously he grows as the movie goes on. Then at this moment he openly acknowledges how he learned from the players and fully accepts the situation
I think you're spot on. His issue was resentment, and maybe he blamed integration as being responsible for what was happening to him. But he clearly never had the hate for black people that others in that town did. In fact Boone even confronts him at one point about being too "soft" on the black players.
I met one of the Titan's sons last year. I live near this school. He told me the biggest thing the Titans laugh about is who portrayed Petey because the real guy was SUPER dark. There was an article I read that said Gerry and Julius were good friends but the moxie slightly exaggerated their friendship. The guy I talked to said bullshit. The movie was accurate on that.
I am a 32 year old white guy, and I remember watching this movie with my whole class in 5th grade in 2000. I live in Kansas City and yet my school was wonderfully diverse. They didn't play Ed Henry team in the state championship they played them in game 4 of the year and won by a touchdown they jus made it the championship game in the movie because who wants to end on a blowout and Gerry played in the state tittle game he ain't get hurt till after the season
"alright now. we are going to change up our entire personnel on defense. hey you offensive guys, your'e now playing in the secondary where coverage and roles are complex and we need you to succeed. okay! lets go!"
I always hated him giving the spot to Petey. I get that he's better and all, but Petey was weak in character. He quit like 3 times in the movie, and it just feels like he's being rewarded for it here.
Firstly, I CLEARLY stated 'I get that he's better', but it doesn't change the fact that Petey was weak. Furthermore there are countless examples of teams benching someone for that type of reason. There were quite a few things they could have done to fix the situation, like having people play both sides, or changing around the D-backs. Putting Petey in the game wasn't the only way to win. The fact that they did I understand, but I don't personally agree with. Pete is weak. And that weakness is it's own lack of talent.
